Hello Good People of Current! I'm working on this awesome project~ and I was thinking about how my time with speaking with you, reading your comments and reactions to the good news and bad inspired the creation of this project. And I got to thinking…OMG! I have to tell them! It's called People and the Planet, and it is all about how people are http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/peopleandtheplanet/people-and-the-planet Here is the even longer piece in Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/leah-lamb/sex-pandas-kittens-and-sw_b_695770.html I have a dream of creating stories that reconnect people to the planet, and reclaim the way we tell stories about the environment. What? You say. Reclaim? Yes. Reclaim. Let me tell you why. After nearly two years of consuming and producing environmental video and blog content for Current's Green Channel, I nearly crawled away in a deep depression about the state of the world. I suffered from too-much-eco-news-itis. So I sublet my house, and retreated to a cabin perched on a cliff on the Lost Coast to complete my novel (and escape the world as we know it). I unplugged from the Internet (as best I could), and plugged into the planet. I spent the last three months walking in the woods, walking by the ocean, and consuming information from a different source: the natural world. I've never been happier. What happened is that I started to see a huge disconnect between my experience in the environment, and the news I consume about the environment. And then I started thinking about the key reasons about why I went into producing media: to motivate, mobilize and inspire people to be stewards for our planet. Houston. We have a problem. Because I don't know about you, but that majority of news I read about the environment these days sucks…… added by: leahl

A six-year-old boy who nearly went blind in one eye can now see again after he was told to play on a Nintendo games console. Ben Michaels suffered from amblyopia, or severe lazy eye syndrome in his right eye from the age of four. His vision had decreased gradually in one eye and without treatment his sight loss could have become permanent. His GP referred him to consultant Ken Nischal who prescribed the unusual daily therapy. Ben, from Billericay, Essex, spends two hours a day playing Mario Kart on a Nintendo DS with his twin Jake. Ben wears a patch over his good eye to make his lazy one work harder. The twins' mother, Maxine, 36, said that from being 'nearly blind' in the eye, Ben's vision had 'improved 250 per cent' in the first week. She said: 'When he started he could not identify our faces with his weak eye. Now he can read with it although he is still a way off where he ought to be. 'He was very cooperative with the patch, it had phenomenal effect and we’re very pleased.' Mr Nischal of Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, said the therapy helped children with weak eyesight because computer games encourage repetitive eye movement, which trains the eye to focus correctly. 'A games console is something children can relate to. It allows us to deliver treatment quicker,' he said. 'What we don’t know is whether improvement is solely because of improved compliance, ie the child sticks with the patch more, or whether there is a physiological improvement from perceptual visual learning.' The consultant added that thousands of youngsters and adults could benefit from a similar treatment. After much speculation and anticipation, Nintendo has announced the world's first ever 3D handheld games console at the E3 expo in Los Angeles. Unlike 3D TVs and cinema screens, gamers using the 3DS won't need to wear daft-looking special glasses to see things in full multi-dimensional glory. Looking a lot like pre-existing DS handhelds, the 3DS will have improved graphics, a slide pad controller and an internal gyroscope and motion sensor (like the iPhone). It'll be able to show 3D films on its 3.5-inch screen and, intriguingly, is able to take 3D photographs using the two lenses mounted on the back of the device. http://www.techtree.com/India/News/E3_2010_Nintendo_3DS_Announced/551-111804-585… added by: richjm

Fans can emulate King of Pop’s moves in new dancing and singing game. By Mawuse Ziegbe Michael Jackson Photo: Michel Linssen/Redferns If you’re over checking out the late Michael Jackson ‘s signature moves in old video footage, soon you’ll be able to experience the King of Pop’s swagger in a whole new way. Gaming company Ubisoft has announced that it is launching a video game based on Jackson’s legendary music and performances. The game will be built on MJ’s singular dance style, and players will be able to groove along to mega-hits like “Billie Jean” and “Beat It.” According to a Ubisoft statement posted on MichaelJackson.com , gamers will get the chance to learn and re-create some of Jackson’s dance moves. A Ubisoft rep confirmed to MTV News that while there is no title for the game as of press time, the game should be available later in the year, in time for the holiday season. The company is staying mum on many of the details, but when asked whether the Jackson game would be accompanied by unique gaming hardware like the “Dance Dance Revolution” dance pad or “Rock Band” guitar, the rep told MTV News via e-mail that “the game is based upon performance (so both singing and dancing).” Ubisoft worked with the executors of the Michael Jackson estate in the creation of the game. Estate co-executor John Branca said that fusing gaming with music is consistent with Jackson’s game-changing legacy. “Michael always pushed every limit when it came to technology to give his fans unforgettable entertainment experiences, whether it involved his videos, his recordings or his concerts,” Branca said in the statement. Co-executor John McClain agreed: “This game is a natural extension of what he would be doing today to raise his artistry to even greater heights for his fans of all generations.” The Jackson game will be available for Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 (with the new Kinect device ), PlayStation 3 with PlayStation Move support and PSP. 3-D movies and camera, ‘Kid Icarus: Uprising’ and ‘Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’ dominate company’s keynote presentation. By Brian Warmoth The Nintendo 3DS Photo: Nintendo Nintendo came to the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles with very little information circulating in public about its upcoming portable 3-D system, the 3DS. While Microsoft and Sony have focused on gaming in living-room spaces with Xboxes and PlayStation 3’s this year, Nintendo opted to surprise its audience with the announcement that their DS successor would play 3-D movies from major studios and take 3-D pictures. Together with an extensive list of third-party developers, such as Activision, EA, Harmonix, Konami, Capcom and others, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata presented logos from franchises including “Metal Gear Solid,” “Saints Row” and more, which he expects to see appear on the new portable device. “In this case, I believe we will enjoy our biggest launch support ever from third parties,” Iwata said onstage. “To all of you developers and publishers, I want you to know that [I am] truly grateful for the support [you’ve offered].” Iwata and Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime focused mainly on bringing 3-D viewing to a mass market without the use of glasses and reintroducing the company’s classic character Pit for the 3DS title “Kid Icarus: Uprising.” Still, the 3DS’ farthest-reaching impact may come from the system’s features that extend beyond gaming. “Nintendo 3DS is also capable of displaying 3-D Hollywood movies,” Iwata explained. “We are not announcing any specific plans [this week], but at our booth, you will find demonstrators showing you [examples] from Disney, Warner Bros. and DreamWorks. You can see DreamWorks’ ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ Warner Bros.’ ‘Legend of the Guardians’ and Disney’s ‘Tangled,’ all playing in 3-D.” Though no distribution plans, partnerships or agreements were detailed, the Iwata did state that Nintendo will be the first to enter the 3-D sector of handheld entertainment. “This is the first time any such 3-D content has been demonstrated without the need to wear glasses,” Iwata said. “It’s also, it seems, one of the first times such content will be commercially available for a mobile device.” The 3DS will incorporate a “Slide Pad” to adjust imaging on its 3-D display, as well as a motion sensor, gyro sensor and two camera lenses. “What this means is you can also take photos and view them in 3-D,” he stated. In addition to “Uprising,” Nintendo showed demonstrations from its new Wii title “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword,” which saw its name premiere during the keynote address along with word that it would launch in 2011. That announcement was joined by a first look at “Donkey Kong Country Returns” and “Kirby: Epic Yarn,” which will reintroduce two of Nintendo’s longest-running franchises. The already-known Metroid title “The Other M,” meanwhile, received an August 31 release date, and the new offering “Mario Sports Mix” received a 2011 release window. Third-party titles on display included “Just Dance 2,” a new “GoldenEye” game for the Wii featuring the voice of Daniel Craig, “Epic Mickey” and “NBA Jam,” which Fils-Aime emphasized as an exclusive. “Technology is only a tool,” Fils-Aime said, assessing Nintendo’s approach. “The end product, the thing that does matter, is the experience. And the best experiences always come when technology and game design are perfectly matched.” How well Nintendo manages to match its new entertainment platform with “Uprising” and everything else the third parties bring to it at launch should come into focus when the 3DS launches, but the development partners and intended scope of use should provide a wide range of opportunities heading into next year.
