How do we boycott BP?

Could we choose an other gas station to fill our tanks? Where do we go? Exxon? Shell? They are all EVIL! They are all destroying our world and we are part of the problem and always will be. Deliberately or not we are all accomplices until we do something about it. The core spirit of the Organic Legion's movement is to eradicate a problem, boycotting the source. Why wasting our time and effort to get a ban on plastic bags or stopping the next offshore/onshore oil drilling that will cause more environmental catastrophes when we could stop this altogether? Stop oil dependency and the oil monopoly now. Alternative, safe technologies exist and work effectively, enough to power every vehicle and every home in America and all over the world. Stop this EVIL now, they run the economy and our lives. They are contaminating our soil, our water and the future of our children and generations to come. We are the people, we are the almighty, we can change things. Let's unite and rise as one to stop this poison that is here to stay and this cruel greed. Do we really want to wait until everything turns to “black” to realize what's happening? WE hold a power, the power to change things once and for all. Nobody can't take that away from us! Sign the petition below: http://environment.change.org/petitions/view/no_more_drill_baby_drill Thank you for taking action by stopping the oil dependency and its monopoly on our economy, environment and our lives. Weekday Vegetarian: Fantastic Fava Bean Puree

I’ve always stayed away from making anything with fava beans because inevitably the recipe will say how much work they are. The idea of shelling the beans and then having to peel each one of them seemed like a ridiculous amount of effort. On the other hand, people are positively rhapsodic about how delicious they are. Faced with a big bin of fava beans at my organic grocery, I figured, what the heck, give them a try…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Bring Down Monsanto…

Take action now and let's bring down Monsanto: 70% percent or more of our food contains genetically engineered food brought by the bio-tech giant: Monsanto. GMO is endangering people's health and our environment at an alarming rate. Cross-contamination is irreversible and good, organic crops are being jeopardized. These seeds are incredibly expensive compared to the traditional ones and have been genetically modified to produce their own pesticide, to survive the spraying of the: “Roundup”, a potent herbicide and to self terminate. This has lead our farmers to buy new GMO seeds each year and depend on Monsanto. As a result of this ruthless drive to use India as a testing ground for genetically modified crops, 125,000 farmers took their own lives. These people were driven to debt, to economic distress, homeless and landless. GMO has and is failing catastrophically. This company is persecuting, bullying and bringing farms to bankruptcy. GMO was never adequately tested for safety, actually more and more research shows its dangers to the human/animal health, polluting our crops and our water. Monsanto did use false advertising; Monsanto poisons the third world and privatizes water. Its employees have passed through the so-called revolving door many times, they rotated between this industry and the public agencies: Clarence Thomas, Gwendolyn S. King, Linda Fisher, Jim Travis, Linda Avery Strachanand, Toby Moffet , Marcia Hale, Donald Bandle, George H. Poste, Michael Kantor and Michael Taylor all bending rules, finding loopholes to assure this company profits. This technology is only exacerbating hunger, poverty, irreversible contamination and climate change in our world. Bring down Monsanto's monopoly on our food and a centralized agriculture. Bring down Monsanto's genetically engineered seeds. Bring down the use of harmful pesticides, herbicides and chemicals alike. Hold this company accountable for its damages to the world. Organic agriculture, permaculture and biodiversity are the only answer to sustainability, to the preservation of our environment and our health. We want you, as our government, as a body of representation of the people of the United States to invest billions subsidizing organic, environmental agriculture. Bring down Monsanto's poisoning, companies alike and the agrochemical industry once and for all as it is one of the greatest threats to the whole human race. Thank you. Is Kirstie Alley’s New Weight Loss Program a Scientology Scam? [Scams]

Anti-Scientology campaign group Anonymous, and some blogs, are airing accusations that Scientologist Kirstie Alley ‘s new weight loss program, Organic Liaison , is based on quackery preached by L. Ron Hubbard, and that the company has links to the ‘church’. Alley, who is herself still not at her stated target weight of 140lbs, has been shilling for her new venture on Oprah, and it features heavily (pun intended) in her upcoming A&E reality series, Kirstie Alley’s Big Life (pun intended there too, we’re sure). Anonymous have found links between Organic Liaison LLC and Scientology — the firm’s accountant, Saul B Lipson, is a known Scientologist whose company is approved by the church and based near its headquarters in Clearwater, Florida. Along with utter quacks like Hollywood mystical doctor Soram Khalsa , the board features Michelle Seward, an active Scientologist. While this is not enough to support Anonymous’ claim that money from Organic Liaison will be channeled directly into the church, it does lend credence to the assertion that the program itself is, to some extent, based on a Scientology plan called the purification rundown . This was prescribed by L. Ron Hubbard himself, but criticized for being at best bullshit that claims to detox through vitamins, minerals, drinking vegetable oil and sitting in saunas, and at worst dangerous. As it is part of the Narconon program, that Alley has said helped her break a cocaine addiction, it is fairly safe to presume she has been through it. Organic Liaison offers to combine an organic food diet with “organic and natural diet supplements that replenish your body with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients without the pangs of starvation or cravings you may have felt on other diet plans.” It’s certainly priced like a Scientology scam. Membership costs $10 per month, or $89 for a year, and the package of supplements, called Rescue Me, is a whopping $139 per month. One you’ve ordered the kit, it auto-ships and bills your card again every month until you stop it. The kit contains three supplements, Rescue Me (claimed detox and appetite suppresser), Release Me (claimed relaxant) and Nightingale (claimed sleep aid), featuring many cheaply-available vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and aids like vitamin C, folic acid, L-Tryptophan, fiber, green tea, calcium and magnesium. The company also offers other supplements — notably Relieve Me, an anti-constipation supplement that Anonymous claim is related to Cal-Mag, a noxious-sounding dietary liquid developed by Hubbard that contains calcium, magnesium, vinegar and hot water. And that led some of those church members forced to drink it to, um, relieve themselves. The evidence, while suggestive, is by no means conclusive. What is safe to say is that thousands, millions even, of people will be over-paying for unproven herbal supplements combined with a common-sense diet. We’ll do some of our own digging into Organic Liaision, and its connection to Scientology, and see if it comes back Clear. [ Pic via A&E ]

This Emerging Food Source May Get Banned from Organic (and it’s not GMOs)

The USDA's National Organic Standards Board (NOSB), which determines which products can be certified organic and carry the valuable organic sticker, is leaning against allowing innovative growing systems, such as aquaponics, from the program. Why? Because, according to their logic, food not grown in soil cannot be organic, even if no pesticides, herbicides or hormones are used. Yet vegetables grown in recirculating systems are proven to have exactly the same nutritional value as any other and are perfectly healthy. Decades of research have shown this. Many vegetables on our store shelves now are grown hydroponically, but this question of plant health or nutritional value has not come up. In a system like aquaponics, the roots are anchored onto some grow media, such as gravel or coconut fiber. Water flows through this easily, bringing the nutrients required by the plants, especially nitrates, which is a byproduct of the ammonia produced by fish as waste. A root does not care about “soil.” It cares about light, heat, structure, water, oxygen, nitrates, phosphorous and potassium. The physical structure of dirt provides an anchor for the roots to grab, but other than that, earth is just a grow medium, the same as gravel or fiber. Give a plant as much of what it needs, and it will grow like crazy. So where does this notion come from, that plants not grown in the bosom of Mother Earth are somehow not eligible for designation as organic? At least part of the answer comes from a religious belief that soil itself is sacred. According to one NOSB Board member, soil-less systems in Europe and Canada are not permitted to show the organic label because some Board members apparently put belief ahead of reason. The biodynamic movement is tilted in this direction, based on aspects of Rudolph Steiner's philosophy. Steiner is the German founder of Waldorf Schools, which are based on his theory of anthroposophy. This coming March, the NOSB will formally put forth its recommendations for public comment, then they will make a final judgment. Between now and then various leaders from the aquaculture, hydroponics and greenhouse industries are developing a formal response, with hopes that the NOSB will listen to reason. The advantages of having the organic label are huge. It will give an official stamp of approval on the concept of aquaponics for entrepreneurs, small and large, who can see its obvious advantages. This will encourage investment and growth of small, decentralized food production, something that is essential to the concept of economic sustainability. The economic value will drive education and practice of urban agriculture and aquaculture, which will in turn create jobs and further investment. More organic food, more local, more involvement of the little guy, which includes inner-city African Americans and rural whites, who generally are not considered part of the organic consumer base. As a model for this, one need only look at Growing Power in Milwaukee. If you haven't heard of it, it is the quintessential model of the multi-faceted value of urban agriculture. http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/organic-hydroponics-46011… — What do you think? Are aquaponics not organic or is this requirement for soil a silly rule? added by: Nettle

Excerpt: “Many of those are also used in products such as household cleaners, and have been linked to a number of health problems from allergies and skin sensitivity to more serious hormonal disturbances, fertility problems and even cancer. Parabens, for example, which are designed to preserve the shelf-life of your cosmetics, are one of the most widely used preservatives in the world, and are found in shampoos, hair gels, shaving gels and body lotions. But their use is becoming increasingly controversial – a range of different studies has linked them to serious health problems including breast cancer, as well as fertility issues in men.
