Phoenix Mayor Steps Up And Lives Off Of Foodstamps For A Week!

Can a politician really relate in just one week? Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton tried to step out of his comfort zone and see what it’s like to live off of $29 a week through the states SNAP Program …and the man didn’t cheat once! Claiming to have lost a few lbs due to lack of food, he’s passionate about fixing the low level of poverty in his state. Arizona has more than 1.1 million folks on food assistance and the US has more than 46 million that are accounted for. This week I joined staff and board members from the Arizona Community Action Association (ACAA), the Valley of the Sun United Way and others in the community in the week-long SNAP Experience when we’ll limit total food purchases to the weekly budget of a typical SNAP participant: $4.16 a day. That’s about $29 a week for one person and $97 a week for a family of four. The SNAP Experience, through which participants also will be asked to blog about its impact, is scheduled Sept. 15-21. September is Hunger Awareness Month. With American poverty levels approaching the highest levels since 1965, 1.1 million Arizonans rely on SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) to feed their families. Identifying, in a concrete way, with struggling families is an important exercise for any leader. By walking in the shoes of those who depend on the SNAP program, I certainly feel like I’ve gained critical perspective as a policymaker. From a broader perspective, I’m starting to think about all the other challenges families on food stamps (SNAP) must face at the same time they are stretching their food benefit. Census data in 2010 showed Arizona had the second highest poverty rate in the nation with 21.2% of its citizens living in poverty. The national figure was 14.3 percent. We’ve improved since then, but we’re still in the 10-poorest states category. Worse, women raising children alone here aren’t doing well. More than 45% of mothers raising children by themselves are in poverty. That’s why turning this economy around is so important. The best “program” for any struggling family is a job that pays a living wage. That’s what I’m focusing on for every Phoenix family. We’re going to give the Mayor credit for making the effort and spreading awareness on the issue. If every politician was required to do this, do you think we’d see more efforts and less b*tching about the needy, struggling, low-to middle-income classes? Images via facebook/shutterstock

Arianny Celeste Works Its Good

I’m a big fan of this Arianny Celeste chick. She’s exotic, fit and has retweeted a few of my posts. And for that I feel we have the making of a long lasting loving relationship. She just doesn’t know it yet. Anyway, these pictures are from a promotional shoot for F3 Nutrition. I don’t body build, so I have no clue what this stuff is. I always thought if you eat a balanced diet, you get all the nutrition that you need. But what do I know? I’m not a doctor. However, I do know that a daily does of Arianny Celeste could cure erectile dysfunction. It’s scientifically proven. Look it up.

What’s Next for Paula Abdul?

She’s currently among the nation’s unemployed, but Paula Abdul says that won’t remain the case for long. “I will definitely be returning to television,” the ousted X Factor judge told reporters this week while promoting FemBody Nutrition, a line of nutritional supplements available at GNC. “I am in the middle of many network meetings, and I’m being pitched a whole bunch of different ideas.” Abdul says she has no hard feelings toward Simon Cowell, or anyone in general. The former Los Angeles Lakers Girl and hit singer appears to be in a positive place, saying: “Right now life is good, and I never worry about reinvention. I think it’s the most exciting thing to do.” Fair enough. But let’s plan Paula’s future for her, shall we? What do you think should be her next professional move?

Pure Comedy: 50 Cent, Floyd Mayweather, And Mike Tyson Star In “The Hangover” Inspired SK Energy Shot Commercial

If you haven’t heard by now, Curtis is pushing a new product nowadays, SK Energy Drink, and the new commercial is hilarious! Fiddy might not make good songs anymore , but that damn sure doesn’t mean he isn’t entertaining! All jokes aside, what 50 is doing with this energy drink is commendable. After spending most of his career picking fights and instigating, Curtis has finally attached himself to a cause to do some good. As both a massively successful artist and a survivor of a harsh childhood, 50 Cent found himself compelled to use his success to help others in need. A trip to the World Cup in Africa opened his eyes to rampant poverty and hunger across the continent. Back home, 50 and his trusted manager Chris Lighty began brainstorming ways he could help kids born with the odds stacked against them. They immediately thought of Chris Clarke, the entrepreneur behind Pure Growth Partners. PGP’s revolutionary mission is to find and create sustainable brands using a “one for one” give-back component to donate directly to the world’s most effective charities. Together, they conceived a product that perfectly fit 50′s driven persona and their mutual desire to make a difference: the Street King energy shot. Street King provides focus and energy, two qualities 50 credits with being crucial to his success. And every single bottle of Street King purchased will furnish a meal for an impoverished child. Providing his fans worldwide with positive energy – while helping children get the nutrition they need – is just the kind of powerful impact 50 has been longing to make. Now Street King Energy Shots are here to turbo-charge your drive to succeed at whatever you do. And you’ll not only feel good, you’ll feel good about yourself, too. Fast Food Restaurants To Accept Food Stamps?

Read the original:

We  stumbled upon a rant by a Yahoo contributor who seemed very upset at the prospect of KFC, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc. accepting food stamps. He’s not alone. There are folks out there ready to (keyboard) protest if McDonald’s lets poor people use their benefit cards to get a happy meal—with a toy even! These are the same people who seem to think being poor is a sentence, rather than a circumstance. Or that it’s somehow enjoyable to not know where your next meal is coming from. Maybe the feds should bring back powdered milk and government cheese. While we’re at it, why don’t we produce Soylent Greens (including the special ingredient)? Sure there’s gross abuse of the system, an allowing KFC to accept food stamps seems like one of them, but if you are at a poverty level where you don’t have access to maybe even a hot plate, why can’t you get a 2 piece dinner? Perhaps they should limit it to ‘healthier’ selections if it’s that much of an issue, but if you qualify for the benefits, I say you eat what you want. If that means you run out of your food stamps in 2 weeks, then next month you’ll be wiser, and cop that hero and free soda from the bodega instead. I’d much rather eat Hamburger Helper in my middle class apartment with middle class comforts, than eat a bucket of chicken and have to find a vacant bedbug infested subway bench. Here’s the opposing perspective: “Welcome to Taco Bell, will this be cash, charge or food stamps ?” Just when I thought I’d heard it all, now fast food restaurants want Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients to be eligible to use their food stamp benefit at selected restaurants. Restaurants such as Taco Bell, KFC and Subway believe that there are certain types of SNAP recipients who are homeless or living in conditions that do not allow them hot meals and these people would benefit from being able to use their food benefit at fast food restaurants. Seriously? Fresno, Calif., officials are considering legislation that would permit SNAP benefits to be used at fast food restaurants in their area. Arizona, Michigan and other parts of California already allow the practice and Kentucky is currently considering it. I already object to the many things that can be purchased with SNAP benefits. Junk food, soft drinks, pre-packaged frozen foods and candy are all permitted under current law. This is really a no-brainer. The law should restrict use of those taxpayer-provided funds to the basic staples: meat, starches, bread, milk, vegetables and cheese. Maybe there should be even an allowance for toiletries. But, it’s a moral crime to have public aid recipients eating better then the very taxpayers who pay for their benefit and a sad reflection of just how far this sense of entitlement has penetrated into our society. There have been too many times that I watch someone in front of me at the checkout lane pile steaks, roasts and even lamb chops into their cart and then pay for it with a food stamp card. They’re eating better than me, and I work two jobs just to keep my head above water. And, the last time I went grocery shopping, the person even had a birthday cake from the bakery in the cart as well. All paid for with food stamps. Soon middle class workers will find themselves driving home from work to eat a box of Hamburger Helper because payday is still a week away and the money is gone. Meanwhile, Joe Homeless person is standing in line at KFC waiting for his bucket of original recipe chicken, hot biscuits and two sides. Oh, and he can super size his soft drink too. GOP Blocks Childhood Nutrition Bill

(AP) House Republicans have temporarily blocked legislation to feed school meals to thousands more hungry children. Republicans used a procedural maneuver Wednesday to try to amend the $4.5 billion bill, which would give more needy children the opportunity to eat free lunches at school and make those lunches healthier. First lady Michelle Obama has lobbied for the bill as part of her “Let's Move” campaign to combat childhood obesity. House Democrats said the GOP amendment, which would have required background checks for child care workers, was an effort to kill the bill and delayed a final vote on the legislation rather than vote on the amendment. Because the nutrition bill is identical to legislation passed by the Senate in August, passage would send it to the White House for President Obama's signature. If the bill were amended, it would be sent back to the Senate with little time left in the legislative session. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md. said the House would hold separate votes on Thursday on the amendment and the bill. Republicans say the nutrition bill is too costly and an example of government overreach. “It's not about making our children healthy and active,” said Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., the top Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee. “We all want to see our children healthy and active. This is about spending and the role of government and the size of government – a debate about whether we're listening to our constituents or not.” Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has also taken a swipe at the first lady's campaign, bringing cookies to a speech at a Pennsylvania school last month and calling the campaign a “school cookie ban debate” and “nanny state run amok” on her Twitter feed. The legislation would give the government the power to decide what kinds of foods could be sold and what ingredients may be limited in school lunch lines and vending machines. The Agriculture Department would create the standards, which would likely keep popular foods like hamburgers and pizza in school cafeterias but make them healthier, using leaner meat or whole wheat crust, for example. Vending machines could be stocked with less candy and fewer high-calorie drinks. The bill would provide money to serve more than 20 million additional after-school meals annually to children in all 50 states. Many of those children now only receive after-school snacks. It would also increase the number of children eligible for school meals programs by at least 115,000, using Medicaid and census data to identify them. The legislation would increase the amount of money schools are reimbursed by 6 cents a meal, a priority for schools that say they don't have the dollars to feed needy kids. added by: TimALoftis
