Trey Songz Recalls His Barbershop Days On ‘When I Was 17’

‘I cut everybody’s hair for the prom,’ the singer says on new MTV show, premiering Saturday. By Jayson Rodriguez Trey Songz Photo: MTV News We all know Trey Songz is a ladies man, but the extent of his devotion to the opposite sex hasn’t truly been revealed until now. “When I was 17 I did my girlfriend’s eyebrows,” the singer confesses during the premiere of MTV’s new show “When I Was 17,” which premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. and also features Khloe Kardashian and Perez Hilton. But to be fair, Trey Songz was a barber-in-training at the time, keeping the fellas and the ladies looking sharp. It all started when he devised a plan to receive early dismissal from school and enrolled in a trade that he thought he would be able to take lightly. Instead, the Virgina native found himself with an intense schedule that included learning the finer points of hair care, from cutting heads to, well, waxing eyebrows. His skills eventually became so in demand that his friends lined up at his house to score haircuts before prom. “I cut everybody’s hair for the prom,” he recalled. “That whole week of prom, like every day, probably at least five to 10 guys would come over to the house to get a shape-up,” his cousin Jay chimed in. The downside to his popularity with his clippers resulted in some hotheaded customers — literally! “My clippers got so hot, I remember I messed my homeboy’s head up so bad,” he recalled, smiling. “He had scars for, like, the next two days. [ Traces his hair line to show where the damage was done. ] All that. My bad.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Trey Songz, Khloe Kardashian and Perez Hilton — premieres Saturday (May 1) at 11 a.m. on MTV. Related Artists Trey Songz

The Young Veins’ Take A Vacation!: The Joke’s On You

Ryan Ross and Jon Walker emerge from Panic! at the Disco with a crackling new album, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Young Veins Photo: One Haven Music Last month, as I stood in a half-filled Austin, Texas, dive bar watching Ryan Ross, Jon Walker and the rest of the Young Veins fumble and fuss with their vintage guitars and organs, I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for them. When Ross’ girlfriend (the Like’s Elizabeth “Z” Berg) began crawling around onstage, attempting to hook up her guitar pedals for him — because, as Ross would tell me later, he had “forgotten” his — I somehow felt a lot worse. After all, this was Ryan Ross, the same kid I had watched stalk the stage at a sold-out (and very loud) arena in 2006 , the same brilliant boy-child who had written one of my favorite albums of 2008 . I had such high hopes for him. The sky truly seemed like it was the limit. But then, he left Panic! at the Disco , posed precariously close to a plate of well-manicured cocaine in a now-infamous photo and disappeared into the hills of Hollywood with Walker to work on a record that would presumably never see the light of day. Either Ross was getting truly terrible career advice, or he had fallen victim to the same thing that had snared so many before him: ego. He had believed the hype, had squandered all that potential and this Austin gig — and a thousand more just like it — would be his penance. It was, for all intents and purposes, over for him. Only, here’s the thing. While the Veins’ set that night wasn’t particularly excellent — it was, after all, only their third show to date — there was something there: a buoyant, playful charm and a jovial jolt, even if the guitars didn’t sound all that great and Ross’ voice got buried in the mix way too often. This didn’t feel the least bit like a funeral — quite the opposite, in fact. Ross and Walker cracked jokes and exchanged wry smiles, exuding the same vibe I got from them toward the end of Panic!’s lifespan . It was, in some small way, like they were still playing an arena (albeit an arena that smelled like beer) and that they were privy to a very secret joke, one they weren’t quite sure they wanted to share with the world. Needless to say, I left the gig feeling a bit puzzled. But a few weeks later, back in New York and thoroughly deodorized, I finally understood what they were laughing about: I received an advance copy of the Veins’ debut album, Take a Vacation! (due June 8), a crackling, lightning-quick effort — 11 songs in just 29 minutes — that’s equal parts salty and sweet, heavily indebted to the past, unbelievably catchy and quite possibly the best joke you’ll hear all year. In other words, it’s pretty much everything I could ask for in a rock record, and then some. Working with producers Rob Mathes and Alex Greenwald (formerly of Phantom Planet), Ross and Walker have made an album that is totally, 100 percent theirs. Holed up in Calabasas, California, they listened to a ton of old 45s, probably smoked some funny cigarettes, watched the sun rise, made bonfires in the hills, invited all their friends over to sing on the choruses and cranked out songs that bear no resemblance to the rock music of today (and, by logical extension, have positively no chance of getting played on modern rock radio). They took the parts of Panic! at the Disco’s last album that fans liked least — the strummy, sunny, really excellent ones (“Northern Downpour,” etc.) — and made an entire record of them. And they did this all basically because they wanted to. It’s their own private joke (or their own private psychedelic reel ), one they eventually decided to share with the world. Buy only after they were good and ready to. And that’s probably what I like most about Vacation! — the fact that it’s deeply personal, important mostly to Ross and Walker. These are the songs they’ve wanted to write, even while the other half of Panic! seemed headed in the opposite direction. And so, they left the band and did their own thing. Repercussions and public opinion be damned. There are plenty of great musical moments too — the “aah-aah-aahs” and undeniable chorus of “Cape Town,” the enchantment-under-the-sea-worthy ballad “Everyone but You,” the campy stomp of “The Young Veins (Die Tonight),” smoky and ebullient album-closer “Heart of Mine” — but it’s that dogged determination to do their own thing, even if it means a lifetime of fumbling with vintage guitars in Texas dive bars that stands out most to me. It’s like Ross sings on “Other Girl,” just before the tune breaks out in a stony, sunrise-approved guitar solo: “You were right, I was wrong/ Like I always am, and you always are.” There are probably a million people he could be directing the line toward, only you know he doesn’t really care about any of them. He’s fumbling and stumbling to the beat of his own drummer now. Who cares about the future when you’ve got the past? Questions? Concerns? Hit me up at BTTS@MTVStaff.com .

Taking Back Sunday’s Adam Lazzara Talks Reunion, ‘Group Dynamic’

‘There’s this excitement and urgency embedded in the songs now,’ the frontman says. By James Montgomery Taking Back Sunday Photo: Brian Apppio Taking Back Sunday’s last album was titled New Again , a rather appropriate handle for several reasons, chiefly because they just had replaced singer/guitarist Fred Mascherino with new axeman Matt Fazzi (but also because, over the course of a decade, TBS had shed something like five different members). So one has to wonder what their next album will be called, because — to the delight of many — they’ve mended fences with former members John Nolan and Shaun Cooper (and parted ways with Fazzi and bassist Matt Rubano), bringing the band back to their 2002 Tell All Your Friends heyday. Perhaps Old Again ? “Well, having John and Shaun back in the band has nothing to do with any of the old records — it has everything to do with being happy and what’s good for the group dynamic,” TBS frontman Adam Lazzara told MTV News. “Because if things kept going the way they were going, there wouldn’t have been another record at all.” Lazzara wouldn’t get into specifics about just what drove the band to split with Fazzi and Rubano, only saying that “it started to get to the point where the thing that used to work to our favor — the five totally different personalities — started to get to a point where it worked in the opposite way,” and added that he holds no ill will towards either man. Quite the opposite, in fact. “Every person you encounter in your life, you learn a little something different from them, and I think that’s a cool thing. I had an opportunity to share this big part of me with these two guys, and they were both amazing,” he said. “[Fazzi] turned me to a lot of different bands and he exposed me to a lot of new ideas. [Rubano] was one of the best bass players that I’ve ever seen. With him, a lot of times, I remember getting lost in what he was playing. Just thinking about the conversation we had, it makes my stomach knot up … but it got to the point where the bad times started to outweigh the good.” What he would expound upon was the first meeting with Nolan and Cooper, who both left TBS under decidedly weird circumstances (chalk it up to “personal reasons”) which were so heavy that Lazzara didn’t speak with Nolan for more than seven years. Until January, when — at the insistence of drummer Mark O’Connell — the two got on the phone together and the drama of past disappeared almost instantly. “Mark had some crazy ideas, and sometimes they’re dead on. And one day he called me and was like, ‘Hey man, what do you think about us going back to our original lineup?’ And I was like, ‘Are you crazy? I haven’t talked to John in like, seven years. I don’t know if he’d want to do it,’ ” Lazarra said. “But he kept bringing it up, and then I got a call from John, and when he called, it felt like no time had passed. It felt like we had just talked a few days ago. We didn’t start off talking about making music together — we were getting reacquainted with what had been going on in our lives. Because for me, I genuinely missed his friendship, and same with Shaun. “So when it started, it was more like I was happy to have this person back in my life. And then as those conversations went on, we started to send music back and forth … and we were realistic about it. We both thought, ‘There’s a great chance this might not work,’ ” he continued. “But then it got to the point where we were like, ‘Oh man, I think this could work.’ So we got together down in Texas, right near Juarez, Mexico, and right when we walked into that room and strapped instruments on, and the songs were just there. And what would typically take Taking Back Sunday six months to do we did in a week.” Inspired, TBS announced the reunion to the world , and they’re already making plans to get back into the studio to flesh those songs out. The plan, according to Lazzara, is to record with Eric Valentine (who recorded their 2006 album Louder Now ) and hopefully have an album out later this year. But just what will the new (old) Taking Back Sunday sound like? It’s still too early to tell. “With us it’s all growth, all the time. The music is always trying to move forward,” he laughed. “It’s not the kind of thing where we went in and all sat around the table and were like, ‘OK, this part has got to be like something from the first album.’ All I know is that there’s this excitement and urgency embedded in the songs now. You can’t fake it.” What do you think of Taking Back Sunday reuniting? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Taking Back Sunday

Robert Pattinson Lacks Confidence

In Remember Me , Robert Pattinson plays Tyler. He’s a straight shooter, someone that’s confident in his ability to attract the opposite sex. Considering his appearance, one would assume Pattinson possesses this same trait in real life. But one would be mistaken. “When it comes to the opposite sex, I’m not as fully confident as [Tyler,” the actor tells Parade in its latest issue. “I don’t even remember the last time I asked someone out on a date… I’m much more self-conscious and not wanting to fail. So I tend to hold back.” That may have something to do with the fact that he doesn’t need to, of course. Rob is dating Kristen Stewart . As for Robert’s ultimate goal? He touched on that, and a few other topics, in the magazine interview : On his personal ambition : You keep trying to make your name stand for something other than just like meaningless celebrity. It’s a difficult battle, but I think people like Johnny Depp have done that. He’s not judged by his public image, it’s just his acting that counts. To get to that place takes a lot of discipline and a lot of hiding. On box office pressure : People always used to ask me about typecasting and I never had to really worry about it. You think people will judge you by your work. But the truth is, it’s about whether the film you’re in makes money or not. On his past : I got beaten up by a lot of people when I was younger. I was a bit of an idiot, but I always thought the assaults were unprovoked. It was after I first started acting and I liked to behave like an actor, or how I thought an actor was supposed to be, and that apparently provoked a lot of people into hitting me.

Fashion Face-Off: Taylor Swift vs. Carmen Electra

One os a multiple-tme Grammy winner. The other often appears topless in magazine spreads. One is a globally respected, conservative, innocent, 20-year old recording artist. The other has gotten naked in Playboy many times. On the surface, Taylor Swift and Carmen Electra have nothing in mind. Then again, on the surface, Tiger Woods didn’t seem like the type of guy that would need to read a prepared statement that apologized for his countless transgressions with the opposite sex. It turns out that Taylor and Carmen do have one thing in common: fashion taste. Case in point: Who wears this outfit better?
