Elizabeth Edwards Passes Away at 61

Elizabeth Edwards, a lawyer, best-selling author, mother of three and the wife of two-time presidential candidate John Edwards, died in her North Carolina home. She was 61. Just days after doctors advised her to suspend her cancer treatment , Elizabeth tragically succumbed after battling the disease for over six years. Elizabeth Edwards was surrounded by friends and family in her last days, including John himself. She and John were estranged following the Rielle Hunter scandal. R.I.P. Elizabeth Edwards (1949-2010). Monday, Elizabeth posted what read like a farewell message on her Facebook page reading, “The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that.” “And yes, there are certainly times when we aren’t able to muster as much strength and patience as we would like. It’s called being human,”she added. “But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that, I am grateful.” Elizabeth is survived by a grown daughter, Cate, and two young children, Jack and Emma. Her son Wade died in a car accident at age 16 back in 1996. A graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School, she was her famous husband’s intellectual equal, his chief ideologue and most of all, his rock. Edwards helped remake the role of the political spouse in this era. She was the driving force behind her husband’s rise to the Democratic political elite. As strategist, campaign manager, surrogate and public interpreter for her husband, she earned a nation’s respect – but that respect grew in recent years. John Edwards’ career unraveled as quickly and shockingly after he fathered a love child with Hunter, then lied and possibly illegally tried to cover it up. But Elizabeth’s charm, intelligence and class never wavered, and her willingness to condemn John’s actions and separate from him spoke volumes. Our condolences go out to her children and loved ones.

Elizabeth Edwards Dies At 61

Wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards and best-selling author loses six-year battle with cancer. By Eric Ditzian Elizabeth Edwards Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards, died at her home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, after a six-year fight with cancer, according to multiple reports. A best-selling author and a driving force behind her husband’s political career, Mrs. Edwards discovered she had breast cancer on Election Day in 2004, when Senator John Kerry and Mr. Edwards, his running mate, lost to President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. She underwent extensive radiation and chemotherapy, sending her cancer into temporary remission, an ordeal she detailed in her 2006 memoir, “Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers.” Using his wife’s cancer as a driving force (the disease returned in 2007), heath care reform became a central platform for Mr. Edwards’ second presidential bid. But shortly after his defeat in the Democratic primaries, Mr. Edwards admitted that he had carried on an extramarital affair with a campaign worker, though he insisted the relationship took place during his wife’s remission. “Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him,” Mrs. Edwards said in a statement at the time. She’d go on to address the affair in a second memoir, “Resilience: Reflections on the Burdens and Gifts of Facing Life’s Adversities.” Mr. Edwards would later admit he fathered a child with the campaign worker, Rielle Hunter, and Mr. and Mrs. Edwards became legally separated in January. A graduate of the University of North Carolina Law School, Mrs. Edwards practiced law for many years and raised two children with her husband. In 1996, her 16-year-old son was killed in a car accident, a tragedy that spurred Mr. Edwards’ decision to run for the Senate in 1998. When Mrs. Edwards’ cancer returned in 2004, it was said to be malignant, to have spread to her bones, lungs and lymph nodes, and to be treatable but not curable. Just days ago, the Edwards family announced that the cancer had spread to her liver and that she had stopped all treatment. She was released from the hospital and returned home, where her family, including her husband, was said to be by her side. Share your thoughts for the Edwards family in the comments.

‘Vice Guide To Everything’ Host Recalls Residential Strip Club

Ryan Duffy discusses meeting Detroit man who runs a 24-hour strip club in dead parents’ house on premiere episode. By Rya Backer Ryan Duffy Photo: Mark Metcalf/ Getty Images A lot happens on MTV’s new series “The Vice Guide to Everything.” Hosts Ryan Duffy, Thomas Morton, and Shane Smith — who also co-founded the magazine that launched the Vice brand 15 years ago — travel to places like Russia, Ghana and North Korea in search of compelling people and their stories, which they’ll share with MTV viewers on Mondays at 11 p.m. Duffy’s adventures this season include getting shot (while wearing a bulletproof jacket) in Colombia and trailing a Mafia-funded pop star in Naples, Italy, but he recently told MTV News he didn’t have to travel far for his most memorable meeting. “I will always very vividly remember meeting Jay Thunderbolt,” Duffy said about the Detroit man who was running a 24-hour all-nude strip club out of his dead parents’ house. Duffy was treated to complimentary shots, got to look through Thunderbolt’s self-defense gear and enjoyed a lap dance from his crew of willing ladies. But the host admitted that he ran up against MTV’s standards team when it came to the footage. “You could show the girl doing the flip on my lap where she put her legs up. She started to spread them, but you couldn’t show the spreading. You had to cut it right before then,” Duffy explained. “Which was fine with me, by the way, because I have a mother and a grandmother,” he added. Thunderbolt clearly made an impression on the rest of the “Vice Guide” family, too, as he was invited to the show’s New York premiere last week with his return flight booked for the next day. “The thing about Jay is he probably hasn’t left Detroit in 30 years. He hasn’t flown in, God knows how long. When we booked him a flight his first question was, ‘How many of my guns can I bring?’ His second was, ‘Could you get me a smoking seat?’ Clearly a little bit dated in his travel plans, but the next day, Jay did not get in the cab we sent to bring him to the airport, or the next cab, or the next one, or the fifth one. And we have no idea whether he ever got on a flight and went home,” Duffy lamented. “So, Jay Thunderbolt could be roaming the streets of New York right now.” “The Vice Guide to Everything” airs Mondays at 11 p.m. ET on MTV.
