‘Hunger Games’ Shoots Down All-Time Records

After spending an elusive third straight week at #1, ‘The Hunger Games’ now ranks among the biggest box-office successes in history. By Kevin P. Sullivan Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate For the third weekend in a row, “The Hunger Games” proved its power as a serious box-office champion. Two competitors stood a chance to take the top spot, but both “American Reunion” and “Titanic 3D” fell short, leaving “The Hunger Games” at the top with earnings of nearly $303 million since its debut. Now that “The Hunger Games” has racked up its third consecutive weekend at #1, it seems like an appropriate time to see where the film stands among the all-time box-office champs, what records have been broken and what records still stand. Consecutive Weekends With so many movies coming out each week, it’s often difficult for a film to retain the top spot in its second weekend, let alone its third. Repeat weekends have become a mark of true success at the box office and signs of a real hit. With this weekend, “The Hunger Games” became the first film in 2012 to spend three straight weeks at #1. The most recent movie to achieve that was “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” back in November of last year. Versus “Twilight” Speaking of the vampire romance series, “The Hunger Games” officially passed the highest-grossing film in “The Twilight Saga,” “Eclipse.” The third “Twilight” movie grossed just over $300 million, right behind where “The Hunger Games” stands after its third weekend. Many had compared the two series throughout the lead-up to “The Hunger Games,” but since its debut “The Hunger Games” has thrived off word-of-mouth and a larger male audience than “Twilight.” Champion of 2012 Right from the start of the summer movie season, the biggest tentpole films of the year already have a film to beat. “The Hunger Games” is far and away the highest money earner of the year so far. Its total gross currently stands roughly $104 million ahead of its closest competition, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax.” The toughest competition has yet to come, however. With releases like “The Avengers,” “The Dark Knight Rises” and the first “Hobbit” still on the lineup for 2012, it will be difficult for “The Hunger Games” to hold onto that spot. Opening Week So much of the “Hunger Games” buzz came from its enormous opening weekend, the third best of all time behind “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” and “The Dark Knight.” With a $152 million bow, it also ranks as the best March and spring opening ever. All Time Granted the movie is only three weeks old, “The Hunger Games” still has a long way to go before ranking among the highest earners of all time. It currently stands at #37 behind “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” Do you think “The Hunger Games” will be the highest-grossing film of 2012, or will “The Dark Knight Rises” take the glory? Drake Invites Us To His ‘Re-Bar Mitzvah’ In ‘HYFR’ Video

Lil Wayne, Trey Songz, Birdman and DJ Khaled are along for the ride in celebratory clip. By Kara Warner Drake in his ‘HYFR’ video Photo: Universal Drake certainly isn’t holding back in releasing his new music videos! Minutes before the MTV premiere of the highly anticipated, Rihanna-featuring video for “Take Care,” Drake debuted the Lil Wayne-assisted video for “HYFR” on his October’s Very Own blog. As we saw via a few photos from the set recently, the video is a re-creation of Drizzy’s Bar Mitzvah . The clip opens with footage of a very young Aubrey “Drake” Graham at a friend or relative’s Bar Mitzvah years ago. Little Drake says “mazel tov” to camera, and then we cut to the video’s introduction, which is printed in white lettering over a black background. “On October 24th 2011 Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham chose to get re-Bar Mitzvah’d as a re-commitment to the Jewish religion.” We see another few seconds from the archive footage, in which little Drake is busting some moves on the dance floor, looking totally comfortable performing to the camera, before we hear the opening of “HYFR” and cut to Drake dressed to the nines in his freshest bar mitzvah formalwear standing in front of a group of what appear to be his childhood friends — including longtime producer Noah “40” Shebib. The video takes place in three different settings: The first is the opening shot outside the temple, the Bar Mitzvah ceremony inside the temple and the reception after the ceremony. Over the course of the nearly four-minute clip, we watch Drizzy chillin’ with his homies all civilized-like, then we see him going through the motions of the Mitzvah, reciting scripture inside the temple with a rabbi, and then we watch everyone wildin’ out at the reception with drinks, dancing and talking to ladies. Decorations and cakes are smashed, and Weezy — who is first shown fully clothed, wearing a panda hat/mask — eventually strips down to just his pants. There are also playful assists/cameos made by Trey Songz, Birdman and DJ Khaled. Where “Take Care” has a more voyeuristic, contemporary-art feel, “HYFR” is just one big party that we’re all invited to watch. Which Drake video do you like best? Fedde Le Grand Headlines Steampunk Cosmic Opera Act II

NYC EDM event also features Felix Cartal, Zedd, Funkagenda, aerialists and LED screens. By Akshay Bhansali Fedde Le Grand Photo: Andrew Rauner NEW YORK — Due to post-Miami-EDM fatigue, Thursday night’s Cosmic Opera Act II may have only been for New York’s super-committed dance music fans. With 1,500 or so tickets sold, though, for those in attendance, the high-concept Opera-meets-EDM party was an exceptional effort. Dubbed “Imbroglio,” the second Act of CO was set in a steampunk world, with the experience meant to evoke the fire, angst and turmoil that comes after two people first meet and fall in love. It was similar to the way that EDM and Opera did in February when Cosmic Opera debuted, featuring Swedish House Mafia’s Axwell as headliner. “There’s fire and gritty performances, and aerialists battling it out in a Thunderdome above the audience,” Cosmic Opera founder Justin Cohen told MTV News Friday (April 6). “We have this claw chandelier, it’s actually the heaviest chandelier in the world right now, and everything is moving, which goes along with that story of this is Imbroglio Act II. And now things are getting a bit crazier.” And crazier it did get, but in a uncontrived, cool way. Fire-wielding performers spit flames around the Opera’s organ-like DJ booth and stage-flanking runways. A unique 360-degree laser was featured in a spectacular light display. “Eyes Wide Shut”-esque masked performer couples ambled about the crowds, shifting from infatuation to clash and back. Forty-foot-high LED screens moved forward and backward, and the chandelier claw would descend down into the audience lined with lights. And Cohen and his team tapped a talent pool certainly capable of bringing an angsty, aggressive, hard-hitting audio experience to New York both nights in dBerrie, Funkagenda, Felix Cartal , Zedd and headliner Fedde Le Grand . Rising star Zedd continues to dazzle, and it’s worth noting that for being a nice, young, smallish (in size up there onstage) guy, he continues to lay down among the more explosive sets in dance music. And Thursday night was no exception. The venue’s six LED screens depicted flames, and five dancers in white wigs and silver attire hit the stages’ runways for Zedd’s Opera entrance number, with Zedd signaling with his hands, “Let’s do this.” And with that, his onslaught began: Fans chanted back Angger Dimas & Bassjackers’ “Ria.” Giant lengths of steam shot out into the crowd for Dada Life’s “Kick Out the Epic Motherf—er,” and the audience seemed in a frenzy for Knife Party’s whopping “Internet Friends.” After an electric set ended with a new song, and Zedd’s new mash-up of “Slam the Door” and buddy Skrillex’s “Cinema” (Zedd revealed to MTV News he calls it “Don’t Slam the Cinema”), he handed the baton over, literally via a performer, to Dutch house music star Fedde Le Grand , who headlined both nights of COII. A sumptuous violin solo performance led into Le Grand’s headlining organ-DJ booth, steam-punked out with pipes and a baritone saxophone. And then FLG began his set with a hearty remix of his hit “So Much Love” and followed with room-shaking hit after hit. Calvin Harris’ “Feel So Close,” Steve Angello’s “Knas,” Benny Benassi’s “House Music” and Arty’s “Around the World” were all part of his arsenal. But so were some stellar reworks. Steam shots drove the crowd mental when FLG dropped opening performer dBerrie’s remix of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” An unknown bootleg of OneRepublic’s “Apologize” was masterful, as was a provocative “Leave the World Behind” vs. Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams.” After Fedde Le Grand’s two-hour closing set and a three-hour production breakdown, Cohen and his team readied Friday night’s final showing of Cosmic Opera Act II, which will see the Felix Cartal join in the festivities. True Or False: Did Sheree Whitfield Get Fired From Real Housewives Of Atlanta???

“Who gon’ check me boo!”… how about Bravo? Sheree Whitfield’s days as a Real Housewife of Atlanta are numbered, and she’s been told exactly how many days she has left on the hit reality show… ZERO! Sheree was flown out to NYC and that’s when Bravo broke the news that they would not be renewing her contract for next season. This news is surprising considering Sheree has been a part of the cast from the very beginning and her storyline isn’t exactly drama-free. Remember that fight in South Africa? Beyond that, we have seen a softer side of Sheree this season. She seems to be more focused on being a mother, getting child support from her ex-husband and building that Chateau that probably won’t see the light of day if this rumor is true. Plus, we all know what happened to previous cast members who didn’t keep the drama going (moment of silence for DeShawn Snow and Lisa Wu-Hartwell). DAYUM! Sucks to to be you. This will give her time to focus on her She by Sheree fashions and collecting them non-existent racks on racks on racks from her ex-hubby Bob Whitfield. Source More On Bossip! ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ Trailer Teases ‘Beautiful’ Vampire Bella

Kristen Stewart’s red eyes left one fan ‘speechless’ at the midnight premiere of ‘The Hunger Games’ in NYC. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Stacey Sommer Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part I” Photo: Summit Entertainment NEW YORK — At midnight Friday (March 23), fans had two things to be excited for: the premiere of “The Hunger Games” and the trailer for “Breaking Dawn – Part 2.” The full trailer made its debut ahead of “Hunger Games” and, in it, not too many big, action-packed reveals are made, but one thing’s for sure: Bella is in full vampire mode. “I think the ‘Twilight’ trailer was really interesting,” Esther Portyansky told MTV News at a screening in New York City. “Usually trailers are more about the plot, but I think the people that are gonna watch know what happens in the last one so it was more character shots and getting people’s attentions. Vampire Bella was very beautiful. I liked the red eyes.” The film has amped up Twilighters’ excitement for the November release. “I was so happy. I am so excited,” Elana Lerner said. “I saw the first part of ‘Breaking Dawn’ at 12, and I will do the second one again. It looks awesome. That last part of the trailer, where she looks like she’s about to pounce on that animal, was nice.” Joanna Cruz added, “I’m speechless. I really don’t know what to say about that. It was so quick. It didn’t even give what was going to go on in the movie, all we saw was the red eyes.” That tease was enough to whet Stephen Carrasco’s appetite. “It looks cool. I didn’t read any of the books, but I saw the films and I’m excited to see it,” he said. “It looks good. Those contacts are awesome, like work the red-eye thing.” With more trailers expected to drop before the premiere later this year, Carrasco wants to see “more killing,” and Portyansky agreed that she’d love to see more action. “The next ‘Twilight’ trailer, I think I’d like to see part of the showdown among the vampire coalitions, ’cause as much as the character shots are really good, I’m definitely looking forward to the action.” Directed by Bill Condon, the final movie in the “Twilight” franchise will hit theaters on November 16. ‘Hunger Games’ Fans ‘Blown Away’ At Midnight Showing

Early reports predict midnight box-office totals of more than $18 million. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Stacey Sommer Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate With midnight showings of “The Hunger Games” sold-out for weeks in advance, expectations for the highly anticipated film were even higher for those brave enough to journey to theaters in the middle of the night. Thankfully, Katniss Everdeen and the rest of the tributes did not disappoint. Early reports for the midnight box-office totals predict returns north of $18 million, according to Variety . Those figures put “The Hunger Games” in contention with “The Dark Knight” and “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” which earned $18.5 million and $22.2 million at midnight, respectively. Early predictions for the weekend total estimate “The Hunger Games” earning $125 million . MTV News caught some rabid fans on their way out of the first showings of “The Hunger Games” in New York City, and most of them couldn’t have been more pleased. Joanna Cruz said she was left “speechless” and was “on the edge of my seat the whole time.” Some took their praise ever further. Judith Cruz called it the “the best movie ever.” “I can’t wait to see it again,” she said. “It was awesome. I cried at certain parts.” Though most of the people we interviewed expressed their love of the movie as a whole, a few couldn’t help but point out that they missed some scenes that ended up on the cutting-room floor. “I loved it. I thought it was awesome,” Elena Lerner said. “It wasn’t completely true to the book — they left out a few scenes — but overall, we were both freaking out in our seats. It was so good.” Josh Solomon felt similarly. “I thought the film was very good, well done,” he said. “It missed a couple scenes from the book. It missed spots, but I thought it was done pretty well.” But for one fan in particular, the movie could never live up to the book. “I don’t know how I feel about it. When I read a book, I get very in-depth, and I felt like they missed a lot of what was in the book,” Samantha Cohen said. On the other hand, Esther Portyansky said that the movie was a reminder of why she liked the book so much in the first place. “It was incredible. I was absolutely blown away by it,” she said. “I read the books last summer, and I think I’d almost forgotten how amazing they were, frankly. The movie more than did it justice.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
