So said Deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders earlier this week. Fast forward a couple days… and Donald Trump has posted what may be his most ridiculous and controversial Tweet to date; which, we know, is saying A LOT. In the video below, however, which the President of the United States shared on his social media account on Saturday morning, Trump has edited an appearance he made for the WWE back in 2007. In the footage, he is beating up on the CNN logo, continuing his feud against the cable news network and directly contracting the Sanders quote above. If this isn't an encouragement of violence against the press, we're not sure what is. This is the fourth straight day Trump has used the most powerful platform on the planet to rail against the media, following a bizarre rant against Morning Joe co-host Mika Brzezinski . Yearbook quotes used to just be little cute ways of being remembered or sharing jokes with friends. Now, in the age of social media, many students hope to be able to share their sense of humor or their ingenuity with thousands of people who never attended their school. Sometimes, it works, and their photo and quote get shared all across the world. One student’s yearbook photo has gone viral for making a hilarious point about sexist dress codes. When Tori DiPaolo tweeted this photo from the yearbook, she included a caption. “Tori: 1; Dress Code: 0.” She wasn’t just congratulating herself for an entertaining quote that poked fun at the hypocrisy of school photos that bare those scandalous shoulders when the school itself bans them. She’s apparently waged a lengthy battle against the school’s outrageously sexist dress code policies. “Over the past four years, myself and many of my friends have received dress code violations for clothes that were nowhere near inappropriate.” That’s all too common. And while many students are quick to blame teachers for reporting them for their “offenses,” they should realize that most teachers only do so for fear of getting into trouble if they don’t report dress code violations. “I became a bit infamous around school for fighting the administration about dress code, so I figured I’d use my senior quote as one final jab.” Great callbacks to your reputation are a great way to use a yearbook quote. Second only to the folks who use their yearbook quotes to come out of the closet. “I just found it funny that the outfits for senior portraits technically violated the dress code by exposing our shoulders, so I saw my opportunity and ran with it.” Funny, yes … but not funny haha , you know? Dress codes can be especially onerous in the south, where soaring temperatures can combine with humidity to make even a tee shirt feel like its smothering its wearers. But no matter the location, dress codes are clearly and aggressively based on gender discrimination. “It’s all based on sexism, and it is completely unreasonable.” She’s not pulling that out of nowhere. So much of dress codes has to do with the idea that a girl’s bare shoulders or, gasp, if her tee shirt rides up, will distract the boys in the classroom. You know, because shoulders and the small of your back have magic powers that force boys to stop paying attention. One of my favorite anecdotes about girls responding to stupid sexist dress code enforcement was a girl who was told that her bra strap was showing so she needed to change outfits who then reached under her shirt and removed her bra. All the while without breaking eye contact with the teacher. Not all heroes wear capes. Or bras. “There have been a number of incidents where I was called into the office due to what I was wearing. Whether it was my bra strap showing, or my midriff being a quarter inch exposed, administration always gave me a problem.” Pulling her out of class and wasting her time when she could have been learning. Shame on them. Like, the idea of a dress code makes sense, but basically you should just need to wear clothing that wouldn’t get you banned from Instagram or, like, a McDonald’s. That’s just part of life. Instead, students — most of whom are in the middle of growth spurts and many of whom may not come from families who can afford to be picky about clothes — are expected to go above and beyond. Because apparently certain parts of the human arm are just too darn sexual. (But in ways that only impact boys) Policies are inconsistently enforced, so a girl might only get in trouble for her attire after having worn it a dozen times before, thinking that it wasn’t a problem. The most insidious part of how dress codes are enforced is that, in case she might distract boys from their educations, girls are called out of class or even sent home. Which effectively prioritizes the educations of hypothetical boys who lack basic self-control skills. The fact that girls are supposed to be responsible for their male classmates’ educations is ludicrous, but it’s enshrined in countless dress codes across the country. That kind of thinking is only a few steps below “that witch hexed me into lusting after her!” DiPaolo isn’t the only students or former student to have expressed these concerns or fought this battle. There have been viral stories, like that parent of a female student who invited the school’s principal to go shopping with them to see how absurd the dress code was an how difficult it was to meet. There are adults fighting similar battles against what’s considered inappropriate for grown women vs what men are allowed to do. There are even cases where men are directly impacted — right now in Europe, there are numerous men wearing skirts to protest their companies’ bans on wearing shorts during soaring temperatures. Though, honestly, skirts have to be way more comfortable. Maybe they’ll stick with them. And maybe society should care a little less about how people decorate their meat prisons.
James T. Hodgkinson has been identified as the man who opened fire with a semiautomatic weapon on Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia. As previously reported, the incident took place around 7 a.m. on a baseball field where Republican Congressmen were taking batting and fielding practice. Five people were reportedly injured in the attack, most prominent among then Representative Steve Scalise from Louisiana . He’s been listed in stable condition and his office confirmed that Scalise was in “good spirits” upon wheeled in for surgery at a local hospital. Rand Paul was among those present during the attack and described the baseball field as a “killing field” during an interview on Morning Joe . He said the death toll would have been unimaginable if not for the swift actions of Capitol Police. Added Congressman Mo Brooks, who estimates that Hodgkinson fired at minimum 50 rounds before authorities took him out. “I see a rifle… I hear another blam… at the same time I heard Steve Scalise scream. He was shot… It sure as heck wasn’t an accident. He was going after elected officials.” It has since been confirmed that Hodgkinson asked someone close to the baseball field whether the man playing on it were Republicans or Democrats. As of 9:45 a.m. EST, Steve Scalise was in stable condition and entering surgery following a heinous attack orchestrated by James T. Hodgkinson. “We may have our differences, but we do well, in times like these, to remember that everyone who serves in our nation’s capital is here because, above all, they love our country,” President Trump said in a statement, adding: “We can all agree that we are blessed to be Americans, that our children deserve to grow up in a nation of safety and peace, and that we are strongest when we are unified and when we work together for the common good.” “Please take a moment today to cherish those you love, and always remember those who serve and keep us safe. God bless them all, God bless you, and God Bless America.” The President also confirmed that James T. Hodgkinson is dead from the injuries he sustained upon exchanging gunfire with officers. This is what we know about James T. Hodgkinson: – He was a 66-year old resident of Belleville, Illinois. – He belonged to a number of anti-Republican groups, including one called “Terminate the Republican Party.” – He was a licensed home inspector from 1994 to 1997 and also from 2003 through 2016. – Two days ago, Hodgkinson shared an angry tweet about President Trump on Facebook. It reads as follows: I Want to Say Mr. President, for being an ass hole you are Truly the Biggest Ass Hole We Have Ever Had in the Oval Office. – He has been arrested or cited for such offenses such as: Failing to obtain electrical permits, damaging a motor vehicle, resisting a peace officer, eluding police, criminal damage to property, driving under the influence and assorted traffic violations. Hodgkinson also volunteered for the Presidential campaign of Senator Bernie Sanders in 2016. Upon learning this piece of information, Sanders released the following statement: “I am sickened by this despicable act. Let me be as clear as I can be: “Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms.” Law enforcement officials say there’s no reason to believe the assailant had ties to international terrorism. Medical Examiner Deems Student’s Death A suicide Let’s just start by saying that any time a black person is found hanging — it’s suspicious. You may have heard about the case of 20-year-old Kendra Shanice Reid, a sophomore at WSSU in North Carolina who was found hanging at a park on April 28th. The medical examiner recently ruled her death a suicide. According to Winston-Salem Jourdal reports , Reid died from asphyxiation by hanging, according to her death certificate. Her body was found hanging in a wooded area of Finch Park shortly after 9 a.m. on April 28. The public park at 15 Paul Beck Road is just outside of Lexington, where Reid is from. Larry James, the Davidson County medical examiner and the county’s director of emergency services, ruled Reid’s death as a suicide. James said no autopsy was performed as a medical examiner can forego the autopys if death is determinable by an external examination. Some people attempted to link Reid’s death to a video circulating on Facebook, but Reid’s mother Sophia Giles claims those rumors are not true. In response to James’ suicide ruling, the Atlanta chapter of Black Lives Matter has released the following statement: As President of Black Lives Matter Greater Atlanta we are compelled to express our outraged of the senseless death of our dear sister Kendra Shanice Reid 20, who was found hanging in a park. We are deeply saddened and shocked to learn that yet another black body is lifeless. Kendra Reid was a 20 year old sophomore student at Winston-Salem State University in Lexington. She was loved by her community, her school and of course naturally by her family. After learning that Larry James, the county’s medical examiner ruled that the cause of death was a suicide. We know that couldn’t have been any further from the truth. Kendra was full of life, she loved her family, and she was an active member on campus and a member of the WSSU Marching Band who looked forward in graduating. We expect second investigation to be conducted by an private independent examiner, and anticipate a thorough full criminal investigation to be launch by either The Department of Justice’s Office of Civil Rights and The FBI. The black community in Lexington has little to no faith in Lexington Police Chief Mark Sink and his ability to execute a fair and complete investigation.
