Jonah Hill Can’t Match Lindsay Lohan’s ‘SNL’ Ratings

Last week’s Lohan-hosted episode scored bigger ratings but fewer laughs. By Gil Kaufman Tom Hanks and Jonah Hill on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC The sketches were mostly funnier, Tom Hanks swung by to show off one of his two Oscar trophies and Stefon was in the house to giggle his way through another classic list of nightlife tips (seriously, google “hoombas”). Plus there was a sure-to-be-classic-but-so-wrong sketch about a scientist touting his breakthrough teaching an ape to talk that did not go the way anyone intended. In short, Jonah Hill had a pretty good night hosting “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, but according to the Hollywood Reporter , he couldn’t quite reach the ratings heights set last weekend by Lindsay Lohan.
The magazine reported that the Hill episode, which featured two songs by the Shins, drew a 4.3 rating and a 2.6 rating in the 18-49 demo, which was down 21 percent from Lohan’s turn last week. Of course, Lohan’s much-hyped return to the “SNL” stage was eagerly anticipated, but mostly for the curiosity factor of whether the fallen actress could pull it off. Critics savaged her stiff acting and obvious cue-card reading. But Hill was looser on his episode, poking fun at himself in a funny cold open about his wild awards-show run and Oscar nomination for “Moneyball” in which he claimed he was still a regular guy, only to treat his pals at “SNL” with contempt and actor-y imperiousness. The “21 Jump Street” star reprised his obnoxious six-year-old character Adam Grossman, who savaged his dad’s J-Date girlfriend during a tense Benihana dinner and took an endless barrage of tennis balls to the crotch in a painful digital short. A Liza Minnelli sketch fell flat, but people are probably going to still be scratching their heads all week about the Brutus sketch in which Hill was exposed as a scientist who taught an ape how to talk, only to be outed as a pervert by said ape. The highlight, though, was what seemed like a throwaway sketch at the end when Hill’s character hires a string quartet to serenade his wife on their anniversary, but then grabs the mic and starts inexplicably rapping to Coolio’s dead homie homage “C U When U Get There.” Co-star Kristen Wiig’s character was pissed at first, but when she finally got on board the big smile on Wiig’s face and the rest of the cast’s obvious delight saved what could have been a lame, throwaway bit. The Shins performed two new songs, including the single “Simple Song” and “It’s Only Life.”

Lindsay Lohan Is A Redhead Again!

So it looks like Lindsay Lohan is trying to get her career back on track with a comeback of sorts – I’m not sure hosting Saturday Night Live and banging a weird old photographer can really be considered a comeback – and what better way to get back to your old self than by changing your hair color. Girls are weird. Anyway, I guess she was at her most popular back when she was a freckled face ginger and wants to get back to that Lindsay Lohan . Personally I want the drunken fire crotch Lindsay back, but I guess I don’t get any say in this decision.

By Kara Warner Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage After the mostly positive reviews of Lady Gaga ‘s first music-video directorial effort on “Marry the Night” . One Direction: A Guide To The Biggest Boy Band Around

After thousands turned out to see the British group perform on ‘Today,’ we look at who they are and how they got so big so fast. By John Mitchell One Direction Photo: Courtesy of Columbia Records On Monday morning (March 12), One Direction made their American television debut on “Today,” performing their hits “What Makes You Beautiful,” “One Thing” and “More Than This” in front of what was, according to Matt Lauer, one of the biggest crowds ever to pack the plaza — right up there with the numbers attracted by top pop acts like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. If the throngs of screaming teenage girls left you scratching your head, wondering what all the fuss was about, it’s not your fault. These guys seem to have come out of nowhere and already have people asking, “Are One Direction the next Beatles?” Why is everyone suddenly talking about One Direction? Let’s take a look. What is One Direction? We’re glad you asked. One Direction is a five-member boy band. They are already very popular in their native U.K. (hence the Beatles comparison), where their debut album, Up All Night, has already gone double-platinum . Night is being released in the U.S. on Tuesday. Though the lead single from Night, “What Makes You Beautiful,” has only recently been added to U.S. radio, it is already a hit, with sales of 255,000 in just three weeks, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The song debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #28 in late February, giving the boys the highest debut chart position of any U.K. act since the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” opened at #11 in January 1997. “Beautiful,” a carefree pop ditty with an infectious chorus, bested Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” to take home the fan-voted Best British Single prize at the BRIT Awards last month. The fan frenzy around One Direction is reminiscent of the early days of Bieber Fever. When the band made its first public appearance in the U.S. at Boston’s Natick Mall on March 4, more than 5,000 screaming fans descended on the shopping center. It was a relatively peaceful scene, though, especially when compared to the riot that broke out in 2009 when the 3,000 fans who had gathered at Long Island’s Roosevelt Field Mall to see Bieber began pushing and shoving as they got word that police were canceling the event because the crowd had become too rowdy. A likely reason the band already has such a large and fervent fanbase here in the U.S. despite being new to the scene is their accessibility on YouTube, where the video for “What Makes You Beautiful” has nearly 69 million views. YouTube is also largely credited with launching Bieber. Who is in the band? The five English and Irish gents in One Direction are Niall Horan, 18, Zayn Malik, 19, Liam Payne, 18, Harry Styles, 18, and Louis Tomlinson, 20. In typical boy-band fashion, each guy has his own shtick. This morning on “Today,” we learned that Horan is the “cute little Irish one,” Malik is the “quiet and mysterious” one, Payne is “the sensible one,” Styles is “the charming one” and Tomlinson is “the funny one.” Each group member appeared on the 2010 season of the U.K. version of “The X Factor,” where they tried and failed to make the cut in the individual boys category. At the suggestion of the show’s producers, they joined forces and re-entered as a group . Together as One Direction, they ultimately finished third in the competition and were signed to “X Factor” creator Simon Cowell’s Syco Records. What’s next? The sky’s the limit. One Direction recently wrapped up a small joint tour with another boy band, Big Time Rush , and its success inspired Entertainment Weekly to run a story with a headline asking, “Are Boy Bands Officially Back?” Considering the success of the Wanted , who just wrapped their tour of the U.S. and U.K. at Dublin’s massive O2 Arena on Friday and will release their U.S. debut April 24, it’s a question many are now asking. It’s been a long time since the Backstreet Boys, ‘NSYNC and 98 Degrees ruled pop radio, and the out-of-nowhere success of the Wanted and One Direction have a lot of people wondering whether, after several years of hip-hop stars and pop divas ruling the charts, we’re in for a boy-band revival. One Direction are already booked to perform at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on March 31 as well as on “Saturday Night Live” on April 7. The band’s December-January Up All Night tour of the U.K. sold out in minutes, prompting the band to add an Oceania leg with five dates planned across Australia and New Zealand in April. The next logical step would be a tour of the U.S., though no plans have been announced. What do you think of One Direction? Is it all just hype or will the boys be around for a while? ‘John Carter’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics are not finding much to praise in film based on Edgar Rice Burroughs hero. By Kevin P. Sullivan Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Disney Disney’s $250 million effort to bring the iconic Edgar Rice Burroughs hero, to the screen is certainly not making critics leap for joy supernaturally high because of differences in gravity. In fact, many have outright damned the film, while others have found a deep and fun love of B-movie and pulp traditions We’ve rounded up a sampling of reviews of “John Carter,” so you’ll know whether to head out to the theater this weekend. The Story “Our hero is John Carter, the Confederate Civil War veteran who strikes gold in the Arizona territory but who is whisked to the planet Barsoom on the flimsiest of pretexts. Barsoom is Mars by another name, and the Virginia-born Carter lands in the middle of another civil war, this one between the Heliumites and the Zondangans. Dejah Thoris, the Heliumite princess known also as ‘the red girl,’ is about to be married off against her will. But love finds a way, and while Taylor Kitsch’s hunky John Carter and Lynn Collins’ dishy princess smolder as effectively as possible under the circumstances, Kitsch in particular seems lost in ways unrelated to his character’s predicament.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune Taylor Kitsch “If the movie had a leading actor with the galactic charisma necessary for the task, we might even be talking classic sci-fi. Since it’s impossible to put Harrison Ford into the Wayback Machine, though, we’re stuck with the unfortunately named Taylor Kitsch (TV’s ‘Friday Night Lights’) as John Carter, the burned-out Civil War veteran who finds himself mysteriously transported to the Red Planet while searching for gold in the caves of Arizona. Kitsch is decent company — manly, muscled, noble, sardonic — but there’s nothing unique about him, and we follow him by default.” — Ty Burr, Boston Globe The Backstory “It starts with a great story — of love and politics, time travel and mystical pathways between planets — badly sucked dry. Based on ‘A Princess of Mars,’ the post-Civil War/pre-Tarzan brainchild of arguably one of the most entertaining non-Disney imagineers of all times, Edgar Rice Burroughs, the book and the Barsoom (a.k.a. Mars) series that would follow has been picked over for plot points by Hollywood for years.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Pixar Connection “The Pixar touch is evident in the precision of the visual detail and in the wit and energy of Michael Giacchino’s score, but the quality control that has been exercised over this project also has a curiously undermining effect. The movie eagerly sells itself as semitrashy, almost-campy fun, but it is so lavish and fussy that you can’t help thinking that it wants to be taken seriously, and therefore you laugh at, rather than with, its mock sublimity.” — A.O. Scott, New York Times The Final Word “The film was directed by Andrew Stanton, whose credits include ‘A Bug’s Life’ (1998), ‘Finding Nemo’ (2003) and ‘WALL-E’ (2008). All three have tight, well-structured plots, and that’s what ‘John Carter’ could use more of. The action sequences are generally well-executed, but they’re too much of a muchness. Does ‘John Carter’ get the job done for the weekend action audience? Yes, I suppose it does.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times Check out everything we’ve got on “John Carter.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Does Britney Spears Have ‘The X Factor’?

MTV News takes a look at the pros and cons of bringing Spears onboard as a judge for the reality singing competition. By John Mitchell Britney Spears Photo: MTV News The news that Britney Spears is reportedly in final negotiations to join “The X Factor” has set the MTV Newsroom on fire. Opinion on whether the pop star is a good fit for the reality singing competition has been sharply divided, so we decided to take on the topic the way we’re sure Simon Cowell did before making Spears a reported $10 million offer: a good, old-fashioned pros and cons list. Pro: She’ll attract viewers The debut season of “The X Factor” performed well below expectations. Its heavily hyped premiere pulled in 12.1 million total viewers and a meager 4.4/12 rating in the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49 demographic. That’s about half of what the 2011 season of “American Idol” averaged (“Idol” is having its own ratings woes this season), and it didn’t even win the night: Emmy-winning sitcom “Modern Family” drew 14.3 million viewers and a 6.0/15 for its season premiere. The poor ratings precipitated the overhaul that saw judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger and host Steve Jones fired from the show. There’s no question that Spears would bring viewers to “The X Factor.” She enjoys a large and devout fanbase who will basically follow her just about anywhere. And beyond her own fans, Spears’ celebrity would also likely draw attention from the general public, who will tune in simply to see how she does. Con: She’s become nervous on camera Though she can still wow a crowd live in concert, as evidenced by last year’s successful tour behind her hit album Femme Fatale, Spears has become increasingly tentative during interviews. She rarely grants on-camera sit-downs, and when she does, she seems nervous and uncomfortable. To be a strong judge or mentor on a reality show, you have to be very comfortable on camera. Part of what made Jennifer Lopez click last season on “Idol” was the she came across as confident, direct and often empathetic. She even broke down in tears after sending home contestant Chris Medina , whose fianc
