Phil Ivey Investigated After Winning $11.5 Million at London Gambling Club

London authorities are trying to determine if cheating played a role in the American poker star Phil Ivey’s recent winning streak at a game called Punto Banco. A variant of baccarat, the game is a favorite of Ivey, often called the Tiger Woods of Poker for his dominance and resemblance to the golf great. In August, Ivey, 35, and a companion entered Crockfords in London’s fashionable Mayfair district, the city’s oldest gambling club and among its most prestigious. Over the course of two days, the couple played for seven hours, first losing heavily, then winning back their losses plus many millions more – $11.5 million in all . He’s still waiting for the money. “There’s nothing in his past that would hint at his being a cheater or unethical in any way,” says Brian Bradley of Bluff Magazine. “People say he’s arguably the best poker player in the world; but, really, there’s no argument: He’s #1. He’s known both for skill and his love of high-stakes games.” “He loves anything where there’s some sexiness at stake.” According to the Daily Mail, suspicions of cheating arose when it was discovered that Ivey’s female companion had her membership at another gambling house suspended. Genting, the parent company of Crockfords, has had its investigators inspect every detail of Ivey’s play. Video recorded by 10 overhead cameras also was reviewed, but failed to disclose any wrongdoing. Ditto interviews with all staff present. Bradley finds coverage of the story by the English press to be insinuating and contradictory. “Bizarre” he calls it. On the one hand, the stories make clear that no impropriety has been found. Yet at the same time, they leave open the possibility Ivey may have cheated. “Character assignation,” Bradley calls it. What possible explanation could there be? “I’m not sure,” says Bradley. “They’re earning themselves a ton of publicity – but it’s not the kind of publicity you want. It’s like a run on a bank.” “When you withhold payment, people stop trusting you. Maybe it’s because with $12 million involved they just want to make sure every ‘I’ has been dotted and every ‘t’ crossed.” “Phil’s going to get his money; they’re just making him wait.” And why might they want to make him wait? “Casinos love high-rollers. But not high-rollers who win. Maybe they think if they make it less enjoyable for Phil, he won’t come back. Essentially, they’re firing their customer.”

Robert Pattinson: Driven to Drinking by Kristen Stewart?

Will Ferrell is not the only person broken up by Kristen Stewart cheating on Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders. Also really sad over the course of events? Robert Pattinson himself. Reporter Carlos Greer tells People that the actor is ” heartbroken and angry ,” while sources spill to the magazine that “he’s been drinking and relying on friends to deal with the pain.” Other outlets, meanwhile, report that Pattinson has returned to the most dangerous habit of all: smoking. The star is reportedly holed up inside Reese Witherspoon’s vacation home in California and we’ll mostly likely see him in public again on August 13 when Cosmopolis premieres in New York City. As for the woman who destroyed Rob’s spirit? Greer says Stewart feels terrible. She is “remorseful” and “beating herself up over this.”

Jean-Claude Van Damme Goes To War Against ‘The Expendables’

‘I kill one of them,’ the Belgian action icon told MTV News about his role as a bad guy in the upcoming ‘Expendables’ sequel. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz If “The Expendables” brought the pantheon of action-movie heroes together for one balls-to-the-wall R-rated epic, then the amounts of badassery that “The Expendables 2” promises to bring to the table is even further off the charts. Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are upping their game from cameos to full-fledged co-stars this time around, with Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking his way into the fray as well. And then there’s Jean-Claude Van Damme, who won’t be just another mercenary following Sylvester Stallone’s lead, either. Quite the opposite, in fact: The Muscles from Brussels is going to be the movie’s villain. “I play Mr. Vilain,” the actor told MTV News during a recent interview. “And I kill one of [the Expendables].” Which Expendable will meet his maker at Vilain’s hands? Van Damme wouldn’t spill the beans. But he did explain why he wanted to go the villainous route for “Expendables 2” rather than join Stallone’s rag-tag group of good-guy mercenaries. “They asked me if I wanted to be an Expendable guy, and they said it’s going to be a big franchise. But I don’t want to be in ‘Expendables 20,’ ” he said. “I want to play a villain to make a good impression. When you play a villain, you get more from Stallone. He gives you more screen time, and then we’ll see what happens. I think him and I did a good job together.” It’s not just his dynamic with Stallone that Van Damme enjoyed, either. The Belgian actor got to work with a healthy portion of the action icons on the “Expendables” cast, folks he already knew from various encounters over the course of his storied career. “You have all those guys: Chuck Norris, Arnold, Bruce Willis, and there’s lots of testosterone,” he said of the vibe on set. “In ‘Expendables,’ you have all of those guys with their trailers and bodyguards. I knew them all. I knew Chuck when I came [to Hollywood] years ago, Arnold with ‘Last Action Hero.’ Bruce Willis, I met him once on Sunset [Boulevard] while driving and racing together. Since I’d met all of them … I was the guy going there in a very friendly way. It was cool. For me, it was cool.” Of course, even with all of those stars in the mix, it’s Van Damme versus Stallone that fans will want to look out for. With Stallone set as the series’ protagonist and Van Damme in the mix as the main baddie, it’s bound to get explosive when these two titans finally clash on the big screen. “It’s like [George] Foreman versus Muhammad Ali,” he grinned. All-American Rejects Won’t Let Kids ‘Slow Build’ Get Them Down

‘Buy it, steal it, just feel it. I don’t care,’ frontman Tyson Ritter says of AAR’s new album, Kids in the Street. By James Montgomery Tyson Ritter of All-American Rejects Photo: MTV News When the All-American Rejects returned in March with Kids in the Street, expectations were high. After all, it was the follow-up to 2008’s When the World Comes Down — an album that continued their string of crossover successes thanks to the hit “Gives You Hell” — and powered by slick first single “Beekeeper’s Daughter,” Kids looked certain to continue that trend. Of course, to date, Kids has yet to catch fire. It debuted at #18 on the Billboard albums chart and has subsequently dropped out of the Top 200 altogether. But the Rejects aren’t worried by that slow start. In fact, to hear them tell it, everything’s going according to plan. “This is the record where we’re trying to prove ourselves as an ‘album band.’ We’ve done fine with singles,” AAR frontman Tyson Ritter told MTV News backstage at the Bamboozle festival. “Our last record, we were so proud of, but ‘Gives You Hell,’ sort of just steam-rolled the way and let nothing else surface. Honestly, man, we’re a whatever-the-hell-anybody-takes-from-us band. Singles, records, buy it, steal it — just feel it. I don’t care. Just come to a show.” And it’s at those shows where the true scope of the Rejects’ accomplishments can be felt. After all, over the course of a decade as a band, they’ve strung together a series of hits that would give any group pause (“Swing, Swing,” “Move Along,” “It Ends Tonight,” “Dirty Little Secret,” etc) and it’s gotten to the point these days where the band can actually see the past 10 years play out before their very eyes. Which is why they’re not worried about one album; they’re career artists, through and through. “It’s been a slow build with this one, but, you know, we’re in a climate where guitars aren’t as cool as they used to be and, luckily, I feel like our fanbase has sort of hung out and waited for us for four records,” Ritter said. “It’s [been] 10 years now. We just got done playing shows, on a tour, and there are people that have been there for 10 years, singing ‘Swing, Swing’ in the back, drinking, and then girls up front with the X’s out their hands, singing ‘Dirty Little Secret’ and ‘Gives You Hell.’ So it’s crazy to look at a Rejects show, and as you scan to the back of the crowd, you’re going through 10 years of people.” Are you an All-American Rejects fan?
