Lana Del Rey: ‘I Don’t Love Live Television’

Before ‘Saturday Night Live,’ singer said, ‘You can’t expect too much.’ By Gil Kaufman Lana Del Rey on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC It’s been a rough few days for singer Lana Del Rey. Her instantly legendary awkward network TV debut on “Saturday Night Live”
has been dissected, dissed and defended endlessly since last weekend. But the one thing we haven’t heard in the wake of the polarizing performance is how Del Rey feels about how she did. While she still hasn’t officially commented on the criticism, the singer spoke to the Fuse network just days before the “SNL” gig and said that, frankly, live performance is not really her thing. “You can’t expect too much from my show,” Del Rey said, explaining that her real fans are probably aware that she’s more of a songwriter and studio musician than performer and that she thinks people who come to see her show are really just there to hear the songs they already like. “Sometimes I feel less nervous than other times,” she added. “I don’t love live television. The only tip I have is just pray and just hope that things work out.” That attitude pretty much fits what Del Rey told MTV News
before “SNL,” when she said she finds singing on TV “weird.” “[It] depends on the day,” Del Rey said. “Depends on what’s going on with my family and everyone around me. If I have other things to think about, or I’m trying to get things done for somebody else, and I’m not in my own way, then … I’m like, ‘This doesn’t really matter.’ Sometimes it seems more important to me than other times.” And though everyone from “NBC Nightly News” anchor Brian Williams to actress Eliza Dushku and singer/actress Juliette Lewis (whose tweets have since been deleted) piled on Del Rey in the moment, since the dust has settled a bit, another actress has come out in defense of the singer. “Whitney” star and stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings, who faced her fair share of criticism when her NBC sitcom debuted last year, posted a blog on Thursday in which she pleaded with haters to chill out. “I have many random thoughts. First, everybody calm down,” she wrote. “It’s a little troubling that when a young girl fails at something that we keep kicking her why she is down. I get very protective of girls, especially young performers, because they live a hard, emotionally challenging, often physically challenging life where you are constantly given reasons to be insecure and have panic attacks. I totally get the stuff about her not deserving to be there and I don’t mean to insult musicians in any way if that’s how they feel obviously, but this is an opportunity to show us how hard being a performer is so maybe they can all be cut some slack.” Cummings honed her act for years on the stand-up circuit before breaking through last year with her sitcom and a producer and co-creator credit on “2 Broke Girls,” and she said she doesn’t feel qualified to judge Del Rey’s performance. “It takes a long time to get good, and even when you are good, you can be challenged by new venues and being televised, and cameras, and the uh…fear and terror of being slammed by critics and bloggers,” she wrote. “Plus if you are a woman you also get fashion criticism and if you’re a pretty woman you’re accused of having plastic surgery and if you’re not you’re ‘busted’ and people blog about how they don’t want to f— you … it’s not ideal.” Add into that mix the self-hate and self-criticism that many artists have, and Cummings said even when things go perfectly, it’s still hard. “So when it goes bad, it’s just the worst vortex of misery,” she said. “If she fell on her face, she was there, she felt it, and her having lived it is punishment enough. We don’t need to keep bashing her unless it makes us feel better about ourselves which … isn’t an ideal reason to hate someone.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lana Del Rey Related Artists Lana Del Rey

Costa Concordia Cruise Ship’s Captain Was Jabber Jawing On The Bridge With This Mystery Blonde Jawn When Crash Occurred

That “Chicken Of The Sea” captain Francesco Schettino needs to be really afraid now! A young Moldovan woman was invited onto the bridge of the ill-fated Italian cruise ship that hit a reef and capsized and Italian authorities are now interesting in questioning her regarding that happened the night of the crash. Speculation swirled around the mysterious blond woman – variously described as a ballerina, a ship employee and an undocumented passenger – reportedly seen with the captain of the Costa Concordia shortly before the 17-deck vessel became impaled Friday on a rock off the Italian coast and pitched on its side. Domnica Cemortan, 25, who has dual Moldovan and Romanian citizenship, staunchly defended the actions of 52-year-old Capt. Francesco Schettino, saying he saved lives. London’s Daily Telegraph reported today that she was the guest of one of the ship’s officers and may be the woman that passengers saw drinking and chatting with Schettino a few hours before the Costa Concordia ran aground. Italian authorities, who are investigating the accident and the captain’s conduct, want to interview Cemortan, who according to her Facebook page was born in Chisinau, Moldova, and lives in Romania. The woman’s name was missing from the list of passengers and crew, but Costa Crociere, owners of the boat, said it could provide her ticket number. Cemortan had worked for Costa Cruises, but was thought to be taking a “holiday” on the ill-fated ship. London’s Daily Mail said she was a passenger representative. Italian media speculated Cemortan might have been a special guest of the captain, who is now under house arrest near Naples pending possible charges of multiple manslaughter and abandoning ship. Cemortan said she was dining with friends at the time of the disaster and denied Schettino was also having drinks on deck. The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported investigators were focusing on a series of telephone calls made from the liner after it hit rocks last Friday night off the island of Giglio and before an evacuation was ordered almost an hour later. Corriere della Sera said the investigators were trying to determine if company bosses were trying to avoid the “economic consequences” of an evacuation, which would entail an automatic compensation payment of $38.8 million for the 3,000 passengers aboard. Meanwhile, divers and salvage teams, who resumed their search of the ship after it was suspended Wednesday when the vessel slipped and moved, raced against time to recover bodies and siphon fuel amid forecasts of worsening weather, Sky News reported. “I’m not calm at all,” Environment Minister Corrado Clini said Thursday, according to ANSA news service. “Our time is very limited. We are running the risk of the ship moving, being damaged or the fuel tanks breaking.” The boat, which had just begun its Mediterranean cruise, carried some 230,000 tons of fuel that threatened to leak into the waters off Giglio, a marine sanctuary and popular holiday spot. At least 11 are known dead in the disaster, with more than 20 others still missing. Clini said operations to empty the ship’s fuel reserves would begin only once all the missing were accounted for, ANSA said. Costa Crociere confirmed it would give refunds to all passengers who were onboard and cover any expenses they incurred in the aftermath of the disaster. But the company angered many survivors when one of its executives accused passengers of “sensationalism” in their accounts of the disaster. “I have read, seen and heard so much nonsense from these survivors, who tended as usual to choose sensationalism rather than information,” Costa Crociere assistant director Monica Bova wrote in a letter posted on the Il Secolo website. Seems like ALL these muhfuggas affiliated with that ship are some a$$holes. They really ought to be ashamed. SMH. Source More On Bossip! Cobra Starship’s ‘Middle Finger’ Video Is Bird-Flipping Fun

Hotly tipped MC Mac Miller also shows up in the clip, which is heavy on single-digit salutes. By James Montgomery Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship in “Middle Finger” Photo: Fueled By Ramen In Cobra Starship’s “Middle Finger” video, released Thursday (January 19), there are plenty of allegories to economic injustices, socio-political discourses on a return to the Gold Standard and, perhaps most pointedly, thinly veiled criticisms of the United States’ imperialistic foreign policies and their long-term effects on global de-stabilization. OK, not really. It’s basically just a lot of middle fingers, of all shapes and sizes, ages and genders, thrust defiantly skyward. At one point there’s a callback to their “You Make Me Feel …” video, a “Zoolander”-esque Jeep trek, a cute puppy, some basketball and exactly one old woman getting drenched. Oh, and Mac Miller shows up, too. Of course, all of this is basically one giant contradiction to what frontman Gabe Saporta told MTV News late last year , when he promised the “Middle Finger” clip would feature “a lot of cheekiness … and no middle fingers.” But, then again, if Cobra Starship have proved anything over the years, it’s that they’re not adverse to a good joke , which is probably what Saporta was doing when he touted the complete lack of fingers in the new video. Their videos are never serious, and, well, “Finger” is definitely keeping with that trend. High art this most certainly ain’t. So, much like Big Sean did with his “Dance (A$$)” video — which, like the title implied, featured plenty of posterior — Cobra Starship delivered a clip that’s just one long vignette of bird-flipping. The basic plot follows the guys (and gals) as they traipse across a city, basically being complete jerks to everyone, which, in turn, earns them plenty of one-finger salutes. It’s pretty funny, to be honest. And that’s the best thing you can say about any Cobra Starship vid. Leave the social commentary to the Boss; Saporta and Co. are content churning out the goofiest clips in the rock universe. And “Middle Finger” is a welcome addition to their, uh, oeuvre. Proudly, profanely so. What did you think of the “Middle Finger” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Cobra Starship

‘American Idol’ Premiere Suffers 27 Percent Ratings Drop

Show’s debut saw biggest year-over-year ratings drop ever. By Gil Kaufman Ryan Seacrest and contestant Shaun Kraisman on Wednesday’s season premiere of “American Idol” Photo: Michael Becker / FOX How do you celebrate crushing the competition in the ratings but still facing one of the worst drop-offs in memory? That’s the conundrum ” American Idol ” brass faced on Thursday (January 19) morning when ratings for the season 11 debut of the #1 program in prime time showed a steep decline from last year’s bow even as “Idol” easily won the night. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wednesday night’s two-hour premiere represented the biggest year-over-year ratings drop for a season opener in the show’s decade-long history. Despite pulling in a formidable 21.6 million viewers, the season 11 bow was down 27 percent from last year in ratings and 18 percent in total viewership. Even before the season began, pundits had predicted that “Idol” would likely continue its slow ratings slide while remaining the highest-rated program in prime time. Ratings for the season premiere peaked in 2007 (when it drew a 15.8 rating in the crucial adult demo) and have been on the decline since then. Though there was a marginal bump in 2010 when Ellen DeGeneres joined the judging panel, Wednesday night’s show pulled in a 7.2 rating in the adult (18-49) demo. “Idol” has gotten the usual promotional push from Fox, but considering the full-court press employed to hype former judge Simon Cowell’s “X Factor” in the fall, the buzz surrounding the latest season of “Idol” appears tame by comparison. The show is also likely to get even more of a ratings challenge when rival “The Voice” debuts on NBC following next month’s Super Bowl. Wednesday night’s show went easy on the typical cavalcade of wacky, tone-deaf singers, focusing on more promising contestants such as Phillip Phillips and David Leathers Jr. Once again, though, producers also placed the spotlight on the judging panel, lavishing attention on Steven Tyler’s fangirls’ rapt looks of attention and stolen kisses (not to mention his fianc

Lana Del Rey Calls Performing On Television ‘Weird’

‘Sometimes it seems more important to me than other times,’ Del Rey told MTV News before her ‘Saturday Night Live’ debut. By James Montgomery Lana Del Rey performs “Video Games” on “SNL” on Saturday Photo: NBC Lana Del Rey’s “Saturday Night Live” performance was divisive, to say the very least, as she seemed to battle nerves (and some rather shaky vocal moments), circumstances that only gave more ammunition to her critics. Of course, to be fair, given her rather meteoric rise to the mainstream, Del Rey hasn’t exactly had a ton of time to develop her stage presence, though, as previous television appearances — like this “Later Live … with Jools Holland” performance from October — prove, she’s certainly capable of much more than she showcased on “SNL” (at least vocally). Still, Del Rey will be the first to admit that she’s yet to truly be at ease when it comes to performing on television. In fact, she finds the entire process to be, well, a little off-putting, as she told MTV News last week. “I find it weird … sometimes. [It] depends on the day,” Del Rey said. “You know, like, [it] depends on what’s going on with my family and everyone around me. If I have other things to think about, or I’m trying to get things done for somebody else, and I’m not in my own way, then … I’m like, ‘This doesn’t really matter.’ Sometimes it seems more important to me than other times, I don’t know.” And though, at the time, she couldn’t have predicted how her “SNL” performance would turn out — she said she wasn’t even sure which songs she’d be singing — Del Rey said that, no matter what happened, and despite how weird she may find the entire TV experience, she’s just trying to enjoy the ride. “Things are cool. They always will be, whether the music goes good or not,” she said. “Like, I consider being able to sing a luxury, it doesn’t run my life, it’s not my main focus. I love it, I feel grateful. I’m honored to be on ‘SNL’ I’m happy to be here, but if I didn’t have it, I’d be happy too.” What did you think of Lana Del Rey’s “SNL” debut? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page. Daniel Radcliffe Defends Lana Del Rey SNL Performance

Harry Potter isn’t exactly a superhero, but he’s come to the rescue of Lana Del Rey. The singer has been torn to shreds since her debut Saturday Night Live performance (below), as numerous critics have pointed to her mumbling and awkward demeanor as clear signs this artist is not ready for primetime. Lana Del Rey SNL Performance But Daniel Radcliffe, who hosted the SNL episode in question, told the British press this week “it was unfortunate that people seemed to turn on her so quickly,” adding: “I also think people are making it about things other than the performance. If you read what people are saying about her online, it’s all about her past and her family and stuff that’s nobody else’s business.” It should be interesting to see how sales go for Lana’s debut album, “Born to Die,” which comes out on January 31.

George Clooney And Brad Pitt: A Golden Globes Bromance

Brad Pitt at the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: Getty Images The mutual love between George Clooney and his “Ocean’s Eleven” co-star Brad Pitt is anything but new. But on Sunday night (January 15), their love was on full-display as the pals put on some major emotional PDA for Golden Globe viewers. In pop culture, three’s a trend, and if that’s the case, consider the Pitt/Clooney bromance incredibly trendy. Walking out with a cane, an obvious friendly jab at Pitt’s current use of a cane, Clooney brought the first bromantic moment when he presented the video package paying homage to his friend’s Golden Globe-nominated film, “Moneyball.” “I have to give it back to him or he can’t make it to the bar otherwise,” Clooney said of the cane. “It’s been called a baseball movie that’s not a baseball movie because it transcends the sport. This a David and Goliath story of a general manager, his assistant and a failing Oakland A’s team who takes on powerhouse teams like the New York Yankees. It’s a movie about turning conventional wisdom on its head. And it’s nominated for four Golden Globes, including ones for Jonah Hill and some up-and-comer named Brad Pitt.” Pitt then showed Clooney some love back when he hit the stage to present the package for the Clooney-directed “The Ides of March.” “Young, idealistic campaign workers and dirty politics are the focus of a movie that shows how the desire for power can corrupt anyone in the political process,” he said. “Ryan Gosling is nominated tonight for acting and co-star George Clooney received Golden Globes nominations for his writing and directing of the film.” The final shout-out of the night came when Clooney won for Best Actor — Drama for his work in “The Descendants,” beating out Pitt. While Pitt may not have won, his presence was felt on the stage. “Wow, well, that’s the funny thing about evenings like this. You get the chance to catch up with old friends and see people that you haven’t seen in a long time,” he said before diving into the compliments for Pitt. “I wanted to say it’s nice to see Brad and it’s nice to be able to tell him not just what wonderful work he’s doing in two films this year, but also what wonderful work he does in the world to the rest of the people. I’m a fan,” he added, before also praising “Shame” star Michael Fassbender for his own talents in the frontal-nudity department. In the weeks leading up to the show, Clooney was poised for many a “death match” at the onslaught of awards season.
