Wiz Khalifa Reveals O.N.I.F.C. Meaning

Title of sophomore album stands for ‘Only N—-a in First Class,’ Wiz explains on ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Wiz Khalifa is riding high off of his success, but it isn’t all good. On his sophomore album, O.N.I.F.C., Wiz will celebrate his victories, but he promises to give fans the other side, too. “It’s the Only N-Word in First Class,” Wiz said, breaking down the much-speculated acronym when he appeared on “Sway in the Morning” on Shade 45 on Friday (February 3). “It’s inspired by Prodigy’s H.N.I.C. When he dropped that, I felt like that sounded so strong.” When broken down, the title of Prodigy’s 2000 debut stands for “Head N—a in Charge,” so for his Only N—a in First Class, Wiz took cues from the Mobb Deep MC. There is a clean version of the album, too: One Night in First Class. Still, for Wiz the explicit title has so much more meaning. “I was just talking about me being a young rich dude and being black,” Wiz told Shade 45 hosts Sway and Devi Dev about his experience in airports. “It looks crazy to them when I walk up to them and show them my ticket or I’m going in priority seating, They’re like ‘You’re sure?’ ” On one hand Khalifa is glad that he’s made it; on the other, the racism that he’s experienced has left a bad taste in the rapper’s mouth. “It’s a good feeling and then it’s like a bad feeling because it’s like, ‘Damn, why do you feel like that about me,’ ” he said. Wiz Khalifa wants to motivate Pittsburgh artists with his success. Earlier in the interview, the Pittsburgh spitter told Sway how his next album will differ from his first. “When I did Rolling Papers, I was like, I’m gonna make these big songs, I’m gonna make these big records,” he said. “What I did before when I made my music was I just went in there and made music and it was what I really liked and what I felt at the time. I kinda developed a pattern of what I was going towards and that’s what I did on this album.” No word on when O.N.I.F.C. will be released, but Wiz says it is pretty much done. He didn’t confirm any guests, but he did reveal that he worked with at least one pretty accomplished producer. “I got production from Pharrell on there. I worked with a lot of different people on this one, but I kept the sound really consistent,” he said. “I made sure everybody that I worked with and everything that I did, they all came to my world with it.” Catch MTV News’ Sway Calloway on “Sway in the Morning,” on Sirius XM Radio’s Shade 45 , Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon ET. Lana Del Rey ‘Felt Good About’ ‘Saturday Night Live’ Performance

Born to Die singer hits back at critics, saying, “I thought I looked beautiful and sang fine.” By John Mitchell Lana Del Rey on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC Lana Del Rey was raked over the Internet coals following her January 14 performance on “Saturday Night Live.” Her takes on “Video Games” and “Blue Jeans” were greeted with near-universal vitriol from critics, music bloggers and even NBC News anchor Brian Williams, who in a now-infamous email to Gawker Media founder Nick Denton called her performance “one of the worst outings in ‘SNL’ history.” But the emerging pop star, whose debut album for Interscope, Born to Die, hit stores Tuesday (January 31), thinks she did a perfectly fine job on the legendary sketch show, telling Rolling Stone, “I actually felt good about it. I thought I looked beautiful and sang fine … I know some people didn’t like it, but that’s just the way I perform, and my fans know that.” Del Rey did admit to being nervous, though in a more general sense, saying live performance has never been her strong suit because she is “not a natural performer or exhibitionist” and that when she was younger she “hated the focus; it made me feel strange.” As the backlash intensified, Daniel Radcliffe, who hosted the January 14 show, came to Del Rey’s defense, telling reporters at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations, “It was unfortunate that people seemed to turn on her so quickly. I also think people are making it about things other than the performance … if you read what people are saying about her online, it’s all about her past and her family and stuff that’s nobody else’s business. I don’t think [the performance] warranted anywhere near that reaction.” Del Rey echoed those same sentiments during her brief sit-down with Rolling Stone, chalking the intensity of the criticism up to people’s general disdain for her public persona. “There’s backlash about everything I do. It’s nothing new,” she told the music mag. “When I walk outside, people have something to say about it. It wouldn’t have mattered if I was absolutely excellent. People don’t have anything nice to say about this project.” Regardless of the criticism, Del Rey is moving forward. Whether she’s a particularly strong live performer or not, her Born to Die album is enjoying a mostly positive reception from music critics … those able to set aside their feelings about her as a public figure and focus on the music itself anyway. Slate ‘s Jonah Weiner commented that he liked the album more after a few listens: “The more time I spend in its company, the more I feel as though I’m approaching it on something like its own terms.” MTV News’ own James Montgomery appreciated Born to Die even more, writing that Del Rey’s set is “positively brimming with atmospherics — soaring, sonorous strings, echoing electronic boom-bap, morose, maudlin guitar crescendos — all of which imbue it with a truly epic (if not unnecessarily dramatic) scope.” The verdict on Del Rey’s musical future — and the impact the “SNL” fiasco and the endless think pieces that popped up in its aftermath — will likely come more sharply into focus this time next week when her first week sales figures are released. SAG Awards 2012 Winners List

‘The Help’ nabs Best Ensemble’ in a stunning upset, while awards-show fave ‘The Artist’ leaves light on wins. By Eric Ditzian Octavia Spencer at the SAG Awards on Sunday Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images The SAG Awards, as we have noted , often have a curious way of letting us know what the Oscars are going to deliver. So when the Screen Actors Guild doled out its golden statuettes on Sunday night (January 29), we couldn’t help but feel there were more than a few hints at how the Academy Awards might shake out in a few weeks. What are we to make of the upset SAG win for “The Help” in outstanding cast in a movie, for instance? Where does this leave “The Artist,” which had been looking increasingly, inevitably like the big champ come Oscar night, yet only won outstanding male performance (Jean Dujardin) at the SAGs? Things were more predictable on the TV side of things. ‘The Help’ Wins Big At SAG Awards

Co-stars Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer triumph in actress categories, while ‘Artist’ star edges out George Clooney for Best Actor. By Kevin P. Sullivan Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis and Brad Pitt onstage at the SAG awards on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images A surprise win for “The Help” for Best Ensemble capped off a rather predictable night at the SAG Awards on Sunday (January 29). The adaptation of the best-selling novel picked up individual awards for both Octavia Spencer, who won Best Supporting Actress, and Viola Davis, who won Best Actress. The rest of the Screen Actors Guild Awards were dominated by category favorites. Christopher Plummer kicked off the night with another win to add his impressive amount of gold for his role in “Beginners.” The legendary actor expressed his job satisfaction by stating, “I can’t tell you what fun I’ve had being a member of the world’s second oldest profession.” A mild shock came in the Best Actor category for film, when French actor Jean Dujardin edged out George Clooney for his role in the awards favorite “The Artist.” The silent ode to the golden era of filmmaking had been a favorite for the evening’s biggest categories, but huge wins from “The Help” stole the thunder from the Oscar favorite. Past winners in the TV categories took the stage at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium as repeat winners. Betty White seemed more confused than anyone when she won the award for Best Actress in a comedy series for the second year in a row. The cast of “Modern Family” stormed the stage with a painfully pre-rehearsed acceptance speech for Best Comedy Series, and Steve Buscemi took to the mic twice for wins in the Best Actor in a Drama Series and Best Drama series categories for “Boardwalk Empire.” Other winners in the television categories included Alec Baldwin for “30 Rock” and Jessica Lange for “American Horror Story.” Kate Winslet and Paul Giamatti won their respective categories for actors in a TV movie or miniseries. Rihanna Has A Tv Deal In The Works

Read more here:

Rihanna will executive produce a television show this summer in the U.K . It’s a fashion show competition.    “I’ve always had a great love of fashion. It’s a constant source of inspiration in my life, and is a big reason why I’ve grown into the person and artist I am today. I have been very fortunate to work with some truly amazing designers and stylists throughout my career, and they have been instrumental in making sure my creative vision reaches the stage. I am excited to follow the journey of our aspiring contestants and see how their individuality influences their efforts during the course of the show.” According to RihannaDaily.com, Rihanna’s show “will celebrate the extraordinary talent and creativity in the British fashion scene. With Rihanna, a fashion icon herself, and Nicola [Roberts] who created her own Dainty Doll make-up range, at the helm, the show will recognise the increasing influence popstars have on mainstream trends.” “I was so flattered when Rihanna asked me to work with her on this show,” Roberts said. “I’m so excited for us to get started on finding a new up and coming British designer who just needs a chance, a little bit of help in getting their skills noticed. There are talented people, undiscovered because they don’t have the means, or their circumstances are too far away from the fashion world.” Read more: http://globalgrind.com/node/824869#ixzz1kbh6RB1Z Rihanna’s show will air fairly soon and the winner of the competition will get a chance to design an outfit for the Bajan’s July 2012 Hyde Park performance.
