The Master , the latest from Paul Thomas Anderson starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix , have captured the zeitgeist of Venice Film Festival talk in the first half of the festival, but perhaps more quietly, director Haifaa Al Mansour is making celluloid history with her film Wadjda . Al Mansour is Saudi Arabia’s first female director, in a country that forbids movie theaters. The film follows the story of a determined 10 year-old girl living in the country’s capital, Riyadh. Shot entirely in Saudi Arabia, according to the director, the film follows young Wadjda as she lives her life trying to dodge the strict rules of Saudi society both at home and school. According to a profile of the film in Reuters , she is disciplined for not wearing her veil, listening to pop music and not “hiding in front of men.” But her sites set on a green bicycle that she decides to raise money to get it. Her plan is to learn Koranic verses and take part in a religious competition at school. If she can raise the money, she will buy the bike. And in the meantime, she will – at least temporarily – show herself as a renewed pious girl. “It’s easy to say it’s a difficult, conservative place for a woman and do nothing about it, but we need to push forward and hope we can help make it a more relaxed and tolerant society,” she said after her film premiered in Venice, speaking to reporters in English, according to Reuters. She added that the restrictive kingdom has started to open up for women, noting that female athletes traveled to London for the recent Olympics and that its monarch, King Abdullah has opened up better educational opportunities for women and they now can vote in municipal elections. “”It is not like before, although I can’t say it’s like heaven,” she said. “Society won’t just accept it, people will put pressure on women to stay home, but we have to fight.” Still she did encounter some social-stigma while filming in the country’s capital despite having received permission. Locals in some more conservative areas of the city did not like seeing a female filmmaker directing with men on the set and at times used a walkie-talkie in order to give instruction to her male actors. No stranger to James Bond himself, Sir Roger Moore said he thinks the current man to hold the reins of 007, Daniel Craig , is the best actor to play the eternally debonaire British secret service agent. Eighty-four year-old Moore, who played Bond in seven films between 1973 and 1985 gave kudos to Craig’s performance in his new book, Bond on Bond . “I love Casino Royale and Daniel Craig. He is a wonderful actor, certainly the best actor to play Bond,” Moore said as quoted in BBC . He also noted that Craig, 44, also had a slammin’ bod, saying he had “the best build of any Bond.” That is a tall compliment given the half-dozen people to play James Bond, beginning with Dr. No in 1962 include the likes of Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. Reminiscing about his years as Bond, Moore, whose final two rounds as 007 were in Octobpussy (1983) and A View to a Kill (1985) noted with some levity: “Back then I could leap out of a chair without fear of my knees cracking. “[I] could chew a toffee without fear of losing a tooth; could admire my flowing locks and my bronzed, slim torso. “With a twitch of the old eyebrow I set pulses racing across the world, they say. These days it’s my pacemaker that keeps my pulse racing.” There have been twenty-two films in the James Bond series. The next installment will open Stateside in November (October 26 in the U.K.). Skyfall , will also be Daniel Craig’s third round at playing 007. In 1973, Roger Moore became 007 for Live and Let Die and played Bond a further six times over twelve years before being replaced by Timothy Dalton for two films. Last month, a new trailer was released , teasing the next Bond installment. Skyfall also stars Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory and Judi Dench. And Craig even managed to get none other than H.M. Queen Elizabeth II into the act with a short skit helping to kick off last month’s Olympics in London. Craig approached Her Majesty in what looked like a Buckingham Palace office and then was later seen jumping out of a helicopter with a sovereign look-a-like. [ Sources: BBC , Wikipedia ]
Say it ain’t so Lance. After fighting accusations for the more than ten years, famed cyclist Lance Armstrong surrendered on Thursday. The seven time Tour de France winning athlete said that he would not continue to contest charges thrown at him by the US Anti-Doping Agency. They’ve been accusing him of being doped up during his unbeatable years and called him out as one of the ringleaders of systematic doping on his team. Declaring “enough is enough,” Lance Armstrong says he will not fight charges brought by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, a stunning decision that will cause him to be stripped of the seven Tour de France titles that turned him into an American hero. USADA confirmed late Thursday it will strip him of all results since Aug. 1, 1998 and ban him from all competition for life. Armstrong said his decision did not mean he would accept USADA’s sanctions. His lawyers threatened a lawsuit if USADA proceeded, arguing the agency must first resolve a dispute with the International Cycling Union over whether the case should be pursued. “It is a sad day for all of us who love sport and our athletic heroes,” USADA CEO Travis Tygart said. “This is a heartbreaking example of how the win-at-all-costs culture of sport, if left unchecked, will overtake fair, safe and honest competition.” Lance rebuttled in his own statement by saying ““If I thought for one moment that by participating in USADA’s process, I could confront these allegations in a fair setting and — once and for all — put these charges to rest, I would jump at the chance,” Armstrong said. “But I refuse to participate in a process that is so one-sided and unfair…I know who won those seven Tours…The toughest event in the world where the strongest man wins. Nobody can ever change that. Especially Travis Tygart.” Lance will lose all of his titles, including his 2000 Olympic Bronze Medal, and all money he won from August 1998 and on! He’s also banned from competing, coaching, or having any official role with any sport that follows the World Anti-Doping Code. Armstrong insists that this is not a defeat for him and backed down so he could focus on his family and his Livestrong Foundation. Must have been some cray isht going on behind closed doors for him to just walk away. SMH Source Images via WENN
Bobby Brown has checked into rehab to deal with a reliance on alcohol. Good, encouraging news, right? Not so much, says Bobbi Kristina Brown. Brown’s 18-year old daughter, who skipped out on her dad’s recent wedding and is considering a name change , was asked about her father’s attempts to get clean and whether she’s proud of him for “rising above” his substance abuse issues. “Rise above’ is not the word you should use,” Bobbi told TMZ in response to the question. “Not at all.” Ouch. Brown checked into a facility this week, following a March arrest for DUI and years worth of constant drinking. Bobbi doesn’t think it will make a difference. Let’s hope he proves her wrong.

Rumors of Ryan Lochte as The Bachelor are swirling ever since the Olympics, and last night, host-pimp Chris Harrison says he’s very much open to the idea. With a couple of caveats, that is: Lochte must wear a Speedo the entire season. Absolutely no peeing in pools at the mansion. “That’s part of the deal” Harrison said at The Expendables 2 premiere in Hollywood. “Did you see him in his Speedo? I mean, all of America stopped.” “It’s a female driven show, come on!” Lochte, who will guest star on 90210 this fall, said of the Speedo stipulation, “That’s fine … I usually already am. There’s not much of a difference.” While conventional wisdom says the show will go with Arie Luyendyk, Jr. , or Sean Lowe, Harrison says “I think it would be awesome” to have Ryan. “If he promises not to pee in the pool, we’ll be alright.” “If it gets asked, I’d definitely consider it,” the 28-year-old swimmer said of looking for love on The Bachelor this winter. “So we’ll see what happens.” What do you think: Ryan Lochte as The Bachelor?
