US and Russia announce deal to cut nuclear weapons

US President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev have agreed a new nuclear arms reduction treaty after months of negotiations. The final agreement came in a phone call between the two leaders. The deal replaces the 1991 Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expired in December. It will be signed in Prague on 8 April, the White House said. Both sides agreed to cut their arsenals last year, but disagreements on verification have held up a deal. In a speech in Prague last year Mr Obama set out his vision of moving towards a world without nuclear weapons. The US is said to have more than 2,000 deployed strategic nuclear weapons, while Russia is believed to have more than 2,500. Both sides agreed in July to reduce that number to between 1,500 and 1,675 each. added by: 02

As stars (and kids) gather for Nickelodeon’s 23rd Annual Kids’ Choice Awards Saturday, one unexpected honoree will stand head and shoulders above the rest: The First Lady of the United States! Michelle Obama will be honored for her “Let’s Move” campaign to cut down on childhood obesity, announced Nickelodeon, which has donated $3 million to it. “First Lady Michelle Obama has taken on one of this generation’s most pressing concerns: the health and wellness of our nation’s children,” stated Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President, Public Affairs and Chief of Staff at Nickelodeon. The First Lady will be deservingly honored Saturday . “Michelle’s willingness to work hard, influence others and her dedication to improving the nation is inspiring, and we are proud to honor her for her commitment to empowering kids and families to address this important issue.” Also attending? Glee star Lea Michele, Steve Carell, Chris Rock, Jackie Chan, Jonah Hill, Queen Latifah, David Spade, Dev Patel, Miranda Cosgrove and Shaun White. Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Apolo Anton Ohno are also scheduled to perform.

Biden drops an F-bomb for health care

Our Vice President loves to speak his mind. And overwhelmed with the significance of passing health care reform, he wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to tell the President exactly what he thought about the momentous occasion: “It's a big fucking deal.” Here's the video. I love this moment because it seems so Biden. He tells Obama it's a big deal and that doesn't seem to get through, so he re-emphasizes with an f-bomb. Of course, we at Current have long known how footloose and fancyfree the Vice President can be with his boss. We've been following their relationship through the hard-hitting documentary series with the best access in the free world: “Supernews”. Check out the job fair the two of them hosted, for example, in which the Vice President dressed as a clown and made fun of Canadians! Luckily for Mr. Biden, everyone seems to adore his antics.
