I’m not sure about the other European critics, but so far the U.K. critics here seem to love one picture above all others: Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy , an adaptation of John Le Carré’s 1974 novel, stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, the deposed British spy who must find the mole who’s compromising MI6 — or “the circus” — in order to put the organization, and his life, back together. In addition to being based on an enormously popular book, Alfredson’s picture is also haunted by a ghost: The 1979 TV mini-series, which featured Alec Guinness in the George Smiley role. Who’d want to try to top that?
Surprise, surprise a Republican has proven to be a hypocrite… Republicans who support gay rights have seen their brief hopes for Rick Perry’s candidacy dashed as old quotes surface, new pledges are signed and news of his forthcoming campaign events and associations emerges. The Texas governor and leading presidential candidate briefly gave hope to the increasingly influential group of Republican LGBT advocates when he expressed his support for the rights of states to pass their own legislation governing marriage. Since then, however, he has said he would back a constitutional amendment banning the practice, while quotes from an old book surfaced in which he compared homosexuality to alcoholism. On Friday, meanwhile, Perry signed the National Organization for Marriage’s pledge that would, among other things, commit him to support sending a federal marriage amendment to states upon becoming president. But the icing on the cake could come this weekend, when Perry is set to mingle with one of the most virulently anti-gay activists and prominent social conservative donors in his home state. The event, officially labeled a “call to action,” will feature a retreat at a Texas Hill Country ranch. Among the event’s hosts will be David Barton, an evangelical leader and founder of the organization WallBuilders. Barton is most commonly known for holding revisionist historical views, specifically regarding the history of civil rights. But his incendiary stance on LGBT issues has made him an object of intense concern for both progressives who monitor right-wing figures and for Republicans who support gay rights. Most recently, when the state of New York legalized same-sex marriage, Barton argued that anti-gay groups should proverbially “scalp” the four Republican state senators who had backed the bill. He added some choice words for Ken Mehlman, the former RNC Chairman turned LGBT activist, as well. Perry’s fellow Republican comrades are less than pleased with his decision to say the least. “It is unfortunate Governor Perry decided to turn to a big government, anti-conservative position by signing the National Organization for Marriage’s pledge,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans. “This pledge is out of step with America and the general electorate the GOP needs to win the White House.” Translation: “This mickiefickie is gonna F up our chances of winning this election by pissing off all the voting fa-, er…homosexuals.” SMH Source

A First Lady is nothing without an initiative, so I appreciate Michelle Obama for choosing food and fitness as hers. When I was a kid we were inundated with Drug Abuse Residence Education aka DARE. The only thing I got out of that was a t-shirt. DARE wasn’t really fun. You signed a pledge, committed to never join a gang, do drugs, or abuse alcohol. I still frequent happy hour. (As an aside, DARE lost its federal grant funding in 1998, after failing to meet federal guidelines that the organization be both research based and effective. ) Kids today see their First Lady exercising; she extols the virtues of better health, fitness, and has some fabulous arms to boot! These kids get to dance—with Beyoncé(!!) no less, and they’re learning how to make better nutritional decisions. With the Let’s Move! campaign, the FLOTUS is determined to make sure every household has access fresh fruits, vegetables and other high quality food products at affordable prices. Calling Bishop Eddie Long his “friend” and “brother in the Lord,” World Changers Church pastor Creflo Dollar scolded former New Birth Missionary Baptist Church members, saying they need to return to New Birth. He added that if any ex-New Birth members were thinking of joining his College Park megachurch, they need to look elsewhere. Dollar’s sermon is also being criticized for comparing the sexual misconduct charges Bishop Eddie Long faced to a car wreck and having insurance. No stranger to controversy himself, Dollar’s Creflo Dollar Ministries received a grade of “F” for financial transparency by the organization MinistryWatch . As we previously reported, Long recently settled the high-profile case out of court despite a previous vow to fight the charges against him. What do y’all think about Creflo Dollar’s sermon? Star opens up about eating disorder while teaming up with Seventeen to help others. By James Dinh Demi Lovato Photo: Hearst Communications/The Jed Foundation After her sudden exit from her tour with the Jonas Brothers and a three-month stay at a treatment center , Demi Lovato is looking to use her own personal struggles to help other troubled teens. Earlier this week, she announced she was teaming up with Jed Foundation’s Love Is Louder Than the Pressure to Be Perfect campaign and Seventeen magazine, and in a PSA for the campaign released Thursday (April 14), the 18-year-old singer/actress opens up about the movement and advises others where they should turn to when feeling burdened. “There’s a ton of pressure out there to meet impossible standards,” Lovato says sitting before a white backdrop. “To look right, be smart, be thin, talented and popular. And many of us feel like we have to be everything to everyone, but it doesn’t have to be that way. When the pressure to be perfect is overwhelming, find an outlet. I love to paint, but there are also other ways to relieve that pressure. You can sing, dance, act, draw, shoot photos, write or run.” Lovato, who admitted in the upcoming issue of Seventeen that she does in fact struggle with an eating disorder, explains in the video that there are many people who deal with the same issues and advises fans to spread the Love Is Louder message. “If you’re going through a dark period, remember that you’re not alone,” she continues. “You can get help and you can feel better, so join me in spreading this message by snapping a photo of yourself with the message love is louder and the pressure to be perfect.” Courtney Knowles, executive director of the Jed Foundation, spoke to MTV News about why he believed the teen star was the perfect candidate to represent the Love Is Louder movement. (MTV teamed up with the Jed Foundation and actress Brittany Snow last fall to launch Love Is Louder in response to teen suicides connected to bullying.) “I think her story really resonates with a lot of girls. I think it already did,” Knowles said. “There had been a lot of speculation about what she had been through and … the fact that she’s so brave, that she’s willing to talk about these sensitive issues openly is really important, because part of the problem is so many teenagers don’t want to seem like they’re failing at anything, so they don’t talk about this. And without addressing the problem, you can never feel better.” As for whether Lovato will participate in any future Love Is Louder campaigning, Knowles revealed that the he and her team are still working out the details. “We don’t have a specific schedule yet, but she certainly is onboard to spread the message and for it to reach more teenage girls and young women,” he said. Lovato is also serving as a contributing editor for Seventeen, where she’s expected to write bi-monthly posts on Seventeen.com and contribute to the magazine’s coverage of issues facing teen girls. Knowles told MTV News that Lovato and Seventeen approached the organization about teaming up to create “something bigger than just the story.” In the May issue of the mag, which hits news stands April 19, the Disney starlet opened up about her battle with an eating disorder and what she’s learned since her days leaving treatment. Asked whether she ever felt pressure to pick up old habits, the star admitted “there have been times” when she was tempted to get rid of her dinner. “But I will deal with it for the rest of my life because it’s a life-long disease,” said the teen star. “I don’t think there’s going to be a day when I don’t think about food or my body, but I’m living with it, and I wish I could tell young girls to find their safe place and stay with it.” Since leaving treatment for “emotional and physical issues” in late January, Lovato confessed that she has given herself “a lot of freedom.” “I have come to realize that just making yourself happy is most important,” she continued. “Never be ashamed of what you feel. You have the right to feel any emotion that you want, and to do what makes you happy. That’s my life motto.” Related Artists Demi Lovato
