You’ve probably never heard of Yingluck Shinawatra, but she is now in history books forever. Yingluck Shinawatra was poised to become Thailand’s first female prime minister Sunday after her party won a majority of parliamentary seats in the nation’s general elections. The official tally had not yet been completed, but with more than 90 percent of votes counted Sunday night, Yingluck’s Pheu Thai party had won 262 seats in the country’s 500-seat parliament. “The first thing I want to do is help people on their economic situation,” she said earlier Sunday, refusing to declare victory until the official count was over. Minutes before, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva conceded that she had won. Yingluck is the younger sister of one of Thailand’s most polarizing political figures, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a 2006 military coup. Two years later, he left the country after being convicted on conflict of interest charges — accusations that he still denies. Flags with his image waved in the sticky night air outside the Pheu Thai headquarters. A child wearing a shirt with his sister Yingluck’s picture on it walked past them, trying to get closer to the celebration outside. Yingluck’s critics worry she will simply do her brother’s bidding — something she has denied. Before she even gave her victory speech, her brother shared his comments from exile in Dubai. “Well, I would tell them that I really want to go back, but I will wait for the right moment and the right situation,” Thaksin told reporters. The Pheu Thai party remains fiercely behind Thaksin and wants him to return. Oh. Yikes. Source
Businessman Herman Cain is becoming very popular amongst the people, but could he earn YOUR vote? Bolstered by support from his loyal radio talk-show audience and Tea Party backers, businessman Herman Cain has revved up mainstream conservatives, rising recently to third place in a poll of voters in Iowa, the leadoff caucus state. In his pursuit of the Republican presidential nomination, Cain’s views on the economy and his fiery delivery have resonated with some in the GOP. His campaign has also been marked by controversy, including his comment that he would not want a Muslim bent on killing Americans in his administration. Just this week, Cain accused comedian Jon Stewart of disliking him because he is an “American black conservative.” Already losing some of his cachet to Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann, Cain, the lone African-American GOP candidate, is trying to win over a party that hasn’t had a black nominee. Sidestepping race as an issue in his campaign may have helped him gain momentum in recent weeks, but whether he can turn vigor into votes will depend largely on voters’ ability to look past his skin color and perceive him as a serious candidate. Here is what some people who support Mr. Cain. “He’s fresh, he’s outspoken,” said Debbie Dooley, head of the Georgia Tea Party Patriots. “If they hear him speak, he usually wins them over. With him, what you see is what you get. People like that.” “He doesn’t believe in the whole business of race being a defining factor of anything in this country,” said William Boone, a political science professor at Clark Atlanta University, which is predominantly black. “He says, ‘If you work hard, you will make it. Look at me.’ “There’s a buzz on the street among activists. People like him; they want to know more about him. That’s sort of living the dream as far as a presidential candidate goes. He’s getting the kind of reaction every candidate imagines.” This all sounds like glowing praise, but the question still remains can he get people to believe in him how they believe in Barack Obama, and show up at the polls on voting day. How do you feel about a black republican candidate? Source
Part one of Forbes Magazine’s “Best Paid Celebrities Under 30″ list was dominated by the athletes. But celebrities 1-10 are mostly musicians. A few of them are newcomers, who have somehow found a way to get around the slump the entertainment industry has been in for the last decade. African-Americans, however, are grossly misrepresented. Flip through the pages below and check out who rounds out the list of the past year’s highest earning celebrities under 30. (Editor’s Note: Part 1 of the list inadvertently skipped Lil Wayne at #20, and listed #10, Rafael Nadal , at #11.)
Wow, definitely didn’t see THIS one coming… Thandie Newton has revealed that she has come to terms with a traumatic relationship with a film director 23 years her senior who she claims took advantage of her innocence as a teenager. She spoke about her six-year affair with director John Duigan which she began when she was 16 after travelling to Australia to audition for his film Flirting, which starred Nicole Kidman. The Bafta-winning actress has said the relationship left her feeling ‘self-destructive’ and said she has only spoken about it ‘so teenagers can see they can resist and gain self-awareness’. Speaking to InStyle magazine, Miss Newton, 38, star of Mission: Impossible II, The Pursuit of Happyness and Rock ‘n Rolla, claims Duigan took advantage of her when she was vulnerable. She said: ‘I was a very shy, very sweet girl. I wasn’t in control of the situation. Would I have liked things to be different? Sure. ‘But I can now value myself more for the way I got through it. I don’t see myself as a victim.’ She added: ‘Part of me feels grateful I can accept the difficulties that came with that situation and be a more compassionate person myself.’ Damn, so Thandie (Miss Newton if ya nasty) was a fast lil thang in her teenage years huh? We see how a young girl is attracted to an older man, but Mr. Duigan should be ashamed of his damn self! He’d be better off just payin’ prostitues that “dating” a 16 year old…smh Source
