David Letterman Again Bashes Obama’s Vacations

David Letterman for at least the second time in eight days mocked Barack Obama for spending so much time on R&R During his “Late Show” opening monologue, the host quipped, “The President’s been busy, he redecorated the Oval Office and then he took another two week vacation.”  Moments later, Letterman talked about Obama’s address to the nation the previous day before presenting a video of the speech.  As you’ll see from this doctored clip, the President wasn’t wearing attire at all suitable for the occasion (video follows with commentary): Readers are reminded that Letterman joked about Obama’s vacations just last Tuesday. Remember shortly after his inauguration Hollywood comedians and writers felt Obama was off-limits. Not anymore!

‘Catfish’ Filmmakers Respond To ‘Is It Real?’ Debate

‘We’re not that creative,’ Ariel Schulman laughs to MTV News. By Kara Warner Nev Schulman and Ariel Schulman in “Catfish” Photo: Rogue After making a splash at Sundance at the beginning of this year — both for being a hit with audiences and for stirring up a little controversy regarding the is-it-real-or-fake discussion that divided critics — “Catfish” is on its way to theaters September 17. The heavily hyped indie documentary revolves around NYC-based photographer Yev Schulman and the series of curious events that occur when he begins an online friendship with an 8-year-old girl and a romantic relationship with her older sister. When MTV News caught up with the film’s two first-time directors, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, they discussed what prompted them to begin filming to begin with, their subsequent decisions to keep the cameras rolling no matter what and their reactions to the “it’s a fake” controversy. MTV : Without revealing the big twist, what is this film about? Henry Joost : It’s a true story about an experience we had. The main character is Ariel’s younger brother who works with us, who got into a Facebook relationship that took a turn for the unexpected, and we were there to capture it. Ariel Schulman : People are surprised we started filming as early as we did, but truth is, we’ve been filming each other for years, and we’re always prepared. … I’ve got this brother who is just very charismatic and gets into a lot of trouble and gets himself into situations, and if I’m not filming him, I usually regret it. Joost : We’ve been doing it since high school. We’re those annoying guys: “Come on, you don’t have to film this. It’s not interesting.” Schulman : So [Yev] gets involved with this 8-year-old girl who’s a painter. She’s obsessed with his photos, he’s a ballet photographer in New York, he’s a dance junkie. He’s a straight dance junkie, which is a good situation to be in. … I was already filming him, because I’m always filming him. … I thought, “This looks like a friendship and sort of business relationship,” because she starts painting and selling the paintings based on his photos, and they split the proceeds. … It develops, and he meets her older sister, and they start to fall in love, and we’re like, “Oh, that sounds like a longer short film about Internet romance, and it will end when they meet,” and that’s just the first act of the movie, and it takes a pretty severe 90-degree turn from there. Joost : We had no idea where it was headed. It was this soap opera unfolding in our office. … It was engrossing. Ariel started filming it, and he’s been wanting to make a movie about his brother, because separate from the movie, his brother is incredible, a real-life character and always attracting drama and people. He’s a really charismatic person, and he has no filter, and he just wades into things. MTV : You mentioned that things take a serious turn. Were there moments when Yev wanted you guys to stop rolling? Joost : He had to be talked into it [at times]. Schulman : It was his life in front of the lens, and it gets pretty hairy. We have a couple arguments, and that’s in the movie. There were times when I didn’t want to go through with it, [Yev] didn’t want to go through with it, [Joost] didn’t want to go through with it. … The tables turned, and … Joost : Ultimately, it became Yev’s journey to find out the truth. He ended up convincing us to keep going at different points; each of us sort of chicken out at different points. MTV : What do you think of the controversy, people claiming it’s all fake? Joost : It is a documentary in that it’s something that actually happened and we filmed it and none of it is staged or fake. To us, we had no idea people were going to have that reaction until Sundance, and after the first screening, [“Super Size Me” director/star] Morgan Spurlock went up to somebody on our team and went, “That is the best fake documentary I’ve ever seen,” and we were like, “Really?” Because how do you react to that in our shoes? … It’s kind of strange, because to us, there’s no debate; that’s what happened. I think what people are reacting to a lot is, the film is edited. We can’t put out a 250-hour movie, so we’re making decisions and streamlining the narrative and presenting what we feel is the clearest representation of what happened, but it’s real, and there’s nothing disingenuous about it. Schulman : It gives us too much credit, though. If this were fake, then it would be … Joost : Yeah, we would be so much smarter than we actually are. Schulman : Yeah, we’re not that creative. Joost : It would be amazing if we had faked it. I don’t know how we would have done it, but … Schulman : And my brother would be the best actor since Marlon Brando. Obama Speech August 31 2010

On MSNBC, an Incensed Maddow Howls Over Obama’s Kind Words for George W. Bush

President Barack Obama’s decision to include, in his Tuesday night address from the Oval Office on the end to the “combat mission” in Iraq, a sentence respectful toward former President George W. Bush, appalled MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. Anchor Keith Olbermann recited Obama’s graciousness toward Bush (“It’s well known that he and I disagreed about the war from its outset, yet no one could doubt President Bush’s support for our troops or his love of country and commitment to our security”) and then, obviously speaking for himself and the entire MSNBC team, proposed: “There are people who would support President Obama who would howl at hearing that said aloud more than once.” Maddow indeed howled, launching into an indignant rant: To have in this speech, as combat operations are ending, to have…the President not only not addressing the circumstances in which we went to war, but these kind words for President Bush , describing his “commitment to our security” despite the recklessness with which President Bush discarded that national security in favor of this war of choice, which only diminished our security, and is responsible, probably, for the Afghanistan war still going on today, for the deaths of people who have died in Afghanistan after the time after which that war would have ended had we not gone to Iraq — not to mention all of the people who died in Iraq. After finally taking a breath, she continued: To talk about him having a demonstrated “commitment to our security,” having started this war on the terms on which he started it, I mean, it’s beyond restraint from President Obama and anybody in the pro-Iraq war, pro-Bush camp who doesn’t feel like they’ve been given the greatest political present they never deserved, was not listening to this speech. From MSNBC’s Countdown at about 8:24 PM EDT, just after President Obama completed his August 31 speech carried by all the networks: KEITH OLBERMANN: That one sentence in there, “It’s well known,” referring to President Bush, “that he and I disagreed about the war from its outset, yet no one could doubt President Bush’s support for our troops or his love of country and commitment to our security.” There are people who would support President Obama who would howl at hearing that said aloud more than once. Once again, contextualize this in terms of the entire administration. RACHEL MADDOW: Yeah, I’m, I think we shouldn’t get past how remarkable it is, how much the proponents of the Iraq war are getting off easy here. I mean, we’ve got Paul Wolfowitz and John Bolten and these guys, like out now offering their suggestions on what ought to happen in Iraq next. Paul Wolfowitz, who said that the war would pay for itself, that we wouldn’t have to spend any money there. And to have in this speech, as combat operations are ending, to have – as you point out Keith – the President not only not addressing the circumstances in which we went to war, but these kind words for President Bush, describing his “commitment to our security” despite the recklessness with which President Bush discarded that national security in favor of this war of choice, which only diminished our security, and is responsible, probably, for the Afghanistan war still going on today, for the deaths of people who have died in Afghanistan after the time after which that war would have ended had we not gone to Iraq — not to mention all of the people who died in Iraq. To talk about him having a demonstrated “commitment to our security,” having started this war on the terms on which he started it, I mean, it’s beyond restraint from President Obama and anybody in the pro-Iraq war, pro-Bush camp who doesn’t feel like they’ve been given the greatest political present they never deserved, was not listening to this speech. OLBERMANN: They won’t.

Open Thread: More Corruption Exposed

Today’s starter topic: Another congresscritter exposed for corrupt dealings with government money : Longtime Dallas congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson has awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships to four relatives and a top aide’s two children since 2005, using foundation funds set aside for black lawmakers’ causes. The recipients were ineligible under anti-nepotism rules of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, which provided the money. And all of the awards violated a foundation requirement that scholarship winners live or study in a caucus member’s district. Johnson, a Democrat, denied any favoritism when asked about the scholarships last week. Two days later, she acknowledged in a statement released by her office that she had violated the rules but said she had done so “unknowingly” and would work with the foundation to “rectify the financial situation.”

Emmys Night Belongs To ‘Glee,’ ‘Modern Family’

Host Jimmy Fallon adds slushees and Twitter to the awards-show mix. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jimmy Fallon onstage at the 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards kicked off not with a bang, but with a splash. Host Jimmy Fallon corralled the cast of the Emmy Award-nominated hit “Glee” for a cold open straight out of McKinley High. Enlisting stars like Jon Hamm, Tina Fey and Betty White, while dodging an overeager Kate Gosselin, the gang jumped around until Jane Lynch doused Fallon and Fey with a candy-colored slushee, demanding to be added to the song-and-dance number. Then things really got poppin’. Fallon punched up the Emmys telecast with digital and musical touches similar to those he often uses on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.” He didn’t slow-jam any of the categories, but the comedian did strap on an acoustic guitar to introduce sizzle reels recapping the year in television. A few lucky Emmy fans on Twitter got some love when Fallon wove their comments into his intro for presenters like Sofia Vergara, Tina Fey and Jim Parsons. Jim Parsons from “The Big Bang Theory” edged out favored stars like Steve Carell, Tony Shalhoub and Alec Baldwin for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. In addition to new music and technology, new faces dominated the evening, as several Emmy victors took home hardware for the first time. Claire Danes from “Temple Grandin,” Eric Stonestreet from “Modern Family,” “Glee” scene-stealer Lynch , Archie Panjabi from “The Good Wife” and Aaron Paul from “Breaking Bad” all scored their first trophies. “Glee” golden boy Ryan Murphy also snagged his first Emmy for Directing for a Comedy Series for the pilot of the Fox hit. Although low on nutty, unscripted live-television moments, the telecast delivered send-ups of some of television’s biggest hits. In one clip, the cast of the Outstanding Comedy Series “Modern Family” endures inane suggestions about how to improve the show. Ideas included teaming up with animated potty mouth Stewie from “Family Guy,” shooting the show in 3-D and adding the dreamy George Clooney, who also received the night’s Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, to the mix. Fallon also kept the tone light with a tribute to shows we lost over the past year. Manning a pink piano and sporting rose-colored glasses,

Federal officials are investigating a fire that started overnight at the site of a new Islamic center in a Nashville suburb. Ben Goodwin of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department confirmed to CBS Affiliate WTVF that the fire, which burned construction equipment at the future site of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, is being ruled as arson. Special Agent Andy Anderson of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told CBS News that the fire destroyed one piece of construction equipment and damaged three others. Gas was poured over the equipment to start the fire, Anderson said. The ATF, FBI and Rutherford County Sheriff's Office are conducting a joint investigation into the fire, Anderson said. WTVF reports firefighters were alerted by a passerby who saw flames at the site. One large earth hauler was set on fire before the suspect or suspects left the scene. The chair of the center's planning committee, Essim Fathy, said he drove to the site at around 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning after he was contacted by the sheriff's department. “Our people and community are so worried of what else can happen,” said Fathy. “They are so scared.” http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/28/national/main6814690.shtml added by: atomiclegion
