John Friend: A Business-Yogi & Brand Guru

Me and the clean-cut Anusara master, John Friend. It was just another ordinary day, chatting with John Friend , Anusara yoga founder, over tea and lemonade at a café in Union Square, NYC…OK, not really. It was the kind of afternoon a yoga studio owner, practitioner and instructor like me only dreams of. The celeb Hatha yogi happened to be in town, reached out to TreeHugger (Bonnie, too, chatted with him at Wanderlust ),… Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Catfish’ Subject Is A ‘Bit More Wary’ When It Comes To The Web

Nev Schulman now understands where taking risks ‘can lead when it comes to the Internet.’ By Kara Warner Nev Schulman Photo: MTV News The much-buzzed-about little indie that could, “Catfish,” is finally in theaters. Despite the unusual approach Universal took with the marketing campaign — i.e., setting up the Sundance darling as a genre or horror-like film — it is a must-see movie with a very timely and unique message. The heavily hyped documentary revolves around NYC-based photographer Nev Schulman and a series of curious events that occur when he begins an online friendship with an 8-year-old girl and a romantic relationship with her older sister. When MTV News caught up with the filmmakers, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, they addressed the persistent “is it real?” debate . A few weeks later, we had the opportunity to sit down with all three of the “Catfish” guys: the filmmakers and the movie’s star/subject, Nev Schulman. Because the film exposes a very real and, at times, emotional real-life experience related to the realm of online relationships and social networking, we asked Nev if he has since changed his virtual presence or approach (without revealing any spoilers, of course). “Through all of this, basically, I’m trying to stay true to my regular behavior,” Schulman said. “I like to take risks, putting myself out there, saying yes to things. I have certainly a new appreciation for where that can lead when it comes to the Internet,” he explained. “So when it comes to meeting new people online, I’m definitely a little bit more wary now as far as getting to know them too personally before I actually meet with them in person, but as far as using the Internet and Facebook and Twitter and YouTube and having accounts on all these social-networking websites, I think it’s great. I think that there’s a lot of good that can come from it.” Nev Schulman added that until you really know someone, it’s best to err on the private side of things. At least in the beginning of a virtual relationship — no matter if it’s platonic or romantic. “Basically, what it comes down to is, keep it private, because you can always share with people once you’re ready to, but there’s no reason to willy-nilly share everything about yourself with anybody.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Today Co-Hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb Endorse New Bloomberg Smoking Ban

In the fourth hour of Thursday’s Today show NBC’s Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb took a strong stance against the right to smoke, pretty much everywhere, as both endorsed Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s proposed ban that goes several steps further than just restaurants. During the opening chat session of the hour, Kotbe announced: “So some good news in New York City…Mayor Bloomberg is considering banning smoking in all places like parks, beaches and Times Square.” Gifford also praised the move declaring that ” Second-hand smoke is a bigger killer than asbestos or a lot of other things” but later seemed to contradict herself as she proclaimed: “I’m all for personal rights. I’m becoming more and more of a libertarian the older I get.” The following is the full exchange as it was aired on the September 16 Today show: HODA KOTB: So some good news in New York City if you are against people smoking in public. Mayor Bloomberg is considering banning smoking in all places like parks, beaches and Times Square. [On screen headline: “Butt Out, NYC Mayor Proposes Ban On Smoking At Parks, Beaches”] KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Outside of public buildings, everywhere? Everywhere? All public places? KOTB: That’s, I’m, I have to say I’m kind of for that. GIFFORD: Well remember the outcry when he first banned it in restaurants? Everybody said, “Nobody is gonna, it’s gonna hurt everybody. Nobody’s gonna go to restaurants any more.” KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: Really? People get hungry. KOTB: Yeah. They still go. GIFFORD: But, but they smoke outside. You know it’s so funny that, that would be announced today. Because yesterday I left our building and some of our best friends, around here, do smoke. And they’ve been battling with it! KOTB: Sure. GIFFORD: They would really love to be able to quit but they can’t so far. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: As I walked out, I mean it was into, and it was a beautiful day yesterday- KOTB: Gorgeous. GIFFORD: -into this, this like, this- KOTB: Cloud. GIFFORD: More than that. Yeah, like a heavy duty- KOTB: Cloud. GIFFORD: And, and, and my, my hair stunk the whole way home. KOTB: Yeah, yeah. GIFFORD: I was gasping for breath because I’m, you know- KOTB: Asthmatic. GIFFORD: -I’m highly allergic to it. So it’s, it’s one thing to do it to yourself, and I’m sorry anybody is addicted because it’s, a terrible, terrible addiction. But second-hand smoke is a bigger killer than asbestos or a lot of other things as well. KOTB: Right and I do, there are some states that do not ban it in restaurants. I think there are 26 that do, around the country. So a lot of them still don’t. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: I think a lot of people are starting to get on the bandwagon. But there is nothing worse than sitting on the beach, like enjoying the- GIFFORD: The fresh air! KOTB: And then there comes this waft of smoke and literally, and you can’t really move away. Because you move and the wind changes or you go somewhere, like you’re gonna be in it, no matter what. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: But I’ll bet you this is gonna have, there will be a lot of outcry over this. GIFFORD: There will be outcry, there will be. Maybe it’ll help some people give it up better. You know they won’t have any option- KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: But the, the other thing is you know, the thing is about a personal right. I’m all for personal rights. I’m becoming more and more of a libertarian the older I get. The more they take away our rights, the more I’m saying, excuse me, wait a minute! But I don’t think any right that we have, should infringe on the rights of other people. KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: And that’s the basic problem with the, with the smoking. KOTB: I agree with that. I agree with that. GIFFORD: Okay.

Justin Bieber Says ‘Girlfriends Are Trouble’

Pop star admits he doesn’t have much time for dating right now. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Justin Bieber at the VMAs on Sunday Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News Now that Justin Bieber properly took over the VMAs , lined up a bunch of projects and even announced the release date for his forthcoming 3-D movie , one might think he would want to find that special someone to share his days with. But just moments after winning his Best New Artist VMA on Sunday, the 16-year-old megastar explained that he’s too busy for love right now. “I mean, girlfriends are trouble at this age,” he explained to MTV News. “Girls are fun to hang out with but, like, having that one steady girl … we’re constantly traveling and one girl’s not gonna really [work]. You can’t really have one girl. I don’t really have any crushes at the moment.” With so much going on in his life, the “U Smile” singer is just trying to balance his career and personal life. “Right now, the best thing is [that we’re] just teenagers having fun doing what we love,” he explained. “We’re just staying ourselves and remaining humble.” With his “Never Say Never” collaborator Jaden Smith by his side, Bieber revealed that he and the Smith family may work together again in the future, with Bieber possibly working with Will Smith on his next project. However, Bieber kept the details sparse, saying, “We’re trying to figure something out.” In addition to trying to re-team with pal Jaden and family, Bieber said that for his next album, he wants to work with his friend and fellow Canadian Drake. “[It’ll] probably [come out] fourth quarter next year,” he said. “Drake is gonna be on that album. I’m not sure [who else]. I’m gonna ask him if he can get [Lil] Wayne on there.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Justin Bieber’s Triple-Threat VMA Performance: Making The Show

Best New Artist winner was incredibly hands-on, weighing in on his dancers, drum kit and leather lettermen jackets before the big show. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber rehearses for the 2010 VMAs Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Before Justin Bieber even hit the stage for rehearsal at L.A. Live on the Friday before the VMAs, you could feel the energy in the air. And once the teen pop star actually began rehearsing, it became clear Bieber’s Video Music Awards performance would be influenced by the “A Hard Day’s Night”-inspired VMA promo he shot. Bieber first did a rough run-through of a medley of his hits “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” Then he stepped out of a chauffeured red-and-white ’57 Chevy, followed by a gaggle of female fans — an obvious reference to the Beatles. When Justin took to the stage, he wanted to make sure he got everything right: from the way his drum kit sounded to the way his dancers hit their marks to the look of his leather jackets for the show. With the girls surrounding the stage as they watched Bieber rehearse, the driven, hard-working teen proved he would be hands-on and involved in every detail. What was perhaps most surprising was that his outdoor rehearsal went virtually unnoticed by anyone other than those involved with the practice session. While Bieber seemed to be nailing an engaging first VMA performance, Kim Kardashian could be heard teasing about their “romance” in a hilarious voiceover. As the hour-and-a-half-long rehearsal progressed, fans did eventually turn up — one even shouted to Bieber, “Follow me on Twitter!” — but the scene around the barricaded stage area remained relatively chill. Justin made sure to remind fans of one thing: “What’s up, everybody? I love you!” The rehearsal ended with Bieber at the drums, closing out “Somebody to Love,” with black and red confetti falling from the sky. It remained entangled in the trees right through Sunday, when yet more confetti came down on the Best New Artist winner. Eminem And Rihanna’s Triumphant VMA Plan: Making The Show

Between commitments in Hawaii and NYC, the hit collaborators found time to kick off the show in style. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Eminem performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage In the days before Eminem’s opening performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards on Sunday, the MC had to do a little juggling. Not only did he have to make room in his schedule for the big show; he had to work out a cross-country trip so that he’d arrive in New York in time for the first of his two Yankee Stadium shows with Jay-Z on Monday night (September 13). But though the MC wasn’t able to stick around and accept his wins for Best Male Artist and Best Hip-Hop Video, he planned to open the show proving that he was already a winner. ” Eminem is opening the show , and the theme of his performance is ‘triumph,’ ” VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News in the days prior the broadcast. “It’s a testament to the year he’s had, his return to the top. He tells a story, and the viewers will definitely pick up on that.” At first, it seemed like Eminem wasn’t the only person with scheduling troubles. “Love the Way You Lie” collaborator Rihanna originally said she wouldn’t be able to make the show because she was in Hawaii, shooting “Battleship.” But then, she either changed her mind at the last minute or planned to trick us all along. The flame-haired singer took the stage and belted out her haunting chorus at the end of Em’s set. “SURPRISE!!!” she tweeted after the performance. “Just had to do it, guys.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.
