Kony 2012 Campaign Catches Eyes Of Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga

Campaign aims to bring African militia leader Joseph Kony to justice for war crimes and for enlisting children as soldiers. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News A campaign to stop the nearly 30-year, brutal rule of African militia leader Joseph Kony became a viral sensation this week. “Kony 2012,” started by the group Invisible Children, aims to make Kony’s face so famous that authorities will finally be able to arrest him and try him for his crimes. A 30-minute documentary released on Monday is one of the keys to the campaign, and as of Thursday it had gotten more than 26 million views. The video details the atrocities carried out by Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army. The campaign appears to be working, as at one point on Wednesday, Invisible Children and #stopkony were trending higher on Twitter than Peyton Manning or the new iPad. Since 1987, human rights officials say Kony has forcefully abducted more than 60,000 children to be soldiers in his army and reportedly raped, mutilated and killed civilians in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan and displaced more than 2 million people. The leader is wanted for committing atrocities by the International Criminal Court and is being hunted down by 100 U.S. Special Forces advisers and local troops in four Central African nations, according to the Associated Press. Kony 2012 is an effort to capture Kony and disarm the LRA before a reported window of opportunity closes. One way it plans to do that is by encouraging users to directly message a variety of stars to make use of their Twitter ubiquity to get the word out. Among those listed on the site are: Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Angelina Jolie, Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Jay-Z, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Ryan Seacrest and Ellen DeGeneres, along with a number of major policymakers. By Rya Backer Miguel Photo: MTV News It might’ve been a First Date with Miguel , but Miguel had been around long before he and I took to the grill at Gyu-Kaku. With 2010’s “All I Want Is You,” featuring J. Cole, the singer defined himself with a sound and image that can’t quite be classified: a little R&B, a little hip-hop, a little sexy and a lot of swag. Despite all those adjectives, he’s nothing but a genial, level-headed and funny guy in person, and he hopes for a girl with the same outlook. “I think that life should be lived on the light side; there’s enough bullsh– that we deal with. Having a sense of humor makes things a lot easier,” he explained when asked what the most important trait for his lady ought to be. The 25-year-old crooner showed up to our date dressed to impress: sporting tailored, jade trousers, a rust-colored coat and suspenders, Miguel’s interest in fashion is evident upon first glace. In fact, he considers following it to be one of his prime interests outside of making music. His other non-musical hobbies remain creative: He cited iconic ’80s artist Jean-Michel Basquiat as one of his greatest influences and photography as another passion of his, finding David LaChappelle’s work especially compelling. But like any artist, he hopes to inspire just as much: “I really hope to come to a place where I’ve achieved some kind of trust with my audience. Pattie Mallette, Mother of Justin Bieber, to Pen Memoir

Come September, Justin Bieber will no longer be his family’s only author. The superstar, who signed a second book deal last month, will soon need to make room for his mother, Pattie Mallette. Her memoir “Nowhere But Up: The Story of Justin Bieber’s Mom,” will come out on 9/18/12 and center on her journey from a troubled teen… to the single parent of a global sensation. Referring to others that have suffered through similar experiences – abuse, trauma, addiction – Pattie says of the book: “I want them to see that no matter how desperate their circumstances may be, they can have hope for a better future.” Agrees Jennifer Leep, the editorial director at publishing company Revell: “Pattie’s story is a powerful example of courage and determination that will inspire anyone who has faced struggles in life. Whitney Houston Will Leaves Everything to Bobbi Kristina

Whitney Houston may have died unexpectedly on February 11, but the singer at least had the good fortune to plan ahead. In a 19-page document obtained by Inside Edition , it’s revealed that Whitney left absolutely everything to her teenage daughter. This includes personal wealth, furniture, clothing jewelry and cars. The money will be placed in a trust – with Whitney’s mother, Cissy, serving as executor – until Bobbi Kristina, who turned 19 on March 4, is 21 years old. She then gets more cash when she turns 25 and the rest when she’s 30. Houston initially drafted the will in 1993, but amended it to the current version in April 2000. Bobbi Kristina, meanwhile, will sit down with Oprah Winfrey for her first interview since her mom’s passing this Sunday evening on OWN.

According to TMZ reports : Oprah Winfrey has finally found a way to get people to watch OWN — she’s scored an interview with family members of Whitney Houston, including daughter Bobbi Kristina. The show “Oprah’s Next Chapter” will feature Houston’s only daughter … as well as Patricia Houston, her sister-in-law and manager, and Houston’s brother Gary. It is scheduled to air next Sunday. Oprah was one of the guests invited to Houston’s funeral in Newark, NJ last month. Amber Portwood: Denied Access to Teen Mom Reunion

Troubled star Amber Portwood will not be present as the cast members of Teen Mom and Teen Mom 2 head to NYC this weekend to participate in a reunion special. Amber’s mom, Tonya, tells E! that the judge overseeing her daughter’s probation denied permission for her to leave Anderson, Ind., to participate in the event. “He thinks it will interfere with her program,” says Tonya. Probably right. But despite the setback, Amber isn’t sweating it too hard. It wasn’t long ago before it looked like her filming days were done altogether. Now that she’s living at her grandma’s , the show may go on … ankle monitor style , but still. “I’m happy. Just stressed, but I’m happy,” says Portwood. Last week, she was released from the Madison County correctional facility where she had been since December after being busted for drug possession. Portwood is staying with her grandparents as she attends eight months of rehab at Sister 2 Sister Ministries (which won’t let her film Teen Mom there). If she were to violate her strict probation in any way, Amber Portwood faces a maximum of five years in prison on her felony drug-possession charge. Her baby daddy, Gary Shirley, posted on Facebook that he and their 3-year-old daughter, Leah, are flying to New York to participate in the special.
