‘Avengers’ Sunk ‘Battleship,’ Director Peter Berg Says

‘What I need everyone to do is go see ‘Battleship’ now that they’ve seen ‘Avengers’ five times,’ Berg tells MTV News of sequel chances. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Kelly Marino Taylor Kitsch in “Battleship” Photo: If there’s one thing you can count on Earth’s mightiest heroes to accomplish, it’s kicking alien ass. Iron Man, Captain America and the rest of the gang didn’t just destroy the extraterrestrial threat in their movie, either — they also sunk the aliens of “Battleship” without even knowing it. “Battleship” director Peter Berg spoke with MTV News recently about his thoughts on the box-office earnings of his latest big-budget blockbuster. The Hasbro adaptation has earned $235 million overseas, but only $63 million at the domestic box office — an outcome Berg pins on the outstanding success of “Marvel’s The Avengers.” “The movie kicked butt internationally, but we kind of ran into a wall when ‘Avengers’ refused to go away,” he told MTV News. ” ‘The Avengers’ outperformed everything. It was impossible for ‘Battleship’ to get any oxygen.” Asked if he would do anything differently with the “Battleship” release knowing what he knows now, Berg had one idea in mind. “I would have loved to have come out three weeks before ‘The Avengers’ domestically, like we did internationally,” he said. “We did OK, but in hindsight — which my grandmother used to say is worth about a bucket of spit — we would have [released the movie] ahead of ‘The Avengers,’ not realizing it would have become, I think, the second biggest film in history behind ‘Avatar.’ ” “Avengers” is actually the third-highest-grossing film of all time behind “Titanic,” but who’s counting? Berg is. When asked if he’d be interested in filming a “Battleship” sequel, he had a numbers-oriented answer in mind. “What I need everyone to do is go see ‘Battleship’ now that they’ve seen ‘Avengers’ five times. If they do that, we can definitely make a sequel,” he said. ” ‘Battleship’ is a film that I would definitely like to do a sequel to. I loved making that film. I had a great time with it.” Do you want to see a “Battleship” sequel? Tell us in the comments below! Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: ‘Battleship’ MTV First: Battleship Related Photos ‘Battleship’

Diane Kruger Has Nice Cannes [PICS]

If you’re not sure who Diane Kruger is, you might remember her as Helen of Troy in the sword-and-sandal blockbuster Troy (2004) or as film star/undercover operative Bridget Von Hammersmark in Inglourious Basterds (2009) . Diane won a big, fancy award at the biggest and fanciest of all film festivals, Cannes , for her role in Basterds ; now she’s serving on the jury, meaning lots of red carpet appearances and opportunities to ogle her outstanding cleavage. Melissa Gilbert, Maria Menounos Join Dancing with the Stars [PICS]

It seems like only yesterday when we SKINtroduced you to the last new cast of Dancing with the Stars. And it pretty much was- the last cast announcement was a mere six months ago in August 2011. But now the producers of the reality show juggernaut are strapping on their dancing shoes for the fourteenth time, and they’ve got another outstanding (by which we mean adequate) cast list to reveal. Leading the pack this year is Jaleel White – aka Urkel – with Entertainment Tonight ‘s Maria Menounos filling the “hot TV host” slot and The View ‘s Sherri Shepard performing Nancy Grace duties, leaving Little House on the Prairie ‘s Melissa Gilbert as the only cast member this season with nudity on her resume. 2011 Emmys Ruled By ‘Modern Family’

‘Mad Men,’ ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Mildred Pierce’ also snag big awards. By Jocelyn Vena “Modern Family” castmembers Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen at the 2011 Emmy Awards Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images On Sunday night (September 18), TV’s biggest stars turned up at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles to see who would go home with hardware and who would leave empty-handed. The night’s hostess, “Glee” star Jane Lynch, opened the show with a musical number that featured “Star Trek” star Leonard Nimoy and a slew of other stars, like Randy Jackson and Jon Hamm, along with his “Mad Men” crew, singing about the glories of TV and the perils of awards shows. “I know this feels stupid and schlocky and already feels overly long,” Lynch joked in song. Lynch’s “Glee” alter ego Sue Sylvester, in her signature tracksuit, eventually made an appearance, and the hostess did something the show’s fans have been waiting for: She slushied Coach Sylvester. During the comedy portion of the night, “Modern Family” owned, starting with Julie Bowen beating out co-star Sofia Vergara for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. “I don’t know what I’m going to talk about in therapy now; I won something!” she joked. The Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy category was filled with “Modern Family” actors, but it was Bowen’s TV husband Ty Burrell who took it home, joking, “I have a job where every day I go to work in full makeup.” “Welcome back to the ‘Modern Family’ Awards!” Lynch joked when the show came back from break. “We decided to throw them into the drama category just to see what happens.” Charlie Sheen presented Outstanding Lead Actor In a Comedy Series to “Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons. After all the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy nominees got onstage and received a standing ovation, the Emmy went to Melissa McCarthy for her work on “Mike and Molly.” In addition to an Emmy, she got a bouquet of roses and a tiara. She told the room, “Wow, it’s my first and best pageant ever.” “The Amazing Race” won for Outstanding Reality Competition right before the Lonely Island crew took to the stage , along with a number of A-listers like Michael Bolton, Akon, John Stamos, Ed Helms and Maya Rudolph, for a medley of their tunes like “I Just Had Sex,” “3-Way” and “Jack Sparrow.” “Glee” star Lea Michele and “Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder then presented Outstanding Directing in a Variety, Music or Comedy Series to Don Roy King for “Saturday Night Live.” The vampy Anna Paquin and Scott Caan presented the Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy series award to “The Daily Show,” which won for the ninth year in a row. As the night turned more dramatic, more and more shows got in the winning mix. Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama went to Margo Martindale for her turn on the FX series “Justified.” Martin Scorsese took home his first-ever Emmy, winning Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for “Boardwalk Empire.” Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series went to Peter Dinklage for his work on “Game of Thrones.” “Wow, I followed Martin Scorsese,” he gushed. “My heart is pounding; you are a legend. … I would like to thank my dog sitter, whose name is Kitty,” he later joked. Julianna Margulies won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her turn on “The Good Wife.” Drew Barrymore passed the torch to the new “Charlie’s Angels” as they handed out the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series to Kyle Chandler for the final season of “Friday Night Lights.” Chandler thanked “the people of Austin, Texas, who welcomed us into their homes.” Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Mini Series or Movie went to Maggie Smith for “Dowager Countess of Grantham,” while Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie went to “The Kennedys” star Barry Pepper. Both Smith and Pepper weren’t there to accept their awards. It was all about “Mildred Pierce” in the remaining Mini Series or Movie categories. Outstanding Supporting Actor went to Guy Pearce, who teased, “This was really a delightful experience making ‘Mildred Pierce’: I got to have sex with Kate Winslet many, many times and I didn’t know it would result in this,” he said holding his trophy. It was a delightful night for Kate Winslet as well, who won Outstanding Lead Actress for “Mildred Pierce. She seemed pretty stunned as she took the stage, saying, “This means such a great deal to all of us!” Next, Outstanding Mini Series or Movie went to “Downton Abbey (Masterpiece),” while Outstanding Drama Series went to “Mad Men.” “I did not think that was going to happen,” “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner said. “We are so grateful. For us and our families, this is an incredible dream.” The show has won for each of its four seasons. “Modern Family” capped its big night by winning Outstanding Comedy Series, its second year in a row. Show creator Steve Levitan said, “We are so very honored to be in this room. We appreciate every single second of this. I want to thank this amazing cast,” with a special shout-out to the show’s kid cast. Were you happy with the Emmy winners? Let us know in the comments below! On Thursday morning (July 14), her “Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden” HBO special picked up five Primetime Emmy Award nominations, top-lined by a nod for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. In each of those categories, Gaga will take on the usual spate of awards telecasts (the 83rd Academy Awards, the 53rd Grammy Awards, etc.), not to mention comedians Ricky Gervais and Louis C.K., each of whom earned nods for their comedy specials. Elsewhere, Gaga’s favorite show, “Glee,” was among the most-nominated programs, landing a nod for Outstanding Comedy Series. Stars Jane Lynch and Chris Colfer also earned nominations, as did guest stars Kristin Chenoweth, Dot-Marie Jones and Gwyneth Paltrow. The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 18, at 8 p.m. ET on Fox. Will you be rooting for Gaga on Emmy night? Tell us in the comments! Ricky Martin, ‘True Blood’ Win GLAAD Awards

Tina Fey was also on hand to accept the Outstanding Individual Episode award for ’30 Rock.’ By Jocelyn Vena Ricky Martin at the GLAAD Awards on Saturday Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ WireImage Tina Fey, “True Blood” star Denis O’Hare and Patrick Wilson are just of few of the celebrities who gathered at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards , hosted by Bravo’s Andy Cohen on Saturday in New York. The awards honor “fair, accurate and inclusive representations” of the LGBT community in television and journalism. Big winners of the night included “True Blood,” which won for Outstanding Drama Series, and “30 Rock,” which won for Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBT character) for its “Klaus & Greta” episode. Entrepreneur Russell Simmons was honored with the Excellence in Media Award. Ricky Martin took home the Vito Russo Award, which is presented to a “lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality for the LGBT community.” In his speech, Martin credited GLAAD for helping him cope in the wake of his public coming out last year on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” He then went on to push for Latin American gay rights and asked that GLAAD stand up for those who can’t in that community. “I just want to be free. I can say today I’m free,” he said at the event. “And for that I definitely need to thank my parents for being so supportive, my mother and my dad for their unconditional love, and my friends, my family, my fans. And my partner in crime and my boyfriend Carlos.” That was only the beginning of the accolades for those projects and people nominated, with additional GLAAD awards scheduled to be handed out in Los Angeles on April 10 and in San Francisco on May 14.
