Cast member Chris Redd gave a hilarious Soulja Boy interpretation on Weekend Update and even announced his candidacy for the 2020 Presidential Election, “Man I got to fix this. You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to run for President. Yeah. ‘Soulja Boy Crank That 2020.’ Obama? Obama? Man, that dude been stealing my bars. ‘Audacity of Hope?’ That’s Soulja. That’s me.” Looks like Big Soulja did have the biggest comeback of the year.

T here are several historically Black colleges and universities across the country that have experienced financial woes , and celebrities are stepping up to save them. After learning that Bennett College—an all-women HBCU—was on the brink of losing its accreditation, actors Jussie Smollett and his brother Jake Smollett stepped in to help the institution, Essence reported. A total of $5 million is reportedly needed by February 1, 2019 in order to keep the school in good standing: https://t.co/oV1sFmPDll — ESSENCE (@Essence) December 24, 2018 According to the news outlet, the school—which was founded in 1873 and became a women’s institution in 1926—needs to raise $5 million by February 2019 to stay afloat. The Smolletts took it upon themselves to use their platforms to spread awareness about what’s happening at Bennett College and motivate individuals to pitch in and help save the school. Jussie posted a photo of both him and his brother donning shirts that read “Stand With Bennett” accompanied with a caption that read “In the 1930s we had 121 #HBCUs now we’re at 101. Don’t let us be down to 100 if #BennettCollege, who has made the education of black women a priority since 1926, closes its doors.” Bennett College President Dr. Phyllis Worthy Dawkins hopes that they can raise enough money to not only save the college from closing but keep the college’s doors open so that they can continue to educate, empower, and inspire leaders for generations to come. “We look forward to working with partners who understand that their investment supports the education of deserving young women whose potential is only limited by the opportunities we give them,” said Dawkins in a statement, according to the news outlet. “Our challenge is great. Our time is short. Our resolve is mighty.” The Smolletts aren’t the only celebrities who are showing their support for HBCUs and their students. Beyoncé generously donated thousands of dollars to fund scholarships for HBCU students. Most recently, the cast of “A Different World” presented a $100,000 check from Ford to Southwestern Christian College in Texas. Songstress Beyoncé ’s work has inspired college courses across the country, her hubby Jay Z was the subject of a course at Georgetown, and last year Jordan Peele ’s work was the focal point of a class at UCLA. The latest person to have a curriculum centered on her achievements and experiences is former first lady Michelle Obama , Black Enterprise reported. Mims—who served as the assistant director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans and is currently enrolled in the University of Virginia’s Educational Psychology doctorate program—was so inspired that she conceptualized a curriculum for young Black girls that intertwines Obama’s journey and key principles for success. For Mims, it’s all about representation. When young girls see themselves reflected in successful Black women it changes their perspective on life. “Reading Becoming was like sitting on the couch with your best friend and having one of those soulful conversations about life,” she told the news outlet. “Reading about how Michelle Obama felt unchallenged in elementary school, teased for the way she spoke, and noticed a difference in how she was perceived during adolescence was affirming. I disrupt the traditional practice of talking about Black girls in pejorative ways and center them and their unique experiences to study how we can support them.” She also added that there should be safe spaces for Black girls to discuss their challenges and how they can overcome them. Michelle Obama is nothing short of an inspiration. In fact, she recently topped Gallup’s “Most Admired Woman list ; edging out Hillary Clinton and Oprah Winfrey . Now, residents of Los Angeles can get that reminder during their daily commute; Signs honoring Barack Obama were installed on a stretch of the 134 Freeway this week. The route from State Route 2 in Glendale to Interstate 210 in Pasadena was completed this week, according to reports from USA Today , after being signed into law back in September 2017. Locals are known to love 44, but the placement is also a tribute to the period of time in Obama’s youth when he attended college at Occidental College in Eagle Rock from 1979 to 1981 and later lived in Pasadena. Barack Obama has been out of office for two years now, so it’s only right that he starts getting a few things named in his honor. Back in August, the city of Los Angeles also announced plans to rename Rodeo Road to Obama Boulevard. LA is really going all out here, huh?
