Mobb Deep Slept On Notorious B.I.G., Lost Boyz

Prodigy and Havoc tell Mixtape Daily they ‘had tunnel vision.’ By Rob Markman Mobb Deep Photo: MTV News Celebrity Favorites: Mobb Deep Hip-hop is super competitive, and sometimes rappers spend so much time trying to outdo each other that they miss out on good music. For instance, in his book, the Queens rapper talks about turning down the chance to collaborate with the Notorious B.I.G. on his 1997 Havoc-produced track “Last Day.” Back then, Pee just wasn’t a fan, but hindsight is 20/20. “A lot of the people were coming on the block back in the days when Biggie had ‘Party and Bullsh–,’ his first record, and they would play it. I wasn’t into it,” Prodigy told Mixtape Daily . “I was focused on Mobb Deep. I had tunnel vision: I really didn’t give a f— what anybody was doin’ in rap music, except for Mobb Deep and Nas and our little circle. Everything else was irrelevant to me.” So irrelevant that when Havoc was enlisted to produce on Big’s 1997 sophomore LP, Life After Death , his partner-in-rhyme wanted no part of it. “I told Hav I just really didn’t want to do that. That was my opinion at that time,” Prodigy recalled. However, the H.N.I.C. eventually decided to give the Brooklyn legend one more chance. “I started liking Biggie. After he started heating up, I started re-listening to it. I was like, ‘This kid is alright. I like, son,’ ” Prodigy explained. “Sometimes that happens in life though.” Havoc attested to a similar situation: “I definitely wasn’t checking for other people. I missed a lot of stuff in the ’90s that I like now. I just had tunnel vision,” he said. “There was a lot of dope acts that was out back in the ’90s, like the Lost Boyz. I never paid attention to their stuff.” The Lost Boyz — a rap group from South Jamaica, Queens, New York — broke out in 1995 with their hit record “Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz,” and though they were known for high-powered party anthems, Hav wasn’t a fan in their heyday. He is today, though. “Now, when I look back on it and I listen to their stuff now, it’s like, ‘Yo, they had that sh–.’ They always kept the party poppin’. I really appreciate their music, and I’m glad that they made it,” he said. “That’s ill that they are even a part of the era that we came from.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out . Coon of the Day: GOP Rep. Allen West Calls Obama a ‘Low-Level Socialist’ Who ‘Never Even Ran a Lemonade Stand’

Florida Republican Representative, Allen West, took to Fox News yesterday and completely disrespected President Obama in an interview with the conservative news channel’s Greta Van Susteren yesterday. We all know that Fox is no fan of the first Black Family in any capacity and Brotha West went on record to express just how he feels. Not only did he fail to acknowledge him as President, he made a point to stress his middle name, “Hussein,” whenever he referred to him. As if that’s not disrespectful enough, he called him a ‘low level socialist agitator’ who ‘never even ran a lemonade stand.’ While it’s no surprise that the Fox correspondent completely agreed with West’s enflamed statements, this beesh starts bringing up old sh*t ‘out of curiosity!’ She questioned whether West believed that Obama was unaware of his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright’s, ‘appalling’ references to white people. And just like the coon he is for the day, he insinuated that President Obama wasn’t being honest about how he really feels. SMH Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) stood by eyebrow-raising remarks he recently made about President Barack Obama during an interview with Fox News host Greta Van Susteren on Thursday night. Speaking recently on “The Laura Ingraham Show,” West asserted that the president demonstrated “third world dictator-like arrogance” in delivering a speech on the federal budget and government spending. “I do stand by those words,” said the conservative congressman, who was elected into office last November with support from the Tea Party movement. “The truth needs to be said.” “I am sick and tired of this class warfare, this Marxist, demagogic rhetoric that is coming from the President of the United States of America,” West explained. “It is not helpful for this country and it’s not going to move the ball forward as far as rectifying the economic situation in our country. And I’m not going to back away from telling what the truth is.” The freshman lawmaker took issue with the way in which the president has regarded Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who recently introduced a controversial budget proposal for the next fiscal year. “I think that when you look at what a community organizer is turning out to be, it does seem to be like a low-level socialist agitator,” he said. Last weekend, West and Donald Trump were the keynote speakers at a Tea Party rally in Florida. The congressman told Newsmax at the time that he hopes the billionaire is serious about considering running for president in the next election cycle. “This is not a time for any jokes, games or gimmicks, and I hope he is very serious,” said West, who also declined to rule out running on a ticket with Trump in 2012. Allen, Trump, Fox News and the rest of the people who are completely displeased with Obama’s performance, that’s fine – they are entitled to their opinion – but they all deserve an emphatic HO. SIT. DOWN. The people voted and elected the current POTUS and If the GOP continues to showcase their jokes, also known as representatives and nominees, the 2012 election will be another easy sweep towards the left. That is all. Source

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Stop The Clock For Pia

Is it America’s fault Pia Toscano got the boot, or is it the judges’? By Jim Cantiello Pia Toscano on “American Idol” Photo: FOX Jim Cantiello’s “American Idol” in 60 Seconds recaps have been an institution at MTV News since Sanjaya’s Reign of Terror. La La Anthony Regrets TLC Hairdo On ‘When I Was 17’

‘Looking back, I’m like, ‘It looked great on her … not so much on me,’ ‘ she laughs. By Alex Mohr La La Anthony on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV News La La Anthony makes a return to her MTV roots — this time, however, she’s the one answering questions, not asking them. On this week’s episode of “When I Was 17” “When I was 17,” airing Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV, La La recalls a hairstyle that now has her asking: “What was I thinking?” The former MTV VJ is often seen cheering on new hubby and New York Knicks superstar Carmelo Anthony sporting her long, enviable locks courtside, but she remembers a time when her hair wasn’t always at the top of its game. The style she’s referring to was inspired by T-Boz of TLC fame. “It was like the mushroom cut with two strands of hair hanging here on the sides,” she dishes on the all-female episode, also featuring high school confessions from “Harry’s Law” actress Brittany Snow and “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson . While TLC were urging music fans not to chase waterfalls, it seems that girls all over were chasing their sense of style. La La was not alone in emulating T-Boz’s ‘do; she remembers walking into her hairdresser, and she knew instantly the style that she was asking for. “That was one of the most popular haircuts at the time,” Anthony laughed. “I thought I was the coolest thing walking.” The stylish star revealed high school photos of her and the hairstyle, and she admits that her opinion about the style has drastically changed. “Now, looking back, I’m like, ‘It looked great on her … not so much on me.’ ” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring La La Anthony, Brittany Snow and Ashley Benson — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Hayley Williams On Cosmo Cover: ‘Sexy Is Whatever You Want It To Be’

Paramore frontwoman says she hopes her Cosmopolitan cover will inspire fans, challenge the conventional notion of sexy. By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine Photo: Cosmopolitan Hayley Williams can currently be seen on the cover of the May issue of Cosmopolitan magazine and, somewhat understandably, she’s excited (“really excited”) about that fact. But rather than just let the photos speak for themselves, the Paramore singer has decided to talk about them — and her decision to do the cover shoot in the first place — in a new blog post on her band’s LiveJournal page . “I wanna talk about the Cosmo cover. It’s a little more than a big deal to me,” she wrote. “To the general public, Cosmo is either a) a woman’s obsession, or b) a woman’s demise … Honestly, either of the two options equal out to be the same damn thing. It’s easy to let all the images of all these Godlike-looking women whisper to us how we think we’re supposed to look. It’s like, ‘Here, look at my boobs! Don’t you wish you had these?’ “And you know what? It’s never gonna change,” she continued. “As much as I tell myself I don’t care and I wear whatever I want, there will always be those moments when I’m at the checkout line at Target and I see some gorgeous person on the cover of any ol’ rag, and I’m like, ‘Ugh, is that how it’s gotta be?’ Only to realize that, next month, that girl on the cover is gonna be me.” Williams then goes on to explain why she agreed to do the Cosmo cover, and how it fits into not only her role within Paramore, but her new outlook on life, as well. “My #1 goal when the band began was to make myself invisible. Not only did I not want to be the focal point, I wanted to be unseen! And honestly, it never made a difference,” she wrote. “It never made people focus on me any less … so this time I’m taking a different approach. All three of us in Paramore have our own roles, and finally I will accept mine. I’m going to be okay with being a ‘powerful female.’ And if that’s what it is, I’m going to use that role to make a difference. “Here’s my course of action,” she continued. “I will be myself. I will grow up. And I most definitely will find the time in my own life to be sexy if I feel like it. Who wrote the rules? Who said that a girl that lives in this same T-shirt and jeans nearly every day won’t wanna wear pumps and a short skirt tomorrow. And I’m hoping by seeing my crazy mug on a magazine cover, some girl who’s having a not-particularly-liberated day will think to herself that the May cover looks just a little different than the usual Cosmo cover and hopefully they can even be inspired. No, I don’t think I’m some kind of saving grace … but I do know that I never thought of myself as conventionally beautiful nor sexy. … I’m hoping that the more a magazine will take a chance on a girl like me, the more a girl will have a frickin’ chance in hell to be unique, powerful, strong in her weaknesses, confident in her flaws. Because that’s who I’m trying to become.” She closed by telling her fans that “sexy is whatever you want it to be … it’s up to you,” and then backed up that assertion by poking fun at the rather unfortunate cover line (“75 Sex Moves Men Crave”) that accompanied her image. “For the record, I really was hoping one of the headlines would be ’69 Ways to 69,’ but I guess it was a no go,” she wrote. “Honestly, I don’t think they could come up with that many.” What’s your opinion about what Hayley wrote regarding her appearance on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Paramore

Rosie O’Donnell Defends Chris Brown, Criticizes Robin Roberts, Implies Racism at Work

Looks like Chris Brown has an unlikely ally in the celebrity world: Rosie O’Donnell. The outspoken talk show host said on her radio show Friday that Chris’ detractors, along with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, may be guilty of racism . That’s because, O’Donnell, says, people criticized Brown’s window-breaking tantrum on GMA more than, she argues, the equivalent by white stars is lambasted. “I just don’t know why this kid seems to be held to a different standard than anyone else,” O’Donnell tells executive producer Janette Barber on the program. Asked if the reaction, which Rosie addressed for the first time because she had been on vacation, was racially based, O’Donnell replied, “I totally think [it] is.” “I also think it’s why he felt he was safer with Robin Roberts.” O’Donnell doesn’t flesh out this point at all other than later adding that she felt “badly” for Chris Brown and “mildly angry” at Roberts while the interview. Given the context, though, it wouldn’t be amiss to interpret it as an accusation of some sort of racial betrayal on Roberts’ part not to go easier on Brown. O’Donnell added that she thinks on some level “that there is a societal paradigm in which you have to be an angel or a thug if you’re a black male.” She argues that there is a pattern of maligning black male stars as violent when a white star’s behavior might be more easily forgiven. But is this true? Brown throws a chair through a window and everyone panics. Kanye West grabs a mic way from Taylor Swift and is torn to shreds by the press. Meanwhile, Charlie Sheen becomes a weird drug-infused performance art folk hero. It’s a little strange. But Brown also committed domestic violence. O’Donnell’s point of defense for Brown does have some merit, but Rosie never addressed the elephant in the room ( Rihanna ), weakening her case a bit. At least in our opinion. What do you think of her comments?
