Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Is ‘Infectious,’ Brian Wilson Says

‘I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag,’ the Beach Boys’ co-founder says. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in her music video for “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Records In 1965, the Beach Boys released “California Girls,” a song that would not only become one of their biggest hits, but one of the most influential rock tunes of all time too. Forty-five years later, Katy Perry dropped “California Gurls,” a song that has quickly become one of her biggest hits , but still has a ways to go in the legacy department. It may very well be on its way — at least according to legendary Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson, who, along with Mike Love, wrote the original “Girls” back in the day. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times ‘ Pop & Hiss blog , he admitted to being a fan of the song — and a little bit flattered by Perry’s updated homage. “I love her vocal. … She sounds very clear and energetic,” he said in a statement issued by his manager. “The melody is infectious, and I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag. I wish them well with this cut.” Of course, as Pop & Hiss points out, Perry and Snoop probably don’t need Wilson’s well-wishes (though they no doubt appreciate them). After all, “Gurls” is currently spending its sixth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart — it also tops the brand-new Songs of the Summer chart too — and has already sold more than 2.6 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. So far, Perry has remained mum on Wilson’s praise (she’s basically been tweeting about “Inception” nonstop), and a spokesperson for her label, Capitol, did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. Make your pick: “California Girls” or “California Gurls”? Sound off in the comments! Related Artists Katy Perry

‘Eclipse’ Fans Camp Out For Days Before L.A. Premiere

Twilighters make new friends outside the Nokia Theatre as they wait for Thursday’s red-carpet premiere. By Joel Hanek, with reporting by James Lacsina “Twilight” fans at the “Eclipse” premiere Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images While the werewolf-vampire cold war wages on, the armies of Team Edward and Team Jacob have temporarily set aside their differences to come together to celebrate one momentous occasion: the premiere of “Eclipse”! Earlier this week, Twilighters began camping out in the California sun outside of the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles where the third “Twilight” installment will premiere this Thursday. “We’ve been here for three days, and we are braving the sun, which is kind of evil,” Cherylyn from Littlerock, California, told MTV News on Tuesday. (Those of you not camping out can still get a great view of the red-carpet action when MTV News live-streams the premiere Thursday at 9:30 p.m. ET.) One Twilighter admitted that things got off to a rough start, as everyone jockeyed for position. “The first day, the vibe was very negative,” Jaylyn Sachette said. “Everybody was pushing and shoving and yelling at each other. But once we got wristbands and our spot in line, everything kind of chilled out, and now we’re all making friends.” But fans from all over the world were willing to tough it out, sleeping on the hard ground while being bombarded all night and day by ads from the surrounding Jumbotrons. “I flew all the way from Sweden to L.A. just to be here and support Kristen and Rob and ‘Eclipse,’ ” Sara Mendoza said. Though they’re excited for the movie, many are holding out hope that they’ll get a glimpse of their favorite stars on the red carpet. “We’re going to try and get autographs,” Sarah Freas said. “I would love to talk to them, be like, ‘We love you!’ ” Her friend Ben Williams agreed. “Yeah, just get autographs, basically. [Getting] a picture would be cool, but I don’t think we’ll be close enough.” And although the Twi-hards have been obsessing over the chance to meet their idols for days, many confessed they might get too overwhelmed to speak if they actually got the chance. “If I saw Edward, or Robert,” said fan Molly Jank, as she held a life-size cutout of RPattz, “I would cry. Then I would make him sign something, and then I would tell him that I would see him later because I’m marrying him.” What would you say to your favorite “Twilight” stars if you met them? Talk about it in the comments. We’ll be

Ian Benardo Crashes ‘American Idol’ Finale Stage

‘This is a Kanye moment,’ former ‘Idol’ hopeful declares during Simon Cowell farewell segment. By Josh Wigler Photo: Fox No matter who walks away with the coveted “American Idol” crown, somebody will exit disappointed. But neither Crystal Bowersox nor Lee DeWyze will leave the Nokia Theatre as the most surprised person in the auditorium. That’s a distinction that undoubtedly falls on Simon Cowell after onetime “Idol” hopeful Ian Benardo stormed the stage and, in his own words, pulled a Kanye West by ripping into the outgoing judge. At the end of an original musical number titled “Simon Said,” performed by comedian Dane Cook, a plethora of contestants formerly burned by the brutally honest Cowell flocked to the stage to join Cook’s derisive song. But the microphone was quickly hogged by Benardo, who was famously rejected by Cowell during a New York City “American Idol” audition in 2007. “Who cares? It’s all about Ian Benardo tonight!” the stage-crashing Benardo announced to a packed crowd. “I’m going to replace you, Simon Cowell! No one has a thing to say about you — just me. This is a Kanye moment, and I’m … ” Benardo’s rant was swiftly interrupted by another of Cowell’s many victims, Tatiana Del Toro, but the self-proclaimed Kanye imitator resumed his place in the spotlight with little trouble. “Nobody cares about you,” he told Del Toro. “It’s all about Ian Benardo, and I want to say I’m replacing you, Simon Cowell, because I’m more entertaining!” According to MTV News’ “Idol” expert, Jim Cantiello, who is backstage at the finale, the “Simon Said” performance was supposed to feature all the formerly burned contestants getting their retribution against Cowell. Unfortunately for them, Benardo’s tirade forced “Idol” producers to end the segment early. But with an hour remaining in the finale, it’s a sure bet that others close to the show will get their last licks in on Cowell before the night is through. What did you think of Ian’s stage crash?
