Rick Santorum Suspends Republican Presidential Campaign

‘Against all odds we won 11 states,’ Santorum said on Tuesday (April 10). By Gil Kaufman Rick Santorum at his press conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Photo: Jeff Swensen/ Getty Images After an improbable run that boosted him from a barely-considered fringe candidate a year ago to the last man standing to rival Mitt Romney
for the Republican presidential nomination, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum announced he was suspending his campaign on Tuesday (April 10). “We made the decision to get into this race at our kitchen table against all the odds and we made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting,” he said. The 12-minute afternoon press conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania featured Santorum surrounded by his family and backed by a flag as he re-iterated many of the themes of his campaign: the rebirth of American manufacturing, reforming Washington and a return to conservative values. “Against all odds we won 11 states, millions of voters, millions of votes,” he said. “We won more counties than all the other people in this race combined.” With his emphasis on American manufacturing front-and-center to the end, Santorum even joked about his now-infamous sweater vests, noting that he sourced them from an American company, Minnesota’s Bemidji Woolen Mills. The suspension removed the last major obstacle to Romney’s bid to become the uncontested front-runner in the race, paving the way for him to focus full-time on attacking President Obama. Santorum had positioned himself as the only true conservative left in the GOP field, sitting way behind the pack for much of 2011 as a wide field of other candidates, and would-be candidates, rose and fell before him, including Donald Trump, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry. In late 2011, he caught fire unexpectedly, though, narrowly winning the Iowa caucus
(after the fact), then winning 10 more states along the way, despite being vastly outspent and outmanned by Romney at every stop. The press conference came a day after three-year-old daughter Isabella was released from the hospital following her latest health scare, which took place on Friday and kept the family by her side all of Easter weekend. Bella suffers from the genetic condition Trisomy 18 and her hospitalization resulted in Santorum canceling his campaign events on Monday and Tuesday and speculation that he might be considering a suspension of his efforts. Romney released a statement praising his one-time foe, saying, “Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity.” Though the men traded harsh barbs during the campaign, it is expected that Santorum will fall in line and throw his support behind Romney in a bid to deny Obama a second term. With polls showing that he was on track to possibly lose in the April 24 primary in his home state of Pennsylvania — which would have been embarrassing and possibly hurtful to his political future — Santorum’s exit leaves Romney with just two remaining challengers. At press time neither Gingrich nor Congressman Ron Paul appears to present much of a threat, as they are far behind in the delegate count and in fundraising. Gingrich, who has won two primaries, conceded over the weekend that Romney is “far and away the most likely” nominee; libertarian Paul has yet to win a primary. Like Santorum, Romney still faces a serious gap with Obama when it comes to young voters (18-29), 22 million of whom voted in 2008. According to the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), Santorum was trailing among that demographic up until Super Tuesday, when his wins in the Alabama and Mississippi primaries helped vault him beyond youth-magnet Ron Paul. Even with that victory, though, Santorum still trailed Romney in terms of the overall youth vote count. Through Super Tuesday, the cumulative 2008 Democratic youth vote exceeded both the 2008 and 2012 count for the GOP, a figure that could prove important down the road for Romney. Current estimates have Romney with 645 of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination, with Santorum well behind at 252, Gingrich with 128 and Paul with 45. Romney still needs to reach the 1,144 figure to lock down the nomination, in addition to winning over the many still-unconvinced voters in the party’s conservative base. A Washington Post /ABC News poll released on Tuesday had Romney trailing Obama in a head-to-head race by a 51 to 44 percent margin. For Discussion: Should Marine Who Criticized President Barack Obama On His Facebook Page Be Dismissed???

Marine To Be Dismissed After Criticizing Obama On Facebook A Marine who criticized President Barack Obama on his Facebook page has committed misconduct and should be dismissed, a military board recommended late Thursday. The Marine Corps administrative board made the decision after a daylong hearing at Camp Pendleton for Sgt. Gary Stein. The board also recommended that Stein be given an other-then-honorable discharge. That would mean Stein would lose his benefits and would not be allowed on any military base. The board’s recommendations go to a general who will either accept or deny them. If the general disagrees with the board, the case could go to the secretary of the Navy. Stein’s lawyers argued that the 9-year Marine, whose service was to end in four months, was expressing his personal views and exercising his First Amendment rights. “We’re truly surprised and disappointed but it was an honor to fight for a hero like Sgt. Stein and every other Marine’s right to speak freely,” Stein’s defense attorney Marine Capt. James Baehr said. During the hearing, the prosecutor, Capt. John Torresala, said Stein went as far as superimposing images of Obama’s face on a poster for the movie “Jackass.” Torresala argued that Stein’s behavior repeatedly violated Pentagon policy that limits the free speech rights of service members, and said he should be dismissed after ignoring warnings from his superiors about his postings. The government submitted screen grabs of Stein’s postings on one Facebook page he created called Armed Forces Tea Party, which the prosecutor said included the image of Obama on the “Jackass” movie poster. Stein also superimposed Obama’s image on a poster for “The Incredibles” movie that he changed to “The Horribles,” the prosecutor said. Torresala also said anti-Obama comments by Stein that were posted on a Facebook page used by Marine meteorologists were prejudicial to good order and discipline, and could have influenced junior Marines. Stein’s security clearance was taken away and he has no future in the Marine Corps because he can’t do his job without that clearance, Torresala said. “The Marine Corps community views the command’s lack of action as some kind of knock on good order and discipline,” Torresala said. “Our own people are questioning why this Marine is not being held accountable.” Stein has said his opinions are his own and has put a disclaimer on his Facebook page saying so. His attorneys argued service members have a right to voice their opinions as long as they do not appear to be presenting their views as being endorsed by the military. They say the Pentagon policy is vague and military officials do not understand it. The Marine Corps has said it decided to take administrative action after Stein declared on Facebook that he would not follow orders from Obama and later clarified that statement saying he would not follow unlawful orders. Stein could face other-than-honorable discharge while seeing his rank reduced to lance corporal and losing his benefits. The nine-year veteran was set to finish his service in four months. He said he was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego last month and given a desk job with no access to computers. Stein said his statement about Obama was part of an online debate about NATO allowing U.S. troops to be tried for the Quran burnings in Afghanistan. In that context, he said, he was stating that he would not follow orders from the president if it involved detaining U.S. citizens, disarming them or doing anything else that he believes would violate their constitutional rights. Mitt Romney Sweeps Wisconsin, Maryland, D.C. Primaries

With more than half the delegates needed for nomination, Romney setting sights on President Obama. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney at an election-night rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Photo: Getty Images Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney took a big step toward locking down the GOP presidential nomination on Tuesday when he pulled off a clean sweep of the day’s three primaries. With decisive victories in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia, Romney appeared to finally vanquish his rivals as he increasingly turned his attention to President Obama. Romney won 42.5 percent of the vote in Wisconsin, outpacing his only remaining threat, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, who earned 37.6 percent. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich were well behind both men in all three contests. In Maryland, Romney took 49.1 percent to Santorum’s 28.9 and in Washington, D.C., Romney landed a commanding 70 percent to Paul’s 12 and Gingrich’s 11; Santorum was not on the ballot in D.C. “This has really been quite a night. We won a great victory tonight in our campaign to restore the promise of America,” Romney said. “President Obama thinks he’s doing a good job — I’m not kidding,” he told a crowd in Milwaukee while standing in front of a large American flag, according to the New York Times . “It’s enough to make you think that years of flying around on Air Force One, surrounded by an adoring staff of true believers telling you that you’re great and you’re doing a great job, it’s enough to make you think that you might become a little out of touch.” After once again slamming the president for creating what he deemed a “government-centered society” based on bloated White House policies, Romney promised his followers that he would preside over a different America if he wins in November. “The dreamers can dream a little bigger, the help wanted signs can be dusted off, and we can start again,” he said. “And this time we’ll get it right.” Romney now has 58 percent of the delegates needed to secure the nomination, but his slow, methodical march to the magic number of 1,144 is not quite over, as Santorum vowed that he would stay in the race through the April 24 primaries. Five states will vote on that day, including his home state of Pennsylvania, where Santorum believes he can put up a convincing victory that might pave the way to more wins in May. According to estimates, Romney has 648 delegates so far to Santorum’s 264. Even before Romney could celebrate, he got a taste of what the general election might feel like when President Obama singled him out for some criticism while speaking to a crowd of editors and reporters in Washington. Obama slammed Romney for supporting a GOP budget proposal that the president likened to “social Darwinism.” “He said that he’s ‘very supportive’ of this new budget,” Obama said of Romney, before seeming to mock his potential challenger’s one-percent pedigree. “And he even called it ‘marvelous,’ which is a word you don’t often hear when it comes to describing a budget … it’s a word you don’t hear generally.” He assailed the budget plan put forward by House Republicans for slashing funding for education and infrastructure in favor of more tax breaks for the wealthy. The fiery speech came on the same day that Obama clinched the uncontested Democratic presidential nomination with wins in all three states. With Santorum (not to mention Gingrich and Paul) showing no signs of leaving the GOP contest, pundits predicted that the road ahead for Romney could still be tough, as he must continue to beat back the other contenders in some Southern primaries in May while attempting to focus his fire on Obama. Sarah Palin on Today: Talking Politics, Getting Grilled By Matt Lauer

Sarah Palin appeared on Today this morning, first as a guest and then as a co-host, in what was a mostly enjoyable stint on the NBC morning show institution. Matt Lauer did ask her some tough questions, though nothing about how Levi Johnston got Sunny Oglesby pregnant . Hey, no journalist is perfect. The mood was jovial as Palin opened with a story about a stranger who, when she was headed to NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza, said she knew Palin was Tina Fey. Lauer’s interview with Palin about the Republican presidential race – voters in Wisconsin, Maryland, and D.C. vote today – quickly turned more serious. Kids’ Choice Awards Owned By Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift

Performances from Katy Perry and One Direction also stood out at Nickelodeon awards show. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber gets slimed at the Kids’ Choice Awards 2012 Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images Host Will Smith was joined Saturday (March 31) by a bevy of stars for Nickelodeon’s annual slime-fest, the Kids’ Choice Awards . The movie star and MC kicked off the night with a KCA-themed rap that included the first sliming of the night, when buckets of the famed goo fell on the audience, setting the tone for the fun-filled evening. The “Men In Black III” star promised that 2012 would include a record-breaking amount of slime, adding, “No one is safe from the slime.” That included Halle Berry, who was the first celeb to get slimed. The night’s first presenters certainly brought the kooky factor up a bit. Nicki Minaj was decked out in a candy-colored dress complete with a bustier made out of tickets and bubbles glued to her skirt, as she stood alongside “Hunger Games” star Josh Hutcherson. The pair handed out the first blimp to Favorite Musical Group winners Big Time Rush. Real-life couple and “The Amazing Spider-Man” stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone presented the award for Favorite Movie Actor. But before handing the blimp to Adam Sandler, Garfield told the room, “I feel like the luckiest guy in the world, ’cause I got to play my favorite superhero.” KCA first-timer and “Glee” star Chris Colfer got slimed when he hit the stage to present Selena Gomez the award for Favorite TV Actress. Perhaps Heidi Klum should have shared this advice with him first: Never trust anyone at the KCAs. Decked out in a two-piece, midriff-baring top and sparkly skirt, Gomez also won for Favorite Female Singer. “After no longer doing my show, knowing you guys still watch it means so much,” she said of her now-defunct Disney series “The Wizards of Waverly Place.” Katy Perry was the first performer of the night. Done up in medieval gear, she flew across the room to the stage, where she broke out into her latest hit single, “Part of Me.” Behind her, dancers were decked out in costumes from the same period. She served as a court performer, singing her scathing breakup track for the king and queen. The performance ended with Katy hitting the king with a pie. Perry also won a blimp for her work in “The Smurfs,” declaring, “The only reason I’m here today is because I’ve never gown up. I can’t wait to do ‘Smurfs 2.’ ” Kristen Stewart won for Favorite Movie Actress for “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” Beaming in blue lace, she said, “This is, like, the coolest awards show ever. I love Nickelodeon. I liked ‘Doug,’ ‘Rocco’s Modern Life.’ Awesome. I just have to say: Katy Perry’s armor was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.” Next up, the show got a bit serious when first lady Michelle Obama presented Taylor Swift with the Big Help Award. Swift won the special blimp in recognition of her philanthropic efforts, including work with U.S. tornado and flood survivors and various youth-related charities. “I’m so honored. I have always wanted to meet you; this is amazing. I am so honored to be receiving this award from the first lady of the United States. I am freaking out,” Swift said. “I’m really proud of all of you guys. I see you helping each other out. I think it’s important you know you are making a difference in this world.” Taylor Lautner has kicked enough butt and taken enough names on the big screen that he won the blimp for Favorite Butt Kicker. “This is amazing,” he told the room of screaming fans. “Robert, I’m sure you’ll be winning this award next year for ‘Iron Man 3’ and ‘The Avengers.’ ” That Robert he was referring to was presenter Robert Downey Jr., not Pattinson, obviously. After winning, he was forced to do 1,000 push-ups by Smith. His reward for completing the misson? Getting slimed. One Direction continued their U.S. takeover with their performance on the show. For “What Makes You Beautiful,” the guys wore all black-and-white while futuristic lights danced behind them. Proving that everyone is a One Directioner at this point, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez danced around in the audience and sang every word of the song, while the fivesome kept girls screaming with their frothy, lighthearted pop track. The big twist of the night came when Cee Lo Green was revealed as Will Smith’s nemesis, the man dubbed “Creepy Voice.” “Creepy Voice” had spent the night taunting Will, telling him how inadequate a host he is. His reasons? “I’ve always wanted to be slimed,” “The Voice” judge said. “My name is Cee Lo Green. Slime’s green. Slime me!” He didn’t get slimed, but he did get ice-cream-sundaed. Maybe next year, Cee Lo. After kicking Jaden and Willow out and accusing them of being “Creepy Voice,” he brought his performer kids back out to hand out Favorite Male Singer, the night’s last award. Justin Bieber, fresh from shooting his “Boyfriend” video , took the stage to accept his blimp. “Right now, I’ve been working really hard on my album, Believe. This album is our album. This [blimp] goes out to all the fans. I love you so much,” he said. In addition to the blimp, with Will by his side, Bieber got
