Winter’s Bone Wins at Gotham Awards, Plus a Few Curveballs

Winter’s Bone made a serious bid to hang on to it’s Best Picture nomination in Movieline’s Oscar Index at last night’s Gotham Awards, taking home two awards including Best Feature. On the other hand, Best Documentary winner The Oath probably won’t make much Oscar headway, since it wasn’t even shortlisted . Blood on a trench coat, a wholesome-seeming wife and mom behind bars, a spouse who’s devoted almost to the point of obsession: Paul Haggis’ marital thriller The Next Three Days has a lot going for it, including two appealing and extremely capable actors, Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks. The plot is worked out with care, and it takes its time, unapologetically, in a manner that’s perfectly suited to thinking adults. The whole enterprise reeks of class.

Tragic news out of Hollywood: Ronni Chasen, 64, a famed Hollywood publicist and a fixture on the Oscar scene, was shot multiple times in her Mercedes Benz near Sunset Boulevard and Whittier Drive on Tuesday morning. Actor Kevin McCarthy Passes Away at 96

Prolific actor Kevin McCarthy died over the weekend at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA. McCarthy appeared in almost 100 films over his nearly 70 year career, including The Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Death of a Salesman , for which he received his only Oscar nomination. He was 96. [ NYT ]
