Racist Democratic Senator and former KKK member , Robert Byrd, dead at 92

“I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side… Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds” —Senator Robert Byrd — (D-WV) Robert Byrd was indeed a valuable link not only to the Senate's past, but also to the Democratic Party's history as the party of slavery, segregation, and opposition to equal treatment of blacks. Stolberg obviously loved Byrd's cornpone constitutional shtick in favor of filibustering a Republican president's judicial appointees. It's a shame that Stolberg exerted no effort to put Byrd's shtick in the context it merited. Byrd was old enough, for example, to have vowed memorably regarding the integration of the Armed Forces by President Truman that he would never fight “with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.” Even after his resignation from the Klan, Byrd continued to hold it in high esteem, writing to the Klan's Imperial Wizard in 1946: “The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia.” And Byrd was old enough to have participated in filibustering the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as well as to have voted against it after cloture along with 18 other Democrats — in the name of the Constitution, of course. Funny Stolberg didn't invite Byrd to take a walk down memory lane on that subject. It would have been highly illuminating. In Stolberg's Times profile Byrd cited the late Georgia Senator Richard Russell as his mentor and quoted the advice Russell gave him regarding the ways of the Senate. Russell was a wise man in many ways, but he was also one of the signers of the infamous 1956 Southern Manifesto opposing Brown v. Board of Education — in the name of the Constitution, of course. Also signing the Southern Manifesto was the late Senator Sam Ervin of North Carolina. Like Byrd, Ervin was resurrected as a heroic cornpone constitutionalist in the eyes of the mainstream media. Ervin was born again during his chairmanship of the Senate Watergate Committee in 1973. As with Senator Byrd, all was forgiven and forgotten when he became useful to the message of the day propounded by the mainstream media. Stolberg's 2005 profile of Byrd in the Times was accompanied by the photo of Byrd (left) with the caption: “Senator Robert C. ‘Toy Story 3’ On Track To Become Pixar’s Biggest Film Ever

The third installment of the adventures of Woody and his playtime buddies opened with the animation house’s biggest opening weekend, its $110.3 million besting “The Incredibles” by almost $40 million. Inflation and 3-D ticket prices notwithstanding, “Toy Story 3” has blown past its original incarnation in just two full weekends and figures to ascend to the upper tier of Pixar releases by next weekend So where will “Toy Story 3” end up in the Pixar ranks when its theatrical run comes to a close? The company’s current record holder is “Finding Nemo,” which netted $339.7 million in 2003 without the benefit of premium ticket prices. As things at the cinema stand now, though, those CGI fishies are about to lose their top Pixar spot to some 3-D toys. ” ‘Toy Story 3’ will have no problems at all surpassing ‘Finding Nemo’ to become Pixar’s top-grossing film ever,” said Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com. “[It] might even join the list of top 10 global blockbusters of all time.” For that to happen, “Toy Story 3” would need to cross the $400 million threshold, and to reach such a lofty goal, the movie will have to continue to attract repeat viewers. This week, two films that could eat into the “Toy Story” audience — “Eclipse” and “The Last Airbender” — arrive on the scene. “Eclipse” drops on Wednesday and should easily dominate the box office. The next day, “The Last Airbender,” which is based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon series, opens across North America. With kids and their parents headed off to take in these fresh films, will repeat viewership for “Toy Story” plunge? “The only thing standing in the way of ‘Toy Story’ becoming the biggest film of the summer is ‘Eclipse,’ ” said Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “These bloodsuckers have serious box-office bite. To say the sequel expanded the brand after the original is an understatement. The real question is: has this series hit a tipping point? Usually, by the third film in a franchise, grosses diminish exponentially. Not so with fanatical franchises like ‘Harry Potter,’ ‘Star Wars,’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Twilight.’ They don’t follow traditional box-office patterns. But that said, I do believe the fanbase has hit its glass ceiling, and that the threequel will perform very similarly to the sequel.” That would put “Eclipse” at slightly under the $300 million mark, whereas “Toy Story” could top that by as much as $100 million. Now lest you think “Toy Story 3” is simply benefiting from pricey 3-D tickets, note the case of 2009’s “Up.” That critically lauded Oscar nominee, presented in three dimensions (albeit before the current “Avatar”-induced 3-D craze), still could not unseat “Nemo.” For “Toy Story 3″ to have such a good chance of becoming Pixar’s #1 speaks not only to ticket prices but to the appeal of the film itself, which many have suggested is the best in the three-picture series. ” ‘Toy Story 3’ has captured the magic of Pixar in a blockbuster sequel — a potent combination,” Bock said. “And let’s not forget the ancillary merchandizing markets that have toy aisles abuzz and practically barren. No one can touch that type of overall domination.” Yet despite its popularity, the movie might not sell as many tickets as “Nemo.” Still, we count dollars, not tickets, and when it comes to the former, “Toy Story” is going to pull in record-breaking numbers. “With James Cameron not having a film this year, Woody and pals may even be the box-office champs of 2010,” said Pandya. Atheist billboard on Billy Graham Parkway: One Nation Indivisible (not under God)

The billboard features an American flag background and quotes the original phrase from the Pledge of Allegiance, before “under God” was inserted after “one nation,” in 1954. That was at the height of the Cold War and the addition was meant to distinguish the United States from the Soviet Union, which officially embraced atheism. Set to be up for four weeks, the billboards – costing a total of $15,000 – are a July 4 project of the N.C. Secular Association, a coalition of groups such as Charlotte Atheists & Agnostics, the Ethical Humanist Society of the Triangle and Western North Carolina Atheists. Their message: non-religious North Carolinians are patriots, too. “We’re doing this to raise the consciousness of the people of North Carolina,” said Warren, 29, an electronic technician who served in the Marines from 1999-2004. “We want to let them know that not everybody here is religious. There are atheists in North Carolina and we expect to be recognized and treated like everybody else.” The Pledge of Allegiance was penned in 1892 by a Baptist minister who left out any mention of religion. For generations, the Pledge has been recited by schoolchildren as they gazed at the American flag with their right hands over their hearts. President Eisenhower signed the “under God” addition into law on Flag Day, June 14, 1954. Over the years, the courts have been asked to rule on the constitutionality of the Pledge. Jehovah’s Witnesses, who swear loyalty to no other power but God, challenged the requirement that kids deliver the oath. And atheists have said that adding “under God” amounted to a violation of the constitutional ban on government endorsement of a particular religion. “When the words ‘under God’ were inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance between ‘one nation’ and ‘indivisible,’ they made a lie out of both those ideals,” Joseph McDaniel Stewart, vice president of FreeThoughtAction and one of the N.C. coalition founders, said in an e-mail. “You can’t have an indivisible nation if you draw a line between the godly and godless. We all belong here.” The billboard project is the latest sign that atheists – nationally and in North Carolina – are trying to boost their visibility and challenge conservative Christians in public forums. A recent series of assertive books by atheist authors such as Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris and British biologist Richard Dawkins have climbed national bestseller lists. And when Dawkins came to Charlotte this year to speak at Queens University, local atheists sponsored a fundraiser for the Richard Dawkins Foundation. Warren said more than 600 people have signed up on his group’s Web site ( www.charlotteatheists.com ). And its monthly gatherings usually attract about 50 people. The Charlotte-based Billy Graham Evangelistic Association declined to comment. The Rev. Mark Harris, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in uptown Charlotte, said he was grateful that the local atheists’ financial resources “are so limited” that they could afford only one billboard here. Left-Wing Talk Show Host Ed Schultz Lashes Out at MRC/NB Summer Intern

On his June 24 radio show, left-wing host Ed Schultz went on a rant against NewsBusters’ Matt Hadro, who earlier that day wrote a pretty inoffensive piece documenting how Schultz credited President Obama’s $862 billion stimulus package with more than doubling the size of his North Dakota construction firm. Schultz bizarrely (and incorrectly) tried to ridicule the Media Research Center summer intern as a spoiled rich kid. (Audio excerpt here .) Did Mommy and Daddy pay your way to go to school? Are you a little conservative boy that gets all the tax breaks of the top 2 percent rich? Have you ever gotten your hands dirty doing a job, Matt? [employs falsetto voice] ‘Oh, Matty, it’s time for milk and cookies! It’s 4:00, come home now! And here’s some more money. Oh, I think it’s so cute that you’re working for those wonderful conservatives over at Newsbusters. Oh, Matty!’ I’ll bet you that’s exactly who that kid is. What triggered Schultz’s wrath was Hadro’s matter-of-fact reporting of what the talk radio host said on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal on Wednesday: “We’ve gone from eight employees to 20 employees in the past year, because of the stimulus package,” he said of his construction company. “We’ve put some people back to work. There is some growth.” Schultz is evidently quite thin-skinned, since Hadro’s piece included no criticism of the host, his construction company, or the stimulus, but merely recounted what he said on C-SPAN. But the topic obviously struck a nerve, since Schultz lashed out at NewsBusters as “so negative” and “so hateful” in its depiction of him: Tell me, what’s negative about expanding a company?! What’s negative about giving someone a job?! These people are so negative on America, and so hateful of Obama and anybody who has any type of success whatsoever, the mission is to put ’em in light, in bad light, any way they possibly can. Here’s a longer transcript of Schultz’s June 24 fulmination: ED SCHULTZ: Hell, the righties, they’re even upset when we do create jobs. What’s the big deal? Those of you who follow the radio show, I wouldn’t call it a running feud because they’re not worth it, but I do love to point out every time I make NewsBusters, which is Brent Bozell’s right-wing, psycho-analysis, conservative think-tank. They like to, well, they just write a bunch of stuff about me, no matter what it is. (…) I’m on C-SPAN yesterday and I live my life a little bit on the air. It is a fact that this President has done so much for small business, more than anybody else that I can see in recent terms. And our company has gone from eight employees to 18, 20, 22, depending on what’s going on, what the project is! It’s American! It’s risk-taking! It’s what I talk about! And you jerks over at NewsBusters, you never call me, which shows that you’re not journalists. Never have you ever interviewed me. But this is how these conservative psychopaths operate. Tell me, what’s negative about expanding a company?! What’s negative about giving someone a job?! These people are so negative on America and so hateful of Obama and anybody who has any type of success whatsoever, the mission is to put ‘em in light, in bad light, any way they possibly can. So the story reads, “While defending the Obama administration as a champion for small business owners, MSNBC host Ed Schultz revealed that his construction company more than doubled its number of employees in the past year – thanks to the stimulus bill.” Oh! Obama wrote me a check. Is that what it was? Is that the idiot implication there? Anybody who knows anything about jobs in construction knows that you have to bid! But, I think what we’re going to do is, we’re going to check out who Matt Hadro is and we’re going to find out how much money he makes. We’re going to find out if he’s ever written a check for someone else who’s done work for him. We’re going to find out if he is a risk taker! In fact, I’m going to see if I can find out a little bit more about Brent Bozell. What has he ever done other than suck the hind tit off conservatives who want to fuel money right into his conservative think tank. He’s a leech. I’m out there supporting the boys, hiring kids, paying ’em union wages, getting ’em health care, doin’ what I gotta do, growing the company. But because I’m on MSNBC and because I champion for small businesses, they try to cook up some kind of a story like there’s, well, (sarcastically), what’s going on here? Continuing to read it — it’s actually kind of funny, because there’s no new information there. There’s nothing there, other than what I said on C-SPAN. Absolutely nothing there. And I love it. I love the publicity. And I love pointing out who these jerks are, and how poor they are when it comes to research. And Matt Hadro, I’m going to make you a star, buddy. I want to make you a star. I want you to show some spine and be a guest on the Ed Schultz radio show. Hell, I’ll even put you on TV. I can do that too. And let’s debate the stimulus package. And let’s find out what you’re all about. Did mommy and daddy pay your way to go to school? Are you a little conservative boy that gets all the tax breaks of the top 2 percent rich? Have you ever gotten your hands dirty doing a job, Matt? [Pretending to be Matt’s mother] ‘Oh Matty, it’s time for milk and cookies, it’s four o’clock, come home now. And here’s some more money. (Laughing) And Matt, I will pay your airfare from wherever the hell you are, at no expense to NewsBusters, I will put you on a plane. Well, better yet, I’ll put you on my plane. And I will take you to our construction site. And I will show you and let you interview the guys who were jobless until they came to work for E. A. Schultz Construction. You know what I’ll even do, Matt? I’ll even open up our books. I’ll show you what we’ve bid on, I’ll show you what we’ve won, I’ll show you what we’ve lost. In fact, if you have a hair on your ass, maybe you’d like to work. Do some real work instead of playing with that computer and throwing up a bunch of hate and half truths and accusations. You see, Matt, I believe in the working people. You don’t. You wanted to vilify our efforts. You want to vilify our investment. You want to put us in a bad light because we are, proudly, a liberal construction company! That actually pays people!

Why Can’t Media Acknowledge That Rolling Stone Is On the Radical Left?

One of the more annoying tics in the current bubble of national media coverage of Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s truly bizarre granting of access to Rolling Stone magazine was the utter lack of any description of the magazine — neither its ideology (hard-left) or its central focus (rock and pop music). Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz provided a little depth with an article on Thursday, which began: In the summer of 2008, Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner ended an interview with Barack Obama — whose campaign he financially supported — by saying, “Good luck. We are following you daily with great hope and admiration.” So Kurtz pronounced it “surprising” when the magazine was “assailing Obama from the left.” But in fact, we pointed out in February 2008 that venomous Rolling Stone political writer Matt Taibbi was trashing both Obama and Hillary Clinton as “superficial, posturing conservatives.” So why couldn’t reporters acknowledge this was a left-wing, anti-war magazine? Wouldn’t that color how people saw a “Runaway General” controversy? Surely, if Gen. McChrystal had given this kind of interview to The Washington Times, the result might have been the same, but it’s very likely the word “conservative” would have been routinely attached, unlike in this case. Reporters also would have pondered if there was some sort of conservative agenda at work, which they didn’t seem to ponder in this case. (Does Rolling Stone want to win in Afghanistan? Or withdraw immediately?) Kurtz was also rare in noticing “the cover of the current issue is devoted not to ‘The Runaway General’ but to Lady Gaga, wielding a pair of automatic weapons attached to her bra.” But the media’s treating Rolling Stone like it was a prestigious academic journal on military policy, not the place where you see if Miley Cyrus drew three stars for her latest CD.  Kurtz mentioned Taibbi’s “angry, profanity-laced pieces follow in the footsteps of Hunter Thompson.” He didn’t reprise some of Taibbi’s more colorful conservative woman-trashing rants for the magazine, such as graphically describing Michelle Malkin “teabagging,” or calling Ann Coulter a “skanky b—h whore.” You would think the press might remember Taibbi’s infamous rants in the alternative New York Press, especially that one in 2003 where he wrote “The entire White House press corps should be herded into a cargo plane, flown to an altitude of 30,000 feet, and pushed out, kicking and screaming, over the North Atlantic.” Here’s more of Kurtz: Taibbi says he lost friends in the administration after a December piece headlined “Obama’s Big Sellout,” in which he questioned whether the president is “the vacillating, ineffectual servant of banking interests.” In March, just before the health care bill passed, Taibbi wrote that Obama “did everything wrong,” along with “his team of two-faced creeps like Rahm Emanuel. . . . willing to sell out every inch of the body politic to the pharmaceutical and insurance industries.” These were surely more surprising pieces for the magazine than Sean Wilentz’s 2006 cover story on George W. Bush, titled “The Worst President in History?” Conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg once wrote that “Rolling Stone has essentially become the house organ of the Democratic National Committee.” So it’s worth noting that the magazine — which Wenner says has a “mission” to promote “social justice” — is assailing Obama from the left. Wenner says he is “disappointed” by much of Obama’s White House record and “disturbed that some pattern is emerging. It’s naive to think you’re going to change American policy by compromising on a lot of stuff.” He says Interior Secretary Ken Salazar should have been fired over the BP debacle and that the administration’s financial regulation bill “gets weaker and weaker” over time. Wenner says he is still “rooting” for Obama but hasn’t been invited to the White House: “I’m not part of the gentleman’s club.”

Drogba, following a speedy recovery, was cleared to play in Ivory Coast’s first World Cup game with a protective cast on the right arm he fractured during a friendly game against Japan. “He is an important player in the team … and his health has improved markedly,” Eriksson said. Following a goalless draw in their first match against Portugal, Ivory Coast face Brazil in their second game in a group that also includes North Korea. Eriksson said although he respected Brazil, he was not scared by the prospect of playing against the team ranked No1 in the world. “It is going to be a difficult game, but looking at what we did against Portugal, we are capable of creating a surprise against Brazil,” he said. Algeria prepare for World Cup battle by watching The Battle of Algiers

Footballers aim to draw on spirit of Gillo Pontecorvo’s revolutionary classic ahead of tonight’s match with England When football players seek inspiration they normally opt for a round of golf. Not the Algerians, though. Ahead of their big match with England tonight, the north Africans have made a trip to the cinema to watch a screening of The Battle of Algiers. Gillo Pontecorvo’s 1966 classic is set during the Algerian war of the 1950s and details the emergence of the native resistance against the imperial French. It’s a gritty, troubling film that shows the moral compromises that war forces on all sides. It’s also over two hours long, but that doesn’t appear to have stopped the Algerians from being inspired. “I had never seen it before. It was very moving, and it was very moving to spend the time together. This is the kind of thing we need to do to feel together,” said Hassan Yebda, the 26-year-old midfielder who played in England last season with Portsmouth. The screening was arranged by Algeria’s coach, Rabah Saâdane, and Yebda believes it will help the side forge a new mentality after losing to Slovenia in their opening World Cup match last Sunday. Yebda compared their new attitude to that which helped Algeria qualify for the World Cup in a playoff with Egypt. “When we were in Sudan we had an obsession to win and that is what enabled us to beat Egypt. Had we lost that match, we would have been eliminated. The same goes for tomorrow. We must go on to the pitch with the same obsession to win.” Quite whether “an obsession to win” would be the message most viewers would take from The Battle of Algiers remains to be seen. Indeed, the movie’s history as an educational tool is a chequered one. It was also the subject of an infamous screening for Pentagon staff shortly after the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Adam Lambert Tweets Shaved Head, Top Hat Look

In his new music video , Adam Lambert seems to pay tribute to the Mad Hatter. In a newly-posted Twitter pic, though, the singer appears to pay tribute to a formerly mad celebrity: Britney Spears. Lambert has shaven at least part of his head, as evidenced below. He’s covered his noggin with a top hat for now, though, a style he’ll show off this summer across North America on his new tour.
