She may even have a role in the film. Set It Off tells the story of four friends who end up robbing a series of different banks amid frustration over their low paying jobs. This was the film that would serve as the launching pad for director F. Gary Gray’s now illustrious career. Set It Off followed the hit movie Friday , which also was very well received at the time of its’ release. The four women who played in Set It Off — Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise — were essentially the first women in film to play a character that exhibited as much depth as male stars in similar films. Issa Rae, who served as co-creator and executive producer for Insecure , has familiarity acting in a role where a group of friends are required to navigate through the hardships of life. Positioned to make her presence felt on the big screen, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys tried to make it happen for Issa. “Issa became a big movie star,” Bloys explained. “We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things.”

Page Six is reporting that Anthony Ellison’s defense lawyer Devereaux Cannick told jurors “It’s a Jussie Smollett, if you will” referring to the kidnapping his client is accused of participating in. Cannick went on to tell jurors that Tekashi, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, staged the kidnapping in order to hype the release of his then-forthcoming single “FEFE,” featuring Nicki Minaj. The lawyer claimed Hernandez posted a “diamond-encrusted pendant” to his Instagram account, along with the phrase “somebody come snatch my chain.” For fans who’ve been keeping up with rainbow haired rapper since he broke through with his smash single “Gummo,” part of Tekashi’s troll game was taking to social media and claiming that no one would be able to ever touch him or rob him because his crew was so thorough. In the end it turned out the wolves he boasted about having turned on him and got him themselves, but was it all an act? In today’s age of social media fame and peoples endless pursuit of “likes” we wouldn’t put anything past anybody. Tekashi for his part is set to take the stand as early as today (September 17) and being that he’s facing all kinds of charges of his own you can expect prosecutors to be standing by with a gang of coin roll wrappers for all the dimes he’s expected to drop. Heck, he might bless them with a few extra quarters while putting in his own two pennies.
ATTENTION, TELEVISION FANS: We don’t know if your teacher recently popped a test or if you’re currently a mess or if your dog ate all your homework last night. We do know, however, that it will be alright regardless… because NBC Universal just dropped some truly incredible news: We’re about to be Saved By the Bell once again! The company made this announcement on Tuesday morning, confirming that an updated version of this memorable sitcom will help anchor its new streaming service, which will somehow be called “Peacock.” The reboot will reportedly star Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley, who dated throughout most of the original seres as their respective characters, A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano. In a truly amazing official logline, NBC says that Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s iconic character, Zack Morris, has gone on to become the govenror of California. This is what the synopsis says: When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many low-income high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the highest performing schools in the state — including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the over privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality. Does this mean Gosselaar could make an appearance? You never know — but he’s currently signed on to star as a lead on ABC’s new series Mixed-ish, having just come off Fox’s The Passage, which followed roles on the programs Nobodies and Pitch. Gosselaar has enjoyed a very strong career since Saved By the Bell went off the air. Conversely, Berkley made headlines way back in 1995 for starring as a stripper in the movie Showgirls. She’s done very little since. Lopez, who has hosted Extra and Access Hollywood, among other television shows, hasn’t acted in ages — but did recently stir up controversy for some homophobic remarks . As for other original cast members? Tiffani Thiessen has gone on to a strong career and is unlikely to want to reprise the role of Kelly Kapowski, while Dustin Diamond is now best known for having starred in a sex tape and for getting arrested a lot . And Lark Voorhies appears to have some mental problems . Saved by the Bell originally aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993. It cented on on a group of friends as they navigated life at Bayside High School and the cast included: Berkley (as Jessie Spano), Lopez (as A.C Slater), Gosselaar (as Zack Morris), Thiessen (as Kelly Kapowski), Voorhies (as Lisa Turtle), Diamond (as Screech) and Dennis Haskins (as principal Mr. Belding). An eventual movie was made of the sitcom, along with a very brief run of the Saturday morning series as a primetime show where Zack, Slater and company went to the same college. It didn’t exactly fare very well. And yet, in the wake of this revival news and in honor of Berkley’s Spano during her addiction to caffeine pills: We’re not even scared. We’re just SO excited!
Some marriages don’t need the alleged “reality TV curse” to fall apart, but it sure seems to help. Tensions between Emily Simpson and her husband grew worse when he failed the bar exam back in January. Things clearly need to change. But now disturbing, violent details are leaking about Shane’s previous marriage that have fans fearing for Emily’s safety. RadarOnline got their hands on Orange County Superior Court documents dating back to 2008. That was the year of Shane Simpson’s bitter divorce from his ex-wife, Miriam. Unfortunately, their dispute was much more serious than a botched bar exam. Shane was accused of physically, sexually, and emotionally abusing his now ex-wife during their marriage. The allegations are right there in the court documents. In a declaration after filing or divorce, Miriam wrote: “He was physically abusive to me.” “He was sexually abusive to me,” her accusations continued. Those are already just about the most serious accusations that you can level at another human being. She also alleged that Shane was “addicted to prescription medications” during their marriage. Miriam reported that the “stress” had such a detrimental effect upon her health that she felt “near death.” Miriam’s full statement explains that much more clearly. “He used and took prescription medications of others to quell his habit,” Miriam wrote. We think that she means that his hope was to hide his alleged habit from discovery. More personally, Miriam accused: “He made me feel trapped and hopeless.” She said that these feelings came “as a result of excessive control and lack of liberties placed upon me…” “Because of all the aforementioned abuse, stress, and circumstances,” Miriam continued. “I became physically ill.” The allegations that she leveled against Shane in 2008 could certainly cause someone to have numerous physical symptoms. She shared: “after months of diagnostic tests, blood transfusions, and other medical procedures …” “… Not only was I diagnosed with blood disorders caused by stress …” Miriam accused. She revealed: “My body was what seems to be near death and I had no choice but to leave.” Court records do not specify whether Miriam called the police for help or to file a criminal complaint against Shane. But we know, of course, that most abuse victims do not report their abusers. There is a record of Shane’s own declaration filed in the divorce. “In November 2007, Mother [Miriam] went to Utah with our children for the Thanksgiving weekend and never returned to California,” he wrote. “She filed for a dissolution of our marriage,” he noted. “At that time, Mother refused to allow me visitation with our children.” “For approximately one month after she moved to Utah,” he accused. “I did not know where our children were and was not allowed to visit with them.” What may be astonishing is that, these days, Miriam and Shane seem to get along well. They share a 50/50 split of custody of their children. (Shane also has children with Emily, of course) Insiders describe them as amicable. The Duggars might easily be one of the most fascinating families on reality TV, but similar to the Kardashian family, many wonder what the heck they actually do for a living. Besides getting hefty paychecks from TLC, some of the Duggars help their dad, Jim Bob, with his commercial real estate business, while others do mission work or hobbies that they try to pass off as “careers”. As for the women, well, it’s no surprise that due to the family’s strict religion they seek more of the traditional roles as a stay-at-home mom and housewife. *hard eye roll* But there is one Duggar who (almost) impressed us by showing a desire for something other than bible studies and cooking three meals a day. Lauren Swanson recently shared some fun facts about herself in a new Instagram post, and besides the fact that the Counting On star can yodel, she caught our attention by opening up about her education. Usually, it’s not shocking to hear someone use their education as a “get to know me” tool, but considering the Duggar family’s home-schooled background and lack of college degrees, it’s a pretty big deal. However, just because Swanson did graduate with a degree doesn’t mean she is putting it to use. But thanks to her IG followers who asked all the hard questions, she got candid about her future career goals . Unfortunately, it was slightly disappointing. “I went to college when I was 16 and finished my Associate’s degree in Nursing at 18,” Lauren explained in her post. Her fans needed more of an explanation. Like, you know, why she isn’t a nurse then? “I would have to take my boards exam to practice. However, really nursing isn’t my passion,” she admitted. Lauren explained what she meant in another post after a second fan asked if she has ever worked before and whether or not she would ever go back to work. In response to that comment, she said, “An Associate’s Degree is only two years worth of schooling. I would have to go back for an additional year or two to be a certified nurse.” I’m going to go ahead and guess that this means 1. she hasn’t worked in the past considering she dodged that question and 2. she seems to have no intention of actually going back to school, or ever getting a real career. No judgment here. It’s important to follow your heart, but I must admit it would be quite refreshing to see one of the Duggar’s care about something other than reproduction. And God. Don’t @ me. Lauren and her husband Josiah Duggar found out back in May that they are expecting their first child together , which came as very special news considering the tragic miscarriage these two suffered months prior. “Recently, we walked through losing a little one through miscarriage, but we’re excited to have another little one on the way now,” Josiah said in a video filmed by TLC. “We’re just extremely grateful for this baby and just going through a lot really shows us how good God is and that miracles do happen.” We’re extremely happy for this couple, and whether or not the mom-to-be decides to continue her education one day, we know she will enjoy this next chapter of her life the most. Thanks to cell phones, the world gets to a real-live police brutality incident go down right before their eyes— causing an even deeper distance between those in Blue and folks with Black skin. But what if you happen to be both; Black And Blue . Deon Taylor ‘s new action flick tells the story of just that. Rookie cop, played by Oscar nominated actress Naomie Harris , inadvertently captures the murder of a young drug dealer on her body cam. After realizing that the murder was committed by corrupt cops, she teams up with the one person from her community who is willing to help her ( Tyrese Gibson ) as she tries to escape both the criminals out for revenge and the police who are desperate to destroy the incriminating footage. I visited the set of the the thriller flick on day 28 of their 30th day of shooting and watched on as they filmed one of the more emotionally intense scenes of the film. Naomi’s character visits her mother’s grave accompanied by an old childhood friend (Tyrese) as she enlists his help to bust the corrupt officers. Their fellow cast members Mike Colter , Frank Grillo and Beau Knapp were also on set filming on that misty, New Orleans afternoon in Lafayette Cemetery. I caught up with director Taylor, Harris and Tyrese and more of the cast as they dished on all things Black and Blue. And one thing that every actor in the film had in common is their love and respect for their director, Deon. When asked what drew him to this particular film, Mr. Taylor shared with the panel of journalists: “I’m an independent filmmaker first. I’ve been doing this by myself for so long that I didn’t want to do anything studio wise. But when this script came to me, I just went crazy because I had never seen a film based around a female, Black police officer. And that’s just everything that I wanted to do.” On preparing for her role as a police office, Naomi told us: “I was able to draw on a lot of stuff that I did before because when I did Miami Vice, I did lots of undercover work, so I was out with the police and doing raids–I actually did a real drug sting. It was really exciting and terrifying.” Tyrese added that taking on such a gritty role in Black and Blue definitely challenged him as an actor. “First thing was me and Deon go back like six years. So once I got that call, my ears literally lit up. And on that call. I was saying to Deon, when you’re apart of these big franchised, it’s a gift and sometimes can work against you. Because these dark, dramatic roles that really require you to go there and peel back the layers — you get overlooked as an actor. They’ll say ‘Oh, he’s that guy from that thing.’ So the seriousness of a Naomi got me in the game of top. I was ready to make that statement.” As we chatted with the entire cast during their break, Deon Taylor opened up about his own personal relationship with law enforcement as a Black man, saying: “I’ve been affected by police officers in many different ways. From the patrolling, when I was younger, in terms of keeping people in certain areas and having a negative reaction to that in the Chicago area, and with how people police you, vs now, living in a different [area] and seeing how the police act there. You have to be a realist and understand, ok they patrol this way here, and they patrol that way there.” “That’s one of the biggest themes in the film — Alycia being from the inner city, coming back to the inner city as a cop and how people look at her and what they say to her. And she has to find out the hard way that people don’t view her as a black female cop. They view her as a cop. She’s trying to make a breakthrough. There are so many different experiences and what we try to actually do is push all of that into one film. The movie takes a complete turn based on the fact that when she’s in trouble, someone from the neighborhood helps her and breaks code. And everything that we’re taught not to do, this character does.” With everything going on in the world today regarding law enforcement, this film is a must see. The highly anticipated Screen Gems flick is in theaters nationwide October 25th.
