Glasses Malone Refuses To Rely On Cash Money

‘I ain’t just trying to take advantage of somebody just because they hot right now,’ MC says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman Glasses Malone Photo: MTV News As an artist on Cash Money Records, Glasses Malone has access to some major hitmakers. But the California MC is not quick to take advantage of his multiplatinum labelmates. Instead, Glasses — who just dropped his solo debut album, Beach Cruiser, in August — said he would rather build organic collaborations. “I have access to everybody. Just to me, our topics be so different,” Glasses told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during his visit to “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “Me and Birdman got a lot of songs, me and Wayne got a lot of songs, me and Mack 10 have a lot of songs because our content are more relatable. Drake is really successful, and as an artist, it seems every artist wants to get with somebody that’s successful, but I don’t look at hip-hop like that. “I ain’t just trying to take advantage of somebody just because they hot right now,” he continued. “I want to make great music, I want to make great songs, and right now, me and Drake’s subject matter is so far apart: His subject matters tend to deal with more relationships, his success and dealing with his fame in the music industry.” Glasses, on the other hand, makes music that addresses the issues on the California streets where he was raised. On Beach Cruiser, he recruited the likes of Rick Ross, Jay Rock and Nipsey Hussle, instead of more-certified hitmakers such as Drake and Nicki Minaj. Malone refuses to get caught up in gossip. When he first emerged on the rap scene, it was Game who gave him the co-sign, but eventually their deal soured. Malone made it clear on “RapFix Live” that he harbors no ill will toward the Compton MC. “I don’t think it’s much of a rivalry; I think everybody painted it like that,” Glasses said. “It could never be a rivalry: Dude put me in position, him and [his brother] Fase put me in position to be where I am today,” he explained. “I don’t got nothing to say bad about that dude or nothing about that situation because without them … I’d still be slinging PCP on 117th.” Who would you like to hear Glasses collaborate with? Tyga Encourages West Coast MCs To Be ‘More Worldly’

Young Money rapper, who was born in California, visits ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Tyga Photo: MTV News This week, MTV is celebrating the “New West” by spotlighting California-bred artists like Odd Future, Nipsey Hussle, Dom Kennedy, Casey Veggies and, of course, this week’s “RapFix Live” guest Tyga. Sitting with MTV News’ Sway Calloway, Tyga commented on L.A.’s new sound, remarking that the new crop of Cali spitters fair better when employing a more-universal sound. It’s this attitude that Tyga said has helped rookie West Coast rappers make their mark in a post-gangsta-rap era. “I don’t think it’s that hard to break out of L.A. because there are a lot of new artists out,” he said. While the West Coast was traditionally associated with N.W.A. and Dr. Dre’s signature sound, things have been changing over the past few years. “Back in the day, when you had N.W.A., that was the sound for music, and a lot of L.A. artists sound like they’re from L.A. when they rap and stuff, and a lot of people around the world won’t relate as much,” said Tyga, who is currently signed to Lil Wayne’s Young Money label. “Odd Future, for example: [The group’s frontman] Tyler don’t sound like he from L.A., so he can get out to more people and his music can be more worldly because it’s a new sound.” Do you agree with Tyga about L.A.’s sound? Sound off in the comments below! Stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, the next wave of hip-hop acts helping to restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta-rap era. Keep it locked here all week for more on the West Coast up-and-comers! Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Tyga

Nipsey Hussle Ready To ‘Bounce Back Harder’ With The Marathon

New West hustler leads Mixtape Daily through his latest tape. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Steven Roberts Nipsey Hussle Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily Main Pick Street King : Nipsey Hussle Holding It Down For : Los Angeles Mixtape : The Marathon Real Spit : Nipsey Hussle’s career has been more stop-and-go than L.A. traffic, but the rapper is far from discouraged. After building a sizable buzz that landed him a record deal with Epic, a shoe deal with Pony, co-signs from the Game and Snoop, and acting credits in flicks with Vivica A. Fox and Ving Rhames, Nipsey still hasn’t dropped his major-label debut, South Central State of Mind. No worries: The lanky hip-hop prospect is still delivering heat with his latest mixtape, The Marathon. ” The Marathon concept is just me stepping outside of the situation and assessing it,” Nipsey told Mixtape Daily. “A lot of times, you go through a situation where you didn’t get what you expected out of it, and it’ll get you down, but when it come to us, we done been through this a million times. We done had it, took losses and bounced back harder. And that’s part of the game: bouncing back off your loss, if you would even consider this a loss.” As MTV News continues its New West Week coverage, it’s only right that Nipsey’s name be affiliated with Cali’s rap resurgence. No matter what label Nip eventually chooses to hustle with — he recently left the Epic fold — bank on the “Feelin’ Myself” rapper to keep winning. Joints to Check For

Jake Gyllenhaal Recalls ‘Debate’ On ‘Source Code’ Set

‘We thought all the time, and that’s what made it so fun,’ he tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Jake Gyllenhaal Photo: MTV News For the skeptical filmgoers out there who love to naysay Hollywood plot twists and turns, the stars and director of “Source Code” want you to know that they’ve already taken any questions and concerns you might have about the story into consideration. The film revolves around Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) on a mission to solve the mystery behind a devastating bombing, via Source Code technology — venturing into the mind of one of the passengers on the train, eight minutes before his death. While director Duncan Jones told MTV News recently that the film requires a “leap of faith,” actor Jake Gyllenhaal promises that any questions you may have were already debated during production. “The entire movie was a debate and the entire movie was also having to ask all the questions that the audience might be asking,” Gyllenhaal revealed. “Which is why I find it so successful that when you watch the movie, you can ask whatever question and think you know the answer, and we’ve already asked it or answered it,” he said, adding that the audience is constantly surprised. “Even if you’ve found out who the bomber is halfway through the movie, you don’t really know what’s going to happen.” Gyllenhaal went on to say that everything came together perfectly in order to execute the story in the most entertaining and interesting way possible. “It’s brilliantly written, it’s very clearly and brilliantly directed, which is so hard with a sci-fi movie and also at the heart of it is a character [for whom] we created a backstory that we thought a lot about,” he explained. “Each piece of his action is connected to what he does and why he does it and his own fate. I think, overall, we thought all the time, and that’s what made it so fun.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Source Code.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Snoop Dogg Blesses YG’s Take On Chronic Classic

Rap vet talks to Mixtape Daily about YG’s Just Re’d Up Dr. Dre cover, featuring Nipsey Hussle and Tyga. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts YG Photo: MTV News Cornerstone Credentials: Dr. Dre (by way of Snoop Dogg and YG) Snoop Dogg once rapped, “It ain’t no fun if the homeys can’t have none,” and now that he’s achieved veteran status, he’s more than willing to bless the younger set. Newly minted XXL “Freshman 11” cover star YG recruited fellow Los Angeles upstarts Nipsey Hussle and Tyga for a remake of the Snoop-powered “Bitches Ain’t Sh–” from Dr. Dre’s classic offering The Chronic . The song is set to appear on YG’s forthcoming mixtape, Just Re’d Up , and Snoop gave the re-up of his and Dre’s track a thumbs up. “He let me hear it when we were onstage,” Snoop told Mixtape Daily . “And I love the younger generation. They don’t have to ask me or check in with me or none of that. If you want to use any of my music or any of my material or any of my lines — that goes for young, old, new, whoever — feel free. That’s what hip-hop is about: spreading love and sharing love. I never been one to say, ‘Well, he stole my lines; he took this from me.’ It’s all a part of hip-hop. It’s a culture we all share and love. If you want to get something from me or taking something from me as my young homey, you got permission. This is Big Snoop Dogg, you know I love the hip-hop game. YG, you know what it do; do your thing.” YG said when he was growing up, he watched Snoop, Ice Cube and others on the Left Coast put on for their city, and it’s something he wants to do being a part of the next generation. “I want to do the same thing when we start poppin’,” he explained. “So, I’ll be like, ‘Nip, you gotta mess with me. Tyga, you got to do some West Coast sh–.’ And it gets done. I’m just bringing us all together. We all do our thing, but I make it to where we do our own stuff but we can get it poppin’ together. So the city will know we’re f—ing with each other, and it’s all good. I’m really trying to bring back this whole West Coast on another level — some young fly sh–.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Slim Thug Balances H-Town And Mainstream In Tha Thug Show

‘I think I did a good job of mixing it up,’ the Houston rapper says of his latest album. By Jayson Rodriguez Slim Thug Photo: MTV News Slim Thug thinks he might have veered too far left on his debut album, 2005’s Already Platinum. And the follow up, last year’s Boss of All Bosses might have shot off to the right a bit too much. But for his latest salvo, Tha Thug Show, released this week, the Texas titan said he hit right on the mark. “My aim for this album was to give the fans the Already Platinum feel and my second album and even it out,” he told MTV News. “The response I’ve been getting has been good. But my first album was kind of mainstream with all the Pharrell stuff, but the people of Houston felt like they didn’t get enough of the old Slim Thug. And then on Boss of All Bosses, I gave them nothing but H-Town. [ Laughs. ] But on this one, I wanted to give them half and half, and I think I did a good job of mixing it up.” The project features collaborations with B.o.B (“So High”), Yo Gotti, Nipsey Hussle, Big K.R.I.T. and Rick Ross. Ross and Slim Thug were involved in a minor dispute over the summer via Twitter over their shared nickname, “Boss,” and a dated Ross record that leaked. But the pair patched things up and released “Paid the Coast” as a sign of solidarity between the rappers. “For a record to surface and me being a little slow on Twitter, I didn’t really peep it until two days later,” Ross told MTV News at the time. “When I found out about it and heard about it, they said I’m dissing Slim Thug. ” ‘What’s the name of the record? “King Boss”?’ ” he remembered asking. “I never had a record called ‘King Boss.’ I just left it alone. After the fact, [Slim] asked me about it. I told the homie, ‘Of course it ain’t nothing but love between me and you, big dawg.’ We got in the studio later that night. The night we spoke. I e-mailed him something; shot him something, did something for his album. It’s fire. Then I leaked ‘Paid the Cost,’ just to show the haters.” Related Artists Slim Thug

Travis Barker, Diddy, Lil Wayne, Birdman and more appear on tape dropping Monday. By Shaheem Reid The Game’s The Red Room Photo: Universal Music Group The Game’s anticipated The Red Room mixtape comes out on Monday (April 26). Though it was originally slated to be a special Gangsta Grillz edition mixtape with DJ Drama, Game made an 11th-hour switch and went back to his playa potna DJ Skee, who has been a part of several Game mixtapes over the years. Skee contributed production to the mixtape as well, making a “Skeemix” of the Compton native’s controversial “400 Bars.” Travis Barker lends his drums to a remix of the Cool and Dre-produced “Shake.” Game has no shortage of fire power elsewhere in the mixtape. Diddy appears on “Heartbreak Hotel,” and Nipsey Hussle raps on the freestyle “Ha Ha,” which uses Fat Joe’s “Slow Down” beat. Eazy-E Remembered By The Game, Nipsey Hussle, Scoop DeVille

‘He is the original blueprint for West Coast gangsta rap,’ Jay Rock says on the 15th anniversary of Eazy’s death. By Shaheem Reid Eazy E Photo: Ruthless Records Friday (March 26) marks the 15th anniversary of Eric “Eazy-E” Wright ‘s death from AIDS complications. The N.W.A founder was a musical pioneer — not just for bringing gangsta rap to the mainstream, but because of how he revolutionized the business side of the game as well. He mastered self-promotion and pushed records independently with little-to-no airplay. Eazy’s legacy speaks for itself, and his impact still resonates. Some of the younger L.A. acts wrote in to MTV News to talk about Eazy’s influence. “Eazy-E was the pioneer and ambassador of L.A.’s street culture in hip-hop,” Nipsey Hussle said. “He embodied the mind state and attitude of a young man coming of age in urban Los Angeles.” “Eazy-E started this gangsta sh–,” Jay Rock proclaimed. “He took it to a whole new level. If it wasn’t for him, it wouldn’t be no Ice Cube, no Snoop, no Game or no Jay Rock. He is the original blueprint for West Coast gangsta rap.” The Game’s love for Eazy-E is well-documented. The Compton, California, native has a picture of Eazy and N.W.A tattooed on his body. Game’s message about Eazy was short and sweet: “Replacing Eazy is Eazy-er said than done.” Earlier this week, producer Scoop DeVille sat in an LA studio with his father, Kid Frost, and remembered talking to Eazy. “Eazy would call the house and say, ‘Tell your pop Eric called,’ ” Scoop recalled. Frost signed to Ruthless Records in the mid-1990s, and shortly before Wright died, Kid was supposed to head the newly started Latin division of the label. “I can say that dude had a big heart and love for the whole movement of the West Coast sound of gangsta rap,” Frost declared. “He definitely was the godfather of gangsta rap. There’s still not a lot of records I hear to this day that can hold water to what he was doing with Dr. Dre, like Straight Outta Compton. I’ll always be part of the Ruthless family. I’ll always be the first Mexican that got signed to Ruthless Records.” “Eazy was a real dude,” Scoop added. “He was a businessman and a street dude. He has everyone’s respect to this day.” How has Eazy-E’s music impacted your life? Share your memories the comments section below. Related Photos N.W.A. Nicki Minaj Explains Why She Skipped XXL’s Freshmen 10

‘With all due respect, we felt like we kinda had graduated from the freshman class,’ MC says of her and Drake’s exclusion from the issue. By Shaheem Reid Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj said she told XXL magazine, “No disrespect, but no thanks.” The sexy rapper declined the invitation to be a part of the 2010 Freshmen 10 issue because, like her Young Money compatriot Drake , she felt she should have been down last year. ” Drake and I, we love XXL, ” she told us recently on the set of her video for “Massive Attack.” “We just shot for XXL. With all due respect, we felt like we kinda had graduated from the freshman class. We felt that XXL missed the mark when they didn’t put us on the cover prior to that. They have to pay for that. They can’t say, ‘Hey, get on the next one.’ But we love XXL. That’s like a hip-hop classic. So we said, ‘can we have something just a little bit more catered to us, so that we feel like have still grown as artists, so we’re not at all disrespecting the magazine?’ They were cool with that. “We didn’t dictate, we just asked nicely,” Nicki smiled. “Technically, we were freshmen when they didn’t put us on,” Drake told ImFLashy.com in February. “I feel now it’s just returning the favor.” Earlier this month, the publication revealed their Freshmen 10 . The roster consisted of OJ Da Juiceman, Nipsey Hussle, Jay Rock, Pill, Donnis, Fashawn, J. Cole, Wiz Khalifah, Freddie Gibbs and Big Sean. Related Artists Nicki Minaj Drake
