Pitbull Brings Miami’s Most Beautiful To The VMAs

Miami MC says the dancers in his performance on Sunday night will ‘create Pandora’s box.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Pitbull rehearses for his 2011 VMA performance Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Pitbull gets pretty demanding on his hit “Give Me Everything,” , but for his 2011 VMA performance, Mr. 305 looks to turn the tables and offer fans a taste of Miami. “I did get the most beautiful women from Miami to come over and create Pandora’s box,” Pit told MTV News. “So if you’re bringing your wife, your girlfriend, boyfriend to the show, you might lose ’em.” MTV News was present at Mr. Worldwide’s VMA rehearsal on Thursday at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, and the rapper comes through as promised. Pit and collaborators Ne-Yo and Nayer ran through their number, flanked by approximately 60 curvaceous female dancers. “We have some backup dancers: one or two or 60,” Ne-Yo teased . “And two of the best-dressed men in the business. What more can you ask for?” Lindsay Lohan’s lawsuit hasn’t dampened Pit’s party plans. The troubled actresses filed suit against the Cuban pop sensation, claiming that his lyrics on “Give Me Everything” were defamatory. But during the run-through, Mr. 305 didn’t bite his tongue as he freely rapped the line in question without censoring himself. “I got it locked like Lindsay Lohan,” Pit spit. On Thursday, Pit addressed the suit in a video on his Planet Pit website, inviting La Lohan to join him at the VMAs . “We’ll be performing [‘Give Me Everything”] at the VMAs and, as a matter of fact, I’d like to send out an invitation to Lindsay Lohan,” Pitbull said. “Hopefully she can come with me to the VMAs, and we can figure this out.” According to TMZ , however, the actress has declined. Still, Pit’s offer stands. “I said it, I meant it, and if she takes it, great. If she doesn’t, cool. But she will have her tickets at will call,” he told MTV News. In the meantime, the show goes on, and if the bilingual hit-maker’s practice run is any indication, Pit plans to leave everything he’s got on the stage, proving that it’s better to give than receive. Carter, with reporting by Christina Garibaldi Britney Spears performs at the 2001 VMAs Photo: Getty Images Fans are eagerly anticipating the Britney Spears tribute at Sunday’s Video Music Awards — and you can count Sabi among those die-hards. Spears’ Femme Fatale Tour opening act and “(Drop Dead) Beautiful” collaborator said it’s definitely fitting that Spears will be feted at the awards show. “I think it’s awesome,” the singer/songwriter told MTV News. “I personally have been able to watch firsthand how she’s worked her butt off. She’s been in the game for a minute. She’s an icon. It’s well overdue.” Go behind the scenes as Britney films her 2011 VMA promo. So what Spears songs would Sabi like to see in the tribute? Her picks: “I’m Slave 4 U,” “Toxic” and Brit’s breakout hit, ” … Baby One More Time.” “She has so many catchy, great records,” she added. As for Spears herself, she told MTV News that her favorite VMA memory was that infamous lip-lock with Madonna back in 2003. “My greatest experience — probably being with Madonna,” she told MTV News. “The kiss was amazing. … Being onstage with someone of that caliber is just iconic.” Spears is up for two Moonmen at the 2011 VMAs, including Best Pop Video and Best Choreography. Sabi will get her first taste of the VMAs when she performs the dance hit “You Make Me Feel … ” with Cobra Starship during the VMA Pre-Show . “I always say this: Like, someone needs to pinch me,” Sabi said of performing as part of the show. “Just know that the guys and the one girl, we’ve all performed a bunch of times with each other and just know that this is going to be different than anything I’ve ever done.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Curren$y Recruits DJ Drama For Verde Terrace

‘There are some people that listen to Drama that have never listened to any of my music,’ Curren$y tells Mixtape Daily . By Rob Markman Curren$y Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ WireImage Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : Verde Terrace Headliner : Curren$y and DJ Drama Standout Track : “Pininfarina” Real Spit : “At this point in my life, I’m looking at it like a hustle.” These are Curren$y ‘s opening bars on his DJ Drama -helmed Verde Terrace mixtape, and the line is far more than the usual rapper rhetoric. After cutting his teeth as part of both Master P’s No Limit Records roster and the Cash Money crew, New Orleans native Curren$y branched out on his own, independently releasing a series of eight solo tapes from 2007 to 2008. While he did hook up with former Roc-A-Fella co-founder Damon Dash to release his 2010 albums, Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk II, Spitta has navigated the past few years of his career without a co-sign. Still, the jet-loving MC saw the value in partnering up with mixtape king DJ Drama for Verde Terrace , which he released Tuesday (August 23). “There are some people that listen to Drama that have never listened to any of my music,” Curren$y told Mixtape Daily . “Some people are just getting hip to it now because they’re like, ‘If Drama f—in’ with it, I’mma have to give it a chance.’ ” On Verde, Curren$y rhymes over a mixture of original productions and tries his hand at other artist’s instrumentals. OutKast’s “Elevators” gets turned into “Smoke Sum’n,” and Jay-Z’s “Stick 2 the Script” is transformed as “Ways to Kill Em.” At the moment, Curren$y tells Mixtape Daily his favorite track is “Pininfarina,” a lyrical affair over Maybach Music Group’s “Pandemonium” beat. With that, Curren$y and his Jets crew add to his ever-growing discography of mixtapes. Jets, where haven’t they done yet? Bruno Mars’ VMA Promo: Go Behind The Scenes!

Mars, who is performing at Sunday’s show, throws an old-school house party in the clip. By Jocelyn Vena Bruno Mars in his 2011 VMA promo Photo: MTV In Bruno Mars ‘ VMA promo, he hangs out with some fresh-looking hipsters while spinning tunes from folks like Ginuwine and Michael Jackson. The clip captures the joie de vivre of a good old-fashioned house party attended by fashionable folks who love to dance. “I think what you’re going to see is a little of my personality, a lot of my influences and a lot of people having a good time,” he told MTV News on the set. “I think that this year’s VMAs is a celebration and a party, and MTV did a great job of putting this commercial together.” In between takes, the party never stopped. Extras and dancers milled around, grooving to the tunes blasting throughout the NYC soundstage. Bruno chilled with everyone, making small talk with his fellow partygoers when the cameras weren’t rolling. The commercial itself is chockfull of great tunes, and when Mars was shooting the promo, he displayed his skills on the piano. So what tunes make Bruno Mars’ party set list? “This is my party; I’m DJing. I’m playing music that I grew up listening to,” he said. “I grew up listening to oldies, and so every time I hear, like, Little Richard or James Brown, the Police, it does something to me. It gets me in the party mood, and I’m just hoping to bring it to this party.” Not only is he set to perform at the VMAs — airing live Sunday at 9 p.m. from L.A. — he’s up for four Moonmen, including Video of the Year , Best Male Video and Best Pop Video for “Grenade.” “I grew up watching VMAs. I know every performance,” Mars said. “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching MTV VMAs, and when we got the phone call saying that my video was up for Video of the Year — that’s the big-boy award.” Mars would be tickled to win Best Choreography for his feel-good track “The Lazy Song.” “You know what I’m excited for?” he said. “As much as I put blood, sweat and tears into ‘Grenade,’ I’m excited for ‘The Lazy Song,’ Best Choreography.” The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Justin Bieber Fans Nearly Crush Chelsea Handler, In ‘VMAs Revealed’

Learn how an army of Beliebers almost mauled the 2010 VMA host on ‘VMAs Revealed,’ airing Saturday at noon ET on MTV. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage It seems that Justin Bieber can’t so much as step outside without inciting a riot of considerable magnitude, so it was to be expected that his performance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — supposedly a secret song-and-dance routine set outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles — would probably attract some attention. But VMA producers had no idea just how out-of-hand things would get — or how close VMA host Chelsea Handler would be to being mauled by Justin’s army of Beliebers as a result. It was all thanks to one harmless tweet by JB himself, as we learn in “VMAs Revealed,” a new behind-the-scenes special set to air this Saturday at noon ET on MTV. It all started before the VMAs, during Bieber’s rehearsals. Producers planned to have Handler exit the theater and take a spot at the front of the stage, holding a sign that read “Chelsea hearts Justin.” Everything was going swimmingly until an army of Bieber fanatics got wind of things. “Out on the Nokia Plaza, they were rehearsing Justin Bieber’s performance,” MTV News VP Ryan Kroft explains in “Revealed.” “[And] if you sort of stopped and paid attention, out comes Chelsea Handler in curlers.” Of course, on the night of the big show — after Bieber had tweeted about “free tickets to [his] VMA performance” — things changed. The Nokia Plaza was positively packed with screaming Bieber fans, who didn’t take kindly to Handler’s intrusion — and they let her know by crowding up against a barricade, nearly crushing her and sending all plans out the window. Producers never quite got a good shot of Handler and her sign — “I think you can see her sign bobbing around, you just can’t see her head. She should’ve worn the curlers,” Kroft said — but luckily, she escaped serious bodily harm. And the true Beliebers ended up being happy too: Not only did they get to see a once-in-a-lifetime performance from their idol, but Bieber would go on to win the VMA for Best New Artist later that night.
