The coming-of-age tale of a talented teen comics illustrator battling cancer, Death of a Superhero premiered to acclaim and a swift acquisition deal last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. Now, roughly a month away from its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, that event’s distribution offshoot Tribeca Film has given a first peek at Superhero ‘s American poster to Movieline. Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Andy Serkis star in director Ian FitzGibbon’s drama, which the festival program guide describes as an “exceptionally honest drama about discovering life, love, and death”; reviewing the film at Toronto, Variety critic John Anderson praised “the way it swings between toon and live-action characters, a daredevil trapeze act that keeps it from succumbing to mawkishness.” Superhero debuts April 17 on cable VOD, iTunes, Amazon and Vudu, then splashes down at Tribeca before a limited theatrical roll-out commences May 4 in Seattle. St. Patrick’s Day was not exactly lucky for Nicolas Cage, whose aromatic new thriller Seeking Justice bowed in 231 theaters to a gravely underwhelming $260,000 . That would make for a per-screen average of $1,125 and change — by far the worst opening of Cage’s 30-year career. The PSA “beats” that of last year’s little-seen disaster Trespass , which nabbed $1,682 in 10 theaters. (N.B. That one remains co-star Nicole Kidman’s worst-ever opening.) Actor was arrested in Washington, D.C., outside the Sudanese embassy. The Oscar nominee was taken into custody outside the Sudanese embassy. According to MSNBC , the group was protesting Sudan’s blockage of food and aid from entering the Nuba Mountains and aimed to bring attention to the treatment of the people in that area of Sudan. His father, journalist Nick Clooney, was also arrested, according to MSNBC, as well as Martin Luther King III, NAACP President Ben Jealous, Rep. Jim McGovern and Rep. Jim Moran and former Rep. Tom Andrews. Clooney and the other protesters knew that, because the embassy is private property, they would be arrested if they refused to move. MSNBC reports that the protesters were warned three times before police moved in. The group reportedly held a sign that read, “Sudan: Stop Weapons of Mass Starvation.” He told the large crowd at the protest, “We need immediate humanitarian aid into Sudan before it becomes the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.” He asked “the [Sudanese] government in Khartoum to stop randomly killing its own innocent men, women and children. Stop raping them, and stop starving them.” According to People.com , the group was then taken to a Secret Service van. “He’s being charged currently with disorderly crossing of a police line, which is a misdemeanor and he will be transported to the second district of the Metropolitan Police Department for processing,” Max Milien, spokesman for the Secret Service, told the site, noting that Clooney was being cooperative. “They were protesting the violence committed by the government of Sudan on its own innocent men, women and children,” Clooney’s rep said in a statement. “They were demanding they allow humanitarian aid into the country before it becomes the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.” The actor has been trying to bring change to the area, even meeting with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Secretary Hillary Clinton and President Obama in the Oval Office on Thursday. One day before, he attended the White House state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron. He is expected to appear on “Hardball with Chris Matthews” on Friday.
These fools were trying to get it poppin by any means necessary: The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal review of operations after a maximum-security inmate crawled into the cell of a female prisoner for a sexual tryst. Sheriff Kevin Joyce said during a press conference Monday that Arien L’Italien, 23, of Biddeford, was spotted early Saturday morning by a corrections officer as L’Italien tried to get back to his cell block after a consensual encounter with inmate Karla Wilson. L’Italien is being held on federal charges of attempted murder of a federal officer and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was arrested in January following a shootout on Mellen Street with the U.S. Marshals’ Violent Offender Task Force. He was being sought by the task force in connection with a New Year’s Day stabbing in Biddeford. Wilson, a 25-year-old from Portland, is awaiting trial on four counts of gross sexual assault and two counts of aggravated assault. Joyce said L’Italien was out of his cell for about an hour before he was spotted early Saturday morning. L’Italien made his bed to look as if it was occupied and used some kind of material to prevent the lock of his cell from latching properly, Joyce said. Wilson also used material to keep her cell lock open, the sheriff said. He said officers later were able to manipulate a cell lock to stay open using paper towels and a credit card. Joyce said L’Italien and Wilson, who knew each other, somehow arranged their tryst using the jail’s ventilation system. He said that likely involved other prisoners passing messages. The sheriff said he was particularly concerned about the security breach because of the danger L’Italien – or any inmate unexpectedly out of a cell – poses to corrections officers. “That’s a huge issue. This guy is not a good guy, that’s why he’s in here,” Joyce said. The internal investigation is being conducted to see if any policies were violated and what policies should be changed as a result of the incident. Joyce said it is too soon to say if any corrections officers will be disciplined. Joyce said L’Italien and Wilson will likely face disciplinary action at the jail, but not criminal charges. By Eric Ditzian Julianne Moore and Ed Harris in “Game Change” Photo: HBO Films Before I checked out “Game Change,” HBO’s Sarah Palin-focused retelling of the 2008 presidential election, I handed my screener over to a politically obsessed MTV News colleague. The next morning, he popped into my office and declared, “It was well-acted!” — which seemed like an odd way to lead off the conversation. I expected him to burst through my door, laughing about what a kook Palin is, or wondering why producers didn’t get Tina Fey to play the one-time vice presidential nominee, or waxing poetic about the “hopey, changey” circus that was Barack Obama’s romp through the general election. But, no: well-acted. When I stretched out on the couch for my own viewing a few days later, I finally grasped what my coworker was getting at: The performances in “Game Change” are what separate the film from fluffy caricature or partisan hackery into a compelling, if debatably accurate, piece of current event-tinged pop culture. Julianne Moore manages to present a Palin that transcends mimicry and leaves a viewer (or, at least, this viewer) vacillating between sympathy and exasperation. As chief John McCain campaign advisor Steve Schmidt, Woody Harrelson simply kicks ass, doling out sage advice and f-bomb-heavy attacks with equal aplomb — exactly how I imagine political insiders do it in real life (or, perhaps, just on “The West Wing”). Of the major players, only Ed Harris’ portrayal of McCain himself comes off as a little too much of an “SNL” imitation, his robotic physicality less reminiscent of the Arizona senator than of C-3PO. Nonetheless, all this combines to make “Game Change,” in the best tradition of historical dramas, a tense affair as you sit waiting to find out how it all will end, even as you know exactly what in fact transpired. That’s not to say this film is high art, or even particularly great: It’s not, and it isn’t. Problems abound — from hokey, no-one-honestly-utters-such-patriotic-nonsense dialogue to the enduring question about veracity — but in the end, “Game Change” is gripping throughout, because it’s “well-acted.” Many reviewers agree with that sentiment — though not all. Here’s what critics are saying about the HBO film, which premieres at 9 p.m. Saturday: The Performances “McCain comes off close to saintly, with Harris lending him a grave bafflement over Obama’s success. … Harrelson portrays Schmidt as a man who truly believes that all McCain needs to push him to victory is a little sizzle. … The film, obviously, belongs to Moore, who works hard to make Palin not so much fatally ambitious as one of those naturally confident people who believe that confidence and faith are the most important ingredients of success; ability or even competence can be learned on the job.” — Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times The Spin From the Right “Moore portrays Palin as a Manchurian Candidate for the extreme right who is activated by a phone call from the McCain campaign. Place your bets. Or I can just wake you when it’s April, your call. 4. Safe House Gross: $7,200,000 ($108,200,000) Screens: 2,533 (PSA $2,820) Weeks: 4 (Change: -34.1%) I can only imagine the back-and-forth between Denzel Washington’s WME team and Ryan Reynolds’s CAA crew this morning as they struggle to take primary credit for their stars’ stunning collaborative success. If I didn’t know any better, I’d just attribute the whole phenomenon to Harvey Weinstein, because what triumphs hasn’t he wrought in the last seven days? 5. Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds Gross: $7,000,000 ($25,745,000) Screens: 2,132 (PSA $3,283) Weeks: 2 (Change: -55.1%) Tyler Perry is nothing if not consistent, on track for another mid-$30 million performer sans the Madea muumuu. He’d argue that a wider release would sweeten the box office, and for this one in particular I’d agree — though I’d rather simply see him split the franchise difference and attempt Why Did I Get Married 3-D . SMH: Bail was set at $10 million this morning for a woman arrested by Philadelphia police and charged with injecting another woman with silicone in an illegal buttocks enhancing procedure. Padge Victoria Windslowe, 42, who has been linked to a death of a British woman following a similar procedure a year ago, also must surrender her passport, the District Attorney’s Office said. Windslowe must post $1 million to get released on bail. A transgender “gothic hip-hop artist” known as the “Black Madam,” Windslowe was arrested Wednesday night at an East Germantown home where she was to host a “pumping party,” police said.
