Caught: Jon Stewart Shows GOP’s ‘New’ Pledge Exactly The Same As The Old

Last night on “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart lambasted the GOP for their new “Pledge to America,” a promise of fresh, new ideas that sound identical to the Republican rhetoric of the last 20 years. Stewart began by remembering two years ago when Republican senators previously pledged to make the GOP a “party of new ideas,” trying things like forum website America Speaking Out, and other ideas that ultimately failed. Now, with midterms around the corner, Republicans have are trying to reinvent themselves once more, promising things like reduced spending, smaller government, permanent tax cuts, and other things that sound oddly familiar. “Your fresh new ideas,” Stewart said, “sound slightly – I'm sorry, did I say slightly? – sound EXACTLY like your old ones.” As he does best, Stewart worked the clips and showed side by side comparisons of 2010 Republicans pledging to do the same things as those of the last 20 years. “This isn't even a sequel,” Stewart said. “This is a shot-by-shot remake!” added by: atomiclegion

Netflix CEO: "Americans are somewhat self-absorbed"

“THR: Are you concerned that American Netflix subscribers will look north and ask for the same discount Canadians get at $7.99? Hastings: How much has it been your experience that Americans follow what happens in the world? It's something we'll monitor, but Americans are somewhat self-absorbed.” http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3if1d3902d12574ec22296… added by: lvp

Iska River Disappears Overnight

The Iska River in Slovenia vanished overnight after residents reported hearing loud crashing sounds. ::..::.. On Tuesday, the Iska River was bubbling past the village of the same name. On Wednesday… it was gone. Residents say they heard crashing and drumming sounds during the night. When they went to the river the next morning, they watched what was left of it disappear before their eyes. Geologists believe the water disappeared into the porous limestone riverbed and is now flowing under ground. It's said the same thing happened to the river before during World War II. It's not clear when or if the water will resurface. ::..::.. http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6898039n added by: vancitysage

Kanye West To Perform On ‘Saturday Night Live’

MC will appear on the October 2 episode, which ‘Breaking Bad’ star Bryan Cranston will host. By Jocelyn Vena Kanye West Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ Getty Images Kanye West will appear as the musical guest on the October 2 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” which will be hosted by “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston. The high-profile appearance, which NBC confirmed to MTV News on Tuesday (September 21) morning, will come less than a month after West closed out the VMAs with the debut of a new song, “Runaway.” West may have dissed the show in his track “Power” — where he raps, “F— ‘SNL’ and the whole cast. Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass” — but it doesn’t seem that the bookers minded very much. West’s last “SNL” appearance came during its 2007 season premiere; he also appeared in a sketch during that episode, which was hosted by NBA star LeBron James. There is no word on whether he will act during this upcoming appearance. West appears to be settling scores in 2010. During his VMA appearance, he laid to rest the Taylor Swift incident from a year prior. She too seemed to be putting the skirmish behind them in her new song, the tentatively titled “Innocent.” During the year between West’s interruption of Swift’s Best Female Video acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs and the beef-squashing earlier this month, both Swift and former beau Taylor Lautner appeared on “SNL” (on separate occasions) and took a few shots at the rapper. West is the latest high-profile musical act added to the NBC show’s lineup. Katy Perry is set to perform on the show’s season premiere on September 25, which will be hosted by “SNL” alum Amy Poehler. USA Today reports that Bruno Mars, who was arrested over the weekend for alleged cocaine possession, is set to perform on the October 9 episode of “SNL,” which “Glee” star Jane Lynch will host . Did Lady Gaga Have Any Impact On ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Vote?

In spite of DADT vote stalling in Senate, supporters of repeal say Gaga’s tireless advocacy has garnered issue global recognition. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga speaks in in Portland, Maine on Monday Photo: Cliff Kucine/ Getty Images There are many different ways for celebrities to leverage their notoriety to help a cause. They can play a concert, write a check, make a PSA or, as in the case of actor Sean Penn, live in a meager tent in an earthquake-ravaged country for six months and run their own relief organization. But few stars have given as much in as short a time as Lady Gaga has to the cause of repealing the U.S. military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. “The reality is that on Saturday night we were looking at what we could do on Monday, knowing that even if we sent out an alert to our base of 80,000 supporters, we’d be talking to the same people,” said Trevor Thomas, spokesperson for the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a national organization dedicated to ending DADT. “We wanted to expand our reach and reach more people nationally and, more than anything, the two swing senators [in Maine] who could give us a chance.” The SLDN quickly hatched a plan to organize a rally in Maine on Monday in an attempt to get swing-vote Republican Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to possibly change their votes on the repeal. That’s where Lady Gaga came in. The pop icon had walked the white carpet at the VMAs with four SLDN members, shouted them out from the stage, turned her website over to the issue and posted public video pleas about the issue. When word came of this last-minute appeal, once again, she stepped up. According to Thomas, the singer finished a show in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday night, hopped on a bus and took a 15-hour ride to Maine, personally writing her address on the way. “The dedication from her was amazing,” he said. “She wrote the speech, did the research and talked to people, and it did exactly what we need to do — highlight the issue to young people and others who might not have heard about this cause. But most importantly, we did it in this key area we needed it in.” The Gaga speech garnered massive local and national coverage for the issue, with stories in the Denver Post, USA Today and The New York Times, among others. “You can work for months to place one story in the Times’ print section, and even if politics prevail and we lose the vote, more people know about the DADT repeal than did yesterday,” Thomas said. And while Gaga’s mighty push to lock in the necessary votes didn’t save the day when the crucial Senate vote took place on Tuesday (September 21), Thomas said her help undoubtedly had a huge impact and put a global spotlight on the policy. From the night Gaga first spoke out on the repeal at the 2010 VMAs and redirected traffic from her official website to the SLDN site until 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Thomas said, 314,446 people clicked to the “take action” tab, which sent them to a site listing the phone numbers where U.S. senators could be reached about the vote. While it’s unknown how many of those clicks turned into actual phone calls, Thomas said he was “100 percent sure” that the site would not have gotten nearly that many visits without Gaga’s efforts. The total number of visitors was nearly four times the amount of supporters SLDN had gathered pre-Gaga, but Thomas pointed out an even more impressive number. During that same two-week period, the pages on the SLDN website with background information on DADT got 520,298 page views. In contrast, during the first two weeks of the month, the site had 13,000 visitors and 30,000 page views. “There are many people who are high-profile who speak out in a positive manner on LGBT issues,” Thomas said. “But the difference here is she asked, ‘What can I do?’ at a time when it was critically important for the passage of our bill. Not only did she say that, but she asked how and when to do it. When you look at the past couple of weeks, you see not just strategic tweets but the video address that hit days before the critical vote and which was driving many calls to the Senate switchboard. I don’t know of many entertainers who at the critical moment for a bill would stop their website and direct it to a ‘take action’ page for a relatively small group trying to push an issue crucially important to servicemembers and those who support them.” Before Tuesday’s vote, Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid — the Nevada senator exchanged DADT-related tweets last week with Gaga — said the Democratic boss welcomed Mother Monster’s advocacy. “We appreciate the support of Lady Gaga and her supporters,” Manley said. “Sometimes that can have an impact, especially when you are as apparently committed as she is to the cause.” Even with all of Gaga’s work, CNN reported that both Collins and Snowe said Gaga’s appearance at Monday’s rally in Maine had no effect on their crucial votes; the final 56-43 tally helped ensure that the Senate would not open a DADT repeal discussion during its current session. Collins, in fact, supported the repeal, but told the network she felt she had to stay in line with her colleagues and vote against debate for procedural reasons. Bruno Mars Arrest Was Over Alleged Cocaine Possession

Police say singer/songwriter had 2.6 grams of white powder on him at time of arrest. By Gil Kaufman Bruno Mars in Las Vegas Police custody Photo: LVPD More details have emerged about what led to singer/songwriter Bruno Mars ‘ arrest early Sunday morning in Las Vegas on drug-possession charges. According to a copy of the arrest document provided by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the “Just the Way You Are” singer was arrested around 1:50 a.m. at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino — where he had performed earlier in the night — for felony possession of 2.6 grams of a “white powdery substance” that tested positive as cocaine. Mars (born Peter Gene Hernandez), 23, was taken in after Las Vegas police received a narcotics call from someone at the Hard Rock. According to the report, a bathroom attendant approached a security officer at the facility to say that there was a man in a bathroom stall who might be using drugs, telling the guard that a male in the bathroom was “taking a really long time.” The attendant said he observed the suspect in a striped shirt with a “baggy of white powder substance.” The attendant and the security guard approached the suspect as he exited the stall, and the guard ordered Mars to hand over whatever narcotics he had on him. “This is when Hernandez, with his left hand, pulled out a white powder substance, which was consistent with cocaine, from his left-front jeans pocket.” When the guard asked Mars if he knew why he was being detained, the singer reportedly said, “Can I speak to you honestly, sir?” and then said he “did a foolish thing and has never used drugs before.” Mars was arrested when the substance tested positive for cocaine, and he was then transported to the Clark County Detention Center, where he was booked on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance. A spokesperson for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that the case against Mars is still under review and that no charges have been filed yet. He was released from custody at 7:45 a.m. Sunday and has been ordered to return to court for his arraignment November 18. A spokesperson for Mars’ label had not released a statement on the incident at press time. Related Artists Bruno Mars

Remember When SNL Hosts Were a Glorious Surprise?

The hits just keep on coming for Saturday Night Live . If we’re to believe RadarOnline.com — and forgive me for digging out my trusty grain of salt — Lindsay Lohan is “confirmed” to host SNL on Dec. 4. She joins the already announced Amy Poehler, Bryan Cranston, Jane Lynch, Emma Stone and Jon Hamm as planned hosts for season 36. So far, so good. Except there’s only one problem with knowing this information so far in advance: It ruins the surprise.
