Lil Wayne: Drake Selling 750,000 Not ‘A Problem’

‘We just want to get a perfect point across,’ YMCMB captain tells MTV News of valuing art over sales. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Travis Laurendine Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: John Shearer/Wireimage While performing on Sunday night’s American Music Awards , Drake had a moment. The Young Money MC was in the middle of the second verse to his single “Headlines” when he switched up the lyrics to reflect the projected first-week success of his sophomore album, Take Care. “If we talkin’ bout the numbers/ Man, it look like 700, they know,” Drake rapped in response to the Billboard prediction that he will debut atop the albums chart this week with as many as 700,000 copies sold. However, if you let Young Money head honcho Lil Wayne tell it, the numbers are not as important as the cultural impact. “As far as expectations, we don’t have those around here. Expectations are a weakness in the music business because if you expect anything, 10 times out of 10 it’s not gonna happen, so we don’t have expectations around here,” Lil Wayne told MTV News on Friday when we caught up with him on a trip to New Orleans where, he gave out Thanksgiving Turkeys in his old neighborhood on Saturday. “What we do expect is … to work very hard and we expect people to respect our hard work and our effort,” Weezy continued. “Now as far going to buy the album, as far as going to get 750,000 copies, that’s never a problem with us; that’s never important to us.” In 2008, Wayne sold more than a million copies of Tha Carter III in its debut week. And this past August, he moved 960,000 units of Tha Carter IV in the first seven days of release, but the Louisiana rhyme animal is more concerned with his Young Money artists making their creative mark. “Pardon me for sounding however I sound with this statement, but we rich as sh–, so numbers and record sales that doesn’t matter to none of us,” he said. Take Care hit retail last Tuesday, but leaked several days prior. After it hit the Net early, Drizzy didn’t seem too concerned about how the leak would affect his bottom line. Instead, he invited fans to a digital listening party. “Listen, enjoy it, buy it if you like it…and take care until next time,” he tweeted . Songs like the Rick Ross-assisted, Just Blaze-produced “Lord Knows” quickly became a trending topic on Twitter. So far, the critical opinion to the LP has been fairly positive. The Toronto artist blends rap bars and R&B melodies with equal expertise on the album, and even if some find it too different at first, Wayne hopes that eventually everyone will come around and recognize Take Care as a great body of work. “We just want to get a perfect point across, a swell opinion across,” he said. “We want our opinion to be different from everybody else’s opinion, but so different and so great that everybody else joins that opinion. And if we get that done with the album, mission accomplished.” Share your reviews of Take Care in the comments below! Related Artists Drake Lil Wayne

Paramore Look To Rediscover ‘Fun’ On New Album

In new interview, Paramore talk about moving on from the Farros and inspiring fans. By James Montgomery Paramore Photo: MTV News Paramore are moving forward, with a song-a-month “Singles Club” and plans for a new album in 2012. But in the new issue of Alternative Press (on newsstands December 1), they aren’t shying away from the past either. For the magazine’s cover story, Paramore discuss the departure of founding members Josh and Zac Farro last winter and how it forced them to realize that perhaps they had been approaching the business of being in a band from the wrong angle. Namely, they forgot all about the fun. “We’ve always enjoyed what we do,” guitarist Taylor York told the magazine, “but we’d watch other bands on tour with us, and they would just be having a blast. They’d be in vans, all cramming in one hotel room. Every day, they were just stoked to be there. In my head, I’m like, ‘Either they’re just really mistaken, or we’re missing something. I don’t think it’s possible to have that much fun.’ ” “I felt so bad for the longest time, because we made being in a band look like it wasn’t fun,” frontwoman Hayley Williams added. “In my opinion. Other people might not have thought that, but you imagine all the interviews we did where it was just like, ‘Uhh … ‘ ” Gee, wonder which interview she’s referring to? Still, after surviving the split with the Farros, Paramore rediscovered the joy of being in a band while on tour in South America, and that’s what gave them the desire to press on with a new album. “This winter, when Zac and Josh left, we went through a really hard time,” York said. “I think we had to go through that. We all love each other, but we had to come together so closely that we really rediscovered how much we really love each other — and how much we love playing music. We had to go through that to realize what we had.” Recharged, Paramore are pressing on with their new record — one that, from the sound of things, will be a spirited affair indeed. “It’s important for young people to know how much fun it is to make music with your friends,” Williams said. “You have to fight for it, of course, but it’s the biggest gift to play music for people, and it’s a gift even if you’re not playing for anybody. It’s fun, and I’m excited. We’re stoked to have that spirit revolving around this [forthcoming] album and just relax into the process.” What are you expecting from Paramore’s next album? Maksim Chmerkovskiy Calls Out Derek Hough, Won’t Apologize to Dancing With the Stars Judges

Maksim Chmerkovskiy sort of backed off his comments Monday about Dancing With the Stars being “his” show, but is still plenty pissed at the judges. Chmerkovskiy laid into Len Goodman , Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli after what he believed were scathing, personal critiques of his routine with Hope Solo. Lacey Schwimmer and Chaz Bono , who were eliminated Tuesday night, felt similarly and supported Maksim, but Ricki Lake’s partner Derek Hough took the judges’ side. That drew a stinging rebuke from Chmerkovskiy … “Derek Hough has been very supportive of his personal career on the show,” Maksim said in an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America . “With all due respect, if I had Nicole Scherzinger followed by Jennifer Grey followed by Ricki Lake, I probably would not be upset with the judges either.” Maksim wishes he hadn’t said in the heat of the moment that DWTS is “his” show and he is the reason for its success, acknowledging it’s a team effort. But he won’t praise the judges, either. “I had a long conversation with my dad and I don’t regret anything,” he reflected on GMA . “That’s why I think I’m misunderstood in this situation.” “Everyone is waiting for me to bow my head and plead for forgiveness. I have nothing to apologize for. I’m in the business because I love it.” “The one thing I’m not going to embrace is pointing fingers and disrespectful remarks,” he explained. “Why are judges allowed to compare us to animals and point their fingers and then we can’t say our side and show our opinion?” “I can’t really lose with remarks like this.” Whose side are you on?

Coldplay Call Mylo Xyloto A ‘Schizophrenic Album’

Band’s latest album ‘keeps changing sounds,’ frontman Chris Martin tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Gil Kaufman Coldplay’s Chris Martin Photo: John Shearer/ Getty Images It may be their best, biggest and boldest album yet, but Coldplay ‘s Chris Martin knows which adjective he would use to describe the band’s brand-new Mylo Xyloto : “It’s definitely a schizophrenic album … it keeps changing sounds,” he said. “That’s why we called it such a strange thing, Mylo Xyloto. Because we felt like so many people have already made up their minds about us, both good and bad, that we can sort of start again from scratch and try and reflect all the music we listen to and we love.” That sentiment is readily apparent throughout Xyloto, an album full of walloping electronics, soaring choruses and quiet, tender ballads. In a lot of ways, it plays very much like the band’s personal iPod, packing anthems like current single “Paradise” alongside artfully minimal instrumentals and hushed acoustic numbers like “U.F.O.” Even Rihanna shows up, lending her vocals to the track “Princess of China.” And that shuffling schizophrenia is due as much to the band’s taste as it is the ethos of frequent collaborator Brian Eno, a man who practically lives to break down boundaries. “Working with Brian, he was very much of the opinion that you should just be free to follow whatever you feel sounds best,” Martin said, “without worrying about having to talk about it in interviews and everything and explain it.” And, given all that, it’s somewhat fitting that Mylo Xyloto actually began life as a far different animal: a quiet, acoustic-based album. But as their songs began to grow, Coldplay quickly realized that their self-imposed parameters couldn’t contain their ambitions, so they scrapped them and started from scratch. And, not surprisingly, the end result is a record that defies convention — and, of course, definition too. “Very early on in the process of recording this record, we were playing a lot of acoustic instruments and we had it in our mind that we might try to record a small-sounding, intimate, reflective record,” drummer Will Champion explained. “And [a song like ‘Paradise’] came about, and it dawned on us that we couldn’t play it in that acoustic style. So we thought, ‘OK, we’ll finish this one and then we’ll do another record,’ and the realization came very quickly that we can’t really focus on more than one thing at once. “So we decided to put everything in one basket, and some of those songs from the acoustic thing survived — the song ‘Charlie Brown’ was originally in that format and ‘Us Against the World,’ ” he continued. “And I think putting all our eggs in one basket allowed us to kind of free everything up and allow the songs to dictate where they want to go.” What do you think of Mylo Xyloto ? Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ Video Is ‘Intense,’ Readers Say

Clip depicts love and loss, substance abuse and violence. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna on the set of her “We Found Love” video Photo: PUSHfotografik.com/Splash News Rihanna dropped her video for “We Found Love” this week, and the swirling clip is a look at both the sunny and dark sides of love. Directed by Melina Matsoukas (“Hard,” “S&M,” “Rude Boy,” “Rockstar 101”), the clip features Rihanna and British model/boxer Dudley O’Shaughnessy in a drug-fueled love affair full of lusty moments and heated fights. In the end, Rihanna walks away from it all, unable to deal with the pain of that lifestyle. The buzzy video certainly had fans talking. “This video reminds me of Sid Vicious and Nancy [Spungen], maybe not as bad as how Sid and Nancy were with each other but pretty intense,” Cristian noted in a comment. “This video is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced,” Kirsten said. “It stuns me from beginning to end, lighting this fire inside of me I forgot was there. The passion oozes out of the screen while this video is playing. Brilliant, just brilliant.” “Yes I Totally Agree Rihanna is fast becoming the new Madonna,” Kyle added. “She pushes the envelop and gives us something to think about however uncomfortable it may be. Hands down, this is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while. I guess I need to come out of my closet and show her some love openly.” While many fans commended Rihanna for her cinematic clip, it was hard for some not to note its depictions of domestic violence and drug use. “This video sends out the wrong message,” Deshea wrote. “It’s very graphic, nothing that they’re doing is love, it’s lust!” In the opinion of some commenters like Kevin, the video should stand without any judgment. “The video is real and I think ppl need to stop judging her and let her do her thing,” he said. “Music is supposed to provoke and invoke and that’s just what she’s doing. Stop hating on the things you don’t understand. Ppl are only out to judge. I ain’t a fan of hers but I don’t hate on her either because she’s a talent and she should be appreciated for the work that she does.” What do you think of Rihanna’s “We Found Love” video?
