Via CBS News: Hundreds of students have been evacuated from a dorm on the University of Central Florida campus in Orlando after explosives devices were found while authorities were investigating a death. Police were called to Tower 1 early Monday after a fire alarm went off. Arriving officers found a man dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police told local TV stations they found an assault weapon and improvised explosive devices on the scene. It was not immediately known whether the dead man is a student. About 500 students were evacuated from the dorm to the student union, and a parking garage was closed. The university has cancelled classes through noon Monday as a precaution. “It’s unnerving, for sure,” one young woman told CBS Affiliate WKMG. “Definitely not used to it, especially living on campus. You hear about that a lot living off campus, but it’s especially rare living on campus.” We hope no one else was hurt and they’re able to get this under control to avoid future incidents.

Adult film star Celine Tran — known as “Katsuni” — sued Bow Wow back in July 2012, claiming he stole clips of her pole dancing in a music video for a French band called Electronic Conspiracy and then used a ton of the footage in his music video “Drank in My Cup” … sans permission. Bow Wow didn’t even respond to the lawsuit, so a federal judge ordered him to pony up $79,346.07 (damages + attorneys’ fees) … and stop with the footage STAT. An anti-drug Republican lawmaker has been charged with drug possession in upstate New York. Anti-Drug Lawmaker Arrested And Charged With Drug Possession Via WLWT reports: Assemblyman Steve Katz was charged after a Thursday morning traffic stop, according to a report by the Albany Times Union. Police said the 59-year-old Katz was driving 80 mph on a toll road near Coeymans, N.Y. State troopers said they smelled marijuana and found a small bag of the drug. Katz serves on the Assembly’s Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Committee and its Higher Education Committee. The Times Union reported that Katz voted against a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana last year. Katz ran unsuccessfully for state Senate last year. SMH!! Wait a minute, we find it hard to believe he was stoned and driving 80MPH. Now, if they popped him for under the minimum speed limit…
WTF?!?! Swiss Tourist Sexually Attacked By Via HuffingtonPost A Swiss woman who was on a cycling trip in central India with her husband has been gang-raped by eight men, police said Saturday. The attack comes three months after the fatal gang-rape of a woman aboard a New Delhi bus outraged Indians. Authorities detained and questioned 13 men in connection with the latest attack, which occurred Friday night as the couple camped out in a forest in Madhya Pradesh state after bicycling from the temple town of Orchha, local police officer R.K. Gurjar said. The men beat the couple and gang-raped the woman, he said. They also stole the couple’s mobile phone, a laptop computer and 10,000 rupees ($185). The woman, 39, was treated at a hospital in the nearby city of Gwalior, Gurjar said, adding that she and her husband apparently suffered no major injuries. A photo showed the woman – her identity concealed with a hood – walking while being escorted by police to the hospital. Chicago Mom Sues McDonald’s After Son Eats Condom In His Food Via MiamiHerald A lawsuit against McDonald’s alleges a child ate a used condom he found in the play area of one of the chain’s Chicago restaurants. The suit was filed Wednesday on behalf of Anishi Spencer and her two sons, who were 3 and 2 years old at the time of the alleged incident in February 2012. The mother alleges the 2-year-old coughed up a piece of the condom and that both children required medical treatment. The suit accuses McDonald’s of failing to remove harmful debris from an area used by children. McDonald’s said Thursday it was investigating. It added in a statement that “providing a safe, clean environment is a top priority.” The woman’s attorney, Jeffrey Deutschman, says he tried for months to reach a settlement but got no response. Black defendants facing trial in Houston, the death penalty capital of America – are more than three times as likely to face a possible death sentence than whites , new academic research has revealed. Black Prisoners More Likely To Get Death Penalty Than Whites Via The Guardian reports: The study, by a criminologist at the University of Maryland, exposes the extent of racial discrimination inherent in the administering of capital punishment in Harris County, the ground zero of the death penalty in the US. The county, which incorporates Houston, Texas’s largest city, has carried out 116 executions in the modern era – more than any entire state in the union apart from Texas itself. Professor Raymond Paternoster of the university’s institute of criminal justice and criminology was commissioned by defence lawyers acting in the case of Duane Buck, a death row prisoner from Houston whose 1995 death sentence is currently being reconsidered by the Texas courts. Paternoster, whose report is based on the latest quantitative methods, looked at 504 cases involving adult defendants who had been indicted for capital murder in Harris County between 1992 and 1999 – the period during which Buck was charged for murdering his former girlfriend, Debra Gardner, and a man called Kenneth Butler. Paternoster whittled down that pool to 20 cases that most closely echoed that of Buck’s own in terms of the factors involved in the crime that were likely to incur a death sentence. He found that of the 21 men, including Buck, seven out of the 10 who were African American were sent by the Harris County district attorney for capital trial, compared with just one of the five white defendants. “The probability that the district attorney will advance a case to a [death] penalty trial is more than three times as high when the defendant is African American than for white defendants,” Paternoster writes. He adds: “The disparity by race of the defendant, moreover, cannot be attributed to observed case characteristics because these cases are those that were most comparable”. The habeus petition chronicles the long and controversial history of the death penalty in Texas, particularly in Harris County. Though the county has a black population of 19%, African Americans represent almost 50% of the people detained in its jails, while 68% of the past 34 executions to emerge from the area involved black inmates. He will lead the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics as Pope Franci s. While his selection may be historic, it may also mean more of the same when it comes to gay rights in the Catholic Church. Via HuffPo reports: Pope Francis is a conservative who is anti-gay marriage and anti-gay adoption. He has described same-sex marriage as the work of the devil and a “destructive attack on God’s plan.” He has also said that gay adoption is a form of discrimination against children. In 2010, Francis championed against a bill for same-sex marriage and gay adoption, according to the National Catholic Register. “[T]he Argentine people will face a situation whose outcome can seriously harm the family,” he wrote to the four monasteries in Argentina. “At stake is the identity and survival of the family: father, mother and children. At stake are the lives of many children who will be discriminated against in advance, and deprived of their human development given by a father and a mother and willed by God. At stake is the total rejection of God’s law engraved in our hearts.” He went on to describe it as a “‘move’ of the Father of Lies who seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God” and asked for lawmakers to “not act in error.” In John 8:44, the Father of Lies is the devil. Argentina approved same-sex marriage in 2010, making it the first Latin American country to legalize the union, the New York Times previously reported. The country is also progressive when it comes to contraception. President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner has promoted free contraception and artificial insemination, the Associated Press notes. In the past, Francis has clashed with the Argentinean government over his stance on these issues. GLAAD President Herndon Graddick responded to the election of the new pope in a statement obtained by The Huffington Post. For decades the Catholic hierarchy has been in need of desperate reform. In his life, Jesus condemned gays zero times. In Pope Benedict’s short time in the papacy, he made a priority of condemning gay people routinely. This, in spite of the fact, that the Catholic hierarchy had been in collusion to cover up the widespread abuse of children within its care. We hope this Pope will trade in his red shoes for a pair of sandals and spend a lot less time condemning and a lot more time foot-washing. Graddick also specifically addressed Francis’ previous comments about gay adoption being a “discrimination against children.” “The real discrimination against children is the pedophilia that has run rampant in the Catholic Church with little more than collusion from the Vatican,” he said. Along with GLAAD, Stonewall Chief Executive Ben Summerskill responded to the new pope’s election, saying: ‘We hope Pope Francis shows more Christian love and charity to the world’s 420 million lesbian, gay and bisexual people than his predecessor.” Despite the pope’s prior anti-gay sentiments, Francis’ official biographer, Sergio Rubin, defended him as a noble man. “Is Bergoglio a progressive – a liberation theologist even? No,” he told the AP. “He’s no third-world priest. Does he criticize the International Monetary Fund, and neoliberalism? Yes. Does he spend a great deal of time in the slums? Yes.” It’s just the same old song with the Catholics. To lead the new generation, they needed a truly progressive Pope who would moderately lead and target issues such as a women’s rights, gay marriage, pedophilia cases within the church, the AIDS epidemic and poverty. Instead, they just hired the same guy to do a new job.

On the heels of a tour of the North Korean capital Pyongyang, where he professed his friendship to leader and U.S. top-antagonist Kim Jong Un, CBS News caught up with the flamboyant basketball player in Vatican City, in his new capacity as a front-man for the Irish gambling company Paddy Power. The online betting behemoth chose Rodman to help promote its offered odds on who will be chosen by the Catholic cardinals as the next pope. Though he insists he doesn’t gamble, “on stuff like that,” Rodman wasn’t shy about telling CBS News who he thought the next pontiff would be. “Today we always want to see something different, and this is going to be different. He will be black, he will be black,” professed the former all-star forward. He suggested Ghana’s Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson was the man to win it. Turkson has been named as a contender in the conclave, should the cardinals decide to elect their first pontiff in modern times from outside of Europe. Paddy Power, incidentally, has Italian Cardinal Angelo Scola as a clear front-runner, at least in terms of betting odds. Rodman said he hoped to meet the new pope while in Rome, whoever he may be.
