Anthony Hopkins On ‘The Rite’: ‘I Know How To Scare People’

In new film, Oscar-winner plays unorthodox exorcist Father Lucas. By Kara Warner Anthony Hopkins Photo: MTV News If Anthony Hopkins fans know anything, it’s the fact that the Oscar-winner knows how to scare the pants off of moviegoers. The obvious, most-famous example is his award-winning turn as Dr. Hannibal Lecter in “Silence of the Lambs” and the subsequent sequels. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen Sir Hopkins play dark and devious, but with the release of exorcism thriller “The Rite” on Friday (January 28), fans can reacquaint themselves with a bit of Hopkins’ tricks and treats. In the film, which is based on real-life events, Hopkins plays unorthodox exorcist Father Lucas. Without delving into spoiler territory — no more than what the creepy promotional posters give away — when MTV News caught up with the actor recently, we asked him to take us through his process of playing possessed. Hopkins explained that most of his performances come from extensive preparation. For “The Rite,” he learned Latin and Italian for certain scenes, and spent a lot of time alone in his hotel room going over the script. “I would be there in my den, my man’s cave, going over and over [the] script,” Hopkins said. “Gradually, as you go through it over and over, all these voices and interpretations come to you,” he explained, adding that by the time he was ready to film the key possession sequences, he knew the material so well he was open to improvisation. “I put all kinds of very suggestive sexual stuff into it which they cut out, but stuff that would provoke people. I knew that the response was good because [director] Mikael H

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Hopes His Hesher Co-Star Wins an Oscar

Count Joseph Gordon-Levitt among the ” ignorant, faithless and over-cultured ” who loved Black Swan . “Perfect mad brilliance,” Levitt wrote on Twitter about Darren Aronofsky’s film. “Beauty is bliss; death delusion.” Um, spoiler alert, Joe? Of course here’s where the cynical part of you remembers that JoGo co-stars with Natalie Portman in the on-the-shelf 2010 Sundance film Hesher , and that an Oscar-winner attached to the indie film will make it a lot easier to market once it gets released. Synergy! [ @hitRECordJoe ]

Can You Identify the Reason Last Night’s 30 Rock was Perhaps its Best All Season?

Maybe 30 Rock ‘s fantastic episode last night, “College,” doesn’t really boil down to a single winning factor. You can credit the bizarre Jack Donaghy voiceover plot-line and Liz’s new nicknames for herself (Bliz-bian, anyone?) with some of the achievement. But one towering decision helped elevate this episode to the level of show’s best — and I fear it won’t be a consistent part of the rest of the season.

Can Robert De Niro Learn From These 5 SNL-Hosting Miscues?

It was announced Thursday that Robert De Niro will host Saturday Night Live on Dec. 4, and SNL fans are already nervous considering his last two outings as host. (Admittedly, the guy does look like he’s giving it his all.) But maybe the increasingly complacent Oscar-winner won’t be that bad — after all, SNL has seen far, far more challenged hosts than De Niro could ever be.

Where Does Justin Bieber’s 3D Movie Rank Among the Most Cynically Conceived Films Ever?

No matter how many reboots, remakes, sequels, fad cash-ins and the like are cranked out of the Hollywood sausage factory every year, there is somehow always room to be genuinely shocked by the film industry’s cynicism. To wit: Did anyone actually see a 3D feature starring tween-pop heartthrob Justin Bieber — and likely directed by Oscar-winner Davis Guggenheim, no less — coming? And in any case, where does this craven catch-all of faddy phenomena rank among some of the all-time greats of Hollywood cynicism?

Did MTV Cancel The City?

Here’s a nasty rumor that tops anything Lauren Conrad ever started: Laguna Beach spinoff The City may be off the air soon. According to Fashionista , the reality series about Whitney Port’s travails as a New York fashion designer may be over thanks to Port and co-star Olivia Palermo’s disinterest. I guess this means Diane von Furstenburg will be reduced to cameo appearances on Project Runway while Kelly Cutrone will have to just hang out on her own Bravo show. Devastating. [ Fashionista ]

EXCLUSIVE: Helen Mirren on Three Decades of the ‘Visceral,’ ‘Flawed’ Caligula

This week sees the opening of Love Ranch , the long-delayed, fact-based retelling of the life and times of the first legal brothel in the United States. And this year sees the 30th anniversary of Caligula , a movie whose A-list depravity first arrived on these shores in February 1980. What do they have in common? Dame Helen Mirren, who stars as Love Ranch ‘s willful, no-nonsense madam Grace Bontempo and appeared as Caesonia — the courtesan who bears the mad emperor’s (played by Malcolm McDowell) child — in the notorious, massively expensive film whose power struggles involved everyone from Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione to screenwriter Gore Vidal to top-shelf English talent like McDowell, Mirren, John Gielgud and Peter O’T oole. Reached today to discuss Love Ranch , the Oscar-winner indulged Moveline’s flashback.

Oscar-Winner The Cove Not So Big in Japan After All

Last anyone heard, this year’s Best Documentary Feature Oscar-winner The Cove was headed for limited release in Japan, where audiences would finally be given the chance to make up their own minds about their country’s brutal, controversial dolphin-slaughtering pastime. That was in February . Here it is the second week in June, and thanks to some nationalist outrage, the film still hasn’t made its way to screens. What gives?
