Celebrity of the Year Finalist #6: Charlie Sheen!

With 2010 drawing to a close, it is with much pride that THG unveils its 10 finalists for its prestigious, Fourth Annual Celebrity of the Year award. These stars all gave us their best, their worst, their nude pics (sometimes) and their scandals (often). This month, THG honors that greatness. Following Sarah Palin checking in at #7 with her impressive list of self-serving Tweets and caribou killings, we present Celebrity of the Year finalist #6 … Charlie Sheen ! Sheen book-ended a year he’d likely rather forget – and, thanks to heavy drug usage, may already have – with two different investigations into two different violent escapades. First, there was the Christmas Day confrontation with Brooke Mueller , who would eventually wise up and divorce this troubled star. Then, there was the NYC rampage against Capri Anderson, who still may sue Sheen for allegedly threatening her life. In between these disturbing incidents, Sheen… Had a car stolen out of his driveway, only for it to later be found, totaled, along the side of the highway. On two separate occasions ! Attended rehab. Recited some hilarious Family Guy quotes as a character on that Fox sitcom. Actually received a raise to sign a new Two and a Half Men contract. Sat back and counted his millions as that show remained the most-watched comedy on television. In a world where Tiger Woods loses countless sponsors and fans due to his infidelity, and Miley Cyrus receives flak for soaking a legal herb on her 18th birthday, the fact that Sheen has undergone no significant legal or professional recourse for his actions is one of 2010’s most enthralling mysteries. It’s confusing and it’s depressing, but it also gives us no choice but to include Sheen on any end-of-the-year countdown.

Elizabeth Edwards Laid to Rest in N.C. Funeral

For 75 minutes yesterday, Elizabeth Edwards, who died this week at age 61, was eulogized as smart, funny, authentic, outspoken and always optimistic. Above all, she was passionate and a fierce lover of her family. “She would do anything in the world to protect all of us, no matter the personal cost was to her,” said her daughter Cate Edwards , eulogizing Elizabeth. The late Elizabeth Edwards (1949-2010) . “She has been a light house to all of us. She’s always been that source of light to us. Every lesson she has taught us has become part of our ethic.” Her estranged husband, former Sen. John Edwards, joined more than 1,200 mourners at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Edenton, N.C. The political wife, lawyer and author’s close friend Hargrave McElroy and former UNC Law School classmate Glenn Bergenfield also spoke Saturday. Unfortunately, the public memorial was not without controversy. A small group of protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., known for picketing military funerals, demonstrated near the church. On the other side of the street, reports The News Observer , stood a much larger group, holding signs with the optimistic words “hero” and “hope.” The wife of the two-time Democratic presidential candidate died at her Chapel Hill home Tuesday after battling cancer for the last six years. “Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth’s presence, but she remains the heart of this family,” the Edwards family said in a statement. Elizabeth separated from John in January after he acknowledged he fathered a child with Rielle Hunter , a videographer and campaign aide. May Elizabeth rest in peace.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden: Married!

Joel Madden and Nicole Richie have made it official. The longtime partners and parents of two tied the knot Saturday in a lavish yet private ceremony at the Beverly Hills home of her father, Lionel Richie. While the details are being kept under wraps, we do know there was an elephant in the room … or at least outside of Lionel’s estate. Really, there was . Congratulations to the newlyweds! Nicole Richie walked down the aisle in a Marchesa gown that was custom made in NYC, with celebrity hairstyle guru Byron Williams doing his thing. Joel’s twin brother Benji Madden took care of best man duties, while Samantha Ronson served as a bridesmaid in the musically inclined wedding party. Her best friend Masha Gordon was the maid of honor, with the wedding party also including Joel and Nicole’s adorable children Harlow and Sparrow. Nicole’s former BFF / Simple Life mate Paris Hilton was not in attendance, however. Benji was probably grateful to miss out on that awkward reunion. Delivery trucks and other personnel swarmed Lionel’s house all week and security was super tight, with the street around the estate closed to traffic. As such, there’s a surprising lack of photos of the guests – Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, Kris Jenner and others among them – making appearances. Good for them, keeping it so private. Congratulations on pulling off that feat … and on the momentous occasion itself! Nice job Joel and Nicole !

Lauryn Hill Set To Perform String Of East Coast Concerts

The reclusive singer will hit the stage for stops in Boston, New York and Miami beginning December 20. By Rebecca Thomas Lauryn Hill Photo: Taylor Hill/Getty Images Lauryn Hill is inching closer to a comeback. At this summer’s Rock the Bells, the reclusive raptress emerged for four tour stops, giving front-to-back performances of her classic debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, almost a dozen years to the day after its release. Now, L-Boogie is set to meet her hungry public again with a grip of shows along the East Coast. According to Brooklyn Vegan , Hill will hit Boston, New York, and Miami for a string of shows beginning December 20. She’ll make stops at Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg at the end of the month, and the Bowery Ballroom in New York City on New Year’s Day. The “Ex-Factor” singer will then resume the jaunt in the spring with a pair of performances in the Magic City as part of Miami’s Jazz in the Gardens Festival. Tickets for the first trio of shows went on sale on Friday (December 10); no additional dates have been announced. At this summer’s Rock the Bells, Hill chuckled when we asked her about a due date for fresh material, but told MTV News, “We’re getting closer. That’s all I can say.” The ex-Fugees frontwoman, who became something of a voice for a generation of pre-millennium girls drawn to her cerebral brand of rap&B, shunned the limelight not long after the jaw-dropping success of her debut. But in August, she remarked that the industry had changed in recent years, adding that she was feeling sparked by how eclectic music in the age of MP3s was sounding. “You got a lot of young talent out there,” Hill observed. “Because we don’t necessarily have the same sort of industry complex that used to exist, people don’t always give, I want to say, proper respect to. But they’re doing it in a really kind of unusual, unique and hard-core way.” Lauryn Hill tour dates, according to Brooklyn Vegan:
