Thoughts on Cheese, Chores, and Harvesting Pigs At The Fabulous Beekman Boys Farm

Episode five in week four of The Fabulous Beekman Boys . As far as I know, neither the number four nor five are considered lucky or holy or particularly special. But this episode, I’m betting this episode is something special. Real special, real real, superduper special. As always, I’ll be working with the goat scale. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Marketing Junk Food to Kids Could Soon be Illegal

Photo via SMH It’s a topic that sparks heated debate, and one that we’ve tackled here before: Should corporations be allowed to market unhealthy food to children? When a county in California banned McDonald’s Happy Meals , it caused a veritable uproar. Happy Meals, are one of the most cannily marketed kids’ products — yet many feel that it’s the parents’ role to decide what to let their kids eat, regardless. So I’m curious to see how the nation will take the news that market… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Thousands of Undiscovered Plants Face Extinction

Image credit: Hans Dekker /Flickr Scientists have estimated that between 5 million and 50 million flowering plant species may be threatened with extinction. The shocking thing about this number is that fewer than 2 million have been discovered. That means millions—and possibly tens-of-millions—of species may vanish from the planet before they are known to science. And these numbers, a new study shows, may be conservative…. Third-Rate Tabloids Declare End of Brangelina

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are so done. Come on, it could not be more obvious. After the 12th consecutive fight to end all fights, what more is there to say? Even the big-name celebrity gossip tabloids took a rare break from bashing Brangelina this week, but not New Weekly and Famous , which apparently exist. The two biggest stars in Hollywood split up – and shockingly, no one noticed until NW broke the news! What a scoop! Same with that police blowout. Wow . There’s apparently no limit to the number of times police are called to their home, and Ange moves out, or Brad is sneaking around with Jennifer Aniston . Who cares if we’ve heard it 20 times before, or there’s never any evidence to support these outrageous claims, they keep selling magazines (somehow). Guess Angelina Jolie being awesome isn’t as salacious of a story … FAMOUS-LY BAD REPORTING : Angelina is “sick of Brad’s boozing.” Elsewhere, Posh Spice dropped $1M to prove she’s Queen of the WAGs and the Glee cast was told NO SEX!

Fox Head Predicts Low Ratings for Conan

Why did Fox executives pass on their chance to scoop up Conan O’B rien? According to Fox head Kevin Relly, O’B rien’s TBS debut will probably earn ratings with a “decimal on the left side of the number,” and on Fox, “there would have been an enormous amount of pressure to see the decimal on the right side.” Around the time that NBC started O’B rien’s booting process, he was drawing less than a 2.0 rating in the key demo, but as THR notes, even a cable hit like The Daily Show can only manage a .8. Can Conan do better? [ THR ]

US town votes on plan to ban foreigners renting homes or having jobs

A Nebraska town, angry over a surge in the number of Hispanic residents, is voting today in a referendum on a new law that would require foreign nationals to get a licence to live in the town. The referendum in Fremont has been prompted by a sharp rise in Hispanic people drawn by work at local meatpacking plants combined with fears over job losses and demand placed on the town's social services because of the economic downturn. If approved, tenants who are not US-citizens would be required to get an “occupancy licence” from the city council. Even residents of nursing homes would be required to obtain such a licence. Federal law requires employers to verify the immigration status of workers but the proposed Fremont law would also open violators to local sanctions. Supporters insist it is not racist and is essential to protect jobs, healthcare and education for local people because the town's Hispanic population has surged from 165 to more than 2,000 in the past 20 years. It is unclear what proportion of those are in the US illegally but the big meatpacking plants where many work say they only employ people whose immigrant status has been verified. The Fremont Tribune has reported cases of Hispanic people, who are legal residents, being verbally abused and told to return to Mexico. Jerry Hart, one of the three sponsors of the legislation, told the Fremont Tribune that the proposed law is in part a security measure. “The federal law was put into place for a reason – to control how many people come into this country and to regulate the people, so they don't have communicable diseases and are not bringing in drugs or having criminal records and these people who are sneaking in – you don't know what you're getting. We could have terrorists and gang members and people involved in drugs,” he said. John Wiegert, another of the sponsors of the referendum, said: “A lot of them are coming here for the American dream and they're causing nothing but an American nightmare to me.” Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman has declined to take a position even though he is a former Fremont city councillor and owns and rents out property in the city. Some business owners oppose the measure, claiming Hispanic residents bring money to the town and are concerned at the cost to taxpayers of legal challenges by civil liberties groups. The American Civil Liberties Union is suing the state of Nevada over a proposed referendum to introduce tough immigration laws – similar to the controversial measures in force in Arizona – which require police to detain anyone they reasonably suspect to be in the US illegally. The proposed Nevada law would require non-US citizens to carry proof they have the right to be in the US and make it illegal to transport or house undocumented immigrants, among other measures. The ACLU and the Nevada Open for Business Coalition, a mix of casino owners, shopkeepers, unions and civic groups, on Friday asked a court to block the vote on the grounds it would promote racial profiling and hurt the state's economy.”Not only does the intent of the proposal blatantly violate America's most fundamental values of fairness and equality, the expansive scope of it intentionally confuses voters,” said the ACLU's lawyer, Maggie McLetchie. The proposed Nevada law has run in to objections from some in the business communityconcerned at the economic impact of Arizona's anti-illegal immigrant legislation on the state. The controversial law has led to boycotts of Arizona by some organisations, costing the state part of its lucrative convention business as well as affecting tourism. Towns near the Mexican border also report a sharp drop in the number of customers from Mexico. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/jun/21/us-town-licence-foreign-nationals added by: emarston

Taylor Swift Says She’s Taking A Break From Acting

‘I’m making music. That’s always been my number-one love,’ singer tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Frederick Breedon/ WireImage After nabbing an MTV Movie Awards nomination for her work in “Valentine’s Day,” and a cameo in “CSI,” Taylor Swift has had fans wondering whether she’ll hit the big or small screen again soon. When we caught up with her, Swift said if a great role were to come her way, she wouldn’t pass it up. “It’s been so cool to be able to be a part of things that have been really fun, like being in ‘Valentine’s Day’ and getting to guest star in ‘CSI,’ ” Swift recently told MTV News. “I feel like I get to do these little mini-movies when I make music videos, so that kind of fulfills that little need or desire. But, if I ever get time, I might like to [act again].” Still, Swift was clear about her main focus. “I’m not making movies right now. I’m making music,” she said. “That’s always been my number-one love.” Indeed, Taylor has been busy working on a new album, which she teased, last month, would revisit some familiar territory. “[The new album] is going great actually,” Swift revealed. “I’ve been writing it for the last two years, so this summer it’s all about the finishing touches and getting in there in the studio and recording the last couple songs.” Asked what her inspiration was for the upcoming project, Taylor said the answer should be obvious: “Boys and love.” Should Taylor star in more romantic comedies?
