Shrek Forever After Tops US Box Office

The fourth installment in the Shrek Franchise was the top movie at the North American box office over the weekend. It took about $71.3million on its first three days on release. However, Shrek Forever After did not perform as well as its two previous films, Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third. Both of which had made more than $100million in their debut weekends. The spokesman for DreamWorks Animation admitted that the fourth movie’s takings were a little lower to what they have anticipated. Its chart-topping debut put an end to Iron Man 2’s two-week reign as box office champion in the US and Canada. The film Shrek Forever After is the first in the series to be shown in 3D featuring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz. Top 5 US box office films: 1. Shrek Forever After -$71.3m 2. Iron Man 2 – $26.6m 3. Robin Hood – $18.7m 4. Letters To Juliet – $9.1m 5. Inventors say BP ignoring oil spill ideas

Please Note: This post is actually 2 different points of view. The video represents BP and their explanation for micro managing the oil spill. (sry..that was a biased statement but i am not looking for a Pulitzer) The article is from the AP and is self explanatory. I have provided links for both and I really hope the video will keep running ok. This thing has been spewing poison into our eco-system for 35 days…in ungodly amounts. Somebody needs to wake the hell up. http://www.cnn.com/video/ ?/video/us/2010/05/24/intv.suttles.bp.oil.options.cnn NEW ORLEANS – A suggestion box or publicity stunt? BP has received thousands of ideas from the public on how to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, but some inventors are complaining that their efforts are getting ignored. Oil-eating bacteria, bombs and a device that resembles a giant shower curtain are among the 10,000 fixes people have proposed to counter the growing environmental threat. BP is taking a closer look at 700 of the ideas, but the oil company has yet to use any of them nearly a month after the deadly explosion that caused the leak. “They're clearly out of ideas, and there's a whole world of people willing to do this free of charge,” said Dwayne Spradlin, CEO of InnoCentive Inc., which has created an online network of experts to solve problems. BP spokesman Mark Salt said the company wants the public's help, but that considering proposed fixes takes time. “They're taking bits of ideas from lots of places,” Salt said. “This is not just a PR stunt.” BP said Wednesday it hopes to begin shooting a mixture known as drilling mud into the blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico by Sunday. The “top kill” method involves shooting heavy mud into crippled equipment on top of the well, then aiming cement at the well to permanently keep down the oil. Even if it works it could take several weeks to complete. “This is all being done at a depth of 5,000 feet and it's never been done at these depths before,” said Doug Suttles of BP PLC, which leased the rig that exploded April 20 off the coast of Louisiana. If the top kill effort fails, BP is considering a “junk shot,” which involves shooting knotted rope, pieces of tires and golf balls into the blowout preventer. Crews hope they will lodge into the nooks and crannies of the device to plug it. About 70 BP workers are taking more suggestions at a tip line center in Houston. The company plans to test one idea from actor Kevin Costner — a centrifuge device to vacuum up the oil — but that was not delivered through the suggestion-box system. Gerald Graham, a marine environmental consultant and oil spill response expert from Victoria, British Columbia, said he suggested a similar idea at the end of April to the joint incident command center run by BP, government agencies and Transocean Ltd., which owned the rig. The command center had him forward the idea to NOAA, which didn't respond. In the weeks before BP hooked up the tube, it tried but failed to use a four-story concrete-and-metal box to funnel the oil into a pipe and to the surface. Salt said ideas for stopping the leak “have to be taken through loads of different stages” before BP can try to use them. “We're dealing with things at a depth that has never been done before. They have to go through lots of vigorous tests,” he said. Spradlin, the InnoCentive CEO, denounced BP's call for help as a “publicity maneuver.” His Massachusetts-based company challenged its Web-connected network of scientists, engineers, academics and other professionals to come up with possible solutions to stop the spill. Hundreds of ideas have poured in, but the company says BP has not responded. Ideas submitted through InnoCentive include spreading oil-eating bacteria and dropping bombs to implode the leaking well. Even the director of EPA's Gulf of Mexico Program Office is waiting to see if his idea will get used. Bryon O. Griffith worked in his spare time to develop an umbrella-style plug that could be deployed inside the damaged pipe, an idea that has been placed on a short list for consideration. BP has fielded some 60,000 calls from the public that led to 10,000 tips. About 2,500 people sent in forms spelling out their ideas in greater detail, and BP advanced 700 to the next phase. “And then we ask, is this something new?” BP spokesman David Nicholassaid. “Can we incorporate it into our stuff, or is there an overlap? There hasn't been one that's come from that system that's come all the way.” Costner, the “Waterworld” and “Field of Dreams” actor, has invested more than $24 million in developing the centrifuge invention, along with business partner John Houghtaling II of New Orleans. On Tuesday, Houghtaling said BP has agreed to test the devices, which can be dropped into the oil spill and separate water from oil, storing the petroleum in tanks. The smallest weighs 150 pounds (68 kilograms); the largest 4,500 pounds (2,040 kilograms). “It's like a big vacuum cleaner,” Houghtaling said. “These machines are ready to be employed. The technology is familiar to the industry.” It's not just BP that's been receiving ideas. “You name it, it's been suggested. At least 15 times a day we get something about exploding the well — bombs, nuclear bombs, torpedoes,” said Coast Guard Senior Chief Steve Carleton. He said he receives about a dozen emails a day with a link to a YouTube video of a man using hay to sop up oil. “Think of a giant shower curtain at 5,000 feet that goes to the bottom of the ocean,” Badger said. Badger said the proposal hasn't received much response from BP despite a series of attempts to discuss it with company officials. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37241470/ns/business-oil_and_energy/page/2/ added by: onemalefla

British screenwriter Simon Monjack dead just after 5 months of his wife Brittany Murphy death.

Actress Murphy's Husband Found Dead Brittany Murphy's Husband Simon Monjack Cause Of Death Unknown Monday, May 24, 2010 LOS ANGELES — The husband of Brittany Murphy was found dead at his Los Angeles home late Sunday, five months after the Hollywood actress died, police said. Firefighters responding to an emergency call found British screenwriter Simon Monjack dead at the Hollywood Hills residence, police spokesman Sgt. Louie Lozano said. The preliminary cause of the 39-year-old Monjack's death is natural causes, he told The Associated Press. “We concluded there no signs of foul play or any criminal activity involved,” said Sgt. Alex Ortiz, another police spokesman. Ortiz said that the Los Angeles Coroner's Office was taking over the investigation because criminal activity had been ruled out, and would provide more details later on the death and circumstances surrounding it. Firefighters rushed to the home after receiving a call from a female occupant at 9:40 p.m. Sunday, but Ortiz said he didn't know who then name of the caller. At his wife's funeral in December, a visibly emotional Monjack talked about their relationship and called her his best friend and soul mate. The two married in 2007. He had said that they had been planning a family and contemplating a move to New York. Murphy, best known for her major roles in “Clueless,” ''Girl Interrupted,” and “8 Mile” in 2002, died Dec. 20, at age 32 after collapsing in her home. The Los Angeles County coroner's office concluded Murphy's death was accidental, but likely preventable. The coroner's report said that the medications found in her system were consistent with treatment of a cold or respiratory infection. Monjack and Murphy's mother had reported the actress was ill with flulike symptoms in the days before her death. An autopsy found no evidence that Murphy abused drugs. Investigators found numerous prescription medications in the actress' home. Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. A mouse in the (White) House? Mystery rodent disrupts Obama press conference

President Barack Obama was upstaged by a rodent as he spoke on Wall Street legislation. Mr Obama had just begun a Rose Garden statement lauding the end of a US Senate filibuster on his financial overhaul when a rodent dashed out of the bushes to his right, just outside the Oval Office. As photographers snapped away in the sun-drenched garden, the creature scurried straight past the grey podium with the presidential seal and made a bee-line for another set of bushes to Mr Obama's left. It's not clear if the president could even see the animal, but he didn't show any reaction. And he concluded his statement minutes later, returning to his office without answering a few shouted questions on other topics. Opinion was divided on the identity of the rodent. 'I would partially rule out rat,' said Russell Link, a wildlife biologist who works for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. 'That's due to the lack of a tail that is typically equal to body length.' After viewing a photograph of the surprising scurry, Mr Link said: 'My suspicion is it's a vole, commonly called a 'meadow mouse' out our way.' The question is: which one is the pipsqueak? Come to your own conclusions. added by: crystalman

Rima Fakih: The Politically Correct Miss USA?

Miss USA Rima Fakih instantly became the center of controversy after she won the crown last weekend, thanks to some of her stripper pole champion photos. That wasn’t enough to get her title stripped, however, and her reign has begun. Much to the dismay of some critics upset about her Muslim/Arab background. While the contestant herself has spoken little about this, stressing that her family observes both Muslim and Christian holidays, others have been very vocal. Daniel Pipes, who publishes a right-leaning blog on Middle Eastern affairs, pointed to a supposed “surprising frequency of Muslims winning beauty pageants.” While “they are all attractive,” Pipes, a former board member of the U.S. Institute for Peace, said they “make me suspect an odd form of affirmative action.” Pipes didn’t theorize how shadowy beauty-pageant fixers might be greasing the skids for Rima Fakih or contestants, but other political bloggers went further. Did Miss USA Rima Fakih benefit from political correctness? “Miss Hezbollah is now Miss USA,” declared conservative radio talk show host Debbie Schlussel, saying Fakih’s Lebanese relatives had ties to the terrorist organization. Schlussel also said Fakih received financial backing from Hezbollah supporter Imad Hamad and wrote off her win to a “politically correct, Islamo-pandering climate.” Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin saw a conspiracy, too – though generic rather than Muslim-specific this time. Malkin mocked Fakih as a “gaffetastic” contestant. While Fakih bungled her answer about birth control, runner-up Morgan Elizabeth Woolard of Oklahoma was asked for her views on Arizona’s recent immigration law. That question drew boos from the crowd before the judge – actor Oscar Nunez of The Office – could even finish getting it out, but Woolard handled it extremely well. Still, Fox & Friends host Gretchen Carlson suggested that Woolard’s conservative-leaning informed opinion was enough for the judges to exercise political correctness. Is that why Fakih won the crown over a blonde from Oklahoma? She will keep her crown regardless, but the controversy continues to swirl regarding her victory.

Lee DeWyze Spun Teenage Rebellion Into ‘American Idol’ Gold

‘High schools don’t necessarily have courses that tap into that kind of talent,’ Dean Patricia Tedaldi-Monti recalls of ‘Idol’ finalist. By Gil Kaufman Lee DeWyze Photo: Amy Silverman MT. PROSPECT, Illinois — You wouldn’t think so by looking at him on “American Idol,” but there was a time when Lee DeWyze was a teenage rebel. Though he’s shown a quiet, respectful demeanor in his climb into the “Idol” top 3, like many teens, DeWyze struggled with authority in high school and, according to those who knew him at the time, his headstrong determination might be responsible for setting him on a path to potential musical stardom. “Lee was the first student we had, and maybe the only student, who said, ‘I can’t do this, I can’t do this high school the way it’s set up, I need to go somewhere else,’ ” recalled Dr. Patricia Tedaldi-Monti, dean of students at Prospect High School, where Lee attended from ninth grade until halfway through senior year. It wasn’t that he couldn’t hack the academic work, she said, it was just that Lee was struggling to fit into the regimented rules of the school. If anything, she was impressed at the maturity he showed in expressing his frustration with traditional schooling. “He had music going through his head and … high schools don’t necessarily have courses that tap into that kind of talent, which is unfortunate,” she said. “So I kind of say shame on us. You know, we didn’t have the ‘I Want To Be a Rock Star’ course.” Tedaldi-Monti said DeWyze was not involved in any of the school’s musical programs and she never saw him bring his guitar to school, but it was obvious even then that he was focused on pursing his dream. “Like many kids that come to our school, [Lee] was full of energy and ideas,” said Dan Gentry, a teaching assistant at Forest View Alternative School, the high school DeWyze attended after leaving Prospect High. Gentry said he tried repeatedly to encourage Lee to come up with a fallback career in case music didn’t work out. But even at 17, DeWyze resisted , saying he was determined to make it. “On his first interview with ‘Idol,’ he said, ‘I am music, that’s all I really know,’ and I thought back to when I talked to him, and I [had] said, ‘You know, you need a fallback career,’ and he didn’t have one,” Gentry said. Like Tedaldi-Monti, Gentry had fond memories of Lee tapping out a beat on his desk or leg and always humming or singing a song he was working on. “He said, ‘Then I don’t have one. Music is my life.’ ” Although he worried that Lee was limiting himself, Gentry said he couldn’t be more proud now that DeWyze has made it, and he uses his former student’s “Idol” run as a way to motivate his current students. An assistant dean at Forest View Alternative, Dave Winsauer, said he always tries to discourage kids from leaving school before graduation — DeWyze reportedly quit Forest View just shy of graduation — but he could see Lee’s determination and hoped for the best. “Lee’s kind of an old soul,” Winsauer said. “Talking to Lee’s not like talking to a kid. Even when he was here … I mean, he had his moments … but a lot of times you could have a pretty serious conversation with him. And you knew he was listening and taking it all in and trying to do the best that he could.” There may be no one who knows the ins and outs of DeWyze’s progression better than Amy Silverman, the Special Education coordinator at Buffalo Grove High School. Silverman met Lee in the summer of 2003, when she was an instructor on a 10-day Upward Bound trip to Wisconsin and Michigan. “Lee and I kind of hit it off,” Silverman remembered. She has helped coordinate DeWyze’s recent homecoming activities , as well as weekly viewing parties and the sales of DeWyze T-shirts for a local charity. “He did bring his guitar with him and he pretty much ended up sitting in the passenger seat … There were a lot of hours on the road. And he was entertaining us with his guitar at the time.” (Silverman’s office is a warehouse of classic photos of Lee strumming his guitar.) DeWyze had only picked up the instrument a year or two earlier, and Silverman said she was impressed with how well he played considering he’d had no formal training. A few months later, while she was teaching at Forest View Alternative, the program’s director brought Lee around and he ended up in her classroom for the next year. Silverman and another instructor bought Lee his first microphone a short time later, and Silverman recalled seeing him use it during one of his first public performances in the basement of a diner. “Him and a couple high school buddies [were] sitting in the meat locker,” she said, describing the scene. “There’s two teachers and a bunch of high school kids … smashed potatoes and tomatoes all over the floor. And there’s Lee playing, having a good old time.” From banging out a song on the piano at her parents’ house to jamming on the drums in her basement with her kids, DeWyze, Silverman said, is constantly surprising her with his musical abilities. Though she couldn’t go into specifics, she said, like a lot of teens, Lee went through some “stuff” in high school. “Lee was never mean or nasty,” she said of the 24-year-old singer, whom she described as shy and humble. “He was never doing illegal things; he was never being harmful or hurtful. Lee liked to argue, Lee liked to push buttons. He liked to push my buttons. Lee was very smart, so he would challenge the system to make sure his voice was heard.” Holding up one of the handful of Lee-shirts her students are wearing in support of DeWyze, Tedaldi-Monti recalled the day the soft-spoken teenager came into her office before leaving the school and told her, “I’m going to be a rock star. “And you [and my other teachers] are going to be in the front row, and I’m going to be playing a really big concert.” She laughed, recalling that she told him, “Well, stay in touch, because I’d like to see that really big concert.” And though she counseled him to keep reaching for his dreams while planning for a backup, Lee’s promise is now coming true. “And so, it is going to happen,” she said proudly. “He’s a rock star.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
