‘Battleship’ Trailer: Rihanna Speaks, Aliens Attack

Preview suggests inspiration from Hasbro game and ‘Transformers.’ By Kara Warner “Battleship” Photo: Universal Pictures When we saw the first trailer for Peter Berg’s big-screen adaptation of the Hasbro game Battleship, there were “Blue Crush” and “Armageddon” vibes with regard to how we meet the main characters. Its roster is filled with some of Hollywood’s most attractive players, after all, including Taylor Kitsch , Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna . Now, we have a new trailer that has done away with any expositional elements in favor of full-throttle action sequences. Here are five key elements to take away from this new footage: Man vs. Sea vs. Aliens The trailer opens with sweeping shots over the deep blue sea with the ominous wording: “The ocean. Vast. Unexplored. The perfect place to hide” … an alien race! We see “Tremor”-esque sea-monster aliens, flying-airship-type aliens and even a robotic, human-creature-hybrid alien. They swim, fly and fight — in the ocean! Rihanna Speaks! Last time, all we got of the singing star’s feature-film debut was a quick cut of her on a boat. This time, she’s in on the action, gun in hand, and we see that her character is a trusted, capable, strong Marine. And she speaks too! “My dad said they would come,” she says over shots of the aliens wreaking havoc around the world. “He say, ‘We ain’t alone.’ He say one day we’d find them or they’d find us.” The “Transformers” Effect From the first familiarly synthesized notes of the music to the disclaimer “From the company that brought you “Transformers,” there are more than a few similarities between Michael Bay’s take on the robots in disguise and Berg’s aquatic version. Judging from what we see here, they’re not creatures; they’re robotic, computerized machines that, like Transformers, seem to possess the power to instantly adapt to their surroundings and change size and shape. War Games There are a few hints that the movie draws inspiration from the Hasbro game. Liam Neeson’s character announces the start of the simulated and military-sanctioned “naval war games.” Then, during a meeting at the Pentagon, a high-ranking official says, “Three destroyers are unaccounted for.” This name-checks a type of ship in the game and has just the amount of military official-ness in it to suggest the “Who sunk my battleship?” line might be included somewhere. Supporting-Cast Shout-Outs For those looking for more glimpses of the attractive castmembers, Skarsg

Katy Perry Raves About ‘SNL’ Musical Guest Robyn

Perry tells MTV News the Swedish star is ‘the epitome of effortless cool.’ By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry on the set of “Saturday Night Live” Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — Katy Perry knows a thing or two about being the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” . But this week, she steps up into the role of hostess , and she’s welcoming her former California Dreams tourmate and Swedish pop powerhouse Robyn as the show’s musical guest. When MTV News caught up with the pop stars during rehearsals Thursday, they opened up about reuniting for the late-night show. “It was a pleasure to do rehearsals here today in the ‘SNL’ studio,” Robyn told us. “You’re gonna see what you always see: me, like, dancing and giving it my all.” While Perry and Robyn, an “SNL” first-timer, hung out a bit during a promo shoot — co-starring the show’s city correspondent, Stefon (played by Bill Hader) — she said she hadn’t yet gotten some words of wisdom from the California Gurl. But when we asked Perry if she had any advice for her pal, she didn’t think she had much to offer. “I don’t need to give her advice,” she said. “She needs to give me advice. She’s cool, dude. She makes everyone cooler. … She’s just, like, the epitome of effortless cool, like you look at her wardrobe and you think, ‘I don’t think I could wear that,’ but she wears it and she just owns it.” There’s one look you may see Perry sporting on the show that was inspired by the singer. “She’s always wearing platform shoes, whether it’s, like, creepers or Prada shoes. And she was wearing them way back when, in the beginning of the tour,” she said. “And now Prada’s doing them; everyone’s wearing them. Rihanna’s wearing them. I’m wearing them after all of the convincing, so she’s kind of the tastemaker. It’s gonna be a great show because of that.” What songs are you hoping Robyn performs Saturday night? Katy Perry Gets ‘SNL’ Advice From Russell Brand

‘I’ve only ever hosted, like, dinner parties and birthday parties,’ Perry jokes during rehearsals for this week’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ episode. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry on the set of “Saturday Night Live” Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — On Saturday when “Saturday Night Live” goes, well, live, Katy Perry will be the lady of the night. The pop singer is currently in rehearsals for her hosting gig , and despite some butterflies, she has in her corner someone who really understands the responsibilities of hosting helping her out from afar: her husband, comedian Russell Brand . “I’ve only ever hosted, like, dinner parties and birthday parties. This is a bit more than that,” she joked on set with MTV News. “It’s not as intimidating when you get here because it’s a bit smaller than it looks on TV, and I’m up for a challenge, for something new. I love to be challenged … I married Russell Brand.” Speaking of the devil, Brand hosted the show back in February and his wife has been reaching out to him for any and all advice he might be able to offer. “My husband, of course, every day I call him and I’m like ‘this happened’ and he’s like, ‘I know what that means and here’s the next play-by-play for tomorrow,’ so he’s gotten me really prepared for this week, thankfully.” He’s not the only past “SNL” host that Perry is looking to for guidance. She’s also obsessing over Melissa McCarthy’s October hosting appearance. “Well, I saw the Melissa McCarthy episode and I thought she did a great job,” she said. “She’s so fun to watch and she really brings it, so that’s what I was soaking in this week — Melissa McCarthy and all of her nuances.” This marks the second time this year that Perry has been on the show. She was the musical guest back in 2010, but still managed to show off just how funny she can be during a sketch in which she poked fun at some controversy regarding her ample bosom and a canceled “Sesame Street” appearance . “Well, you’re gonna see some Hello Kitty, some cockney accents, maybe, and some me flubbing my lines, probably laughing out loud at Kristen Wiig ’cause she’s amazing,” Perry teased of this week’s show, which will also include musical guest and past tourmate Robyn. “They’re all really amazing. I feel supercool to be able to be in the same breathing space as them.” Speaking of Wiig, Perry recalls one interesting encounter the two have already shared on set. “It’s a bit stalkerish ’cause last time I was here, I Twittered that I would like a lock of Kristen Wiig’s hair so that I can put it under my pillow every night,” she explained. “And she read it and she actually gave me a card with a lock of her hair with a tiny blue bow in it. … Ever since then, I’ve been obsessed.” Related Artists Katy Perry

‘X Factor’: Chris Rene’s Original Song Wins The Night

Josh Krajcik also impresses judges with the Beatles’ ‘Something.’ By Adam Graham Chris Rene on “X Factor” Photo: FOX Nicole Scherzinger coined the term “Krajcik Magic” on Wednesday’s (December 7) “X Factor,” but it was Chris Rene who worked his mojo the hardest, arguably winning the night with his show-closing original, “Where Do We Go From Here.” Rene’s performance finished out a night that saw the top five contestants performing two songs apiece: one dance hit and one song of each contestant’s choosing. The episode’s drama (because what would “The X Factor” be without a little drama?) came from an “error in communication” that saw the contestants having to switch up their final songs with only 24 hours’ notice. How would they perform under the pressure? Would they remember their lyrics? And what kind of crazy hyperbole would Paula Abdul heap upon the contestants? Turns out they all handled the twist pretty well, with Rene stealing the evening with his original song. Cross-legged and strumming an acoustic guitar, Rene seemed perfectly at ease with “Where Do We Go From Here,” which brought to mind his initial audition when he performed another original, “Young Homie.” “Where Do We Go From Here” had a laid-back, easygoing vibe and wouldn’t have felt out of place being released on Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records. Simon Cowell remarked that at this point in the competition, performing an original is either “stupidity or a stroke of genius.” He ended up calling it the latter, with Rene reacting by jumping up and down in place. Up until Rene’s finale it appeared to be Josh Krajcik’s night, even though it started out shaky with a so-so orchestral take on Rihanna’s “We Found Love.” But he came around on his second song, punching up the Beatles’ “Sometimes” and having Scherzinger call him “the male Adele in the industry right now” before coining the term “Krajcik Magic.” Abdul literally couldn’t find the words to sing his praises, telling the burrito maker, “Adjectives just don’t describe your brilliance anymore, they just don’t measure up.” (Note: Will someone please lend Paula a thesaurus?) Speaking of Adele, Melanie Amaro opened the show with a clubby take on the Brit soul singer’s “Someone Like You” and later took on Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’s “When You Believe.” Those are three gigantic singers to tackle over the course of a season let alone a single night, but Amaro acquitted herself nicely, with Cowell calling her “outstanding” and urging viewers to pick up their phones to vote so he doesn’t end up with another situation like he had with Drew last week. Bubbly 13-year-old Rachel Crow chose B.o.B and Bruno Mars’ “Nothin’ on You” for her opener and returned to last week’s Michael Jackson theme for “Music & Me” for her second performance of the evening. To say Abdul was ecstatic about the two songs would be an understatement. “Your vocal depth transcends all generations” she told Crow after the former, while explaining to her, “You are a wonderful role model. You are every girl’s best friend and every parent’s daydream. You are fantastic and magical,” after the second. Did we mention Abdul also called her “beautifully fearless”? Marcus Canty, who has landed in the bottom two the last two weeks in a row, took on Chaka Khan’s “Ain’t Nobody” and Leon Russell’s “A Song for You.” The first song played more to his strengths, while the second honed in on his vocals, which often suffer in comparison to his abilities as an all-around entertainer. Cowell blew off the second song as “a bit boring,” but Canty’s mentor, L.A. Reid, compared his ability to get up after getting knocked down to no less than Muhammad Ali. “I’ve got your back,” Reid told him. But do voters? One artist is scheduled to be sent home on Thursday’s episode of “The X Factor.” What did you think of Wednesday’s show? Let us know in the comments!

‘Vampire Diaries’ Star Bites Into Top 2011 TV Characters

‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Community’ stars also make MTV News’ top 50. By MTV News staff Joseph Morgan as Klaus on “The Vampire Diaries” Photo: Bob Mahoney/ CW What do Mandy Patinkin, Anthony Bourdain and Aaron Paul all have in common? They’re all on MTV News’ list of the Top 50 TV Characters of 2011, for one thing — and for very different reasons too! Whether it’s Patinkin busting terrorists as the Jewish Jack Bauer on “Homeland,” Bourdain traveling the globe for his two Travel Channel shows or Paul up to no good again on “Breaking Bad,” each one of these actors — and more, mind you — are easily among the best television characters of the year. See who else ranked up there with Mandy, Tony and Aaron as our countdown of 2011’s Top 50 TV Characters continues! 30. Adam Demamp (“Workaholics”) “Workaholics” is the best new show on television, and Adam is the best character. I can’t actually verbalize why he’s so amazing, so here’s a list of memories: 1. When he entered a bodybuilding contest; 2. When he couldn’t party at Hedonism II because his penis fell off; 3. When he explained that Fred Durst is “a dry guy.” Honestly, you kind of had to be there. But rest assured, it’s worth going! -Rya Backer 29. Tammy One (“Parks and Recreation”) As you read this, Tammy 1 might be out there in the world plotting some terrible ways to make Ron Swanson’s life a living nightmare. Cold, calculated and a complete sociopath, Patricia Clarkson’s interpretation of the most feared person to ever walk through Pawnee, Indiana, is nothing less than brilliant. Plus, any woman who can convince Ron that voluntarily shaving off his signature mustache is good for him gets a free pass to be on this list. -Jocelyn Vena 28. Saul Berenson (“Homeland”) To the young patriots out there who are thinking about a career with the CIA, please first consider the life of Saul Berenson, Mandy Patinkin’s character on “Homeland.” It’s a life filled with high-pressure days and lonely nights that often include eating in a dark, empty office, spreading peanut butter with a ruler found in a desk drawer. Yet even while carrying the weight — and fate — of the world on his shoulders, Berenson manages to do it with a wicked sense of humor. And mellow, even-keeled Berenson is a great foil for his moody, impulsive prot

Lady Gaga Says Next Album Is ‘Beginning To Flourish’

‘I have the name for it,’ Gaga reveals to MTV News, while producer Fernando Garibay says they’re hoping to ‘outdo’ Born This Way. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias and Vanessa WhiteWolf Lady Gaga Photo: MTV News Lady Gaga is perhaps the busiest monster of them all. Just six months after dropping her chart-topping Born This Way, the Mother Monster is already hard at work on its follow-up. “I’ve started writing it and I have the name for it and all the concepts are beginning to flourish and take place,” she told MTV News at Jingle Ball in Los Angeles, where she also talked about her Grammy nods and “Marry the Night” video . “I’m excited to put it out, but it’s not done yet. So I’ll put it out when it’s done.” BTW contributor Fernando Garibay recently stopped by the MTV News offices in Santa Monica, California, and shared the vision he has in mind for Gaga’s next release . “I get a little bit of anxiety thinking about that right now,” the producer said of plans for the album. “I wanna just always try to outdo ourselves, our songs. “They’re already incredible songs. But I feel like she’s so young,” he said, adding that the record is in its early stages and that “there’s a lot of room to grow.” While Gaga will hit the road on the Born This Way Tour next year, Garibay said that won’t halt the recording process. “The last record we made in bus stops and hotel rooms,” he said. “Wherever she’s at, we’ll make it.” However the recording schedule pans out, Garibay knows he and Gaga will continue experimenting with new sounds. “She’s the perfect platform for me to express myself,” he said. “You can do stuff with her that you can’t do with anybody else. It’s amazing.” What are you expecting from Gaga’s next album? Share your ideas in the comments! Related Videos MTV First: Lady Gaga Related Artists Lady Gaga

Blink-182’s ‘After Midnight’ Video ‘A Little Darker’

‘The song itself is about troubled love,’ Mark Hoppus explains, though Tom DeLonge promises new video is mostly ‘about sex.’ By James Montgomery Blink-182 on the set of their video for “After Midnight” Photo: MTV News Blink-182 ‘s “Up All Night” video was a rather-raucous vision of the teen-pocalypse, with fans running roughshod over (and partying hard on) a deserted suburban landscape. So when it came time to shoot the video for “After Midnight,” the second proper single from their Neighborhoods album , the guys wanted to go a different route — think less wanton destruction, a general lack of exploding cars and waaay less partying. Of course, they ended up going with the same guy who directed “Up All Night,” but that’s sort of beside the point. “We went through probably 30 different treatments for this video, and a lot of them were great, and a lot of them weren’t so great but [director] Isaac [Rentz’s] stuck out as a really cool idea,” Mark Hoppus told MTV News on the set of the “Midnight” video, in Tustin, California. “We wanted it to be something different than just a bunch of people having fun and having a party; we wanted it to be a little darker, a little more troubled, and Isaac’s treatment did that.” So while they’re once again working with Rentz, Blink’s “After Midnight” clip is shaping up to be a far cry from “Up All Night,” mostly because, as Hoppus explained, the song is about dark things — while still remaining true to the band’s roots, of course. “The song itself is about troubled love, it’s about damaged people who fall in love,” he said, “and the video takes place in a psychiatric ward, and this guy and this girl escape from their rooms and have a night of romance and passion and fun and wild existence …” “It’s about sex,” Tom DeLonge jokingly added. “It’s not, it’s not that tawdry,” Hoppus replied, laughing. “Why would you make it that cheap?” Related Artists blink-182

Jay-Z Hasn’t Given Astro A ‘Check Or A Contract’

‘I have never met anyone from Roc Nation,’ ‘X Factor’ whiz kid tells MTV News. ‘I’d love to, but I’m not signed right now.’ By Rob Markman Astro Photo: MTV News Yes, they both rep Brooklyn to the fullest, but Jay-Z has not signed “X Factor” ‘s rap wunderkind Astro. “I don’t have a check or a contract, so as far as I know, I’m not signed,” the 15-year-old MC told MTV News when he stopped by our newsroom on Monday (December 5). Last week, rumors that Hov signed the L.A. Reid-backed Astronomical Kid began to swirl online but the upstart rapper shot down the buzz. “I have never met anyone from Roc Nation. I’d love to, but I’m not signed right now to anyone,” he said. “Nobody ever hit me up about that — just go on the Internet and it’s up there. But I’m not signed as far as I know.” On last Thursday’s episode, after giving a Michael Jackson-themed performance the night before, Astro was eliminated from the competition. Not that he was sweating it. “Hey, man, it’s for the better,” the MC told “X Factor” host Steve Jones during his exit interview. “The only reason I’m mad is ’cause I don’t get to see my girl that lives in Cali, but I will be back. … I love my time. I’ve gained a lot of fans. People got picket signs tonight. I wish y’all the best of luck.” Astro wowed judges with his initial audition for the show when he rapped his own original composition, the viral hit “Stop Looking at My Mom.” And during his “X Factor,” run he took hip-hop hits like Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and Jay-Z’s “Show Me What You Got,” effectively making them his own by adding new lyrics to the already popular beats. Now that he is off the show, the Brooklyn whiz kid is looking forward to getting back into the studio and eventually signing a deal. “I just want to be in a place where I’m comfortable 100 percent. I just want to be able to release my music, do my movies, [and] everything is fair,” he said of his dream deal. “I just want to be able to have fun doing it. I don’t want music to be a job for me; I want it to be something I’m doing for fun. As long it’s not a job then you’re straight.” Related Artists Jay-Z
