What if the Tea Party was black?

Imagine that hundreds of black protesters were to descend upon Washington DC and Northern Virginia, just a few miles from the Capitol and White House, armed with AK-47s, assorted handguns, and ammunition. And imagine that some of these protesters —the black protesters — spoke of the need for political revolution, and possibly even armed conflict in the event that laws they didn’t like were enforced by the government? Would these protester — these black protesters with guns — be seen as brave defenders of the Second Amendment, or would they be viewed by most whites as a danger to the republic? What if they were Arab-Americans? Because, after all, that’s what happened recently when white gun enthusiasts descended upon the nation’s capital, arms in hand, and verbally announced their readiness to make war on the country’s political leaders if the need arose. added by: WarrenOatesLives

The Routemaster returns

Story by Mat Osman, le cool London Photo courtesy Transport for London Non-Londoners look away now. Because there are certain things that the rest of the country finds a little, well, odd about its capital citizens. Like the fact we take the most disgusting of all fish, the eel, as our signature dish and then further ruin them by encasing them in jelly. Or that a person can have a screaming fit on a crowded tube train and not a soul will say a word. And the fact we care about our buses. When the time came to retire the old Routemaster buses – you remember, the ones you could jump on and off when, inevitably, the bus was moving slower than walking pace – there was uproar. And it was a cross-party uproar. Tories didn’t like part of our heritage disappearing. Left-wingers saw it as the people’s will being trampled. And the rest of us just resented sitting in a traffic jam for 20 minutes while the bus stop was just 200 yards away. So come the last mayoral election, with a city sliding into debt, the Olympics hoving into view, and knife crime seemingly endemic, what was near the top of London’s agenda? Boris’s promise to reintroduce the Routemaster, that’s what. So now, deep into the Johnsonian reign – the Routemasters return. It’s a new design from Heatherwick Studio, that in truth bears little resemblance to the old Routemaster, (and, as was amusingly pointed out on Twitter, with a fringe that makes it look appealingly like the first Emo-bus). Reasons to be cheerful? The aforementioned fringe, the chance of swinging casually from the pole by the open back door like some sixties’ Carnaby Street cat, and not one but two staircases to avoid slowcoaches. There’s also a promise of a conductor; good news for a city where the bendy-buses are known simply as ‘free buses’ to millions of passengers. Not so good? Well, the open platform – the very thing that connects the new design with the Routemaster name – can be closed when there is ‘no conductor’ which, given cost-cutting measures, you can bet will be frequently. And these are only mock-ups – the real things won’t on our streets until late 2011. Lost Series Finale: What Did You Think?

In 2004, Lost introduced itself to the world with the open eye of Jack Shepard. Six years later, the show bid farewell when this same eye closed forever. In between, fans were treated to an iconic TV series that was discussed online (and in offices, chat rooms, bars…) more than any in history. The same will likely be said for this week’s series finale, in which all the castways came together in an unexpected location… and let the light shine down on them all. Indeed, there was action, awakening, death and after-life. And we simply want to know: What did you think of the Lost finale?

Audi’s anti environment SuperBowl ad: Thanks for nothing.

And so the green movement is being marketed to men. Or so Audi pretends in their Superbowl ad for their TDI Diesel (which can be converted to a biodiesel if you have a station in your home town). Ya know, I like that Audi makes TDI’s. I do. I hate this ad. While on the surface it almost looks like a PSA that educates about the basic environmental practices in re: to plastics, battery recycling, composting, styrofoam and water usage; after viewing it I walked away with the odd association of feeling constricted and constrained by doing all of those small daily practices for the environment. What’s up with police state over monitoring my every move? (At least I would have gotten a laugh if they had broken in on a sex seen for some un-green sex practices…that’s SuperBowl Sunday appropriate, no?) Frankly, I walked away with an anti-green feeling and irritation towards anyone between me and my ability to do the basic little things I enjoy in life (like eating, and grocery shopping, and hot-tubbing). Look Audi, go ahead and make your cars, but don’t go and F up all the work that so many environmental organizations have been developing to promote and educate that small changes in every day life can be easy to do and can make a difference. The need for liberation and freedom imprinted in men’s DNA (this we have been taught via car commercials) was finally accomplished by breaking out of the line and driving the open road in Audi’s “green” car. Awesome. So this wasn’t about being green, this was just about a need for speed, and escape from the entrapment of family (perhaps I’m being harsh, perhaps this is really a pro-marriage ad….maybe the real underlying message is If you only had a woman to deal with all of those domestic chores you wouldn’t get stuck in silly entrapments, hence you would ultimately have more opportunity to roam the open road…) Bah. Enough over analyzing. It’s kind of sad that I feel the need to dig deep into this ad to find some underlying messaging. But I offer this act of mindsturbation as a favor to Audi; otherwise all that would be left to say is, 'hey look, there goes Audi greenwashing' (c’mon guys, driving a car is just plain wasteful and harmful to the environment). So do us a favor, stick to selling your cars via the messaging about freedom and liberation that comes with having a car. Leave the environmental messaging to people who..well…care. Believe me, we’ll respect you for it in the morning. added by: leahl
