Breaking Bad Creator Vince Gilligan on AMC’s ‘Big Balls’ and a Potential Fifth Season

Over the course of three seasons, Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has transformed his protagonist from a spineless husband and chemistry teacher into a cold-hearted meth chemist who neglects his family in order to churn out hundreds of pounds of lethal crystal for cash. The role, born somewhere deep in Gilligan’s subconscious, won star Bryan Cranston back-to-back Emmys, and tied together three seasons of one of the best (and darkest) dramas on television today. Gilligan himself, though, could not be any more different than the grim world and characters he created. In anticipation of this Sunday’s season finale, the native Virginian — who also wrote and produced over 30 episodes of The X Files and penned the Will Smith blockbuster Hancock — phoned Movieline to cheerfully talk about the nuttiest scene he ever wrote for Walt (that never made it to air), the encouragement of AMC, and the possibility of renewing Breaking Bad for a fifth season.

‘Thor’ Stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman Talk Chemistry In New Video

Portman calls beefed-up leading man ‘a god’ in new video from movie’s set. By Kara Warner Chris Hemsworth Photo: Entertainment Tonight Hot on the heels of the release of the first official photo (and alleged concept art) from “Thor” comes a video report straight from the Santa Fe, New Mexico, set, courtesy of “Entertainment Tonight.” The clip features a charming exchange between two of the film’s stars, Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Natalie Portman (Jane Foster) : The duo discuss their chemistry and Hemsworth’s impressive build. Portman also expresses delight upon discovering that Hemsworth was on Australia’s version of “Dancing with the Stars.” The topic of Hemsworth’s toughness and physique are played up the video, along with a few brief action scenes. “He’s a god,” Portman says of her co-star, even alluding to his healthy, “big appetite.” Later, Portman pokes fun at herself with a fake teaser: “Chris and that little midget girl, starring in Thor!” Director Kenneth Branagh praised Hemsworth’s dedication to the role, saying the actor worked himself into peak condition. “He took seriously the challenge that had to be taken on by whoever was going to play Thor, to find this combination we wanted of a sort of Herculean strength, and gosh, he’s strong,” Branagh said. “We’ve had him doing all sorts of physical feats on it. Some of it’s practical — lifting people up, lifting two people up, and doing it for a long time over the course of a day. I sort of said, ‘Oh, you’ve got to get your shirt off. Do you mind?’ And he said, ‘Do I mind? I spent six months getting into shape for this! No, I don’t mind!’ ” “It’s pretty exciting,” Hemsworth says in the clip when asked about stepping into the boots of the storied God of Thunder. “The whole thing is surreal.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Thor.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘Harry Potter’ Clip At MTV Movie Awards Hints At Dark, Intense ‘Deathly Hallows’

Major portion of the final chapters will focus on Harry/ Voldemort relationship, footage suggests. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I” Photo: Warner Bros. With every new glimpse of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1” it becomes more and more apparent that the final two chapters of the Potter story will be the darkest and most intense yet. The latest clip, which debuted during the MTV Movie Awards Sunday, showed that a major portion of the first of the final two Potter films will be focused on the ominous relationship between Harry and He Who Must Not Be Named, Voldemort. It’s fitting, given that over the course of roughly a decade (seven books, soon-to-be eight films) Harry Potter has lived in the shadow of the dark wizard who killed his parents. The clip opened with the always foreboding-looking Voldemort (played by Ralph Fiennes) standing on an unknown peak, deep in evil thought. His voice is heard plotting Potter’s death, once again: “I have to be the one to kill [Harry Potter].” Cut to fast-paced imagery of Harry, Ron and Hermione at various places on their journey to track down the remaining Horcruxes and the Deathly Hallows; various action sequences that hint at the possible impending doom for our hero; an intense and emotional show-down between Harry and his best friend, Ron. Though we were hoping for a shot of the long-awaited Hermione and Ron kiss, we have to settle for the quick shot of Harry and Ginny’s romantic embrace before they part ways. While we know the studio is hesitant to reveal any spoilers for the movie, we still hoped to see a few more happy moments: Bill and Fleur’s wedding, Harry being named godfather of Lupin and Tonks’ baby, etc. What did you think of the new spot? ‘Lost’ Finale Wins Sunday Ratings Race

Sci-fi swan song beats ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ but fails to match the success of other hyped-up series closers By Josh Wigler Fans watch ‘Lost’ Finale Series in Times Square Photo: Getty Images On “Lost,” there’s a sequence of numbers that must be avoided at all costs: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. But those numbers weren’t the most important digits when it came to Sunday night’s series finale — that all-important figure is closer to 13.5 million, the number of viewers who tuned in to the episode, appropriately titled “The End.” The pre-finale clip show, “Lost: The Final Journey,” garnered 9.8 million viewers, while the post-show edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” featuring interviews with castmembers and comedic alternate endings, attracted 3.4 million viewers. Although the 13.5 million fans who watched the finale made up a strong enough audience to propel “Lost” to its best-rated episode in two years and well past the season finale of NBC’s “The Celebrity Apprentice,” it still wasn’t a fantastic result, given the numbers the series was used to at its peak. During the show’s first season, “Lost” averaged nearly 16 million viewers and subsequently declined to 11 million during season five. The pilot episode of “Lost” yielded a massive 18.6 million viewers. Additionally, the “Lost” finale fell short in comparison to other similarly hyped series finales including “M.A.S.H.” (121.6 million), “Seinfeld” (76.3 million) and “Friends” (52.5 million), while barely edging out the finales for HBO’s cable offerings “The Sopranos” (11.9 million) and “Sex and the City” (10.6 million). Despite a relatively lackluster viewership, the series finale performed rather admirably, given that the show’s audience dwindled so dramatically over the course of its run, a fact that has been blamed on an increasingly complicated continuity and tough-to-crack story line. Why do you think the “Lost” audience dwindled over its six-season run? Let us know in the comments! ‘Lost’ Fans Don’t Just Sit Back And Watch

The nearly concluded TV series has inspired artwork, video tributes and more from fans. By Josh Wigler Matthew Fox, Evangeline Lilly and Terry O’Quinn in “Lost” Photo: ABC For many fans, “Lost” isn’t just a television series, it’s a way of life. The story of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 has unfolded over the course of six seasons, but the legacy of “Lost” isn’t relegated to the small screen. From inventive video mash-ups to expertly crafted art campaigns, “Lost” fans have become active participants in turning the TV show into the popular culture phenomenon it is today. Even as the series prepares for its final episode on Sunday, the sheer amount of fan-made material guarantees that “Lost” will live on long after it leaves the airwaves. The ambitious mythology of “Lost” has prompted several fans to group together in order to decipher the show’s greatest mysteries. One particularly useful resource is Lostpedia.org , an online encyclopedia chronicling the show’s every detail. Fans have also flocked to websites such as Lost-Forum.com , DarkUFO and Jopinionated to discuss the series, puzzle out information from previews and spoilers, and engage in expert commentary. But fans aren’t just interested in the serious side of “Lost.” Several cartoonists have poked fun at the series through comic strip parodies, such as the hilarious “Lost” comics drawn by ” Nedroid ” artist Anthony Clark and ” Hark! A Vagrant ” creator Kate Beaton. Artists have exhibited their appreciation for the series in other ways, including the impressive Damon, Carlton and a Polar Bear art campaign that began as an online viral effort and culminated in the “Lost” Underground Art Show at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles last year. The art project was recently re-launched with new prints, T-shirts and other “Lost” inspired merchandise available for purchase. Beyond static images, some particularly creative fans have put their “Lost” appreciation in motion with videos on YouTube and other similar Web sites. Some of these videos fall in the realm of loving comedy, like Desmond’s “brother” compilation , while others bring different popular culture influences into the fold, such as the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 retold using the real-time format of “24.” “Lost” has earned so many followers over the years that even noted celebrities such as novelist Stephen King and talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel are members of the show’s loyal fanbase. Recently, another highly successful entertainment professional unmasked himself as a “Lost” fan: none other than “Star Wars” creator George Lucas. “In six seasons, you’ve managed to span both time and space, and I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I never saw what was around the corner,” Lucas praised “Lost” show-runners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse in an open letter . “Now that it’s all coming to an end, it’s impressive to see how much was planned out in advance and how neatly you’ve wrapped up everything. You’ve created something really special.” Given the vast wealth of fan-made “Lost” material created over the last six years, it’s safe to say that plenty of viewers share Lucas’ sentiment: If nothing else, “Lost” is certainly special. Stay tuned all week for more “Lost” coverage as MTV News counts down to the finale! What’s your favorite fan-made “Lost” site, video or work of art? Share them all in the comments.

‘Letters To Juliet’ Is A ‘Perfect Love Story,’ Christopher Egan Says

‘It feels like real characters with real issues,’ the actor says of the film. By Jocelyn Vena Christopher Egan Photo: MTV News It’s probably common for an actor to swoon over Amanda Seyfried while shooting a film with the beautiful actress. So when Christopher Egan had to play up his character’s negative views about true love to counteract Seyfried’s positive outlook , he knew it was only a matter of time before Charlie would cave in and eventually see the brighter side of love that Sophie saw all along. “I like that it’s coming from a place of loving his grandmother,” he told MTV News about the flick, which opens Friday. “I think you can forgive him because of the loss that he’s had in his life. He’s so protective over his grandmother and this whole idea of tramping across the countryside to find this Lorenzo that’s so foreign to him, that’s so before his time — it’s too confusing for him. And the fact that Amanda’s character is so attractive is also what frustrates Charlie.” Whether Charlie and Sophie end up together is for the audience to find out, but the fact that Charlie and Sophie even entertain the idea of being with each other despite their differences is refreshing for Egan. “I think it’s nice in our movie that they don’t just hit it off straight away and it’s all just happy ever after,” he explained. “It feels like real characters with real issues and I think that’s the perfect love story — two characters that hate each other in the beginning, but end up transforming over the course of the movie.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Letters to Juliet.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Corey Haim Died Of Natural Causes, Autopsy Reveals

A combination of pneumonia and respiratory and heart trouble led to the actor’s death at age 38. By Larry Carroll Corey Haim Photo: Ron Galella/ WireImage When Corey Haim died , the news shocked fans and pop-culture followers alike. Now, nearly two months later, the results of an autopsy are finally providing answers about what killed the ’80s icon. According to a coroner’s report released Tuesday (May 4), the “License to Drive” star died of natural causes from a combination of pneumonia and respiratory and heart trouble. According to a KTLA report, state Attorney General Jerry Brown told the TV station that the troubled actor illegally obtained more than 550 prescription pills in the months leading up to his death. Brown said Haim had secured such pills as Valium and Soma through seven different doctors who were reportedly “duped.” The report from Craig R. Harvey, Los Angeles chief coroner investigator & chief of operations, however, says: “The toxicology report revealed no significant contributing factors.” Corey Haim: A Life In Photos In addition, the report reads: “The cause of death has been determined to be: Diffuse alveolar damage, community acquired pneumonia, other conditions (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy with coronary arteriosclerosis).” The report concludes with “Manner of death: Natural.” Haim died at age 38 on March 10 at Burbank, California’s Saint Joseph Medical Center. He had collapsed hours earlier at his mother’s apartment in Hollywood. Although Haim’s family said the actor had cut back significantly on the drug addictions that had plagued him for years, a producer on one of his final projects told MTV News in March that he was still struggling with substance problems in 2008. Over the course of three decades in Hollywood , Haim made a name for himself in films like “Lucas,” “The Lost Boys,” “License to Drive” and “Dream a Little Dream.” In 2008, he made a minor comeback alongside fellow ’80s superstar Corey Feldman in “The Two Coreys,” a reality show that chronicled their friendship. Monica Potter On Overcoming Her Fears of Parenthood and Bluetooth Technology

Over the course of Monica Potter’s 15-year acting career, the Cleveland-born actress has divided her time between the big screen, with projects like Con Air and Along Came a Spider , and the small screen, with series Boston Legal and Trust Me . But when executive producer Jason Katims ( Friday Night Lights ) offered Potter the opportunity to converge mediums with Parenthood , NBC’ s dramedy based on the 1989 Steve Martin film, the actress hesitated. A mother of three herself, Potter was not sure that she could accurately portray Kristina Braverman, a tightly wound mother trying to raise her autistic son (Max Burkholder) and teenage daughter Haddie (Sarah Ramos) while maintaining her marriage (to Adam, played by Peter Krause) and navigating the many relationships of her her in-laws, the mighty Braverman clan. Last week, Potter tested out her new hands-free technology by phoning Movieline to explain how she conquered her fear of TV motherhood, reclaimed her Cleveland accent and felt after her favorite character was canceled.
