For Your Information: Why Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” Law Is Working AGAINST Justice For Trayvon Martin’s Shooting Death

Sometimes the laws made to “protect us” end up doing more harm than good. Sanford police let George Zimmerman go home after he shot and killed Trayvon Martin last month, but Central Florida police agencies routinely make arrests for murder in “stand your ground” cases — and then let courts decide if a killing is justified. Passage of Florida’s landmark self-defense law in October 2005 caused initial confusion, but court records show police and prosecutors now file charges more often than not. Central Florida’s “stand your ground” claimants already in prison or awaiting trial range from an off-duty security guard to a retired Orlando police officer, bar patrons and a man who chopped off his cousin’s hand with a machete. So if police make these type of arrests regularly, why the hell isn’t George Zimmerman punk azz walking the streets??? Those and many other cases headed for trial share a common factor: witnesses willing to testify. In January 2011, 15 to 20 people were nearby when Chad Bekari Smith claimed two men shot at him outside an Orlando gas station. A security guard and father of three, Smith drew his licensed pistol, wounded both men, called 911 on his cellphone and waited for police to arrive, according to his arrest report. “I was going to lose my life, so I reacted and defended my life,” Smith, then 23, told his lawyer, according to court records. But police did not believe him. Nor did a jury that convicted Smith last fall of two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. His conviction and 20-year prison sentence are under appeal. Unlike that case, there were no known eyewitnesses when Trayvon died Feb. 26 in a confrontation with Zimmerman inside the gated Retreat at Twin Lakes neighborhood. The teen was walking back from a 7-Eleven when he was followed by Zimmerman, 28, a Neighborhood Watch volunteer who fired a single shot and later told police Trayvon attacked him, records show. That’s hardest type of case for prosecutors. When the alleged aggressor is dead and there are no witnesses, “it is harder to disprove or to prove beyond a reasonable doubt” that the shooter claiming self-defense faced a credible threat, according to Randy Means, chief investigator and spokesman for the Orange-Osceola State Attorney’s Office. “Since very little case law exists, all we have to go on is our interpretation of the statute. It’s too new for us to use case law effectively,” Means said. “It is frustrating for the charging prosecutors.” Ultimately, the decision to charge Zimmerman with murder lies in the hands of State Attorney Norm Wolfinger who was one of several prosecutors who lobbied AGAINST “stand your ground” in 2006. Hopefully his stance on the law will help set the type of precedent needed to put George Zimmerman in jail for a LONG time! Source More On Bossip! Katy Perry’s ‘Part of Me’ Video: Five Things We Want To See

Perry is set to premiere the clip on ‘MTV First’ tonight at 7:23 p.m. ET, followed by an MTV.com Q&A. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry in her “Part of Me” music video Photo: Capitol We’re just excited as you are about the premiere of Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” video tonight at 7:23 p.m. ET on MTV. But before Katy herself introduces the video and answers your questions on MTV.com following the debut, we have a wish list of five things we’d love to see in the visuals. Directed by Ben Mor and filmed at the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base in Oceanside, California, in February, the clip promises to show Perry in full combat mode. So what do we want from the sure-to-be-feisty video? Katy Perry Getting Tough She’s always been pretty fierce, but seeing her crawl around in the dirt and maybe even shoot a gun? Well, that’s a side of the singer we have yet to see. But given how aggressive she is in the video teaser, we know she can live up to the challenge. Katy Perry in Night Vision Who hasn’t imagined what the California Gurl would look like in the green light of night vision? Based on the tease, it seems Katy Cats can see Perry in a whole new, um, light. Katy Perry In Uniform Of all the looks we’ve seen from Ms. Perry (which have even included a bra that shoots whipped cream ), getting a glimpse of Perry in a uniform would be a whole new style. And given that she usually looks impeccably feminine and super glossy, it could be fun to see this new, more lo-fi side of the star. Katy Perry With Black Hair Sure, we love Katy’s blue hair , but have we missed Katy in her signature jet-black hair? Yes! It’s her look, and we can’t imagine a video for a song as dark as this would include candy-colored locks. Katy Perry Kissing Off a Former Lover Given the fact that the song is all about saying “buh-bye” to a dude who doesn’t deserve you, we hope that story line pops up in the video somehow. How that ties into the Marine theme of the video? Well, that will remain a mystery until the premiere, but we can’t help thinking about the old adage about not messing with a woman scorned … Following the premiere, the singer will talk all about her new projects, including Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, during a 30-minute interview with MTV News’ James Montgomery on MTV.com. Don’t miss “MTV First: Katy Perry” tonight, when the pop star will debut her long-awaited video for “Part of Me” at 7:23 p.m. ET on MTV. Then head over to MTV.com for an exclusive 30-minute interview with Katy herself! Related Videos Get Ready For ‘MTV First: Katy Perry’

‘Dancing With The Stars’: Urkel And Opera Singer Impress

Jaleel White and Katherine Jenkins tie for first place, with telenovela star William Levy not far behind. By Kelley L. Carter Kym Johnson and Jaleel White on “Dancing with the Stars” Photo: ABC A reformed nerd. A music legend. A TV host. A Super Bowl champion. All in one room together. That could only mean one thing: ABC’s hit competition series “Dancing With the Stars” is back. The reality show that puts a cornucopia of past and present celebrities on a ballroom dance floor to test their dance moves is back for another season, and during Monday night’s (March 19) premiere, we got to see famous tailfeathers a-shaking. The celebrities will come back and dance one more time next week before the cutting begins. Overall, the judges thought this was the best opener of any of their seasons. Here’s how the season 14 celebs fared: Maria Menounos and Derek Hough In their first rehearsal, the TV journalist set the stage for how we might see her grow this season, telling her partner, three-time champ Hough: “I’m like a dude, but I have boobs. I’m not dainty-like. I want to wrestle. Let’s fight!” They danced the cha-cha their first time out, and the judges thought her timing was good but that she needed to work on overall execution. “Nothing can prepare you for the first dance. But until you come onto this floor for the first time, you’re never sure how you’ll cope. Overall, I thought you coped very, very well. Great start to the show. Well done,” said head judge Len Goodman. 21/30 Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya He might be a soap-0opera bad boy, but on the dance floor, he was more animated than brooding. The judges thought he could dance and that his foxtrot had a lightness about it. What he needs to work on? His footwork. “Beautifully acted, beautifully danced. I loved the way you extend your moves. Week one! What are you going to do week two?” said Bruno Tonioli. 23/30 Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd Football players — and athletes in general — typically have a good run during this competition. Driver’s athleticism (and gridiron moves) look to serve him well. The judges thought his cha-cha was a crowd-pleaser. “You are nothing but charisma and charm for days! You kicked that cha-cha’s booty!” said Carrie Ann Inaba. 21/30 Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff The pop singer said he agreed to do the show because he wanted to get out from behind the piano during his shows. He’s certainly paired up with the right partner; Smirnoff is the defending champ from last season. The judges thought his foxtrot wasn’t the best first showing, even though they found it to have a gentle quality to it. “You coped well with a difficult dance. I liked the routine. I thought it flowed. The foxtrot is a romantic sort of dance, and you were a little bit stiff,” Goodman said. 20/30 Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower There’s always a Disney star in the mix, and the young guns tend to go far. For their first dance, they did the cha-cha, something Fegan’s professional partner thought might pair well with his natural style, considering he’s a freestyle hip-hop dancer. The judges thought Fegan and Hightower had the coolest spin they’ve seen in all 14 seasons. “You, Roshon, can go on and on and on, I’m telling you! Laser-sharp. Never too early. You split it in the middle. It was unbelievable!” Tonioli said. 23/30 Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy For their first dance, they did the fox trot, and the “View” co-host was concerned because she said she doesn’t do elegance very well. Should she last, it’ll be something she’ll spend much of the season working on, she said. The judges said she brought the joy of dance into her routine. They also said she moved very well. “You are the happiest contestant we’ve had ever in all of the 14 seasons of ‘Dancing With the Stars’! You had so much joy. Nice job,” Inaba said. 23/30 Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy She’s on the prairie no more! This former child actress — we loved her as Laura on “Little House on the Prairie” — danced the cha-cha for her first dance, and the judges thought she coped very well with a difficult dance and found her performance inspiring. “I would like to have seen a little more shape in your free arm and a little more hip action. But I thought it was a very ambitious routine,” Goodman said. 20/30 William Levy and Cheryl Burke They call this telenovela star the Mexican Brad Pitt, but after being in front of a North American audience, the easy-money guess is that Levy, who’s actually Cuban, will be able to stand on his own name. The judges thought his first dance, the cha-cha, was incredible. They thought he captured the spirit of the dance and praised his hotness. “The hottest package of the season! The nation is wild about Levy!” Tonioli screamed. 24/30 Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovoloni The tennis legend is a breast cancer survivor and she’s paired up with Dovoloni, one of the show’s favorite professional dancers. Their first dance was the fox trot, and the judges said the most decorated tennis player was beautiful, elegant and refined on the court. “I love strong women, but it’s so beautiful to see this transformation. I want you to work on your turns for future weeks,” Inaba said. 20/30 Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas The Welsh opera singer hopes that just because she’s a new face to North America, that won’t count her out. She sang on “DWTS” last year, and now she’s back to test her dancing skills. Her first dance was the foxtrot, and the judges said her performance was exquisite and the style was impeccable. They also said she set the bar very high. “I thought you had wonderful musicality. I liked the detail that went on throughout the dance,” Goodman said. 26/30 Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus The Grammy winner joked that the Pips never let her dance. She’s hoping to make like a Pip this season and get her groove on. For her first dance, she took on the cha-cha, and the judges (not to mention the crowd) thought she was outstanding. The judges said there was a naturalness about her dances and that she oozed rhythm. “The legend has got the moves! You’ve got class, you’ve got sass and you are a star. A real one! Absolutely!” Tonioli said. 23/30 Jaleel White and Kym Johnson White will always be our favorite, awkward nerd — he played Steve Urkel on the hit show “Family Matters” — but he’s hoping to discover how coordinated he is in real life. His first dance was the foxtrot, and the judges didn’t think he was a goofball at all. Tonioli said he thought he was watching Gregory Hines dance. “Jaleel, you are the icing on the cake. Smooth, smooth, super smooth,” Inaba said. 26/30 Who was your favorite celeb on the first episode of “Dancing With the Stars”? Let us know in the comments!

‘The Voice’ Recap: Erin Martin Wins One Strange Battle

Six more contestants are sent home as battle rounds continue and the live shows draw nearer. By John Mitchell Erin Martin on “The Voice” Photo: NBC The theme on Monday night’s (March 19) episode of “The Voice” seemed to be strange pairings and even more oddly matched songs. Nearly every team to enter the ring was working one, the other or both for the third battle round, which saw judges Christina Aguilera , Blake Shelton , Adam Levine and Cee Lo Green send six contestants home and add even more members to their respective teams to take to the upcoming shows. Let’s get right to it! Team Adam The first pairing of the night was Team Adam’s Pip and Nathan Parrett. Pip’s popularity during the blind auditions (he got all four judges to turn their chairs) intimidated Nathan from the start and the pair was given a tall order when Adam assigned them Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good.” It’s no wonder, then, that mentor Robin Thicke’s major recommendation to Perrett was to up his confidence and get ready to sell it once he hit the stage. But while Thicke was busy giving Perrett a pep talk, Alanis Morrisette was advising Pip to take it down a notch and not over-sing the song Two clean-cut pop singers tackling Winehouse’s bluesy hit might seem strange, but it gave both an opportunity to show their range as vocalists and earned raves from all the judges. Ultimately, though, Pip’s stage presence and consistency won him a place on Team Adam for the finals. One of the night’s few pairings that made sense came later in the night, during Levine’s team’s second meeting in the ring, which saw raspy Angel Taylor go up against “sultry vocalist” (host Carson Daly’s words, not mine) Katrina Parker, singing “Bleeding Love” by Leona Lewis. Thicke had a lot of faith in Taylor, saying she had what it takes to win the whole thing if she remembered to bring emotion to her performance, but the judges didn’t feel the same. Parker brought it to the battle and won the support of Xtina, Blake, Cee Lo and ultimately Levine, who sided with the three judges and will take Parker with him to the live shows. Team Cee Lo Cee Lo created what had to be the night’s most awkward pairing: whispery Erin Martin and rock duo the Shields Brothers. Stylistically, the two couldn’t be more different — Martin kind of sounds like Macy Gray, while the Shields Brother tear into songs like your friendly neighborhood garage band. The strangeness extended to the mentor stage too, when the Bros were joined for rehearsal by Babyface, who called their first run-through “a challenge.” “I thought ‘Wayne’s World,’ ” he added. He asked them to express a softer side, and when they did, he seemed pleased that he could finally “hear your voices.” On her way into the ring, Martin was “100 percent confident” she would win and that “power [i.e. the Shields Brothers] isn’t talent, it’s just loud.” (Dis!) This battle was strange right down to the song: “What’s Love Got to Do With It” by Tina Turner. Christina raved about the performance, but the other judges weren’t so sure. The only thing Blake could really think to say was, “Erin, I am so glad you wore that.” Cee Lo called it “wonderfully strange” and chose Martin to move forward because he felt he would be better able to mold her unique voice while the Shield Brothers were too set in their garage-rock shtick. Team Christina Ashley De La Rosa became nervous the second Christina told her was going up against one of the show’s early front-runners, Jonathas, a father of two who lived in poverty as a child in Brazil. When they were given “No Air” by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown, she started freaking out. During the blind auditions, Jonathas’ vocal similarity to Usher caused quite a stir, so Ashley worried that being given a song so firmly in his wheelhouse (there was no denying from the beginning that he’d sing the heck out of Chris Brown’s part in “No Air”) would play to his advantage. But in the end, his comfort with the style and choice not to step outside it and show the judges he could do something else worked against him. While he was a natural singing Brown’s smooth R&B, the song gave Ashley a chance to show off her range. She did a great job with Sparks’ part, and her effort was rewarded with a continued spot on Team Xtina. Team Blake The strange pairings continued as Team Blake’s Jermaine Paul, a former backup singer for Alicia Keys, and pop-singing Texas teenager AlyX hit the ring together to sing the mega-’80s classic “Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car” by Billy Ocean. The song required a carefree attitude that mentor Miranda Lambert just wasn’t confident young AlyX had. “I’m not sure she’s ever had fun and cut loose,” Lambert said, prescribing “sassiness” if she wanted to pose much of a challenge against Jermaine. It was a futile effort. Paul owned the song and the judges let him know it. “I mean, come on, Jermaine, you made that song your own,” Xtina fawned. Adam and Cee Lo agreed. And while Blake offered AlyX an “A” for effort, he unsurprisingly went with Paul, sending AlyX packing. The night’s most dramatic performance was its last, between Team Blake’s Gwen Sebastian and Erin Willet. In addition to their respective backstories (more on that later), the pair are total opposites when it comes to their singing styles. “Gwen is a country singer; Erin couldn’t be anything farther from that,” Blake explained as his rationale for teaming the two. And like every other country singer in the competition, Sebastian was enamored with her mentor Lambert, saying of the country star, “Her voice evokes every emotion I want to as a singer.” Things took a turn just before the battle, however, when Erin revealed that her father, who is suffering from stage 4 pancreatic cancer, is not doing that well. In fact, he’d only been given days to live, but he wanted her to stay in the competition, “I’m trying to be as present as I can be,” Willett told Shelton, who praised her devotion to both her father’s wishes and the competition. “I’m going to push from a place of wanting my father to be proud of me,” Willett said before she went on. Each judge commented on how radically different the two singers’ vocal styles were when they hit the stage, and it divided them. Christina and Adam went with Erin while Cee Lo picked Gwen. In the end, Blake sided with Xtina and Adam and picked Willett, who dedicated her win to her father. Moving On

‘Voice’ Judges ‘Love House Parties,’ Blake Shelton Says

‘We’ll get together almost every night, all the coaches, believe it or not,’ country singer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Blake Shelton Photo: MTV News While there seems to be a friendly rivalry between the four judges on “The Voice,” off camera, that rivalry is nonexistent. The sole country star among the foursome, Blake Shelton, revealed to MTV News just what those crazy kids do when the cameras stop rolling and they are left to their own devices. “We hang out a little bit,” he told us. “It’s different out there in Los Angeles, and I don’t really fit in on the scene, but there’s been a time or two [we’ll hang out], normally during the live episodes, especially last year. We’ll get together almost every night, all the coaches, believe it or not.” Shelton remembered one get-together where the only lady judge showed up to party with bells on. “I had a party last year at my house,” he recalled. “And I’ll be damned if the first person at my door wasn’t Christina Aguilera. We love our house parties on ‘The Voice.’ ” The singer’s love for all his judge pals extends beyond a good party; he wants them on his team too! One judge in particular would be Shelton’s first pick for Team Blake : “Cee Lo, because he can do anything. He can do rock. I’ve never heard him rap, but I’m sure he can rap. I know he does whatever it is he does [musically, and] he’s really good at it. That’s who I want: Cee Lo.” But what if he could cast his dream bromance? Well, that honor goes to someone else. “All I have to say is, it’s true: I have a man crush on Adam,” Shelton admitted . “It blows me away people can pick up on that just by watching that on television. I want to kiss him. I want to kiss him so bad. I don’t care if it’s mutual or not. Can you honestly tell me that you don’t have a little bit of a crush on Adam? He’s sexy, is the word I’m using.” Would you like to attend a “Voice” judge party? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Blake Shelton

Big K.R.I.T. Put His Real Life On 4Eva N a Day

Latest mixtape is ‘a day in the life of’ Big K.R.I.T., from ‘8:04 AM’ to ‘5:04 AM.’ By Rob Markman Big K.R.I.T. Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliner : Big K.R.I.T. Representing : Meridian, Mississippi Mixtape : 4Eva N a Day Real Spit : Ever wonder what goes on during the course of your favorite rapper’s day? On his latest mixtape, 4Eva N a Day, Big K.R.I.T. gives fans an intimate look into his life. From the moment he wakes up on the first track, appropriately titled “8:04 AM” to the tape’s second to last track “5:04 AM,” K.R.I.T. spreads his soul over the course of 17 selections. “I just wanted to do a sequel to Return of 4Eva, instead of it being just a group of songs, I said, ‘Man, let me do something conceptual,’ ” K.R.I.T. tells Mixtape Daily of the motivation behind his 2012 tape. Last March the Meridian, Mississippi MC/producer dropped his critically acclaimed Return of 4Eva. Though his releases are considered mixtapes, K.R.I.T. presents his works like albums. There are no freestyles, only well-thought-out songs of the rapper’s own original production. On his last tape, songs like “Highs & Lows,” “Dreamin’ ” and “The Vent” found K.R.I.T. bypassing the standard rap fare of money, cars and clothes, choosing to give more substance in his music. 4Eva N a Day takes the formula futher. ” 4Eva N a Day was pretty much a day in the life of as far as me,” he said. “So I tried to put my whole life on wax, from the moment I wake up, real life conversations with my father, my actual grandmother, there’s audio of her talking before a song. There’s people in my life that are actually on this tape.” “Boobie Miles” is an inspirational hymn inspired by the Texas high school running back whose real-life story inspired the 1990 critically acclaimed book “Friday Night Lights” and the movie of the same name. On the track, Krizzle urges listeners to put God first, a spiritual theme that carries the tape throughout. The title track finds the self-proclaimed King Remembered in Time celebrating his relative victories in the face of haters. On “Handwriting,” the Def Jam signee vents about label woes, and on “Insomnia,” he seeks some sexual healing to help ease the stresses of his day. If you let K.R.I.T. tell it, the life of an up-and-coming rap star isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, but you also get the feeling that the rookie wouldn’t have it any other way. 50 Cent and Eminem Join Forces At SXSW

50 Cent performs his 2003 album “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” with some help from Marshall Mathers. By Nadeska Alexis 50 Cent and Eminem perform March 16 Photo: Sam Hendrick/ MTV News 50 Cent made a rare appearance in Austin, Texas on Friday night to perform his classic 2003 album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ in its entirety, and fans who were hoping for that rumored Eminem performance were not the least bit disappointed. The opening lineup at the SXSW Shady 2.0 Showcase included 50 Cent’s new G-Unit artists Paris and Kidd Kidd, plus Action Bronson, Black Hippy’s Schoolboy Q, Don Trip and Big K.R.I.T. Yelawolf was forced to cancel his appearance due to an injury but his fellow Shady Records signees, Slaughterhouse, took the stage before Fif dishing out freestyles, in addition to singles like “Hammer Dance” from their upcoming album welcome to: Our House . 50 Cent hit the stage shortly after 11pm, launching into “What Up Gangsta?” decked out in an appropriately nostalgic outfit–a camouflage bullet-proof best and Yankees cap. Throughout the week there had been whispers of an Eminem guest appearance during Fif’s set, and Marshall Mathers confirmed those rumors on the second song of the night. Fifty rolled right into “Patiently Waiting,” spitting his first verse and within seconds Em burst onto the stage, delivering the hook and his verse, casually decked out in jeans a baseball cap and his signature hoodie. At times, Fif’s commentary during the show was just as entertaining as the actual songs. “It’s been 10 years. That album sold 13 million copies,” he told the crowd, marveling at the success of Get Rich or Die Tryin.’ “The money came so fast, I couldn’t f— it up,” he added, getting some laughs from the crowd. “I was trying everything I could think of.” Tony Yayo hung by Fif’s side as the crowd continued to go wild for tracks like “Many Men,” and “In Da Club.” And although the Queens rapper was in great spirits, he still managed to get in a bit of a rant, taking aim at some of his critics. “I guess it’s not what have I done, but what have I done for you lately, is that right?” he said, the annoyance evident on his face. Still, Fif treated fans to a few more songs, including an encore performance and a freestyle over Eminem’s “Till I Collapse,” which commanded another Shady appearance on stage. “Wanksta” was the closing number of the night, and though fans stayed put, expectantly, for another few minutes, that was it folks.
