Labeling Contrast: Glenn Beck = ‘Controversial Conservative;’ Al Sharpton = ‘Civil Rights Leader’

Just like NBC and ABC this morning, CBS’s The Early Show had a hostile take on Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally scheduled for Saturday on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Correspondent Whit Johnson labeled Beck a “controversial conservative,” event speaker Alveda King (a niece of Martin Luther King, Jr.) a “longtime advocate for conservative causes,” and suggested that the fact that some attendees “will get there on Tea Party-sponsored buses” contradicted the idea that this would be a non-political event. Yet talking about liberal rabble rouser and onetime Democratic presidential candidate Al Sharpton, Johnson offered no ideological labels or even a tag that Sharpton might be “controversial.” Instead, Sharpton’s event was described as a rally “hosted by civil rights leaders,” and showcased his slam: “The things that Beck stands for are antithetical to the civil rights movement.” For good measure, Johnson brought in a second Beck critic, Daily Beast writer and frequent CNN talking head John Avlon. “Where Martin Luther King was a uniter,” Avlon slammed, “Glenn Beck is a professional divider.” CBS’s labeling double-standard made it a clean sweep for the broadcast networks. In their Friday morning show coverage, as documented by NewsBusters’ Geoff Dickens and Scott Whitlock, NBC and ABC also refrained from labeling Sharpton as a liberal (NBC called him an “activist,” while ABC offered no description), while both assigned the “conservative” label to Beck (ABC: “conservative talk show host;” NBC: “conservative host”). Here’s how The Early Show covered the topic during their 8am ET news segment: NEWS ANCHOR JEFF GLOR: TV and radio host Glenn Beck is hosting a rally in Washington tomorrow, and it’s taking place on the same day as the 47th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s historic “I Have a Dream” speech. CBS News correspondent Whit Johnson is in Washington this morning with the latest on that. Whit, good morning. WHIT JOHNSON: Jeff, good morning. Well, one rally will be hosted by civil rights leaders, one by controversial conservative talk show host Glenn Beck. But Beck insists the scheduling of his event — on the very same day — is nothing more than a coincidence. CLIP OF GLENN BECK: This is a historic event- JOHNSON: Glenn Beck’s “Restore Honor” rally Saturday will take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, the same place where 250,000 people watched Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in 1963. CLIP OF MLK: And I have a dream today   JOHNSON: The Fox News personality’s event will be a highly-publicized tribute to America’s troops. Sarah Palin will be one of the keynote speakers, along with MLK’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, a longtime advocate for conservative causes. DR. ALVEDA KING: We need unity. We have to rebuild America, and we’re gonna have to have unity to do it. JOHNSON: Beck maintains his rally is non-political, but many of the thousands expected to be in attendance will get there on Tea Party-sponsored buses. And the event’s timing has touched a nerve: The Rev. Al Sharpton, who will lead a separate march the same day, criticized Beck, saying [words on screen] “the things that Beck stands for are antithetical to the civil rights movement.” JOHN AVLON, THE DAILY BEAST: He uses the classic tools in the talk radio arsenal: conflict, tension, fear and resentment. Where Martin Luther King was a uniter at the end of the day, Glenn Beck is a professional divider. JOHNSON: Beck’s rally is expected to be much larger than Sharpton’s — he says maybe tens of thousands of people. It’s possible both events and counterdemonstrations could cross paths tomorrow on the National Mall. Jeff. GLOR: Alright, Whit Johnson in Washington. Whit, thank you very much.

Ke$ha Says She May Go Country ‘One Day’

‘My mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton,’ the Nashville-born pop singer reveals to MTV News. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: MTV News Last month, Ke$ha made headlines ( as she is wont to do these days) when she told Paper magazine that she was considering a move to country music , saying she was “really inspired” by the songs of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. On one hand, it did sort of make sense … after all, Ke$ha is from Nashville, and her mom wrote songs for some of the greatest country singers of all time. But on the other, you know, it’s Ke$ha. So, when MTV News caught up with her backstage at the Casio “Shock the World” party on Monday night, we decided to ask her about her future plans, and whether they included a countrified makeover. “I do love country music … [so] one day maybe, who knows. I don’t think I’ll stop singing until I’m dead,” she said. “I’m from Nashville and my mom wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Merle Haggard and I just love old-school country music, especially. I relate to it. And I also really like how most country songs tell a story, there’s a lot of storytelling and honesty involved, so I’ve taken a lot of my writing tips from country music … I mean, I’m definitely not done being a rowdy f—ing crazy bitch, but when I’m done doing that, who knows?” And, the way she sees it, the songs she wrote for her Animal album aren’t really all that far from country to begin with. At least when it comes to the whole “honesty” part of things. “The whole record is painfully, brutally honest,” she said. “Like talking about my ex-boyfriend, how he cheated on me. Idiot.” Should Ke$ha go country? Tell us what you think in the comments! The deal with Sony produced hits for Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, but Billboard.com reports that the chart-topping success for those two acts hasn’t been matched. Reuters reports that the deal is for a minimum of three years. “With ‘Idol’ celebrating our 10th season, I wanted to inject some new power and weight behind our brand,” Fuller said in a statement. “We have been quietly delivering hits relentlessly for nine seasons, and Lucian Grainge and [Interscope Geffen A&M chairman] Jimmy Iovine’s ambition, commitment and determination to push the boundaries and go even further with ‘Idol’ was very compelling. Can an All-Glass Office Building Really Be Considered Green?

the good: 1 Bryant Park. Image: Viridian Realty For decades, modern office buildings have been pretty much covered in glass curtain walls. Some are high performance and very expensive, like the super-green LEED Platinum Bank of America Building at 1 Bryant Park in New York, or they can be the standard crappy suburban office building thrown up across North America, looking the same in California or Calgary. But as Steve Mouzon points out , even the very best glazing has an R-value that is equiv… Read the full story on TreeHugger

What Do Woolly Mammoths and Whales Have in Common?

Image credit: Wikimedia Commons 15,000 years ago the ecosystems of North America suffered a dramatic disruption . Within 5,000 years, dozens of Pleistocene species—including herbivors like mammoths, mastodons, ground sloths, and camels, and predators like lions, dire wolves, and two species of saber-toothed cats—went extinct. In all, two-thirds of the continent’s large mammals were lost during this period. And the disruption has direct analogs to shifts occurring in North America today…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Eclipse’ Sets Box-Office Record For Midnight Screenings

More than $30 million gross tops previous record-holder ‘New Moon.’ By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit In knowing the fervor and devotion of “Twilight” fans, it should come as no surprise that ticket sales for “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” have broken the record for highest-grossing midnight screenings — previously held by “New Moon.” According to the film’s distributor, Summit Entertainment, “Eclipse” took in more than $30 million from midnight screenings on Wednesday (June 30), with final box-office numbers to be determined once the studio finishes its final count. The previous record for midnight showings is $26.3 million, set on the opening day for “New Moon” last November. “Eclipse” will have to break $72.7 million to beat its predecessor in the all-time opening-day-gross category, but given the strong numbers Wednesday, and the fact that “Moon” opened on a Friday, not midweek, it is fair to say the third chapter in the hugely popular film franchise is on track to rake in serious dough throughout its opening weekend. “Eclipse” ranks as the widest domestic release in history , opening in 4,416 theaters in North America, beating the record set earlier this year by “Iron Man 2.” Four-thousand of those theaters held midnight screenings. Several theater chains also reportedly had 3 a.m. screenings to meet public demand. IMAX was expected to hold 3 a.m. screenings in 120 of its theaters. In addition to being on par to break the “New Moon” opening-day and midnight-screening records, “Eclipse” has a shot at besting the record for a movie opening over the Fourth of July weekend. That record is currently at $200 million, set by last year’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Russell Brand Poses With Girls in Bikinis Like He’s Not a Queer of the Day

I know it’s pretty fucking obvious and maybe even boring to say that Russell Brand is a queer, because everyone already knows he is and not because he wears tight pants, or because he makes out with his male costars every chance her gets, or even because of his weird dainty accent and way he speaks, but because he’s engaged to Katy Perry, a disgusting pig of a woman I know that anyone hetero wouldn’t get down with unless they were black, but that a queer would pretend to the public that he is getting down with her, because it makes the most sense for both their careers….I know that Russell Brand pretended to be a drug addict and wrote a fake book and lived his lie that led him to North America, so pullin’ stunts like pretending is easy for him….but I guess as long as he gets trash half naked in their bikinis, he’s the kind of homo I don’t mind getting behind….but as soon the bikini-clad bitches disappear…I got no choice but to go back hating on this useless unfunny motherfucker……and I guess the post of this post is to say I dig cheap marketing strategies…cuz bitches in bikinis always get my attention….good job you fucking geniuses. Eminem Says He Felt Like ‘Bugs Bunny’ In Rehab

‘I couldn’t concentrate on my problem,’ he says of getting attention from fellow patients. By Mawuse Ziegbe Eminem Photo: Getty Images Before Eminem even dropped Relapse last year, he announced plans release a follow-up called Relapse 2 — and then he totally changed his mind . Instead, come June 21, fans will be able to pick up Em’s new album Recovery (which was moved up a day after it leaked online ). Eminem recently explained the meaning behind the album title in an interview with The New York Times, revealing that it is a direct reference to managing his ongoing battle with prescription drugs. “Vicodin, Valium and Ambien and, toward the end, which caused my overdose, methadone,” Eminem told the Times when asked what he was recovering from. “I didn’t know it was methadone. I used to get pills wherever I could. I was just taking anything that anybody was giving to me.” The hip-hop superstar also opened up about his stint in rehab. “The first time I went, it was in Brighton, Michigan,” he said “The second time, I didn’t go to rehab; I just went to a regular hospital. I detoxed in the hospital, and then I came home.” Coping with addiction is a demanding process, but due to his celebrity, Em had to deal with a unique set of challenges. The always candid MC said that he later chose to detox in a hospital because his outsize stardom affected the way his fellow addicts in rehab interacted with Em. “I couldn’t go back to rehab. I felt like I was Bugs Bunny in rehab,” Eminem said. “When Bugs Bunny walks into rehab, people are going to turn and look. People at rehab were stealing my hats and pens and notebooks and asking for autographs. I couldn’t concentrate on my problem.” Did you prefer the Relapse 2 album title, or are you happy Em opted for Recovery instead? Let us know in the comments. Drake’s Family Tree Extends From Childhood Pals To Kanye West

Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Bun B and many others are also influential in Drizzy’s hip-hop journey. By MTV News staff Hip-hop phenom Drake might only be 23 years old, but his roots in the rap world run quite deep. His debut album, Thank Me Later (which dropped this week) is the result of years of studying with a handful of masters, toiling in the mixtape circuit and traveling across North America in an effort to synthesize his unique style and build his credibility. But who is connected to the man born Aubrey Graham? As you can see in his hip-hop family tree , there are quite a few branches in Drake’s musical story. October’s Very Own (Drake’s personal crew) Noah “40” Shebib : Drake’s musical partner produced the bulk of Thank Me Later , and in the past, he served as the rapper’s road manager, engineer and lifeline as he ran up thousands of dollars on his credit card for the two to follow Lil Wayne on tour while they worked on So Far Gone. Oliver El-Khatib : Oliver functions as Drizzy’s creative director, weighing in on the majority of decisions in the lyricist’s career outside the recording booth. He posts to the OVO blog frequently, highlighting the tastes of the collective, from fashion to music. Oliver introduced Drake to the music of now tourmate Francis and the Lights. Niko : One of Drake’s longtime friends from Toronto, Niko introduced the rapper to his own barber when the former “Degrassi” star needed a fresh look. The two are often together, and in his Thank Me Later album credits, Drizzy tells his friend he thought he was an only child until he met Niko, whom he calls “my closest confidant.” Instrumental Allies (Kick-started Drake’s career) Jas Prince : The son of legendary Houston hip-hop pioneer J. Prince, the younger Jas found Drake on MySpace and urged Lil Wayne to listen to the upstart artist. Lil Wayne : The Cash Money Records superstar took Drake under his wing and offered the then-unknown rapper recording advice, telling his prot
