Justin Bieber’s ‘Karate Kid’ Song Is Eligible For An Oscar

‘Never Say Never’ joins tunes by Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Aguilera in the running for Original Song category. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Earlier this year, Justin Bieber set tweenage hearts aflutter when he teamed with Jaden Smith to record “Never Say Never,” the theme to Smith’s “Karate Kid” reboot. And now, he’s hoping to do the same for Oscar voters. Earlier this week, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences — the governing body of the Academy Awards — released its list of the 41 songs eligible for the Original Song category at the 83rd annual awards, and Bieber made the cut. “Never Say Never” is in the running against the likes of Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Coming Home” and “Me and Tennessee” (both from her upcoming “Country Strong” film) and a trio of songs from Christina Aguilera’s “Burlesque.” Though Bieber made the eligibility list, the tune’s nomination is no surefire bet: Movie clips featuring each song will be screened for voting members of the Academy’s Music Branch on January 6, and it will be up to them to select the field of nominees. Nominations will be announced on January 25 at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. According to the Academy, in order for a work to be deemed eligible for the Original Song category, it must “consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film,” and “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film, or as the first music cue in the end credits.” Bieber and Smith’s song is played over the end credits of “The Karate Kid.” The 83rd Academy Awards will be broadcast live from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 27. Concertgoer Leaps To Death At Swell Season Show

The band is ‘shocked and saddened’ by the tragedy. By Mawuse Ziegbe Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard of The Swell Season (file) Photo: Jason Merritt/ FilmMagic A man reportedly committed suicide at a concert featuring the band The Swell Season last Thursday. According to The Associated Press, 32-year-old San Jose resident Michael Edward Pickels leapt to his death in front of an audience of hundreds at the band’s show at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, California. Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Rick Sung said that Pickels jumped from a roof shielding the stage around 10 p.m. and fell onto the stage near Season frontman Glen Hansard. Hansard reportedly stopped playing and approached Pickels’ body. He was later pronounced dead after attempts to revive him failed. “The band, crew and all involved with them are shocked and saddened by the death that occurred at the August 19th show. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased, his family and friends,” the group said a statement posted on their website. “Making and performing music is what the band has always done in good times and in bad. Our hope is that in this communal experience tonight we can somehow help our own grieving process after what we just witnessed. The show will most certainly be different than any other we have ever played.” The duo, who are known for winning an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2008, added that they plan to continue their current tour. According to their website, Season has shows scheduled for Saturday (August 21) and Sunday. “We wish to continue to be sensitive to family and friends of this individual and hope that in performing it is not viewed as a selfish act. We have not come to this decision lightly,” the band said. “We continue to have them at the forefront of our minds and hearts.” Related Artists The Swell Season

Michigan

Below are pics from our campaign visit to Michigan. I did something at a finance event I haven’t done in a very long time – I introduced Dad to the crowd (because my Mom had hurt her hand at a campaign event). I have never been completely comfortable speaking in public but it just seemed easier this time because it was my Dad. On to California and Miami later this week! Song of the Day: “Gone Till November” by Wyclef Jean (Get it? 82 days…)
