Jon Stewart’s Latest Ground Zero Mosque Defense Lapses Into Anti-Catholic Jokes

Daily Show host Jon Stewart has again come to the defense of the Ground Zero mosque-builders, complete with a graphic suggesting the opponents are conducting a “Mosque-erade.” Stewart brought in “senior religion correspondent” John Oliver, and predictably, they launched back into Catholic pedophile humor, as if it were fresh and original and so, well, 2002: STEWART: Why should religious groups have to bend to people’s worst suspicions about them? JOHN OLIVER: Because, Jon,  there’s a difference between what you can do and what you should do. For instance, you can build a Catholic church next to a playground. Should you? Should you do that, Jon? Should you do that? [Whoops, laughter and applause.] STEWART (under the noise): I don’t see a problem with it. OLIVER: Well, I’m just posing the question. Or am I alone in thinking it’s a little too soon for that? They clearly loved that joke. It was repeated on their own Internet video clips to invite you to watch. (Is it any wonder atheists like Richard Dawkins revel in how “Jon Stewart’s Crusade Against The Catholic Church Rolls On” ?) From there, Oliver joked that Jews shouldn’t wear their yarmulkes on Good Friday. There should be just one day they don’t wear their “murder caps.” Stewart then responded by saying Oliver’s British accent was inappropriate so soon after the Boston Massacre, which led Oliver to launch a pile of taunts of “Go f— yourself!”

Moment of Truth: Oliver Stone on Gonzo Docmaking and ‘Good Guy’ Hugo Chávez

Welcome back to Moment of Truth, Movieline’s spotlight on the best in nonfiction cinema. Today we hear from director Oliver Stone about his new documentary South of the Border , which opens tomorrow in limited release. For all the political heat Oliver Stone has withstood (and will continue to withstand) over the years, no one can really call the guy a slacker. Take his latest doc South of the Border , which Stone filmed and edited during the course of making two narrative features and a 10-hour documentary he’s still working on. The concept was simple enough, even while the implications were more than a little complex: Introduce the leaders of seven Latin American countries to U.S. and European audiences who, for too long, have received the wrong idea about them from the media. Does it work? That’s up to you.

Right Wing Eats Itself Over Sean Hannity’s Charity [Charity]

A right-wing blogger went through tax returns for Hannity’s Freedom Concerts , performances to raise money for veterans and their children. She alleged that most of the money goes on lavish expenses . The charity, and other bloggers, fought back. Conservative fight! The blogger, Debbie Schlussel , has some history with Hannity. In 2007 she accused him of ripping off her reporting (or something) in this screed . Schlussel says she was acting on a second-hand tip from a friend who had spoken to a friend at Fox News and alleged that, for the performances, Hannity got the use of “a Gulfstream 5 plane to fly him and his family/entourage to the concerts; a “fleet” (that’s the word the guy used) of either Cadillac or Lincoln SUVs for him and his family/entourage; and several suites at really expensive hotels for him and his family/entourage. The promoter apparently values Hannity’s star demands at well over $200,000 per event.” When she dug into the tax returns she found that in 2006 Freedom Alliance, the Oliver North-backed charity affiliated with the concerts, reported revenue of $10,822,785. But that only $397,900, or 3.68 per cent, went to troops or the children of troops while 62 per cent “went to “expenses,” including $979,485 for “consultants” and an “advisor.” … The tax forms show that “New World Aviation” got paid $60,601 for “air travel.” … And finally, that year, Freedom Alliance spent $1,730,816 on postage and shipping and $1,414,215 on printing, for a total of $3,145,031.” She found similar patterns in the returns from 2007 and 2008. Freedom Alliance has issued a response denying all of Schlussel’s claims. She counters that they’re now merely redefining the spending. Other right-wing bloggers respond that the reason so little money has been paid out is that it’s being held in a college fund for the children of veterans. It’s almost impossible, unless you’re an accountant or an expert on heated ‘I love our troops more’ right-wing feuds, to figure out whether Hannity is corrupt or Schlussel has an axe to grind. Or neither. Or both. But if you have any (non-rant-based) information to share, email at the address below.
