Tribeca 2012: Redefining a Festival of Range and Diversity — and a ‘Wild Ride’

Ahead of tonight’s official kick-off of the Tribeca Film Festival with the world premiere of Universal’s The Five-Year Engagement , festival brass reflected on the event’s 10 years — and its upcoming second decade — at a pre-launch mimosa (and bloody mary) breakfast event downtown where it all began in 2002. “It’s been many things since we started, but it’s always come back to community, discovery and innovation, which are our core values,” said TFF co-founder Jane Rosenthal. Her partner Robert De Niro — one of Tribeca’s biggest trump cards in terms of public exposure — made a salutary drive-by today as well, quickly introducing the festival’s revamped programming team before shuffling off. “It’s best to let the programmers speak,” he said. “We’re excited for this year’s festival and ready for our next decade,” Tribeca Enterprises creative director Geoff Gilmore said to the gathering of about 100 people. “The biggest change here has been the programmers, but you’ll see major range and diversity in this year’s lineup.” Range and Diversity and a ‘Wild Ride’… Though the festival has become more streamlined compared to five years ago — when it screened about 120 features compared to this year’s 90 or so — Tribeca’s programmers describe this year’s lineup as a “balance” that showcases American and foreign work, reflected in the festival’s seven sections. “The competition is a snapshot of the range of the program,” said Genna Terranova, TFF Director of Programming. “And that competition points to the diversity of the other sections of the festival.” She went on to cite examples including Morgan Spurlock’s Spotlight section world-premiere Mansome , a documentary exploration of the rise of ‘man-scaping,’ and directing duo Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s Knuckleball! , another debut doc that deconstructs the erratic pitching style of the film’s title. Terranova then continued on to another festival section: “Tribeca’s Viewpoints includes films that push the boundaries of storytelling, including [world premiere] Resolution , which infuses genre elements. And the Cinemania section is a wild ride where most of our genre movies can be found, including Graceland from the Philippines to Jackpot from Norway.” What is a “Tribeca film”? Tribeca’s identity has dogged the festival almost since its start. Its earliest incarnation kept the bulk of the festival’s programs in the Tribeca neighborhood, and Hollywood fare didn’t figure as prominently as it will in 2012, when Five-Year Engagement and The Avengers open and close the festival, respectively. After the festival lost some key venues in the downtown area, it moved north to theaters in the East Village, Chelsea and beyond. (Like past openers, tonight’s premiere will take place at midtown Manhattan’s Ziegfeld Theater.) But organizers say Tribeca is less about where it is than what it says it hopes to reflect. “What is a Tribeca Film?” Gilmore asked rhetorically, perhaps hoping to head off a question some journalist inevitably brings up every year. “That is not an easy answer. We’re born of a diverse community, and we want to showcase quality and discovery for that audience, and we have no geographical limits.” “Not Pandering” to World Premiere Status… “We don’t have the same pressures to program only world premieres here,” said Tribeca’s new Artistic Director Frédéric Boyer, adding that programming an event where world debut status is obligatory usually spells doom in terms of quality for most festivals outside Cannes (where Boyer programmed Directors Fortnight) or Sundance. Still, the festival will be a launching pad for 54 titles this year — in addition to other North American and U.S. premieres. It’s the economy, stupid… Four years after the first wave of the financial crisis, Movieline asked if the after-effects of the meltdown were reflected in this year’s crop of films, since many have been conceivably in production in the last two or more years. “It’s not as popular a theme as you might think,” Gilmore said, though Terranova and Tribeca Film Festival executive director Nancy Schafer contended that the “great recession’s” aftermath can be found in a number of films in the festival. “[Competition drama] Nancy, Please is a product of economic anxiety that is born out of the crisis,” said Schafer, who added that the budgets of American filmmakers overall are significantly lower compared to pre-crisis levels. Looking forward, Tribeca’s programmers touted the festival’s evolution into the online space reflected in its ongoing Tribeca Online Film Festival component and are looking beyond, teasing a broader agenda to re-evaluate or even redefine what it is to be a film festival. “I think the Tribeca Film Festival has come into its own over the decade,” said Gilmore, who served 19 years as director of the Sundance Film Festival before joining Tribeca in 2009. “We are advancing strategies online, and we’re going to expand that going forward. We’re looking at how Tribeca can be on the cutting edge of how film festivals will be in the future. That’s our agenda right now.” Read all of Movieline’s Tribeca 2012 coverage here . NY Jets CB Antonio “I Got 10 Kids By 8 Baby Mamas” Cromartie Adds A New Bundle Of Joy To His Starting Lineup, Reality Show Possibly In The Works

NY Jets CB Antonio Cromartie Welcomes 10th Child We hope this guy can remember all his kids’ names this time around. SMH! Fix the scoreboard: Now it’s 10 kids from eight women in six states. Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie, 27, recently had his second child with wife Terricka, making 10 — one short of a football squad. Their baby boy, Jagger, joins sister Jurzie — and eight half-siblings from Cromartie baby mamas across the country. But the happy occasion is mixed with turmoil. His far-flung fatherhood has intrigued a TV production company that wants to create a reality show about the clan “trying to co-exist as a modern family,” a source told The Post. Most of the moms want to do the show, but “Cro” says no. The baby mamas he left behind have banded together so their kids can bond with their brothers and sisters in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and New Jersey. The single women can use the extra money to help raise their kids, but they also think it’s important “to document their journey,” the source said. “They want Antonio’s support.” Cromartie has deflected the plan, blocking any filming of his offspring. It’s not the kind of spotlight sought by Cromartie, who famously fumbled the names of his brood on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” in 2010 — and even forgot to count one kid. Once busy playing the field, the fertile footballer has angered his first baby mama by wresting custody of their son, Alonzo, now 7. “He’s supposedly a role model, but he’s not doing what he should be doing as a father, or as a man,” said mom Rosemita Pierre, of Tallahassee, Fla. Cromartie defies a court order that allows her to speak with her son three times a week, she charged. “They don’t answer the phone,” said Pierre, who’s called the cops in Randolph, NJ, to knock on Cromartie’s door. “It’s a hurtful situation — like he’s trying to erase me.” Pierre, who gets no child support from Cromartie, favors the TV show because she wants her son to know all his half-siblings. So does Ryan Ross, a hotel employee in Los Angeles, who met Cromartie at a San Diego nightclub, dated him about six months, and delivered his fifth child, son Tyler Jae, now 4. Ross first encountered another Cromartie baby mama when she brought newborn Tyler to visit the former-San Diego Charger at his apartment. She ran into Latoya Burley, of Houston, Texas, who was there visiting with daughter Deyjah, her first of two with Cromartie. They hit it off. Ross now stays in touch with several other Cro baby mamas. “We’re not catty women. We have a close, tight-knit friendship and understand what each other’s going through. We reach out to share news about the kids, to talk, to vent,” she said. As for Cromartie, she said, “We co-exist for the sake of my son.” Cromartie — who signed a four-year, $32 million contract last fall — pays more than $3,500 a month to each baby mama, except Pierre. He was sacked as a womanizer and cad by Rhonda Patterson, a corporate lawyer and ex-Miss Black North Carolina. She wrote a memoir, “Love, Intercepted,” telling how Cromartie wooed her, then canceled their wedding a week before the event and dumped her six months pregnant. Soon after, she learned Cromartie wed Terricka Cason, a model with a child from a prior relationship. Patterson, whose daughter, London, 3, “is the joy of my life,’’ wants no more to do with the jilting Jet. “That chapter for me has completely closed — talking about Antonio, thinking about Antonio, even caring what’s going on in his personal life,” she said. But, she added, “I wish him the best. Any time a baby is born, it’s a blessing.” Now that sounds like one helluva reality show! But real talk, dude needs to make sure he’s taking care of all of his kids…including the first one. He made his bed and now he has to lay in it. Source More On Bossip! Amanda Bynes Continues Crashing, Partying

Amanda Bynes may have been arrested for DUI in early April, but the actress isn’t letting that legal hiccup get in the way of her Hollywood partying! The troubled star – friends say Bynes has been lost for years – drove herself to hot spot Greystone Manor last night, where she was photographed texting behind the wheel… prior to backing her car over a curb in a red zone! See for yourself: Bynes did eventually make it into the establishment, which is more than can be said for the day after her arrest. Mere hours after the actress was released on bail following her drunk driving incident, she was denied access at THE SAME BAR she had frequented the evening before. At the very least, someone should tell Amanda to text a cab next time.

One Direction Offer A Lesson In British Slang

In preparation for U.S. tour, fans might want to learn ‘bird’ and ‘sithee.’ By Jocelyn Vena One Direction Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images One Direction will soon be embarking on their first-ever U.S. headlining tour . The British imports will take their mop-top, sunny pop tunes all across our great land. Before they hit the road, MTV News caught up with the fivesome in New York City, where they performed on “Saturday Night Live.” The guys revealed some key British slang terms American girls might want to learn to impress them. To get you in-the-know before your next One Direction concert, the guys broke down key phrases to use in conversation: “Trousers” are pants, per the guys, and a “jumper” is a sweater, and therefore possibly a good thing to wear with trousers. Louis Tomlinson said “fit” is a key word to describe an attractive person, explaining, “If a girl’s fit, she’s hot.” One Directioners might use “fit” to describe the “blokes” in 1D: “He’s a nice bloke,” Liam Payne said of the term for a guy. On the other end of the spectrum, Harry Styles let us in on a word for a special lady and romantic interest. “Quite slangy,” Harry explained, “but if someone was your girlfriend, you’d be like, ‘That’s my bird.’ ” And, finally, “sithee” means “see ya” or “goodbye.” That will be perhaps the hardest thing a Directioner will say to one of the guys if they should meet them during their outing this year. The tour will kick off May 24 in Fairfax, Virginia, as part of a North American tour set to wrap up July 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with stops along the way including Chicago, New York, Atlanta and Las Vegas. They are also set to take the stage at New York’s famed Madison Square Garden on December 3. The guys’ debut album, Up All Night , which features their lead single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” is out now. Share your favorite British slang in the comments below! Lollapalooza Headliners Include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Black Keys

Jack White, Avicii and Justice are also slated to make mainstage appearances at Lolla, set for August 3-5 in Chicago. By James Montgomery Red Hot Chili Peppers Photo: Getty Images Over the course of 20 years, Lollapalooza has developed a reputation as perhaps the most multi-hued of festivals, thanks in no small part to Perry Farrell’s booking of acts that ranged from Ice Cube to Pearl Jam — and just about everyone in between — and his own, uh, uniquely psychedelic outlook on things. But for this year, he’s going to a rather basic color scheme: namely red, black and white. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Black Sabbath and the Black Keys top the bill for Lollapalooza 2012, set for August 3-5 in Chicago’s Grant Park. Joining them are a list of top-notch electronic artists (always a passion of Perry’s), including Avicii, Justice, Calvin Harris and Bassnectar. Lolla 2012 marks the only North American fest appearance for the reunited Sabbath, and it’ll also be the first time in six years that the Chili Peppers (who broke through at Lolla ’92) appear at the fest. White will make his first solo appearance, and the Keys? Well, after years of mid-card service, they finally make the leap to headliner status this year. President Obama Voices Opposition to Minnesota Anti-Gay Marriage Bill

Though he does not officially support gay marriage, President Obama voiced opposition to a proposed anti-gay marriage ballot measure in Minnesota today. Obama for America Minnesota Communications Director Kristin Sosanie said: “While the President does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples.” “That’s what the Minnesota ballot initiative would do – single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples – and the President does not support it.” The proposed Minnesota marriage amendment reads simply, “Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota.” It’s the second time in as many months Obama has weighed in on the issue. The Obama campaign in North Carolina issued a statement in March with the same language in opposition to Amendment One, which would also define marriage in the state’s constitution as between one man and one woman. Just as in North Carolina, same-sex marriage is already banned by a statute in Minnesota. Unlike the North Carolina amendment, the Minnesota amendment does not mention civil unions or domestic partnerships. Today’s news comes after White House press secretary Jay Carney stated that First Lady Michelle Obama – in referencing how Supreme Court decisions will impact whether people can “love whomever we choose” – was not commenting about marriage equality. Her husband, though “evolving” in his views on marriage equality, technically opposed marriage equality and supported civil unions in his 2008 campaign.
