"no bad whores, just bad laws"

SEX workers have rallied in Sydney to demand an end to “whore-phobic” attitudes and greater protection under anti-discrimination laws. Chanting “sex worker rights are human rights” and “no bad whores, just bad laws”, dozens of protesters marched from the Opera House today in a bid to have their rights recognised. Many carried red umbrellas, a symbol of the global movement, while others made statements with T-shirts reading “whore power” and “sluts unite”. “We are human beings, we are people, we do a job and we are continually vilified for that job,” sex worker Julie Bates said, noting that little had changed in the way of community attitudes during her 30-year career. “So whilst we remained silenced, today is a chance for us to speak to the community, so we have a voice. “What we want society to see is that sex work is real damn hard work, and we provide a service like any other industry.” Organised by the Scarlet Alliance, a peak body representing the nation's estimated 20,000 sex workers, the event was one of several staged in capital cities across the country to commemorate International Whores Day. The alliance is using the occasion to lobby state governments for amendments to existing legislation that covers the industry. The campaign focuses on New South Wales, which has the highest concentration of sex workers – about 8000 – yet has inferior anti-discrimination laws compared with other parts of the nation. In the ACT, Queensland and Tasmania, legislation protects against discrimination based on legal sexual activity or occupation, essentially giving mistreated sex workers an avenue for recourse. The most common instances of discrimination reported to the alliance occur during applications for rental properties, bank loans and credit cards. Sex workers are also forced to pay up to five times more than other advertisers in newspapers, and encounter problems when dealing with police and the judicial system, the alliance said. It was often seen when women lost custody cases because of negative stereotypes associated with their jobs. Alliance president Elena Jeffreys said part of the problem stemmed from deep-rooted attitudes within government and mainstream institutions. “They think that sex workers are not part of the community,” she told AAP. “We are absolutely sick of whore-phobic attitudes. “Sex work is legalised, decriminalised, brothels are run in a professional and transparent manner, and sex workers are huge contributors to society, yet we face this discrimination every single day. “It's absolutely untenable and we demand that it be changed.” added by: diode

Nicole Scherzinger To Get Back To Music After ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Victory

Singer, who will hit the studio with Ne-Yo and RedOne, is working on Pussycat Dolls and solo material. By Jocelyn Vena Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough win “Dancing with the Stars” on Tuesday Photo: ABC In the wake of Nicole Scherzinger’s big (if not terribly surprising) win on “Dancing With the Stars” , fans of the Pussycat Doll are wondering what she’ll be up to next. First, we imagine, she might want to get some sleep after the whirlwind press tour, then it looks like she’ll be getting back to work with her girls. The new lineup for the Pussycat Dolls was announced just last week, and the next big step for the group seems to be a new album. Scherzinger admits that she’s been thinking long and hard about what that album will sound like. “Right now I’ve been in the studio working on music nonstop. We’re gonna have another Pussycat Dolls album for all of our fans out there, but that’s gonna be late this year,” she revealed about the group’s next project . But she also hinted that her long-brewing solo record is not dead just yet. “I don’t know if I’m gonna put [the new music out] under my name yet or if it’s going to be perfect for the Dolls,” she said. “It doesn’t matter. I just want to make great music for the fans. It’s going to be popular music, but I’m definitely going with [a] more rock, soul-inspired sound.” She recently revealed that she would be hitting the studio with Ne-Yo and RedOne for some new music, saying that she and RedOne have “a lot of ideas that we’re raging to get out of us.” Whether or not there will be a formal Scherzinger solo album, just this week the singer premiered her new track, “Nobody Can Change Me.” She was recently featured on Slash’s new album, singing a duet with Alice Cooper, “Baby Can’t Drive.” And she’s about to get her musical theater on, singing the title song from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new show , the “Phantom of the Opera” sequel “Love Never Dies.” Scherzinger raved about the experience, saying, “I had an amazing experience working with him in London on that song. I believe it’s going to be a part of the soundtrack. I’m a big musical theater fan. That was really huge … life-changing.” What do you want to see Nicole do next? Tell us in the comments! He was admitted to the hospital in Port Elizabeth last week and died on Tuesday. Ntshebe was scheduled to perform his new track Hope at the opening ceremony in Johannesburg on June 11. According to Nick Raphael, Epic boss, Ntshebe’s death was a tragedy for all those who believe in the power of music. His voice was truly wondrous and his music was unique in its melodies and the messages of hope and compassion are also truly inspiring. His new track Hope was a soaring track. It features a special message of hope and compassion which was written and spoken by Mandela. The track and an album with the same name were due to be released to go together with the World Cup. According to Pumza Fihlani in Johannesburg, Ntshebe was relatively not famous in South Africa. Lady Gaga Pre-Tapes ‘American Idol’ Performance

‘You’re my little monsters, and you’re the reason we all work so hard for our dreams,’ Gaga said from the stage at the Nokia Theatre. By Eric Ditzian Lady Gaga (file) Photo: Kevork Djansezian/ Getty Images While the viewing public tuning in to “American Idol” on Wednesday night caught Siobhan Magnus getting the ol’ heave-ho and Rascal Flatts, Shakira and Lady Antebellum taking the stage, one performance at the Nokia Theatre didn’t make it on to the small screen: Lady Gaga’s . After Wednesday evening’s elimination show wrapped, Gaga took over the Nokia to pre-tape an “Idol” performance set to air at a later date. But audience members were still holding steady in their seats, and many have since committed their thoughts and reporting to the Web (stop reading now if you want to experience the Gaga-tude spoiler-free whenever the perf hits the airwaves). By all accounts, it was a predictably massive undertaking, requiring an hour to re-set the stage, the introduction of a giant fire-spewing angel and three full performances of a “Bad Romance”/”Alejandro” medley. “I just want to say thank you,” Gaga told the crowd before launching into the number a third time, according to a write-up on EW.com’s PopWatch blog. “You’re my little monsters, and you’re the reason we all work so hard for our dreams.” The taping got started directly after the end of the live show. The “Idol” crew wheeled on that huge metallic angel, two black metal trees and a few park benches built of bloody razor blades. “[T]he entire set looked like the S&M version of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ meets the cemetery scene from ‘Phantom of the Opera’ populated by half-naked nymphs from ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ ” reported Zap2It.com . The first run-through was Gaga-free — just the band and her backup dancers. Gaga joined in for the second go. “There were eight hard-bodied male dancers scantily clad in what looked to be black Spanx — each guy wore a black glove as well,

American Idol top 5 2010

Siobhan Magnus was the one who lost favor with Idol voters this week. Ryan Seacrest, bidding her farewell, saluted her “independent spirit, laser focus, incredible work ethic” — but her problem was probably her mannerisms, notably the way she’d end a number by throwing back her head and sending out a high note that would have unnerved the Phantom of the Opera. After she performed Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” Tuesday night, Simon had observed that she sounded as if she were giving birth. To

Opera Mini iPhone Approved by iPhone

Opera Mini iPhone Approved by iPhone – This is the latest news about the newest trends in technology. According to Opera Software, Apple on Monday approved Opera Mini, the first alternative Web browser for its iPhone. According to a release put out by browser maker Opera earlier today, the company’s free Opera Mini browser for the iPhone and iPod touch family of devices has been approved by Apple and should appear in the App Store within 24 hours. Opera Mini is optimized to work on slower data connections and could prove valuable to iPhone users that spend time in areas without 3G coverage. It will help iPhone users most where the AT&T network is most congested, in places like New York and San Francisco. As Daring Fireball’s John Gruber pointed out, though, Opera Mini doesn’t actually render Web pages. That’s done on Opera’s servers; rather, Opera Mini renders a boiled-down, compressed markup language called OBML, making Opera Mini in some technical ways closer to a PDF reader than to a Web browser. Here’s the full press release: Opera today announced its popular mobile browser, Opera Mini has been approved for iPhone and iPod touch on the App Store. Opera Mini will be available as a free download within 24 hours, depending on market. Opera Mini, with more than 50 million users worldwide, enables fast mobile Web browsing by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the device, resulting in significantly improved page loading. Users of the app will notice an uptake in speed, especially on slower networks such as the 2G Edge network. Surfing the Web with the Opera Mini App on iPhone and iPod touch will also help users save money because of its data compression capabilities. This will hold especially true while the user is incurring roaming charges. “We are delighted to offer iPhone and iPod touch users a great browsing experience with the Opera Mini App,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “This app is another step toward Opera’s goal of bringing the Web to more people in more places.” Opera Mini iPhone Approved by iPhone is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
