Nickelback’s ‘Bottoms Up’: The Real Party Rock Anthem

We hammer down with the year’s most brilliantly unapologetic banger, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Chad Kroeger of Nickelback Photo: Getty Images I don’t want to talk about Lana del Ray’s lips, chillwave or Drake’s feelings anymore. Those topics are all bookish and ultimately pointless, the kind of things debated by folks who enjoy nothing quite as much as the sound of their own voice, discussion points during shift breaks at the co-op or between courses at winter solstice parties. You know, nerd stuff. No, today, I want to talk about Nickelback , and their stupendous new single “Bottoms Up,” a song that is about nothing more than getting totally sh–faced, and one whose brilliance I am unapologetically in awe of. To the uninitiated, “Bottoms Up” is one of two singles Nickelback released simultaneously last month, in the lead-up to their sure-to-be-massive Here and Now album. It is not the one that features lines like “Hand in hand forever/ That’s when we all win,” because that’s the bruising ballad “When We Stand Together.” It is very much the one about consuming every inebriating substance under the sun, a list that includes, but is not limited to: Jim Beam, Jack Daniel’s, Black-Tooth Grins — Dimebag certainly would’ve approved — 80-proof hooch and, of course, “straight gasoline.” In other words, it is the kind of song a band like Nickelback (who, and take this however you wish, seem to write songs only as excuses to finance their latest Can-Am three wheeler ) was practically placed on this earth to write. It is not, by any means, a smart song — it is a sublimely stupid one, in which frontman Chad Kroeger growls about wanting to “kick a hole in the sky” and rhymes “bar” with “fire” — mainly because he can — over a bed of snarling, skuzzy riffs and flammable solos (and drums that sound like they were lifted from Eddie Money ). It seems destined to take its rightful place alongside tracks like AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” or Ratt’s “Round and Round” on strip-club playlists all across this great land. It sounds like it was unearthed from a time capsule buried in 1999 (or 1984), which automatically makes it the most rock-and-roll song released this year. So why is it brilliant? Well, several reasons spring to mind. For starters, there’s the chorus, which goes ” ‘NOTHER ROUND/ FILL ‘ER UP/ HAMMER DOWN/ GRAB A CUP/ BOTTOMS UP!” (CAPS mine, but, I mean, if it were possible to sing in ALL CAPS, Nickelback would certainly do it here.) It’s sort of ingenious in a totally not-genius way and will instantly worm its way into your brain. There are the reactions the song gets from folks I’ve played it for, which run the gamut from “Two minutes in and all I want to do is shotgun a beer” and “This should be the official song of being in a boat on a lake” to “It sounds like Slaughter.” There’s the fact that I’ve listened to it something like 467 times since I interviewed the band last week, and it’s made me want to do pushups, fight someone, put the hammer down and go to the bathroom. But most of all, it’s that its very existence proves that no one knows their audience quite like Nickelback. Because unlike Coldplay , Linkin Park or Metallica — who are busy making electro albums , albums that reference the Bhagavad Gita and albums with Lou Reed , respectively — Nickelback know better than to mess with what got them here. “Bottoms Up” is an unabashed ode to boozing it up, keeping the good times rolling and setting things ablaze. It is precisely the kind of jam their fans want to hear them making, the soundtrack to Saturday night and a million tailgate extravaganzas. It is big and bold and brash and ballsy, because that’s exactly the kind of band Nickelback are. There will be no Rihanna cameos , thank you very much. And I’m not just making this up, either. Kroeger told me as much when I sat down with him, admitting that “Bottoms Up” may very well be their masterwork. “It’s a drinking anthem. I mean, it’s harder to write those songs than it is to write those social-awareness type songs — it really is. Some of the stuff’s got to be a little tongue-in-cheek. There’s got to be some clever stuff there, you know, and you’ve got to be descriptive. But when you get done listening to it, you need to have the feeling of just wanting to grab a bottle of Jack. And I think we got there, because we’d bring friends over all the time, and it was just like, ‘You are now a test subject! Hit play; turn it up nice and loud.’ And the song’s over, and they’d be like, ‘I want to drink. I want to drink something right now. ‘ And we were like, ‘Yes!’ ” Yes, indeed. Because listening to “Bottoms Up,” I am struck with no other notion quite as much as “I want to drink. I want to drink something right now, ” which means that in every conceivable way, the song is a success. Forget LMFAO and all their DayGlo excess; Nickelback don’t need that crap to make a “Party Rock Anthem.” You may hate them, but you cannot discount their brilliance — not any more. “Bottoms Up” is the kind of slammer no other band is capable of making, mostly because the bands that were making them no longer walk this earth. It is a market-tested, precision-guided party, with no hangover in sight. Because NB are smart enough to leave the headaches to the brainy folks. They just wanna rock. And drink. A lot. Hammer down, now and forever. What do you think of the Nickelback party-starter? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nickelback

Baby, Baby, Baby?? Whoa! 20-Year-Old Woman Says Backstage Love Left Her With A Gut Full Of Bieber And They Now Have A Son

Yes, Justin Bieber. We KNEW that little boy was poking and stroking. Via RadarOnline : A 20-year-old California woman has filed a bombshell lawsuit against teen pop icon Justin Bieber alleging he is the father of her three-month-old baby boy, Star magazine is exclusively reporting in its new issue. Mariah Yeater is demanding the singer take a paternity test “to scientifically confirm” he is the father of the child, according to court papers obtained by Star. The papers were filed in late October and Yeater asks the court for Bieber “to provide adequate support for my baby.” In an affadavit signed under penalty of perjury Yeater says she was 19 years old when she had sex with the underage star backstage at one of his concerts in Los Angeles. Backstage? And you were more underage then her?? Dang, Bieber! Bieber’s reps have strenuously denied the accusations but a court hearing has been set for later this year. In a statement to RadarOnline.com, Bieber’s said: “While we haven’t yet seen the lawsuit, it’s sad that someone would fabricate malicious, defamatory, and demonstrably false claims. We will vigorously pursue all available legal remedies to defend and protect Justin against these allegations.” We’d like to think that this 20-year-old woman wouldn’t put herself out there like that if… Oh wait, Maury Povich has been making a living off of unsure women and their paternity tests for years, huh. Wonder how much she’s gonna get for the exclusive interview about her night (or nights) of getting that fever from Bieber. That should pay for at least one year of daycare.

POLL: What Was the Worst Celebrity Marriage Ever?

Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kris Humpries after just 72 days of marriage. Perhaps her fairy tale wedding was not what it was meant to be after all. Or maybe it was, given who we’re talking about. She made millions off her big day and E! can start looking for her next future ex-husband in the near future. They’re far from the only stars to tie the knot only to bail almost immediately, however. Where do Kim and Kris rank among the worst celebrity marriages? In the last decade, stars like Jennifer Lopez, Eddie Murphy and Pamela Anderson (twice!) have seen unions dissolve within the same year of their nuptials. Heck, Britney Spears tied the knot to Jason Alexander in Vegas and had it annulled 55 hours later. Time enough for him to get it in, and that’s about it. One of the shortest in recent times came when Chris Kattan wed Sunshine Tutt on June 28, 2008 … and divorced her August 10. Terrible marriage, awesome name. Even more recently, Tara Reid and Zack Kehayov tied the knot in August of 2011, but now she’s saying it was bogus and never even legal. Weaksauce. Which union was the worst of them all? Vote below! Admittedly we kept the list very recent and defined “worst” by shortest. To submit your own as an honorable mention, hit the comments section below!

Prince William & Kate Middleton Fan Mail: Off the Hook!

How popular are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge? Do we even have to answer that question at this point? Prince William and Kate Middleton have received about 60,000 letters and cards of goodwill from members of the public since their engagement nearly a year ago. The number of messages peaked again around the time of the royal wedding in April – and the coolest thing about it is that a return address guarantees a reply. “There was everything from posters made by classes of schoolchildren to cards sent by other members of the public,” says a Palace aide of the letters to the royals. A group of junior girl guides – called Rainbows – in Glasgow sent a congratulations card, and then got word that the Duke and Duchess were “immensely touched.” Workers in the couple’s office in St. James’s Palace are still going through all the letters and cards in a bid to answer them, which they say they do … eventually. “It will take quite a while for the small team to get to answer them all, but everyone gets a reply if there is a return address,” says a Palace aide of the fan mail. Sadly, it is not known if Pippa Middleton responds to date requests. [Photo: WENN.com]

We remain friends and wish each other the best.” Most couples ask the media to be considerate of their privacy at a time like this, but let’s be serious: Kris Jenner is likely planning an interview blitz for her daughter as we type. Kim Kardashian Wedding Sneak Peek So, what caused the split? Sources say Kim and Kris could not settle on where to settle down, with Humphries assuming the pair would end up in his native Minnesota, but Kardashian wanting to be closer to Las Vegas red carpets family. Watch The Throne Concert Review [EXCLUSIVE]

See the article here:

From the moment that Jay-Z and Kanye West took the stage at Philips Arena — on identical cubes with images of vicious Rottweilers rising from both ends of the venue — there was an inescapable feeling that there was going to be something regal about this show. After all, it’s the Watch the Throne tour, and Kanye and Jay did not disappoint. They dynamic duo kicked things off with “H.A.M.,” the first unofficial single from their joint “Watch the Throne” album. From there it was a dizzying, highly-entertaining, at times emotional 2 1/2 plus hour thrill ride of hit after hit. No special guests showed up at the concert, but Jay and Yay have so many hits between them that was a minor factor. The spectacular light and laser show and fiery pyrotechnics certainly helped, even if people were expecting T.I. to come out for his verse on the “N*ggas in Paris” remix. There was also no way the two could perform all of their hits, and it was noticeable that Jay didn’t perform any songs from his classic debut “Reasonable Doubt” or his “American Gangster” album. After warming up the receptive crowd a huge American flag was unfurled on the main stage as Jay-Z and Kanye appeared together to perform their smash hit “Otis.” For the rest of the night the two superstars alternated between their respective hits and songs from Watch the Throne. At one point Kanye even shed a tear while performing overly-Auto Tuned versions of “Heartless” and “Runaway.” Raised in Chicago, a lot of fans might not realize that Kanye was actually born in Atlanta and his father still lives here. Jay made a point to announce to the crowd early in the show, referencing Yay, “He was born in ATL!” Jay also proclaimed proudly later on in the evening: “ATL, you are now looking at the best of black excellence!” One of the most poignant moments of the show was when the arena played Louis Armstrong’s “What A Wonderful World” and everyone sang along right before Jay and Yay went into “No Church in the Wild.” The only other moment that came close to that was when the two stars had everyone hold up a cell phone or lighter during “Made in America,” illuminating the entire arena. In the end Watch the Throne was an amazing show that lived up to all its hype. But should we expect anything less from two of hip hop’s greatest talents?
