Adam Carolla: Women Aren’t Funny!

Adam Carolla, a comedian best known for The Man Show and whose career has sunk to a point where he appeared this year on Celebrity Apprentice , is in serious hot water for comments made to The New York Post . Simply put, Carolla told the newspaper that women are not funny. “They make you hire a certain number of chicks, and they’re always the least funny on the writing staff,” Carolla said of Hollywood. ‘The reason why you know more funny dudes than funny chicks is that dudes are funnier than chicks. If my daughter has a mediocre sense of humor, I’m just gonna tell her, ‘Be a staff writer for a sitcom. Because they’ll have to hire you, they can’t really fire you, and you don’t have to produce that much. It’ll be awesome.'” Was Carolla worried about backlash when he made this statement? No, he added. “When you’re picking a basketball team, you’ll take the brother over the guy with the yarmulke. Why? Because you’re playing the odds. When it comes to comedy, of course there’s Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Kathy Griffin – super-funny chicks. But if you’re playing the odds? No. “If Joy Behar or Sherri Shepherd was a dude, they’d be off TV. They’re not funny enough for dudes. What if Roseanne Barr was a dude? Think we’d know who she was? Honestly.” Of course, the backlash came instantly… and humorously, largely from female comedians. To wit, via Twitter: Lena Dunham : “Wait, Adam Carolla, is he the one who did the voice of the parrot in Aladdin??? He makes me giggle.” Jenny Johnson : “The biggest impact this whole Adam Carolla scandal has had is discovering 95% of people have no idea how to spell ‘Carolla.” Danielle Corsetto : “In an ironic twist, ‘women aren’t funny’ ranked number one funniest thing Adam Carolla has ever said.” Molly McAleer : “I don’t take Adam Carolla saying women aren’t funny seriously. He once told a caller on Loveline to eat a used tampon, y’know?” Which gender do YOU think is funnier?

‘Moneyball’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Brad Pitt baseball movie almost didn’t happen. By Eric Ditzian Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill in “Moneyball” Photo: Columbia Pictures As far as baseball books go, Michael Lewis’ “Moneyball” isn’t exactly an obvious candidate for Hollywood’s adaptation machine. It’s filled with geeky tales about the importance of obscure stats like “wins above replacement,” the founding of fantasy sports and the evolution of a guy named Bill James from factory worker to baseball deity. Yet at the center of the story is the quest of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane to turn his small-market, cash-poor ballclub into a perennial champion. And it’s that story that forms the heart of Brad Pitt’s “Moneyball,” an underdog sports narrative quite at home among its Hollywood antecedents. It almost didn’t happen. But like the 2002 A’s, “Moneyball” beat the odds and landed in theaters on Friday (September 23). Here, in cheat-sheet form, is the story of how it all came to pass. Spring Training The adaptation came together in late 2008, with Pitt taking on the Beane role , Steve Zaillian (“Schindler’s List,” “Gangs of New York”) signing on to pen the script and “Devil Wears Prada” helmer David Frankel attached to direct. Steven Soderbergh, though, soon stepped into the director’s chair (or, at least, he planned to; there’d be more roster shakeups in “Moneyball” land before cameras rolled). “My clearly stated goal is to set a new standard for realism in that [sports] world,” Soderbergh told MTV News in the spring of ’09. “I hope it sets a new standard. Hopefully, anybody who makes a sports movie from now on is going to have to grapple with this.” Struggling in the Big Leagues Production was slated to begin that summer, but Sony, concerned about the commercial viability of Soderbergh’s take , called for a directorial pinch hitter only days before the cinematic first pitch was to be thrown. Pitt remained hopeful. “My gut says yes,” Pitt told MTV News in August when asked whether “Moneyball” could see a ninth-inning rally. “[W]e’re still trying to re-mount it. I hope we get to do it soon.” It took a while, but Pitt’s prediction proved correct. “Capote” director Bennett Miller boarded the project that December, reportedly beating out “(500) Days of Summer” helmer Marc Webb for the gig. Aaron Sorkin rewrote the script and Jonah Hill signed on to play Beane’s assistant (a role loosely based on Paul DePodesta, now a player-development exec with the New York Mets). Hill was an unexpected pick for the dramatic role, but the actor laughed with us last year that he wouldn’t ruin the film. “I earned the part,” he said. “Every guy who is in their twenties and making movies was after that part, and it was a very tough thing. I’m really proud to have earned it, you know?” Play Ball Shooting began in the summer of ’10. It’d be a full year before the first trailer for the film hit the Web. Gone was a great deal of the baseball nerdery, as well as Soderbergh’s initial plan to present Bill James in the form of an animated narrator . Instead, Miller delivered a straightforward sports movie: Adversity! Triumph against the odds! More adversity! “These are guys that are working in an unfair game,” Pitt explained to us recently. “They are a team with no money trying to fight — it’s David vs. Goliath. How are they going to be competitive? How are they going to stand a chance? They can’t fight the other guys’ fight; they’re going to lose every time. These guys had to rethink it and rethink what they were doing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Moneyball.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The singer and her hubby, rodeo legend Ty Murray, are expecting their first child. By Jocelyn Vena Jewel and Ty Murray Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images These days it feels like all of Hollywood is expecting. With news breaking this week that both Marion Cotillard and Owen Wilson will soon be parents, singer Jewel has now announced that she too will be welcoming a bundle of joy. The singer confirmed the news to People.com . “I took a pregnancy test and it was positive!” explained Jewel, who is in her second trimester. “It was so hard to keep it a secret. I was worried I’d start throwing up on set [of my Bravo reality show, ‘Going Platinum’] and everyone would be like, ‘Oh, she’s pregnant.’ ” It’ll be the first child for Jewel and her husband, rodeo star Ty Murray, and the couple, who married in 2008 in the Bahamas, admit they’ve been wanting to be parents for a while now. “I have always been a workaholic, so I had to learn how to slow down and take care of myself in a different way,” she said about starting a family. “I’m trying to be in the moment and really enjoy my pregnancy. I feel really lucky.” Murray is equally enthusiastic about expanding their family. “We’re so excited to be expecting our first baby,” he said. “We always knew we wanted to have a child, and this time in our lives feels right.” The couple say they are currently remodeling their Texas ranch to accommodate their new baby. Jewel released an album of kids songs in 2009 called Lullaby and she says she now is working on a new collection of children’s tunes. Related Photos Celebrity Baby Bumps! Related Artists Jewel

Michael Douglas Says He’s Cancer Free

‘I think the odds are … that I’ve got it beat,’ the ‘Wall Street’ star announced in a ‘Today’ show interview. By Gil Kaufman Michael Douglas and Matt Lauer Photo: NBC Michael Douglas thinks he’s over the rough part. The 66-year-old “Wall Street” star spoke to “Today” show host Matt Lauer in an interview that aired on Tuesday morning (January 11) and said that after undergoing throat cancer treatment he thinks he’s out of the woods. “I think the odds are with the tumor gone and what I know about this particular type of cancer that I’ve got it beat,” Douglas said of his latest diagnosis, which comes about a half a year after revealing that he had the disease. “I have to check out on a monthly basis now to maintain. I guess there’s not a total euphoria. I’ll probably take a couple of months of getting checked out. But it’s been a wild six-month ride.” In his first TV interview since undergoing cancer treatment, the Oscar-winning actor described some of the side effects of the radiation therapy, which include a shutdown of his salivary ducts for a year or two and dry mouth that affects his sleep. He also initially lost more than 30 pounds, but has put almost half of that back on by, as he admits, “eating like a pig.” “I was gaunt,” he said of his appearance in paparazzi photos taken after the weight loss. “So I think [my father, Kirk Douglas,] was even concerned. And, yeah, it was not a lot of fun. It’s still not. [Photographers are] there every day.” But, given that his father is 94 and his mother is in her late 80s, Douglas said he feels like he’s got good, strong genes that he expects will keep him around a lot longer. “It’s put a timeline on my life,” he said. “I’m 66 now. You know, I’m fortunate I’ve got a mother who’s 88 — she’ll kill me — she may be 87. My father’s 94. So, you know, I feel good about those genes. But it’s definitely a third act. And so you’re a little more conscious of your time in how you choose to spend it.” He also lamented the intrusion of the paparazzi at such a difficult time, worrying that the images had an impact on the two young children he has with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones. “And I resent the amount of imposition on our children, too, because it used to be at least they would try to keep them out of that, and they don’t at all [now],” he said, adding that he suspects the tabloid photographers got some kind of “macabre” joy out of seeing him go down for his treatments. He did reveal, however, that he took his children with him to a few of the radiation treatments so they could see the “space age” equipment used to shrink his tumor. The health scare, Douglas said, made him appreciate his friends and family even more and hold them a bit closer than he did in the past. “All of a sudden the affection from my family, from my friends, and from my fans hit me at a much deeper level than I would have ever imagined before,” he explained. “And it gave me a really new appreciation of just how valuable, how precious good friends are and family.” He still has to undergo monthly checkups for three more years to be sure that the cancer is gone, but the odds likely are in his favor. The survival rate of patients with late-stage throat cancers is 50-80 percent, depending on the cause of the disease. Feeling bullish about his prospects, Douglas said he’s looking forward to making more movies. “Yeah, oh, absolutely,” he said about working again. Do you have a message for Michael Douglas?
