Olivia Culpo, the 20-year-old Miss USA and former Miss Rhode Island, won the Miss Universe pageant on Wednesday night in Las Vegas, becoming the first American to do so since 1997. The Boston University sophomore outlasted 88 other competitors. Miss Philippines, Janine Tugonon, came in second, and Miss Venezuela, Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, finished third. “What an honor! So the Miss Universe results are in, and I’ve gotta say, I’m a little shocked. The judges completely went over my head, and crowned Miss USA Olivia Culpo instead. Troubled Teen Mom cast member Amber Portwood stated the obvious in a statement from jail in which she said she is not normal – and needs to grow up. Two weeks after the Teen Mom finale , she issued remarks from prison to coincide with the eunion special that aired Tuesday night on MTV with Dr. Drew. In it, she talked about how she “got lost” in drugs and alcohol. Amber Portwood, now serving a five-year sentence, writes: “Right now I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing with my life. I guess I just got lost. I went to jail because I had an addiction to opiates.” “You live and you learn and that’s what’s real. “It was time for me to stop partying and realize that even though I’m 21, I’m not a normal 21-year-old.” “I’m a mother. I have to grow up quicker and start acting like a mother .” No arguments here, even though Portwood’s voluntarily decision to serve out a five-year term in jail rather than comply with a court-ordered drug program is dubious. After violating her probation stemming from a December 2011 arrest for drug possession, Amber’s behind bars for a LONG time, but says it’s for the best. “My No. 1 priority right now in life is dedicating my life to being sober, to being a sober person,” she writes, adding that she’s doing it for Leah , 3. “[I want] to show my daughter that people make mistakes but you can always come back. If Leah learns anything from me she should see how becoming a teen mom can change you. How everything is postponed,” Portwood said. She also hopes people learn from her mistakes. “We made the show for a reason…some decisions change your whole life. If you don’t want to take responsibility and use protection, don’t have sex.” “One night can change your whole life into a sad story,” noted Portwood, adding that the “mean person” viewers see on Teen Mom is far from reality. “I want to show everybody I can do it and can start living a straight life and getting my family back in order,” she concluded, and we wish her the best.

Was anyone else on the edge of their seat with excitement during last night’s Miss USA competition? They were all so beautiful, I couldn’t decide which one was my favorite. Alright so I didn’t care who won, I was just interested in seeing some hot chicks in bikinis and high heels, it just looks so classy, but I watched it none the less. Anyhow, the winner was Olivia Culpo and as part of her first duties as the new Miss USA , she had to make an appearance on HollywoodTuna . Welcome to the big time princess.
Miss USA 2012 Olivia Culpo should thank Audrey Bolte. The 23-year-old Miss Ohio was the second runner-up at last night’s pageant – not a poor showing, but Bolte’s title hopes were likely undone by one answer. She was asked by judge Marilu Henner, “Do you think women are depicted in movies and TV in an accurate and positive way and please give us an example.” Miss Ohio’s amazing response: “I think it depends on the movie. I think there are some movies that depict women in a very positive role and some movies that put them in a little bit more of a negative role, but by the end of the movie they show that woman power that I know we all have.” “Such as the movie Pretty Woman .” “We had a wonderful, beautiful woman, Julia Roberts, and she was having a rough time. But you know what? She came out on top and she didn’t let anyone stay in her path.” Yeah. We sort of see Audrey’s point about the character’s perseverance and strength, but still … saying a hooker is a positive depiction of women on screen? Ouch. Roberts’ Vivian Ward was a likable woman, but she come out on top when a rich man hired her for sex for a week and then rescued her from a life of prostitution. Probably not what the judges were looking for.
