MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski Thinks Both Sides of Ambush Interview Acted Wrongly

Mika Brzezinski, the self-proclaimed Democrat and co-host of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” thinks the two men who tried an “ambush interview” of Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) acted wrongly, along with the congressman. In a video that surfaced online Monday, the Congressman was caught on camera grabbing a man by the wrist, swatting at his video camera, and demanding to know who he was. The man videotaped the congressman walking down a Washington, DC street, approaching him asking “Do you support the Obama agenda?”   “As a matter of respect to any human being, don’t stick a camera two inches away from their face,” Mika lectured to the show’s audience, assuming her best soapbox demeanor. “That’s rude. And a little bit threatening.” ‘There were two wrongs there,” she summarized the situation. Joe Scarborough, the show’s host, agreed with Time magazine political analyst Mark Halperin that the question posed to the congressman was a “trick question.” The panel did not doubt that the congressman acted wrongly in his intimidating behavior toward the two men with cameras. However, they seemed to view the two cameramen as little more than annoying street activists. The transcript of the segment, which aired on June 15, 8:25 a.m. EDT, is as follows: (Video of incident) JOE SCARBOROUGH: That was an Ali move, you grab him behind the neck and then pull him to you. And the question was–by the way, the question was this–do you support the Obama agenda? (Garble) MARK HALPERIN: Trick question. JOE SCARBOROUGH: That was a trick question. WILLIE GEIST: Congressman Bob Etheridge, Democrat of North Carolina, ambushed he would say, on the streets. He has apologized. He said he regrets it, he said ‘The truth is, I had a long day, but that’s no excuse.’ DAVID REMNICK: Yeah, we all have long days but don’t beat up high school kids. (Laughter) WILLIE GEIST: Didn’t he get to anchor on ‘Way to Early’ that morning? Now you know how I feel everyday. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I just don’t see this the same way. I’m not going to engage in another fight where you, um– WILLIE GEIST: No matter how annoying someone is, you don’t put your hands on them.   JOE SCARBOROUGH: We have a lot of people saying a lot of ugly things to us, and you don’t grab kids behind the neck– DAVID REMNICK: It’s better not to. It’s better not to. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I have seen you exhibit tremendous restraint in situations like this. JOE SCARBOROUGH: You just keep walking. That’s what mature adults do, they keep walking. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Also, by the way, as a matter of respect to any human being, don’t stick a camera two inches away from their face. That’s rude. And a little bit threatening. JOE SCARBOROUGH: You just keep walking. As Bono would say, ‘Walk on.’ MIKA BRZEZINSKI: So there were–there were two wrongs there.

One Dead, More Than 100 Arrested At Bonnaroo

29-year-old David Sloan appeared to die from heat exhaustion. By Gil Kaufman Fans at Bonnaroo on Sunday Photo: Jeff Gentner/ Getty Images A 29-year-old man, North Carolina’s David Sloan, died on Sunday (June 13) after falling ill at the Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tennessee. According to the Tullahoma News and Guardian , officials believe that Sloan was overcome by heat , which caused him to collapse early Sunday morning in front of medical personnel after his core body temperature reached 108 degrees. Sloane was rushed to an area hospital, where he later died. The Tennessean reported that, with temperatures in the low to mid-90s and a heat index over 100 degrees for much of the weekend, air-conditioned medical tents were treating about 25 percent more concertgoers than in years past. As of noon on Saturday, more than two dozen fans had been transported to area hospitals for heat-related emergencies or other injuries that couldn’t be treated on site. The festival, which featured sets from Jay-Z, the Dave Matthews Band, Stevie Wonder, Conan O’Brien, the Flaming Lips, Kings of Leon, Weezer and Kid Cudi — who jetted to the site just hours after his arrest for criminal mischief and possession of a controlled substance — also saw a fairly typical number of arrests. More than 50 people were arrested for drug-related charges and disorderly behavior, with local officials expecting the total citations to reach more than 200 by the end of the festival’s ninth year. Among the arrests, according to WBIR News, was a sting on wanted felon Sytanya Darren Fells , who was arrested for possession of “synthetic marijuana” during a traffic stop Friday night. Fells was in a camper traveling on on one of the congested highways into the festival when police pulled the vehicle over and found the driver, Larry Thurber, in possession of 38 Xanax pills and “Mojo,” a synthetic herbal incense that mimics the effects of pot. WSB reported that the local sheriff’s office had begun a crackdown on drugs in the days leading up to the event’s Thursday kickoff, issuing more than 100 citations for offenses ranging from possession of marijuana to underage possession of alcohol along the I-75 corridor leading to Manchester. More than 70 Bonnaroo-bound drivers were arrested before the music even started. Related Photos Performances At Bonnaroo 2010

Blackwater/Xe’s Weekend Warrior Bootcamp

For the vigilant patriot, Blackwater, rebranded as Xe Services, now offers classes in “Home Defense” at their 6,000-acre North Carolina and 80-acre northwest Illinois training locations. Xe’s training division goes by the name U.S. Training Center. According to the center’s website, the “Home Defense” course will make “armed citizen[s] more aware of personal security whether at home or away” as they go about their duty of “protecting self and family members.” On the company website, Tammy G. offered this testimonial, “While I hope I never have to put the skills into practice defending myself or my son, I feel like I now have the tools necessary to do that wisely and safely.” The two-day course, which is limited to 12 participants, has as a prerequisite “basic pistol marksmanship” and costs $400, not including room and board. Provided for this fee are a holster, a magazine carrier, 100 rounds of Simunition ammunition, safety gear to protect the wearer from head to groin, and a Simunition pistol—a Glock, Sig Sauer or Beretta, your choice. Further, it is “highly recommended” that students provide their own cover garment “for concealed draw.” Should you choose to enroll in the class, 25 percent of your time would be spent in classroom lectures and 75 percent with “practical instruction.” Topics explored include “use of force,” “force-on-force scenarios,” “away from home considerations,” “mindset/indications of mental state,” “basic room clearing techniques for the homeowner” and “dealing with police.” The course description concludes with this “disclaimer” (in bold): “Local authorities should be consulted on use of Lethal Force and the use of Lethal Force to defend lives and property.” In these uncertain times, the concerned citizen can’t be too careful. According to the company website, “The students will receive classroom instruction and will engage in shoot/no-shoot, force-on-force realistic scenarios based on actual events that have occurred where their decision making process will be explored and tested.” According to the U.S. Training Center website, the ultimate objective of “Home Defense” is to “inform the concerned citizen on methods of protecting the home front.” What kind of “home front” scenarios does this course prepare you for? The “Home Defense” course description doesn’t say, but knowing that Erik Prince is Blackwater’s founder and owner provides a clue. In a sworn affidavit, filed in a Federal court in Virginia last August, a former Blackwater employee, known as John Doe #2, said that Blackwater founder and owner Erik Prince “views himself as a Christian crusader tasked with eliminating Muslims and the Islamic faith from the globe.” The former Blackwater employee said: “Mr. Prince intentionally deployed to Iraq certain men who shared his vision of Christian supremacy, knowing and wanting these men to take every available opportunity to murder Iraqis. Many of these men used call signs based on the Knights of the Templar, the warriors who fought the Crusades … Mr. Prince operated his companies in a manner that encouraged and rewarded the destruction of Iraqi life. For example, Mr. Prince’s executives would openly speak about going over to Iraq to ‘lay Hajiis out on cardboard.’ Going to Iraq to shoot and kill Iraqis was viewed as a sport or game.” In his book, Blackwater: The Rise of the World’s Most Powerful Mercenary Army, Jeremy Scahill describes Prince as a man “dedicated to a Christian-supremacist agenda.” Looks like the company’s classes ensure all’s white on the Western front. http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/6019/weekend_warrior_bootcamp added by: Stoneyroad

Beachcomber Stumbles Upon Historical Shipwreck (North Carolina) – CNN

Beachcomber stumbles upon historical shipwreck By Sarah Hoye, CNN June 5, 2010 9:44 a.m. EDT Corolla, North Carolina (CNN) — Ray Midgett hunts the Corolla beaches on the Outer Banks of North Carolina almost every day. “Beachcombing, or metal detecting, or relic hunting is in my blood,” said Midgett, a retired government worker who hits the sand between October and April. “There are so many shipwrecks up here, it's just beautiful.” Midgett drives his pickup truck right onto the beach using the access road near the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. With a metal detector and shovel in tow, he's uncovered everything from antique coins to wedding rings. Yet his biggest discovery came in December when he located the remains of a historical shipwreck. The wreckage, hidden under the sand for centuries, became fully exposed after a winter of brutal Nor'easters, making it the oldest shipwreck found off the coast of North Carolina. But historians had to act fast to recover the ship, according to Meghan Agresto, site manager of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse. “This winter, it just got smacked. After awhile the ocean was going to take it back,” Agresto said. “The fact that we got it off the beach makes us excited because we got to save it.” Midgett and other beachcombers had discovered a number of relics near the shipwreck's beach grave site, including coins believed to be from the reign of Louis XIII in France and Charles I in England, lead bale seals used for identification, and spoons dating to the mid-1600s. Midgett said he feels a personal connection to the discovery. “This shipwreck is a part of me, and some of the other hunters, too, that have been hunting around it for years,” Midgett said. “I'm just so glad that they decided to save it.” The rough currents and shallow sand bars off North Carolina's Outer Banks have destroyed thousands of ships in what is sometimes called the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” However, it is rare to find the remains of a shipwreck — particularly a wooden vessel — intact. Throughout winter, the Corolla beach shipwreck would repeatedly get uncovered and covered again. The waves would also move it along the coastline, causing damage. “I'm glad we got to it when we did. … It may have covered back up and survived another summer,” Midgett said. “But next winter it would have been the same thing over and it eventually would have gone to pieces.” Midgett, who used to work as a government auditor, wanted to make sure his discovery was salvaged, so he personally lobbied North Carolina state Sen. Marc Basnight. After numerous phone calls and e-mails appealing to Basnight, a beach lover himself, he was successful. In April, volunteers from the Wildlife Resources Commission, Underwater Archaeology Branch, the Corolla Fire Department and area residents helped free the wreck from the sand and tow it near the lighthouse. Archaeologists originally thought the wreck could be the HMS Swift, a British Navy ship from the late 17th century that originally ran around in the southern Chesapeake Bay off Virginia's coast. The HMS Swift drifted to the Outer Banks, where it was looted once it hit shore, then disabled by the looters so it wouldn't resurface. After further examination of the ship's 12-ton skeleton — complete with wooden peg fasteners — archaeologists determined that it was not the HMS Swift, but most likely a merchant's ship dating to the mid- to late-1600s. That makes it the oldest shipwreck found along the state's coast. “History is the one thing we have that has a reasonable amount of certainty attached to it,” said Joseph Schwarzer, director of North Carolina Maritime Museums. “It tells us where we've been, it tells us what's happening, and it's a directional sign for where you need to go next.” Before the Corolla Beach discovery, the oldest shipwreck found along the state's coast was Queen Anne's Revenge, the presumed flagship of Blackbeard the pirate said to have run aground in 1718, according to the North Carolina Maritime Museums. This shipwreck is a part of me … I'm just so glad that they decided to save it. –Ray Midgett, beachcomber The remains of the Corolla Beach wreck and some of its artifacts will be moved to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum on Hatteras Island, North Carolina. Midgett and the other beachcombers are entitled to keep the coins and other artifacts found near the ship they discovered. “It's very exciting to find something from this time period,” said Richard Lawrence, director of the North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Branch for the Department of Cultural Resources. “And amazingly we found it in this beach environment. It appears this wreck has been sitting here for 350 years almost undisturbed until this winter.” Lawrence said the discovery would never have happened without Midgett. “Ray Midgett was probably more responsible than anybody to get this wreck off the beach,” Lawrence said. “He created enough of a stir to get various organizations involved. “Thankfully, Ray and his colleagues collected various artifacts that would have otherwise not survived.” added by: EthicalVegan

Children Taunted In Iraq: U.S. Solider Under Investigation (VIDEO)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Alaska-based soldier is under investigation for a video on his Facebook page that taunts smiling Iraqi children by asking if they're gay, if they engage in certain sex acts and if they would grow up to be terrorists. The two young boys did not appear to understand the questions, which were in English, but smiled at the camera and at times flashed the “thumbs up” gestures during the 30-second clip. Spc. Robert A. Rodriguez, who is based at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, was ordered to remove the video from his site, Army spokesman Maj. Bill Coppernoll said Monday. “The incident is currently under investigation, and the Army will take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation,” he said. It wasn't immediately clear if Rodriguez shot the video or just posted it, and discovering that will be part of the Army's investigation, Coppernoll said. The video is “disgraceful and clearly inconsistent” with standards expected of every soldier, he said. Raleigh, N.C., television station WRAL first reported the video after another soldier stationed at Fort Wainwright shared it with friends in North Carolina, who took their concerns to the station. WRAL aired part of the video and quoted from Rodriquez's Facebook page before the site was made private. Above the Facebook video posting, which was titled, “future gay terrorist!,” is written, “i got bored in iraq … so I kept myself entertained!” The boys are shown on a dirt road, facing a camera. A voice is heard asking the boys, “Are you going to grow up to be a terrorist?” When the boys show two thumbs up, the voice on the video says, “Yeah. All right. Cool. Yeah, terrorist.” There was no phone listing for Rodriguez in the Fairbanks area. Coppernoll said he did not know the soldier's hometown, but the video of the Facebook page shown on WRAL indicated Rodriguez listed Miami. “For anybody to be so cruel and disrespectful to children of any country but especially a country that we are occupying is really disgraceful and repugnant,” said Tim Stallard, a spokesman for Alaskans Together for Equality. click story link to see video added by: TimALoftis

Gates Foundation Suggests Sterilizing Males with Ultrasound

Among the 78 research projects to receive $100,000 grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation earlier this week as part of the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative, is an effort by researchers at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, to develop a non-invasive, reversible form of birth control for men — using ultrasound. Based on preliminary trials in rats, researchers James Tsuruta and Paul Dayton hope to develop a technique that would render men temporarily infertile for up to six months after one or two ultrasound exposures. The project is one of 10 to receive grants toward the goal of creating new technologies for contraception. Other projects geared toward men include a male contraceptive pill that researchers say would work by limiting the maturation of sperm, and research into the specific chemical compounds in the vagina that guide sperm to egg — which researchers hope to recreate in the lab and potentially use to “disrupt” sperm navigation en route to the egg. (Earlier this year, researchers at the University of California, San Francisco uncovered clues about how pH levels impact how sperm swim, and expressed hope that further research in this arena could yield possibilities for male contraception as well.) In early trials, Tsuruta and Dayton at UNC were able to halt rats' sperm production for up to six months after giving the animals two blasts of ultrasound spaced by two days, the New Scientist reports. The researchers believe that ultrasound disrupts sperm production with a combination of heat and shaking, and plan to further explore the mechanism at work with the new funding. http://wellness.blogs.time.com/2010/05/14/male-birth-control-stopping-sperm-with… added by: Dagum
