Nevada Caucus Results: Mitt Romney Rolls in Silver State, Newt Gingrich & Ron Paul Fight For Second

Results show Mitt Romney winning the 2012 Nevada caucuses by a sizable margin, giving him his third victory in the race for the GOP presidential nomination. With 71 percent of precincts reporting, Romney has 47 percent to Newt Gingrich’s 23 percent and Ron Paul’s 19 percent, with Rick Santorum at 11 percent. In his victory speech from Las Vegas, Romney made clear that he’s looking ahead to the general election, focusing his remarks on President Obama. “Four years ago candidate Obama came to Nevada promising to help,” he said. “Mr. President, Nevada has had enough of your kind of help,” he said. “We’re not going to settle for a president who tells us it could be worse,” he added , trying to downplay recent job gains and the drop in unemployment. A victory in Nevada leaves Romney primed for what should be a strong month for him: Six more states vote in February, and he won four of them in 2008. Still, the race is far from over. Not including Nevada’s delegates, which will be awarded proportionally, Romney has just 80 of the 1,144 needed at this point. If someone were to start pulling off some upset wins – not out of the question in this fluid cycle – on or before Super Tuesday (March 6), we could have a race. The 2012 Nevada caucus results (incomplete): Mitt Romney: 47% (11,822 votes, 11 delegates) Newt Gingrich: 23% (5,623, 2 delegates) Ron Paul: 19% (4,619, 2 delegates) Rick Santorum: 11% (2,749, 0 delegates)

Chuck Schumer at a campaign event for Lew Fidler Senator Chuck Schumer had some fun the other day when he “mistakenly” confused the “Buffett Rule,” President Barack Obama’s tax proposal that the wealthy pay at least the same tax rate as the middle class, with presidential candidate Mitt Romney. “So, it’s a priority for us to act on some kind of Romney—I mean, Buffett Rule,” he joked . Florida’s Young GOP Voters Confident In Mitt Romney

‘He’s a successful businessman, and that’s what we need,’ one supporter tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Andrew Jenks Mitt Romney after winning the Florida primary Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images TAMPA, Florida — As you might expect, things were pretty upbeat at the Mitt Romney primary party Tuesday (January 31). With the GOP presidential candidate solidifying his front-runner status following a convincing win over Newt Gingrich, the former Massachusetts Governor’s supporters had high praise as they poured out of the ballroom at the Tampa Convention Center. After following Romney on his bus Monday and speaking with young voters about the potential impact of the controversial new voter-registration laws in Florida , MTV’s Power of 12 wanted to hear what policies and campaign promises drew 18- to 29-year-old voters to cast a vote for Romney and how they think he may be able to help their generation. Hillary Brunner, 19, said she was drawn in by Romney’s stance on immigration policy. “I chose to vote for Mitt Romney because I really like his policy on the DREAM Act,” she said of Romney’s pledge to veto a long-stalled immigration measure that would create a path to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants. “And making it if you want to immigrate to this country you have to go to the military first instead of just going to college. I think the military is a great way to show that you really want to be an American and that you love this country and that you are dedicated to this country.” Her friend, Shelly Mittal, 19, was more drawn to Romney’s character. “I think he has great family and moral values and he possesses a strong attitude towards good business, and I think he can get the economy back toward where it needs to be,” she said. Not only did Romney trounce bitter rival Gingrich by drawing 46 percent of the vote to the former House speaker’s 32 percent, but in a turnabout from the three previous contests, CNN exit polls in Florida showed that he also finally broke through to young voters (18-29). While Romney had reliably scored with older voters, in Florida, he won 39 percent of the youth votes to 26 percent for Congressman Ron Paul, 23 percent for Gingrich and 12 percent for Rick Santorum. One of those twentysomething converts, Dywan Washington, 22, said he believes Romney’s extensive experience in the private business sector could be the remedy for the country’s financial ills. “The key people that we need in Washington, D.C., at any level of government [are] more business people,” Washington said. “We can’t keep going to career politicians who’ve spent 20 to 30 years in D.C. … Governor Romney is a perfect example of executive leadership that we need. … We need executive experience and business experience, and that’s why I support Mitt Romney.” Earlier in the evening, after congratulating his rivals, Romney issued a stern warning to the Democratic Party in his victory speech. Suspecting that the Obama campaign was savoring the vicious infighting among the GOP candidates, he said, “A competitive primary does not divide us; it prepares us. And we will win.” After he and Gingrich (and their SuperPac supporters ) spent more than $20 million on negative ads, Romney took the opportunity Tuesday night to turn his focus away from his competitors and put it squarely on the president: “My leadership will end the Obama era and begin a new era of prosperity.” MTV is on the scene in Florida! Occupy Romney Rally: Protesters Crash Florida Campaign Stop

‘At this point, it really doesn’t matter who you’re voting for, because you’re picking between a lesser of two evils,’ an Occupy protester tells MTV News. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney campaigning in Jacksonville, Florida Photo: MTV News DUNEDIN, Florida — As MTV’s Power of 12 tagged along with the Mitt Romney campaign on Monday, we saw three very pumped-up, supportive crowds who knew just when to put their hands together for the former Massachusetts governor . As the crowd shuffled out of picturesque Pioneer Park on Monday afternoon, college student and waiter Adam Rezendes, 24, was feeling pretty confident about whom he was going to cast a vote for in Tuesday’s (January 31) Florida primary. “I am going to be voting for Mitt Romney,” he said. “I believe in Mitt’s conservative views and [his desire] to stop the federal spending and repeal Obamacare. He’s got a lot of great views that really appeal to me. … I trust the country in his hands more than any other candidate.” At the same time, some members of the Occupy movement were facing off with Romney supporters who took umbrage to the sign they were toting which read, “Dear Mr. 1% Go Fire Yourself. Love, The People. Not Corporations.” Recent high school graduate Emily Rogers, 19, has been staying with her friends in Occupy Tampa after logging time with Occupy Orlando, and she was definitely not there to support the GOP front-runner. Rogers had made the trip a few days earlier to attend Friday’s hearing on the state’s controversial new voter-registration laws . And while she didn’t agree with Romney’s take on the legacy of the Obama administration, Rogers wasn’t necessarily throwing in with anyone else, either. “At this point, it really doesn’t matter who you’re voting for, because you’re picking between a lesser of two evils,” she said. “Which, in my opinion, is not how the government should run when it’s supposed to be for the people. You can line them all up like bricks next to each other, but one is really not that much better than another. You’re picking from red-orange to orange to yellow-orange, and those are your options.” As discouraged as she was about her choices for president, Rogers said she was even more concerned about the raft of states with new voting laws she fears could dissuade young voters from coming out to the polls this year. “The voter suppression laws will definitely have an impact on students and young people,” she said, noting that college kids who have changed dorms and not updated their address on their voter registration could find their votes invalidated. “Your vote won’t even count. Students that have that knowledge, they don’t even want to go out and vote because they think, ‘Well, my vote’s not going to count anyways, so whey even vote?’ ” MTV is on the scene in Florida! Mitt Romney’s Grand Entrance And Big Finish Before Florida Primary

Traveling with the GOP presidential hopeful, you will hear the words to ‘America the Beautiful’ … a lot. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney talks to supporters in Florida Photo: Gil Kaufman/ Getty Images DUNEDIN, Florida — “How many times have we heard this song already?” That’s what a beat reporter who’s been traveling with the Mitt Romney campaign said Monday afternoon (January 30) at the day’s second campaign stop in Florida. With less than 24 hours to go before Tuesday’s primary , Romney was about to take the stage to the strains of one of his signature warm-up songs, Toby Keith’s “Made in America,” and the press corps knew what was going to happen next with their notebooks closed. “I’m gonna wake up in the middle of the night singing it,” the reporter sighed as the crowd in Pioneer Park filed in on a picture-perfect winter day. But for the writers and camera people slogging it out on the trail, it was “Groundhog Day” all over again: new town, same routine. While the patriotic country tune kept pumping, the crowd of several hundred suddenly turned around en masse as Romney’s bus pulled up about 15 minutes late. It seems that like college parties, for presidential candidates, it’s all about showing up just a bit late — and making a cool entrance. Fittingly, Romney referred to the Obama administration as the “groundhog presidency,” because, the former Massachusetts governor said, “He keeps saying the same thing, but nothing ever changes.” Romney talked about the trips he used to take with his family as a child — including a visit to Florida’s Cypress Gardens — but you could feel the press tuning out as they waited for the obligatory recitation of the candidate’s favorite lines from “America the Beautiful.” Following a loss in South Carolina last week, Romney was making his final appearances before Tuesday’s crucial Florida vote and he seemed loose and spirited, perhaps thanks to the comfortable lead he opened up against rival Newt Gingrich in the polls as the primary approached. He left the audience with a stark message about the man he wants to ensure is a one-term president. “He didn’t cause the recession,” Romney said of President Obama. “But he made it worse.” MTV is on the scene in Florida! Mitt Romney Florida Supporters Feel The Momentum

‘I just really want to see some hope restored in America,’ one voter tells MTV News a day before Florida primary. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney greets supporters in Jacksonville Photo: Joe Raedle/ Getty Images JACKSONVILLE, Florida — One skipped school to be there, another took time out from her college courses and working at her two jobs to drop in, and both liked what they heard from Mitt Romney on Monday (January 30). One day before the primary in the pivotal swing state of Florida , which could finally cement his status as the leader of the pack in the Republican presidential nominating contest , a pumped-up Romney took the stage at a Caterpillar equipment dealership to speak to an enthusiastic crowd. His message of “real hope and change” resonated with Amy Gallogly, 23, a community college student who works at a tax service and an alarm company in the area. “I just really want to see some hope restored in American,” she said after the event wrapped as Romney shook hands and signed autographs while Kid Rock’s “Born Free” blasted from the speakers. “I’m just really pushing for any Republican candidate. … The one reason I really am pushing for Mitt Romney [though] is because I think he’s the one candidate who can beat Obama .” High school senior Tori Reiman, 18, came with her mom, who works in the real-estate business in the state with the nation’s highest foreclosure rate. “I’m kind of over Obama,” she said. “He’s not doing his job. He’s raising the taxes on the richer side of American, which I don’t believe is fair.” Asked why she came out to the event, Reiman said, “I believe in Mitt Romney and I believe in America.” Law student Eric Bast, 24, definitely picked up on Romney’s message of change, saying that he’s energized to participate in his first election. “I want to change it back,” said Bast, who recently registered to vote . American Idol to President Obama & Al Green: Sing For Us!

If you haven’t seen the video of President Obama singing Al Green at a fundraiser at New York City’s legendary Apollo Theater last week, you need to. No matter what you think of his views, the Prez proved with his riff on “Let’s Stay Together” that he’s got pipes! And we weren’t the only ones impressed. Friday, American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe Tweeted an official offer to the Commander in Chief that he can’t refuse. Or at least he shouldn’t: Obama Sings Al Green “@BarackObama we loved your vocal performance so much we’d love to invite you on to #AmericanIdol this Season for a duet with Al Green.” Now that would be the DVR moment of the decade. We’re gonna guess that Obama will cite scheduling conflicts and pass, but if you think about it, what better way to win over voters in an election year? Okay, perhaps a robust economy would be a bigger ballot box boost, but you get the idea. The guy’s vocal chops are legit and deserve a wider audience. President Obama in 2012?
